RE: Lawsuit filed against AMA
Always nice to have the details... But there, in my humble opinion, appears to be some neglect in the part of the women. Mc Donald’s didn't place the coffee between her legs, nor force her to decide to add stuff to the coffee. The bottom line is reality and facts don't decide the case. The jury makes their decision on the facts and interprets them according to their belief system and the instructions of the court. Aside from that, the jury has a wide range of discretion to decide. Hence, typically when cash is given the jurors gained the sympathy of the one seeking damages. Perhaps the arrogance of McDonald's lead to the large reward, thus giving the case popularity. IMHO we should always ask, "What part did the person play in either assuming or acting in a negligent way?" Just asking... PS, lay off the spell checkin', I didn't use it on this one....LOL

RE: Lawsuit filed against AMA
Now, if the AMA could prove that he was receiveing service from his girlfriend, then he would not have suffered any damages as he was still receiving such service from a third party...ROFLMAO... I won a lawsuit from an insurance company failing to cover my claim thus I lost my drivers license as a result in the state of California. I won the lawsuit, but received no award because I continued to drive with out a license and never got pulled over. So I suffered no damages...Thruth be told, had I took the bus the award would have been set above $250K...prior case law supported it....Arrrggggg!!!!!

RE: Lawsuit filed against AMA
We should be consered about this issue regardless of how stupid or silly this all sounds. After all, McDonalds had to pay out because somebody put coffee between there legs when driving and then spilled hot coffee on theirself... Attorney's and Jury never fail to surprise...Rool the dice, the odds are better than Vegas, so welcome to the US civil court system.

RE: D4 contest schedule 2011
ORIGINAL: djohnstone Ok guys, here is the schedule that I have. I have been trying to get this finalized for about a month. I will get it to Pete and get it on the website ASAP. I hadn't looked at this forum for about a week or two because of several distractions so I didn't know you were discussing it. The D-5 calendar has the shootout on there in June. Bobby must be confused on that. That is the wrong date for the Muncie contest. The date that we have is the only one that AMA would give us. We all agreed last year that it would not be the shootout any longer. We will need to agree on a D-4 contest, I think Weak Signals, and a D-5 contest to call the shootout for this year. The judging clinic is planned for the morning at Muncie and flying after that. I hope you like it! May 21-22 NATS tune up and judging clinic at Muncie. This is NOT the shootout any longer! June 4-5 Northern KY Pattern Contest - Hebron, KY June 11-12 Heart of Ohio - Grove City OH July 9-10 Weak Signals -Monroe MI Aug 2-6 NATS - Muncie IN Aug 27-28 - Ohio Valley - St Clairsville, OH Sept 10-11 Tom Brett Memorial - Detroit Sept 24-25 District Championship - Hebron, KY No Date Yet for Evansville, IN
Not sure there is a good date for the Evansville contest for 2011. The club is pretty open to the dates and was looking to host a second contest, however, there isn't much room with the current schedule without going back to back weekends or competing with the D5 Hoffman Estates (not a choice in my opinion). We'll take a look at next year, unless somebody see's something I'm missing... Larry

RE: Am i ready to fly?
By asking the question, I'd say you still have doubt. I'm very much against somebody going it alone. It puts the hobby at risk unnecessarily if the fate is loss of property or life. There is more to think about than ego.... I'm sure there are varying opinions...But people have been seriously injuried albeit they were very experienced. Too many thing to go wrong and no experience to deal with it is extremely risky... My .02 FWIW

RE: New Pattern Plane Outlet ?
ORIGINAL: gaRCfield Still looking for a local club. There's a good one in Kentucky but it's far enough that I'm still searching. I think the Leo is a good deal and a good tool to get started in pattern. We don't need anything fancy in Sportsman or intermediate, and after a few rough landings the covering will get patched on a higher end plane too [;)] I would still be flying the Venus if it were an easy swap to e-power. Planes at this level are not going to last forever, so really it's just a disposable tool to teach us and hold us over 'til we're really ready to appreciate the Xigris [:D]
What side of Cincinnati are you on? RE: Intermediate sequence - a couple of questions
The following links does not talk about the G-Force playing a role. It does discuss inverted flight being illistrated as a dashed line. If you look at an outide loop you will see the whole loop in shown as a dashed line even though the plane may be upright through the top part of the outside loop. http://www.fightercombat.com/wp-content/uploads/aresti_made_simple_20051.pdf

RE: Intermediate sequence - a couple of questions
ORIGINAL: nonstoprc I have a couple questions about the 2011 version of the immediate sequence. 1. Description for maneuver 2 (reverse Cuban 8 with half rolls): ... Performs a three-quarter (3/4) loop to a 45 down line in the opposite direction ... Looks like the word "down" should be "upper"? 2. Aresti drawing for maneuver 17: should an outside loop be drawn as solid curve line here?
Nice catch, I believe you are correct... The dashed red lines in an aresti indicates a negative force or "G's" (lifting the pilot up out of the seat) on the airframe since the plane is inverted. Once you start to pull through the loop the force then becomes positive (forcing a pilot down in the seat) hence the line becomes solid again. I believe this is correct, I'm sure I will be corrected if not...LOL Larry

RE: USA: Masters Pilots not moving to F3A??
ORIGINAL: mups53 Larry I don't view FAI as a move up. FAI or Masters are both the top classes in the available to fly in here. Heck an Advanced flier can fly FAI if they so choose without it effecting their Advanced status. I actually prefer the competition locally in Masters. We have rivarly's that I look forward to. It is the Top class of the AMA classes. One is not a sandbagger or anything else bad for choosing to fly in this unique US only class. Mike
Mike, I understand flying FAI doesn't prevent a pilot from going back to the original AMA Class. I also agree with your post. I didn't mean to imply any pilot is sandbagging for not moving to FAI. AMA rules have Masters as the highest class of US competition. Everyone has their reason and as I said, there is no right or wrong here. All the opinions stated are within the rules... I obviously don't fly Masters. Although I elected to take my Kaos 40 (Vs not flying) in D4 Champs and fly Intermediate, doesn't mean I'm not competitive. If given the same circumstances as Arch or others, I could see myself making the same decision. My concern is mainly the idea of Masters becoming more difficult because Masters Pilots are no longer challenged. My opinion is the level of difficulty should remain a constant. The cause and effect would certainly be pushed down to the lower classes to close the gap if Masters was on a path to increase the level of difficulty because the skill level of Masters is high.

RE: USA: Masters Pilots not moving to F3A??
ORIGINAL: ArchNemesis I tend to agree with Tony regarding the unknowns. My ability and practice time effectively insulate me from ever having to fly unknowns, but if I did...I'd be woefully unprepared. Getting new pilots to fly FAI has several hurdles to bear. As Archie stated, MOST...not all, but MOST realize that a move up to FAI means never truly being in the "hunt" for a national trophy ever again. It's a rare few that are able to crack into that top 5 and stick. The rest of us enjoy our sub battle to make the semi's and possibly the finals, but there's only a handful that are truly in the hunt for the #1 spot. That's a mind shift for most, considering everyone that's in this facet of the hobby is competitive by nature. Next hurdle is the current status of FAI at the local event. In D4, we're lucky to get 3, maybe 4 FAI flyers. With so few, our ranking is well known, taking some of the fun out of the competition side of things, and our workload is often very high on the judging side. It's a little bit of a catch 22. If we DID get a few masters guys to make the switch, FAI would be more fun, more competitive, and the workload would be better distributed.
Unknowns...This is a view I believe doesn't help Pattern. IMAC is contradictory in which the only class not flying unknowns is the Basic or the entry level class. I understand Tony's opinion as the unknowns become much more of a challenge if you have never had to deal with them in the past. For those that fly IMAC and Pattern, I don't think they have a negative perspective with unknowns being their reason for not moving up. This view is the Paradox that hurts Pattern. Unless there is a paradigm shift there will not be a solution. The Paradox, "I don't move up because I know I'll never be at the top of the next class." So, Masters don't move to FAI, for this reason; cause and effect, Advanced Pilot doesn't believe he can beat those at the Top of Masters, so I'll manage my points and attend less contest to ensure I don't max out and mandatorily Advance; cause and effect, Intermediate Pilots follow suit. Sportsman is immune to this as they have specific qualifications regarding placing and beating a specific number of pilots. When I have attended contests the FAI class was not well represented and most had none. For the top pilots, the reason is that their sponsors have them tied up at some function or event, for the others...Well we need them to move up... I don't think there is a right or wrong and I will not hold it against someone for not moving up to FAI...However, if there isn't a change I wonder what Masters will look like in 5 to 10 years from now... The philosophy to make Masters more challenging is a flawed logic. This will create an environment causing the lower classes to become more difficult to close the gap. Is this what we want, I would say no...? For me, I just barely fly Intermediate and try to focus on note getting zero's... Larry Diamond

RE: Proposed NSRCA sequences for 2011 and beyond
ORIGINAL: gaRCfield Intermediate seems a touch more difficult: added full roll in stall turn, second looping maneuver starting from the top... not complaining just noting, definitely ready for the challenge of at least practicing intermediate from now on. Sportsman moved things around - nice to have the Cobra after a 1/2 Reverse C8 rather just a 1/2 C8. Immelmann sequence is a little funny - double I followed by anothe I [:)] I'd just like to say Thanks to all the guys who work on these sequences. I feel that Sportsman has done a good job of teaching me the basics and preparing me for intermediate. I would like to be more of a part of what goes on behind the scenes, and if things work out for me here in Cincinnati, I should have the opportunity to start doing so by next summer, or this winter. I also would like to throw in a BIG Thanks to the guys in D1 for helping me out so much. I really am looking forward to seeing you guys next year at Nats, D1:D4 shootout, and maybe the D4 championship for those that usually make it out.
I enjoy flying the current Intermediate sequence. I haven't tried the proposed Intermediate, but I like the manuevers. I always thought the Reverse Cuban 8 could be a good Intermediate maneuver. I struggle with rolls on Horizontal lines...My goal will be to fix my rolls for next year instead of just banging the sticks to the side...Rolls on verticle don't seem as bad, but the 1/2 roll for some reason shows I need to work as well. I was nice to be back. Flying the Kaos 40 was not the original plan, but I wasn't going to miss the D4 Champs again this year.

RE: D4 Championships
As always, great job to Mark Atwood and Bob Pannell...Alright...Amy Pannell too... Thanks also to Anthony A. for working with Tony (new Sportsman) and calling/coaching a practice flight for him. Tony also appreciated the help from Arch for getting him some hardware to make repairs to make the final round... The last D4 Champs contest Lisa and I attended was 2004. I can't believe it's been that long. This also marks the first season back since about 2006. Tony flew Sportman on Sunday and enjoyed the Steak Roast, Combat and the Night Fly...I think he will make a few contests with me next year as well. We had a great time and if you didn't attend the D4 Champs, you missed great flying, great weather, and great people. We are back, and I'll get my 2M planes ready for next year...Flying the Kaos 40 was enjoyable and I did better than I thought I might. Larry

RE: 2010 US Nats... share YOUR story
ORIGINAL: wattsup It makes sense to me that if Mark had won 1ST place in F3A then it seems only prudent for him to head up the USA Team at the Worlds! In other words, the Nationals F3A 1st Place Winner automatically makes the Team! Again, something does not make sense. BTW, I want a response from Derek. Your sources may serve you well, but to me, they are a third-hand. Thanks___Everette
I don't have a dog in this fight...But since there are rules, everyone must follow them...If Mark wanted to compete for a team spot, he should have seeked to understand the selection criteria... Another point is the stress of competition is elevated by knowing your are competing for the spot. To fly with out that stress and then after the fact and be awarded the team spot is taking away from somebody who burdened themselves with the added stress. It is an unfair advantage. Hence, who is to say a given pilot would not make mistakes under the added stress...Many great people choke under pressure. At this level, just a micro-second laps of focus could be the difference. Not taking anything away from Mark...He's got a nice resume', and probably would not have flown any differently. However, we have rules to even the playing field. My .02... Larry Diamond

Actually, I am picking up Pete C and we are heading down to watch the last round of semis and the finals tomorrow. Back on topic I have been into pattern for years and have NEVER witnessed pattern snobbery. Mind you, there have been people and conversations that I could have interpreted as such if I were looking for a reason to call then snobs, but, like everything else in life, people will hear what they want to hear and come to their own conclusions regardless of what the reality is. I will say this, I love pattern and pattern people, having had the opportunity to meet Jim and Ann (Rick, Dennis, and many many, many others) and fly with them has made both my enjoyment of the hobby, and I say this in all honesty, my life better! You are all the best that the world has to offer and help me maintain what is left of my fragile faith in humanity [:)] Thank you Anthony
Nice words Anthony...I'll share my two cents...As I have never witnessed snobbery in the pattern community either. From a personal touch...I have been through some very tough times this past year. I typically don't have many people I call friends. At my lowest of lows, I reached out to the pattern folks. I received a great deal of support from those that knew me, heard of me, and yet some that most likely didn't know who I was. Great People, Great Friends, and the comfort to know they are there when the chips are down in life. My wish, is for all of us to pass it on down the line... Larry
