RE: T-34/85 Winter version with DX5e
Nice stuff. Have you done anything in the gearbox to reduce/eliminate that horrible gear hop that likes to happen in these things? Thats the only thing keeping me from driving mine regularly. It seems that the axels just need some shimming to keep them tight.

RE: Anyone else have a Tamiya TXT-1?
I have a blank TXT- chassis. its got full running gear in it just needs motors and pinions. What would you guys suggest for a good ESC /motor combo for it. It also only has the front steering servo in it but it is set up to have another servo bolted right in. Not gottne into the rock crawler scene yet and i know this isnt the best chassis for it. For crawling it does seem rather stuff and should have more flex. I just want to get it up and running outright for now. Looking for some oomph but dont need a burner.

RE: New life to an old Cat
Gearbox rebuild went well. It shines like new. all major points lubed. The bushings werent as bad as i though. After a good cleaning the fit actually tightened up a bit. There was 30 years of gunk, lube and grit on it. The whole assembly was just black and nasty. My wife thought i was working on a real tank from how black my hands were. Just waiting for my batts to charge so i can adjust the clutch discs and give it a final check run.

RE: New life to an old Cat
I know this thread is old and i havent been on the boards for a while. Been out of the RC tank mindset for a bit. The King Tiger will now be getting its gearbox overhauled. I havent really cleaned it well since i got it. Well tonight i got all of the gears out of it. Man what a mess. I will be replacing some gears with other spares from a Leopard 1 clutch box. Not all the gears are the same but the key ones that need swapping do match. Keep your eyes peeled. Right now they are soaking in degreaser.

There is a 1/8 scale AAV-7 available and it is amphibious. Has small waterjets installed in it. You can get the details from www.mark-1-tank.co.uk

The battery is basically the same. You can use the same charger on it too. The price you said is about the average as well. Id buy 2 or 3 that way when ou run you can have more time to enjoy the vehicle. I have 3 for mine and it gives me good day long outings.

RE: Just bought used 1/6 M5 Stuart Tank-
ORIGINAL: BIGMIG Well I finally got my 1/6 HUMMER,through some problems addressed above.I'm glad I decided to take possession of it from the post office instead of letting them return it.It arrived in good condition with just a few minor scratches. It for sure was a new one still in the box. This hummers are big and look very strong and well built.I'm chargging the battery and will do some running tests later on today. If the running tests work out OK I will be very happy with this new addition to my collection. Will be posting pictures of it a little later.-------------BIGMIG [;)][;)][;)]
BEFORE you drive it use a small flat head and pop the center caps off the wheels. This will get you access to the nut holding the wheel to the axel. Then remove the 3 screws on the backside of the hubs. this will seperate the rim. Once that is apart you can run the tire under some hot water to allow it to stretch. Remove the nasty hard plastic insert from the tire. Doing this will save your steering servo alot of shock from bumps that could otherwise snap the spline on teh servo. When you go to put the wheel back on just run a bead of super glue around the rim half before you installe it. This will help prevent tire slip. I have run mine on this and have not had my steering arm pop at all.

RE: Cleaning the Treads!
You could also put them in the top rack of a dish washer. I know of a couple 1/6 tankers that have done this when moving to different countries. Customs will impound it if theres too much dirt on the vehicle.

RE: curiosity
Technically they were BUT No german tank unit had the hooked cross in their unit or field markings. They all retained the standard cross. Any pictures of german tanks with a hooked cross had it allpied outside the unit and were not official. They had flags for ariel identification and thats about as close as it got.

RE: Jagdpanther zimmerit
I believe the cut away JP in the imperial war museum London has Zimmerit and a bolt on mantlet. Its an early body. Any without the crew heater but with the bolt on mantlet are considered the "mid" production. Basically if you put the crew heater on dont put zimmerit on is the easiest way to remember it. I have the crew heater and zimmerit on mine but i wanted to do it this way plus who says a mid prod with zim didnt get a crew heater installed by bugging the maintenance crew at a later time.

RE: Paint and zimmerit question
The Zimmerit could be shop or field applied. Also the patterns could vary. Theres photo evidence of Tiger 1s with waffle pattern on the lower hull and ridged on the turret or waffle all over. It used to be assumed that the Stug 3 only had the waffle pattern. Most panther A and Ds that had zimmerit had the pattern so the ridges ran down tthe tank and not across like on the king tiger or tiger 1. There was also rough applied zimmerit that looked more like the stucco on the side of a house and had no real pattern to it. Then the checkerboard pattern on the JPs and Panthers as well. To make colored zimmerit that looks realistic when chipped i use a artists acrylic paste and mix tamiya dark yellow into it before i spread it. That way when the zim chips it has the proper color to it. As for the undercoat. I normally go with a dark grey for heavily chipped areas. Though these would probably be repainted if the area was too large to preserve the camo coloring of the tank in battle.

RE: Red Tracks
Its surface rust But notice it is very dark not a bright red/orange brown.. In the desert tracks would get like that overnight when not used but would return to a darker sheen with earthy tones the moment it was used. Every unused german track i have seen even original unused museum kept track has a dark grey black color to it. Look at the spare link sitting on the spare road wheel it is an obvious dark greyblack color compared to the one underfoot. The one underfoot was prbably used and removed or recovered from a damaged vehicle for use as spares.

RE: Red Tracks
I have been saying ALL this since day one. Theres an M-32 here at a surplus store thats been sitting for DECADES. No rust on the tracks or majority of the tank. Mainly a little rust on bolts added by crew or around field mods. Put it simply guys STOP USING RED PRIMER ON YOUR TRACKS. It looks weird and kills the scale effect of the model. Heres how your track should look.

RE: 1/16 E-100
The E-100 is MUCH larger than a king tiger. The PROTOTYPE had a modified King Tiger motor installed but production ones were to have a more powerful motor installed. For me its the fact it was ALMOST completed that makes me want to build one. To see what one would have looked like moving on the field among other tanks of the time. There is a 1/6 Maus out there. It looks aewsome.

RE: Safest charge time?
Or just get a super brain peak charger that will shut off automatically when the battery is done. It charges my 3600 ma batts in about 45-60 minutes depending on how used they are and time of last charge.

RE: bought 1/6 Humvee-would like info on these please
Now there are 2 shocks per wheel and the arms appear thicker compared to the TAN issue 1st gen hummers. Alot of the bad reputation spreads from those first issue ones. The last batch of hummers has alot of improvements. Notice the pic of the underside i posted. it shows the arms somewhat and how the shocks are mounted. they are the same per wheel station. Also all the electrics are housed in a box inside the vehicle and not free bolted to the chassis tubes. The battery has a tray in the electrics box under the roof turret hatch. It comes with a big rubberband to hold the battery down but its redundant since the access hatch has 4 pegs on it which hold it in place once fastened down. This is better than the old place the battery was stored under the rear cargo hatch. It locates the battery weight toward the vehicles natural center of gravity. Again it is HIGHLY advisable to carefully pop the center cap off the wheel hub and remove the wheel. This will allow you to disassemble the rim halves and remove the hard plastic support inside the tire. It is what causes alot of the spline snapping sinc it doesnt allow the tire to compress. I have done this on my hummer and my cannibalized steering servo has not had any trouble. Yes i had 2 hummers. The gearboxes for driving the wheels is completely metal fron the spurr gear through to the output shafts. Theres nothing thats going to strip this unless you do it on purpose.

RE: bought 1/6 Humvee-would like info on these please
ORIGINAL: secretsg Reposted the pics like you wanted. The front suspension from I can see is just a mono shock setup like on the old Tamiya buggies. Probably not oil filled. The servo saver is a spring loaded type. At this size I'd recommend something with min 100oz of torque. Battery for all 21st century stuff is the standard lead acid gel cell. You can buy them at at any hobby store. For example http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXL370&P=7
WOW they did change the design ALOT. mine looks nothing like that in the chassis. WOW.

RE: bought 1/6 Humvee-would like info on these please
ORIGINAL: secretsg If you want to make it more "hobby grade" you can just install an ESC like Novak Superduty, Traxxas EVX or E-Savage one. Use a Yeah Racing LED kit/Tamiya TLU unit and install standard receiver. I would think even a 4 shock mod would be easy in that monster body.
Actually the 1/6 hummer has 8 shocks in it. But like the real thing it has independant suspension. Being a little softer wouldnt hurt it though. I have been considering putting softer springs on but i cant for the life of me figure out how to get the shocks off. They are press fit or riveted on. Theres no easy way to remove them safely. I had considered the ESC swap myself but this thing is running 700 size motors. Youd need a damn good ESC to take that kind of pull. Overall it isnt that bad. The suspension is ROBUST. Most i have seen now come with thick WHITE nylon arms. Heavy duty stuff. I hit my chassis up with some good semigloss black paint and its sticking well for the most part. The universals at each axel are tough too. Youd need to hit it with a sledge hammer in anger to do any appreciable damage to the drive components. Aside from weak stering servos , (IE cant turn sitting still) and splines snapping this thing is built like a brick. The plastic is a nice thick ABS/polystyrene blend. I have a second body i am converting to an M-1114 uparmored hmmwv and teh sheet plastic im using bonds nicely with some MEK based liquid cement. The detail opportunities abound for this thing. 21C did well by releasing a very baseline hummer body. For those who want to remove the bumpers just pop the 2 round caps off the bumpers and theres a phillips head screw underneath. This will let you take the bumpers off. Once those are off you can brace the rod that they mounted to and unscrew them from the other end insde the chassis. They arent structural.
