RE: Ryobi 16
I got a Delta Model SA180 with 1" belt and 8" disk. Very well constructed. All cast iron and very sturdy. Had a choice between that and one of the same size but in aluminum. I chose the heavier one. It doesn't move and is sturdier. Paid about $100 a couple of years ago.

RE: Dedicated Cessna 182
One of our float flying buddys tried this on a Citabria and found that the wheel wells caused so much drag that he couldn't get airborne. He had to take off from the shore and land on the water. He had nose and main wheels on each float.

RE: Scale Radial Supplier?
Williams Brothers doesn't make a complete model of the Jacobs, but they offer models of the J-5 cylinders in 1/5 scale at $9.50 each. They don't offer a model of the crankcase in 1/5 scale. You would have to scratch build that part. Here's a pointer to their page with the cylinders on it. just off the top of my head, I'd suggest Williams Bros or FTE (Frank Tiano Enterprises). A notion of the scale, eg, 1/6, 1/7, etc. would also be a help here.

RE: Sullivan Golden Rod, lousy stuff !
The expansion coefficient of steel is less than you should worry about. According to Machinery's Handbook, it is 6.33 millionths of an inch per unit length per degree Fahrenheit. If your temperature changes 10 deg F, the expansion will be 10 times the coefficient per unit length. Not really enough to worry about.

No idea unless you know of something heavier than lead. Use the lead strips and mount them to the firewall after you have moved the battery pack as far forward as possible. I enclose my nose weights in small plywood boxes so that they are easier to keep clean. bb

RE: Motor problems OS FS 120 on 1/4 cub
Have you checked the idle mixture? Maybe the engine is starting to load up a little and that might make the transition difficult. If you pinch the fuel line while at idle, the rpm should increase a little before the engine dies. If it dies quickly, the mixture is too lean. If it runs quite while before the rpm increases, it is too rich. Any changes to the idle mixture should be made a little at a time, e.g., 1/8 turn at a time. Hope this helps.

RE: HOW TO RECOVER FROM AN UNINTENTIONAL SPIN?
If you are having true tip stalls, the ailerons are the last control you will want to use. In a stall, the wing is not generating enough lift to fly and using an aileron will only aggravate the situation. You should use the rudder to raise the lower wing, just like in a full-scale plane. Like was said some time back, it is not possible to recover from a stall near the ground on landing. Practice your landing approach a couple of mistakes high and see how your plane reacts. Planes with a heavier wing loading, like a warbird, will have a higher landing speed than your typical trainer.

RE: Landing Gear
My guess is that 1/4" is too thick. Most of the commercial gear that I've seen on Stiks looks more like 5/32". The best bet would be to check in a hobby shop. Since all of your bends will be less than 90 degrees, I don't think you should have any problems with cracking. That seems to be what Stang is hinting at too. Let us know how it turns out.

RE: Alibre - Questions and Please Add any Tips and Tricks
All of my experience is with SolidWorks (SW) so, I am not sure that what I say will work, but you could give it a try or maybe it will give you some ideas on what to try. In SW, I would create a plane where the surface of the former should be then create a curve on that plane by inserting a projected curve using the sketch on surface method. That curve would represent the edge of the former where it meets the inside of the fuselage planking. The curve may need to be cleaned up a bit, but it should be usable. Maybe this or something similar would work with Alibre. You could ask the people at Alibre for the best way to accomplish this if you have a registered copy, otherwise, you could find a website devoted to Alibre and ask the users there.

RE: Using wood other than balsa
Spruce is used in full-scale homebuilts. It should be OK. I can agree with the post on the suitability of cedar. The natural oil is what makes it weather resistant. Something that one of our local kit manufacturers uses for wing ribs is corrugated cardboard with cap strips on the edges to stiffen it. It is light and very strong when used in this manner. He is building a 1/2 scale Pfalz D.3 this way and it has a 15-foot wingspan.

Have you considered a PT-22?? There was one at last year's World Championship Scale competition in Poland. I believe it was from Sweden. The frame was constructed of U-sections bent from sheet aluminum. The skin was riveted on. Here's a picture of it for your reference. Don't know any of the specifics on it, but it flew well.

RE: charger recommendations
Check into the Pro Peak Prodigy II charger from Ripmax. It will handle lead-acid, NiCd, NiMh, and LiPo batteries. The input voltage is 12 vdc like from your car (or field box) battery. Output charge rate is adjustable. It also has a two line LCD readout to tell you what going on. Best part is the price. Last time I checked it was only $75.00. I heard about from one of the members of the US Scale Team at the World Championships in 2008.

RE: No fly for lithium batteries?
Not sure if the ban still exists, but Lithium batteries were a "pax pro" (passengers prohibited) item when shipped on military cargo aircraft in 2000 and before. The only way they could be shipped with pax on board was if they were contained in the device that they were intended to be used in. It's not surprising that they would be banned from commercial airliners since these carry passengers. I don't think the ban applies to laptop computers or cameras with the batteries installed, but I could be wrong. That would really but a dent in business travel if the "road warriors" couldn't take their computers with them. Just my $.02 worth.
