Seems to me the only one who may be kicking the dog and beating wives is you considering your response. Have fun with your migs.
ORIGINAL: buzzallnight first you said you gave 50 away a couple of years ago then you said you gave 200 away 4 or 5 years ago ah..... they made 100,000 of them but you think these might be the ones you gave away? Did they look like MIG 27s? were they made out of the crappiest Styrofoam I have ever seen? white and blue mixed? It was a good thing you did years ago good on you don't kick your dog or beat your wife anymore because of my actions please but that was years ago and this is now..... They are heavy and under powered so I was only going to use the wing and engine for a control line flying wing (gasp) and then the wing, engine and rudder of another one for an R/C flying wing but your comments have hurt my feeling so much I feel like flying them and shooting them full of holes :)
RE: Mig 27 Foam Drone,, Carl Goldberg
No I don't really care what people do with them. About 4-5 years ago I aquired about 200+ of them in Minnesota and gave them to people under the issue that I would not just be getting them for people to take and sell to make money from. What I was doing was to help people out who "really" wanted one or had an interest in projects using one of them. I spent many hours and a bit of money moving the airplanes and didnt expect anything from that other than people use them if I got them. Who knows, someone may have had some laying around for 20 years in the garage or just didnt have time to putz with them. My only interest is the fact if people might be selling the ones I got is that I will never do something like this again is all. This was not my intention otherwise I would have sold them all myself instead of help. Bottom line is I don't have any authority over what people do with their stuff (IE the migs) and don't really care all that much its just that I will never waste my time in doing stuff for others in this regard again. So I apoligize if that seemed directed at you because I didnt really mean it that way. Unfortuante that I could not inject some sense of jest into the statement. Harry

I feel your pain! These one time deals don't bother me as much as when I am in build mode and put the exacto (glue bottle, or insert whatever tool you are using at the time) down right next to what I am working on and look away or answer the phone or something only to find that the tool I was just using got up and moved across the room all by itself. After the tool moves all by itself 3 or 4 times I know its time to stop working for the night. Harry

RE: Why are Futaba Servos so expensive?
You would be fine with the cheaper hitec digi's in a mojo 60. I personally have never had a futaba servo fail me and use their expensive servos in my expensive airplanes and heli's. I have had hitecs fail though I can't say I have lost a plane because of a servo fail (yet) and I have been flying for almost 20 years. For me it also depends on application. Is your Mojo is going to be your main airplane that you invested all your time and money into? If so why save 100 bucks on a few of servos when your investment is worth 500-600 not including time? If not and its just outfitting a throw around or training airplane then go cheap. Sheesh you can even outfit it with HK servos and I bet you would be good to go and save a ton. Bottom line its up to you. If budget is a problem go cheap. If not go for security. Back to my first line though, I don't think you have anything to worry about by putting either hitecs or futabas in a mojo 60. Just do your homework and make sure you get something that is properly rated. Just my 2 cents. Harry

RE: lawn darted brand new 50cc
Man that really stinks. Sorry for your loss. I lost a 50cc a few years ago due to what I thought was a radio failure but it ended up being a power issue. I took the plane off and it was about perfect just to find that once I got 20 feet off the ground I had no control. The plane just kept going in a very lazy climb with an ever so slight left turn at 1/4 throttle until it exceeded about 30 degrees bank and started coming down right into the field parking lot behind the pits of all places. Smashed the wings into toothpicks when it hit. I got lucky that the wing and the back of the fuse took all the shock from the crash. My engine wasnt even scratched and none of the servos broke/stripped (Which was a major indicator of the power failure). Sounds like you didnt come out as good as I did. Again sorry to hear about the loss. Harry

RE: UAV Jobs
I think one of the main problems you are going to run into now is Military, or better yet DoD run operations is where its at as far as experience. Once the wars pull back more and the FAA eases airspace restrictions for SUAS/UAS is when you are going to see a boom for guys with no DoD experience. It will happen. Harry

Since this thread is still fresh I thought I would aks here. I flew my turbine with Dave Schwanz at tri-valley a while ago but still need help with getting a sign off from another waiver holder (Dave is a CD) as there were no other holders at the field during the initial flights. Is anyone in this thread planning to fly at tri-valley soon that would be willing to help me out. I don't get out to the fields like I used to so I have lost touch with many of the folk who I used to fly with. Funny what 3 children and a new job do to your hobby life isnt it? Harry

RE: 12FGA major problems
Think I found the answer to my question and its fairly scary considering the situation that caused the problem is not really avoidable. Going from house to airfield caused the temp to be different between the radio and ambient temps thus causing condensation inside the radio which led to the faulty connections that the radio was having. The radio works fine now but to be honest with where I live this condition is almost unavoidable unless I want to put my family through summer misery or just not fly. Reason this likely hasnt happend before is that I havent been flying with this radio much since I got it due to work and family. I don't know if there is anything that can be done as far as sealing the radio but this could cause that loss of airplane so I hope people understand how this could affect their radios. Harry

12FGA major problems
Today I was out flying my camera plane (sig kadet Sr) and all was going good for about 3 minutes when I suddenly noticed a fairly nasty pull to the left as if the rudder was maxxed. Anyways I brought the airplane in and saw that sure enough the rudder and nose wheel were both at max travel. The servo was hitting its end point and jittering but I could see the jittering in the servo monitor and for some reason the rudder control was at like -101. As I said this was not the case until around 3 minutes in to the flight (I have the video also). So as I am going though unplugging and trying new channels I find that there is nothing wrong with the servo but as I am using the wheel to scroll through it starts making the trim tab noises and sure enough on the main screen the wheel is moving random trims. Switching models does the same thing. Rudder close to maxxed and wheel changes random trims. I can post videos and pictures of this if you like. I don't think this is a pot issue because of the wheel changing the trims. I don't know if you have ever seen this or not but if you have suggestions please advise. Also there were no mixes on this model. It was fine until 3 minutes into the flight then haywire radio. Thank god I did not lose the plane or no one got hurt. Thanks, Harry

RE: UAV Jobs
TOM hit the nail on the head. Years ago before there were many people with documented UAS operations experience there were young pilots in CAP (Civil Air Patrol) programs getting hired by contractors to teach UAS. Now its as TOM stated. Experience overseas with UAS trumps all. When I was looking at getting out of the military about 5 years ago I sent a bunch of inquiries out and with just the 2 years I had been involved with UAS operations overseas pretty much any and all civilian requirements would be waived by the contractor other than my private/commercial which was due to the FAA. Now my issue is keeping my Soldiers in and not going to the contractors. Funny how that works. Its getting to a point now where the military is nothing more than a paid UAS degree program for the contractors to hire from. Oh well. Harry

RE: Jet Oil alternative
Years old thread and it still looks like there still is a great divide even though the physical proof is out there in the Turbine oil vs 2-cycle oil debate. With some of the bigger R/C turbine companys finally endorsing 2 cycle oils its stranges that there are still a couple of hold outs to at least say its ok to use one or the other. Oh well. Everyone is going to use what they want anyways. Have a great day. Harry

OMP 65 yak ARF aileron hardwood?
I got one of these sometime ago and its in a semi-finished state because after drilling holes at the 14" mark per the manual I get nothing but balsa for the control horn mount area. I have since cut the covering off of the area and there is nothing but balsa sheet/leading edge. Is there a hardwood mount for the control horns? Just wondering because even with glue there is no way to secure screws or a bolt locknut on there besides that the aileron surface area is too massive to be secure with balsa with anything more than tiny movements. RE: OMP Yak 65
I got this airplane some time ago but just got around to finishing it or at least semi-finished. What I mean by that is where exactly on the ailerons are the hardpoints for mounting the control horns? I measured and there is nothing there but sheeting and leading edge. Cutting the covering is my next step but I thought I would ask the guys who have this one finished before I did so. Harry

RE: EDF Predator UCAV from Nitro Planes
I will have to throw it back on the scale but with the midi-pro and medusa on 8S the plane has got to be close to if not more than 1 to 1 thrust ratio so I can only imagine what Gregs with do on 12s. I didnt modify much of anything on this plane but if a guy were to make some intakes that smoothed the air going into the fan I think this plane would scream. I have wires and crap all in the intake area because of the battery pack set up (there really no way around it unless you make intakes). Fun airplane to fly that sounds great. I get so used to flying the buzzy 70mm EDFs that I forget that 90mm and bigger sounds so much better. You hear the thrust of the fan as opposed to the blades spinning. APS - I will try and remember to weigh it tonight and post the ###'s. I know the reason I went with the heavier 2P cells was because of the CG. Unless your friend moves whatever fan he has close to the tail of the airplane there is no way to get with in the CG range without having to add weight to the tail. I went with the heavy pack because by moving the packs over the intakes I could get alot of the weight on and just slightly behind the CG. You could get away with 1P packs but they would have to be stubby instead of long cells to keep as much weight out of the front as possible. One thing that I can say though that I should have mentioned before is that you should also try and get as much tail throw as possible to help with slow speed. I had to come in on landing FAST because the first landing pass I made with it the elevator got too mushy to soon considering the speed I was going. Not a bad thing just something you need to look out for. Basiclly like flying a larger turbine with a heavier wing loading. Harry

RE: NEW 30% BME EDGE II
Yes I went back to 2.4 but swapped out to a 617. I also think it was a power issue with the first crash so I went to a dual battery set up on a fromeco wolverine switch instead of a single. That first one is hard to pin down though. With how this thing flys I see lots of great flights with it. The only real problem I had was that I lost all of the leading edge covering and a couple of stripes. I thought I had ironed all of it down really good but apparently not. Great plane so far. Harry
