RE: ESM F4U Build
Here's the pics I promised. Short flight didn't give Nancy Abby much time to get some pics, but she grabbed these 2 just barely off the deck and two more on the ground. She's always very good with the pics. Fuel line was hanging out after the flight. Needs a better o-riing in the fuel dot. I painted the fuel/power panel after the flight to a dark blue. Looks a lot less glaringly obvious. I also flew her today and got the gear up and landed with full flaps. Very nice indeed. I built a baffle system for the engine to keep temps down and air flowing over just the cooling fins - it kept the engine at 205 degrees F inside the cowl and 165 outside the cowl around the spark plug. Nancy found some more pics. Glad she was on the ball! I like the last "high" pic coming straight into the camera with the classic gull wings in perfect outline. Pic with flaps full down would have been nicer, but, maybe next big outing. RE: ESM F4U Build
Flew today at the club July 4th celebration. Was a short flight. Takeoff was normal and I let it run long before adding back pressure. Nice lift off but on the climb out it became a bit nose heavy. Ed Couch was spotting for me and added some nose up trim which helped. Next, it wanted to roll to the left pretty heavy, so fixed that with trim. Flew another circuit and decided to keep the gear down and landed without flaps. Smooth wheels-on landing. I may need to add baffles to the cowl to keep the temps down. On first runs, it ran 230 to 245 degrees F. Of course, it's a new DLE-30 and the run was static, but forgot to temp it after the flight. I haven't noted any other anomalies so far and all parts looked like they stayed on the model. I did add yet another 5 ounces on the cowl before flight for safe measure on CG. I will fly it with that weight with the gear up and then decide what it needs for good. Plane seemed to not notice any additional weights. That's 2 lb 5 ounces total dead weight. Had some stomach problems after lunch, so came home without further flights I like the fact that the fuselage fits in the back seat of my Chevy PU and the wing in the front seat. May have some pics to follow as there were several Photogs there. Not sure what may turn up but will post what they have. Thurs 5th July. Man, just working on my F4U and discovered something shocking. The Elevator servo arm retaining screw had fallen out of the servo during the flight. Wow, if that arm had come off... THE END. So, even though I know it was on there and tight before flight, I put it back in and EPOXIED it! hahaha. Cheaper to replace a metal gear servo than a $$$ONE LARGE$$$$ Corsair! I hope that was just a strange occurrence since it has never happened in the 27 years I'be been R/C'ing. I've seems guys just forget to install the screws, but not fall out. Glad I only flew her once on July 4th.

RE: ESM F4U Build
On the gear today. Put in 9 hours and am done for today. Whew. Still needs the CG finalized. Looks like more than 1 pound lead and perhaps 2 pounds. Inside of cowl needs painting, retracts need minor adjusting on up/down pressure release, other smaller items. Monday July 2. Got the plane balanced out at the factory CG setting of 130mm behind the LE. Or, roughly 5 inches. Weighs in at 18 lbs even with 2 lb lead in the nose. I use 1 and 2 lb diver's weights and they are pretty handy to have around. I am to the stage of flying on the 4th, possibly. Gotta run it on the stand at the field and get her setup for idle and best new engine RPM. RE: ESM F4U Build
Got the tail feathers done today. Looks good now, but had a delay in making the horizontals fit the fuselage. One side was WAY off the money. Had to slice and dice to make her fit and used that template piece to put back the material I took off one side. It all went together. 30 minute epoxy almost completely got fired off before I could join all the horizontals in. Man, that was close. 45 minute next time, next model, I guess. If I keep pressing, I might get this done in time for our club 4th of July meet. Be cool to do that in 105 degree F heat. Not too much left to do - install the wing, finalize the fuel system, install the Miracle power switch cluster, install retract valve and lines, CG, etc. Might make it. Miracle power switch and fuel dot installed. Elevator rigging done. I changed the elevator servo from a Futaba 3010 to a HiTek 645 metal gear. I've had great luck with the 3010's, but this one may need some extra uuumph! Tailwheel finished. Batteries installed. It's getting there. Power panel may need a coat of Navy blue before I'm all done messing with her. I was hoping for a darker blue, but that's what it came as. Fixed in place tailwheel kind of sucks, but it's going to work fine. The 50cc version would be the one to go all out with, lots more room. I'm about done today. Whew. But beats being in the 103 degree F heat all day at the flying field. DLE-55 should run a 22x8 or 22x10. 22x8 is considered a break in prop. I cannot remember what engine you are running, sorry. I'm flying a 22x10 on the DLE-55.

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
tms261, mine was 20 lb before lead and I added 3 lbs 2 oz to that number, so about 23 lb. I am glad I added another 0.5 lb to the method that Wild Hare suggests to balance or it would have been a one flight wonder. I'd take a stab at using the 25 percent MAC method of balancing, as a backup. And of course, do so with the retracts in the UP position, not down. This throws the CG aft a good bit. She'll fly OK, perhaps, with the gear down using the WH method, but will be a handful with the gear up. So, measure the chord of the wing at the root, take 25 percent of that, and measure off the leading edge. Transfer that measurement at 90 degrees to the root out to the wing tips and hang it upside down to test. If you are not at least nose level (preferably a slight nose-down) with gear up, then don't fly. At least, that's my suggestion. Overall weight is not a problem with this plane as the wing area is large and with a DLE-55 or G-62 there is plenty of power. If you are using the wing bolts that came with the model, I suggest not using them. I used a standard set of 1/4-20 nylon bolts front he hobby shop. Good luck on your flight!! PS, I measured my mark on the wing tip. It's about 2.5" behind the LE. That's a ballpark measurement. You should be able to handle any imbalance with trim changes.

Flew mine today. I ended up with 3 lb 2 0z lead in the nose, just to be safe. If flew nicely though, I kept the gear down on the first flight and flew for 5 minutes to a nice full flap landing. Next flight, sucked the gear up and flew only 2 minutes because my eyes were getting filled with sweat and had a hard time seeing the plane. Not really sure about the trim change as I need to fly longer to see how she trims out with gear up. Overall, a sweet flying bird. Had a photog out there and he left 5 minutes before I flew the second time, Man, I wanted some flight pics. Oh well, I will take it out on Memorial Day for the club military aircraft fly day. Got a few pics between flights by Glen Baker.

That makes more sense. I'll take another look see. It will take some more weight on the nose. Maybe not the full 3 lbs, but some more anyway. Thanks, Splais! I added 6 more ounces to the nose with 7 - 3/4 ounces on the tail. Seems to be balanced.

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
At this angle of tilt, 8 ounces of lead on the horizontal does nothing. The nose is resting on the PVC frame. When the tail is lowered to this position the plane is in a balanced state. Any more lowering of the tail causes it to fall all the way, tail down. So, is this a balanced condition? I still don't really get a feeling of what position I am supposed to start from? Dead level? I hate to say it, but I would MUCH rather be given a distance AFT the leading edge of the wing, because this means absolutely nothing to me.

Got out to the field today with the bird. First thing was to check CG with some help. I need yet another pound of ballast up front. That's 3 pounds total. Ran engine and had no problems with that. Prop needs a good balance job before flight. I flight tested the Rx with my Telemaster, too. No use having NEW NEW NEW stuff on the first flight. A few pics with my pocket camera which is good for stills, but not action. First time on the gear outside! Got about 2 things left to finish out. 1. Place stars and Bars on wings. DONE! 2. Paint pilot, make a seat back, and paint cockpit up a bit. CG seems to need about 2 pounds lead on the nose. Not bad and the plane can handle it easy. Haven't gotten the scales out yet as it's bait cramped in my bedroom workshop. DONE! 20 pounds-even, before lead. Tested the retracts and all work fine with no leaks. Controls all checked out and set. Maybe have her out next week for an engine run. Weather and mood dependent. Ha OI didn't spend too long on this pilot. He'll do since the dark tint on the canopy cuts down on the detail seen. Splais, I agree, too many other things to work on to detail stuff that cannot be seen or make it fly better. I have a 74 Inch ESM Corsair to do after this one. I admit, the extra work for the Orange SolarTex has greatly slowed me down getting it flying, but it's one of the things I do from time to time to be different.

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
Got the choke mechanism worked out with a 4-40 rod bent to shape and wire-tied to a 2-56 wire across the mounting bolts. I use simple and cheap steering arms for the throttle and choke as opposed to the rather expensive custom jobs from Valley View RC at $20 a pair. Also, I did the little improvement on the diaphragm cover by soldering a brass tube to it which keeps the air pressure from pulsing it with a fuel tube to the inside of the fuselage. Now, with those details completed, I can pretty much proceed to finish her out. The engine spark unit will go inside the engine tube ahead of the gas tank and the battery close by or maybe on the outside of the firewall for more forward CG. Next, install the horizontal tails and neaten up the retract rat's nest, and she's about ready. I also have to figure out how I'm gonna mount the pilot. It's kind of a shame to put too nice a pilot in there and doll-up the cockpit since it's hard to see inside. Might use a $10 pilot from the hobby shop. I wonder if anyone else had the same findings on the Wild Hare retract air valve as I did. I hooked all the retracts up, no kinks, no other visible problems. The valve just wouldn't make the MLG work correctly. They would try to work, but just wouldn't do the job. I determined that the only problem possible was with the air valve. I bought a Robart air valve, installed it, and viola, all worked as advertised. I went back to look at the WH valve and think I discovered the problem. The small air release holes in the adjustment stems had not been drilled. The Robart has these and that's how the air escapes the up side to allow the down side to work. I guess they just forgot to drill them on this particular valve. Anyway, it was a good copy of the Robart and I expected it to work.

Spias, if you close down the amount of area in the intake side, the underside hole should be enough area to dump. In other words, add some baffles in front of the engine and just let the air come thru to the cooling fins only, a few inches in width. Believe it or not, this works. Several guys at the field who are experienced scale contest pilots do this and it does indeed work. I don't have any pics, but hope you get the idea.

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
Spias, there is a built in dump area on the bottom of the fuselage where the optional canister muffler goes. That should give you plenty of dump area for cooling. I think it was G-Pete who used the louvered cooling vent plates form Vally View RC to cover that area. I liked his idea and am going to use them myself. I'll post a pic here since I don't know where that post was way back there. You'll have to fill in the opening just a bit with some triangle stock or whatever's handy. Little primer and paint to match and you are set. These come 4 to a set and looks like it will take 2-1/2 of them to fill the void.. Pluggin away. Got the retract system pretty much done and pressure tested. It works. Got to tuck away the lines neatly and clean things up a bit. The air tank and retract servo/valve are mounted on plywood and using the nut plates from the factory jig and to make them removable in the future if I need to get to the rudder servo area. Next is to test the main gear and then on to the engine and fuel tank mounting. Won't be long now!

Believe it or not, there's a gap in the giant scale P-51 market in the 100 inch range as far as being affordable. Comp ARF has one but it's at least $4K finished out. Beyond the $$$ of most of the guys here. A giant P-51 built-up like the F6F would be great to have and fun to fly.

Tom, good points. But, if you say 3D elevator is 3/4" each way, and is sufficient to snap/stall it, then what would be a good setting for standard rates? 3/8" each way? See my point? How much is plenty? What is the minimum setting? You don't show a low rate setting in inches for the elevator or ailerons. 3/4" is all that's there. No use programming 3/4" each way if that's gonna snap on top of a loop or on take off or landing. No need to even have that in the radio for my purposes since I fly pretty much scale. Never flown 3D. I routinely fly with HI/LOW rates set in. Low rate is typically 80 percent of the Hi rate. I also fly with +40 expo on my Spektrum 2.4.

From the manual. Just want to make sure the elevator throw below is for standard flight. It seems to say these are for 3D flying. Control Throws We set the control throws as follows on planes in test. Please keep in mind the high rates specified here are for 3d. The elevator in particular at these rates will cause instant stalling, tumbling, and all sorts of other things that can only be done at low speeds. Do not use the 3d settings until you are thoroughly familiar with the plane on low rates. Ailerons 1 inch each way with –30% expo (+30% on JR or Spektrum) Elevators 3/4 each way with –35-40% expo Ruder low rate 3/4, high rate move as far as possible, -30-40% expo Fly the plane on low rates at first. You will probably want to use high rate rudder taxiing on the ground but don’t forget to switch to low rate before takeoff.

The Hellcat comes with a 22 ounce tank. I don't know about the DLE-55 on fuel consumption, but it may need a 32 ounce tank. I was partially going off a club member saying that he only runs a 16 ounce tank because if he loses control of the throttle, it will be up there only a short time before it runs out of gas. I fly a DLE-30/Quarter Scale Cub on a 12 ounce tank for 10 - 15 minutes and it usually only uses about 4 ounces. Chad, thanks for the encouragement. Any color is fine as long at it flies. Dark colors tend to disappear sometimes though. Of course, keeping it close-in to the flight line where the peanut gallery can get a good look at her eliminates that problem, usually.
