RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Hi Lionel. You created one of most attractive looking NS. I hope that the changes you incorporated into the design work for you. I am sure you will let us know your experience with the model once on the water. I am glad when my design is modified for whatever reason. Good luck. Laddie.

RE: prop size
ORIGINAL: m-mtoys I am putting a 55 AX engine on this plane, but not sure what prop to use in a 3 blade or 4 blade. The engine calls for a 12/7 or 8 13/6or 7 Not space for a two blade prop. Carey
If there was no modification done to the kit, then 12 prop will fit nicely. The model does not need any larger props. Laddie.

Here is my 84 twin engine Tupolev TB-1 and the little fighters Tupolev I-4 I built 13 years ago. I could release I-4s one at the time or both at the same time. Each plane was on different frequency. All models were made from the foam. I scanned the photos taken by old camera. Laddie.

RE: Seaplane pictures
My fleet of models at the Float Fly organized by the Electric Model Flyers of Southern Ontario last weekend. The models are, Shearwater, 12 engine Dornier Do-X, 4 engine Dornier Superwal, Thurston Teal and scratch built Polaris. All were flown several times. Great weather, great turnout and no serious crashes. Laddie.

RE: Electrified Northstar
At the time when I was building e-NS I wasn’t aware that long battery wires could damage the ESC. I had lot of flights with no issues until one day the model just rolled to left in hit the ground hard. It wasn’t me. When I checked the remains, 10A BEC was toast. Maybe the spikes in the battery wires caused the failure. Since then I am using short battery wires and long motor wires. Laddie

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
drumduan When I designed the N.S. about 25 years ago it was for plain bearing OS.35 I had. Since then me and other modellers installed all kind of glow engines up to the 120 four stroke. In 2006 I built the N.S. for AXI 4120/18 electric motor. I was happy with the performance. It was not as fast as the one powered by .46 glow engine, but still fast enough. If you want to read more about my electric N.S. go to this thread. When I designed the N.S. about 25 years ago it was for plain bearing OS.35 I had. RE: Electric Northstar ?
Alasdair I did not check the RPMs. The 10 prop might be not give you enough thrust. The 10-8 three blade prop might work, but you might need to have the motor with the higher RPM / V then 515 RPM / V that the AXI 4120/18 has. I know it is a pain, but to get enough clearance, best would be to remove the nacelle and splice the extension to the bottom of the fin as shown on the drawing in previous post. Laddie.
ORIGINAL: alasdair Bob, Did Laddie say how many watts he is pulling, and what size prop he is turning at what RPM?  What wattage are you planning?  I can not tell you exact numbers. I never been too interested in the numbers. Usually I use what I have on hand. Usually on my AXI 4120/18 I use 12-6 or 12-8 prop and 6S 5000mA Lips. Right now I do not have electric NS. The model was destroyed when my radio lost the contact with the model. I am enclosing the web site where I am writing about my E-NS. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6706878&postcount=6

RE: Electrified Northstar
ORIGINAL: Strykaas Laddie, Do you think a more powerful setup could make your e-NS faster than the glow ones ? The e-NS is sleeker, and theoretically faster then, as there is no engine cylinder sticking out the fuselage lines... What do you think ? I see no real reason why a e-NS would be slower.
Yes, I think it would. Personally, I did not explored what motor is on market that could give NS more speed. Laddie.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
I am enclosing some old photos I scan from my albums showing just minute portion what was done to North Star design by modellers around the world. Most of the scans are of poor quality, by it give you idea. First scan at the top is showing 150% version built in Ivory Coast Africa. As you can see, two bottoms are twin powered NS. Second scan is showing my long nose NS and several NS at the Skymaster Float Fly. Third scan is showing me digging out what left of my NS. The middle picture is showing 200% NS built by the club member Peter Baab and my 100% un-covered NS and my 50% NS sitting on the top. The bottom picture is from England. I think it is 150% NS. Two and half years ago the new kid on the block showed up in the form of 29 wingspan all foam version on the NS, designed by Steve Shumate of Washington State. He calls it the Polaris which is still other name for the North Star. I hope that my NS and his Polaris will continue bringing enjoyment.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
ORIGINAL: Cougar429 Laddie, is that firewall extension now changed in the BUSA kit? Goldenduff, if you are planning on moving the fuel tank away from the nacelle do not use silicone fuel tubing. It will eventually break down and be difficult, if not impossible to replace. For that I found aquarium air tubing the perfect diameter and easy to form with a bit of heat.
No. It is still in the same place which is OK.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
The North Star produced by Balsa USA is strong enough for normal flying using landing gear for land operation. If flown from hard surfaces without the landing gear, then glassing the bottom is required or use the lite ply for the fuselage bottom in front of the step. Since I designed the model over 25 years ago and build about twenty or so North Stars I did not find need to change the design to give it more strength. In case of crush, the fin and the nacelle will come off. I feel that no amount of reasonable reinforcement will prevent that. Over the years I did some cosmetic changes and I placed the elevator and throttle servos inside the nacelle, made the stab with top fin removable and extended the firewall by 1.Sheeting whole wing will do nothing to strengthen the model, but will add un-necessary weight behind the CG. I do not discourage anyone to improve the design, just make sure that you do not add more weight to the back of the model. Good luck. Laddie.

RE: Anybody flown the Sea Loon?
If changes Jim is suggesting do not help I would do this. Increase the buoyancy of the hull and add the step. You can do it easily using the foam block. Sand the block so it follows the contour of hull bottom up to the step. The step should be 1 high. Sand the block so the front tapers to nothing. This will give you steeper angle of the bottom which when moving forward should force the nose out of the water. Place the step under the C/G. Attach the foam to the bottom to the hull with double sided tape. If this does not work, you will be able to remove the foam easily. Good luck. Laddie Mikulasko.
