RE: What prop for a HB 40 PDP with tuned pipe?
Start with a 10x6 and verify that the rpm surges around 75% throttle on the ground. Adjust propeller loading or change the header length in order to achieve this. Your big trainer may be able to make better use of an 11x4.

RE: DLE 15cc?
The key of the comparrison was in a much smaller faster airframe. Anyway a 91fs is even less than a .91 two stroke, add a pipe to that and it becomes equivalent to a 1.20 FS.

RE: DLE 15cc?
ORIGINAL: Mustangman40
ORIGINAL: allans <span style=''color: #ff0000''>A 20 cc DLE is really as powerful as 90 FS glow engine. Not more as some claim. But the weight difference makes the glow engine a better ''performer''. The glow engine is lighter. But still , why would DLE market a 15 when they are selling a 20 as fast as they can make them. It is not going to be better in any way, plus less powerfull and a poor performer ( weight). Same goes for a 35 , when they are selling a very good 30?
I'm not buying that at all, no disrespect.. My good friend is flying a Funtana 90 with the DLE20, 10 pounds 3 ounces.. He is swinging a 17x6 at 9000rpm on a pipe, he is trying different props to get the RPM's down and the plane has goobs of power to do any 3DÂ maneuver he wants.. Put a 90 four stroke in it and the plane would be a dog compared to the 20... Jimbo
Exchange the pipe for a muffler then do a comparison in a faster airframe. This application is where a good 91fs will be as powerful with less weight.

I had an 7.5lb GP Ultimate what would knife edge loop with an STS90 turning a 14-5 Zinger over 11000.. The stock muffler hurt performance, no muffler was much better and a tuned pipe made it worth flying.

RE: Varible pitch prop development
The only advantage that I can see on a model plane would be the explosive response of having the engine and prop spinning at max rpm all of the time. I would not waste the power potential with a direct drive setup though. A belt reduction and a tuned pipe could provide an easy 50% gain over what we have now without losing any throttling precision. Just like a modern model helicopter.

RE: Saito 325 radial running problem
My 325 has hot and cold cylinders but they will drop out only when the L/S needle is much too lean or too rich. Try to identify the extreme cylinders by watching exhaust residue. The cold ones will pas a lot of oil and the hot ones will make very little residue by comparison. Search for intake leaks on the hot cylinders. I would drop the oil content to no more than 15% and work with the carb assuming every cylinder has equal valve lash and compression.

RE: Why Gassers are more addictive or better than Glows e?
Gas vs glow is mainly about economics and convenience. Twenty years ago most modelers were stuck with small glow airplanes because the bigger stuff was just too expensive. Now 20-30cc planes and engines are just as available and affordable as a .61 glow powered model was then. Plus there is the bandwagon effect, I have watched people spend more converting to gas than they ever would have spent on glow fuel. Throw in one RFI related crash and they are really underwater compared to glow.

RE: OS61FSR or OS61SF ABC
Everyones experience has mirrored my own on this comparison. The 61FSR works nice with a 11x7, the carb acts too big for less rpm. The SF61 is more versatile and can work with less rpm although the SF will still spin an 11x7 just as well. I put an old OS61 carb on a Supertigre 75 and found more power with the same handling qualities as the OS61s they came from. My NIB 61s now sit in a drawer without carbs.
ORIGINAL: kyleandtavion There is two kinds of people in this hobby builders and fliers...... I am a flyer..... If there wasn't arfs I wouldn't fly..... I don't have months or hundreds of hours to build a plane that could crash in one flight.
Before ARFs we were ALL builders, that alone was a tall hurdle. That combined with less reliable radios and engines made flying models a huge accomplishment. Now simulators and cheap ARFs make it so anyone can have what few could achieve in the past. The two kinds of people in this hobby are the ones that have paid their dues and ones that have not. That is the root of all the negative sentiment toward ARFs.

RE: NEW Mintor 33cc and 38cc
ORIGINAL: MTK
ORIGINAL: TimBle Having a shorter stroke is not a bad thing if the timing and rotating weight allows for higher rpm to make power. If it can rev and has good midrange it may be an excellent pattern aerobatics engine.
Just ran the initial run on the 38. Using an apc 18x10, older style prop that tapers the blades down to 3/8'' at the tips. It was hard mounted om my test stand. The test stand was mounted to my deck in the back yard. That's the way I run the initial runs on all engines except all others were soft mounted first. This one was hard mounted since I didn't have a soft mount built yet. The vibration was felt through the deck and into my toes. That was unexpected. A hard mounted engine in a plane will transfer that kind of vibration directly into the airframe. I am a big proponent of soft mounting any engine but especially a single cylinder. Well, the engine is new and was only muffled...no pipe as yet. I got a respectable 7500 rpm and expect that to increase as the engine breaks in. Ran out of time to try different props. Different props are more difficult since installation requires 4 bolts. I can't stand that style prop install. When are mfr's going to stop doing that. It makes no sense for anything smaller than 100 cc I really like the appearance of this small gassie. My set-up required that I flip the carb which was no biggie. With the carb off I took a peek at the reed block. Beautiful, machined ally with stainless steel reeds. Very kool. The pressure pulse tubing had to be lengthened a bit but that was no biggie. Took 3 flips with choke on to fire. One flip after that with choke off had the engine running...Nice!! Those that have read my scribble about the OS33 problem, this was a very welcome change. Looking inside the cylinder one will see a rather small exhaust port compared to other engines that are similar in size, and fairly small transfer ports on the opposite side. Don't know why Mintor were so conservative on sizing their ports but it looks like more power could be gained by small mods to allow easier breathing. On the other hand if the engine hauls a 20x10 at the same rpm then it's no big deal, and the running manners of the beastie is really what matters anyway. More to come
I can understand the question coming prom a pattern flyer that has used only composite props. They use multi bolt hubs because wood props crush over time. I have watched many ARF owners remove spinners and tighten their props after it was obvious. They always say "I know I tightened that good", last year. That is better than watching them dig a 20+ inch prop out of their chest.

RE: Tuning 2-cycle for hovering
For most reliable hovering tune on the rich side and use some nitro. 15-20% nitro will reduce the mixture change noticeably over 0-5%. The best hover needle setting will usually be much too rich in level flight. Also keep the tank small and close to the engine.

All JASO spec oil use a low ash additive package that may foul a CM6 in this application. Plus their high level of polyisobutene increase bearing temps. At 5% a non-spec ester racing oil will be good for the bearing but may foul the plug. PAG will also work well as long as enough is used. Castor will stick to the exhaust valve.

A lot of people just dont have the knack for machines. Many of these people that are having problems with their giant scale models would have, in the past, been shaken out of the hobby after that 20 second flight/crash of their Cox ARF. Others are intelligent, creative guys that over complicate and over tinker their way into problems. The key is staying in the game long enough to be successful.

TimBle, you perfectly represent the "modern model airplane owner". Im not saying that negatively (although it will be taken so) because you support the industry and provide entertainment for spectators. Flying an ARF with everything store bought is a shallow experience compared to what people went through even 20-30 years ago. This is why you have a different method of judging quality and value than the old timers here. With that said I just got into large glow powered radials, the antithesis of cheap gassers.

RE: Do any of you guys use vibration dampening mounts 50cc?
Its easy to take out some airframe noise with firm rubber mounts but all the vibration will still be there. I made a large cradle mount with pneumatic pillows at each corner for an old UAV. Resonance could be moved around by adding weight/stiffness to the mount and different areas on the airframe. The engine would jump around alarmingly at lower rpms without some weight added. The helicopter company that I now work for has scientists spending millions to make the best of this zero sum game.

Fourstrokes in general are more sensitive to fuel contamination than twostrokes. I have consistently found old and poorly stored fuel to greatly affect fourstrokes while having almost no adverse effect on twostrokes. Once you get use to running 20/20 fuel everything else will seem to run poorly.
