RE: Official Hobby Zone
BTW...I have my Cub batteries for sale...I have 4 minus the one involved in the crash...so 3 are listed here on RCU if you want to check them out. I'm selling them cheap, so don't wait if you want a look.

Yea, it's a bummer. Not my starter plane though. More of a anytime-anywhere airplane. I have flown a few trainers and foamie jets. I wanted to try something different. While it lasted it was great! Yea, I tried to redeem the plane, but after I put a whole tube of thick CA, other glue and wood skewers into it, it still wasn't going to be anywhere near airworthy! Very nice paint job though! Mine didn't come nearly as shiny as that! Good luck keeping it airborne and airworthy! [:)] Best of luck to the rest of you other crazy Cub'ers. It's been good getting and giving advice to all of ya. Peace.

Right...you can't stall and roll over, or other maneuvers, but you can still do some sweet tricks with flying wings! Plus if you add perpendicular wingtips you can add "rudder" control. (this is why I can't make up my mind!) What would you do?

RE: Official Hobby Zone
Thanks for the tips....BUT I totalled my plane last night! Wing snapped off while going into a loop and the Cub rocketed into the ground from about 100 feet. Cowl/nose of the plane is smashed and separated from the rest of the fuselage. The midzone of the fuse is crunched up and cracked. None of the electronics work...(that surprised me). The only good things left are the right wing (which floated away in midflight), the tail section, and my expensive battery (WHEW)! I tried to piece the rest of the plane back together, but it's not looking so hot! Darn Murphy was right....the amount of time you spend modifying is indirectly proportional to the amount of successful flight time! haha Oh well...it was about time to upgrade anyways!

Flying Wing or Low Wing
I'm looking to get a new plane this summer but I'm not sure what to get. I've flown 3 and 4 channel trainers (electric and glow), a Stryker, and an Ultra Stick. I want to fly fast, and still keep the option to slow down. (10-80mph would be nice) I want some aerobatics...actually most scale aerobatics Needs to be electric....it's been great so far! Easy repairs are a plus Budget is around $500 minus Tx/Rx (but cheaper is better if quality is still good) SO the question is, would I be best off with a FLYING WING or a LOW WING????

OK, so here is my CUB finally painted and "decals" applied! I found a nut at Fleet Farm that now holds my prop on. Works just fine! Pic three is my custom window so I can read my onboard volt/ampmeter, lots easier than taking the wing off everytime! btw...this is my first time uploading pics, so let me know if they don't show up...thanks!

Anyone know the max amperage that the stock ESC can handle? I recently bought a Turnigy lipo and now I realize it is a 20-30C not the stock 15-25C. Could this damage anything or is it safe to use?

Hey all, I have recovered from my recent incident with a large tree and am back in the air. Does anyone know the highest amperage that can be pulled through the stock ESC without damage to the plane? I just bench tested a new Turnigy battery and it is reading 14.8A nearing full throttle and I'm wondering if this is ok.

TwoSlick2...is it still acting up? Make sure that the ACT function is turned off on your transmitter...I have mine CA'ed to the off setting so I don't trip it accidentally. If it's still acting up after that, I would try to get a replacement reciever from Hobby Zone. Hope that helps.

RE: Official Hobby Zone
TwoSlick2 I had the same problem, all I had to do was unplug the ACT sensors from the ESC. After that I had the throttle starting at about 1/4 and actually staying at full throttle! (Amazing, huh?!) I love this plane, it's fairly agile considering its only a 3 channel. I did a accidental loop at about 30-40 feet and came within 5 feet of the ground at the bottom of the loop, really got my heart beating, but it survived yet more of my abuse!

Ok, I was thinking there wasn't one. Too bad because I have a guy who was willing to train on a larger plane as long as I brought my own controller. Yea, my next step is to get a Futaba 7 or 8 channel radio with receiver and servos (as needed for my future planes). Did the switch to Futaba or any other aftermarket radio gear add noticeable weight? I wouldn't think it would add much, but I've been wrong about that kind of stuff before.

RE: Official Hobby Zone
CMGvsMTB, you could try cutting two thin lines near the center of the wing where the dihedral starts...this way it takes pressure off of the wings from the bending effect. After you do that I personally would add a 1" wide strip of more monokote, or put down a 1/4" line of trim, it's up to you though...good luck!

RE: Creating a better FLYING WING
Thanks for the long post... So overall, you might suggest a 84" span with 10" center chord going down to 6 or 7 at wingtips...a pusher prop, and only a small angle for the swept wing (10*-25*)? Colors should be contrasted between Left & Right on top, and also on bottom (eg... Neon green/black on top and orange/blue on bottom) Would it be necessary to have vertical wingtips? Make sure I have one thing straight....the higher the Renolds #, the better correct? (I'll have to do some reading on that too) Also, I'm thinking 1.2" might not be thick enough for my 3S 1300mah 11.1v batteries... would it be better to get thinner batteries or thicken the wing to 1.5"-1.75"???

Creating a better FLYING WING
Lately I have seen quite a few locals with flying wings and I have been quite impressed at the variance in flight quality, some I have seen are super fast, others not so much, some fly quite stable, others seem like a miscalculated blink could sent the plane plummeting to the ground. I own (have owned) two planes and feel the need for speed, but also want to keep in tact with slower flight too! So here are my ideas! I want to build a flying wing this summer, but I have some basic questions about aerodynamic behavior, construction techniques, possibly new ideas for flying wings, and the less known woes of flying wings. Ultimately I want to make a wing that meets the following criteria: 1. Capable of flying at 10mph-100+mph (Focusing on slower speeds) 2. Capable of gliding for a while 3. All electric powered 4. Easily seen at longer distances 5. Moderately stable flight, but capable of all scale flight maneuvers (maybe even some not-scale maneuvers such as flatspins) 5. Budget stays under $500 USD (TX/RX not included in price)[X(] Here are some of my current ideas for the design: 1. 48"-72" wingspan with a shorter chord length will increase gliding properties and allow for slower flights 2. Have a thicker center chord for more stable faster flight and more structural strength plus room for electronics 3. Have streamers connected to wingtips for better visual aid Here are some of my questions: 1. Is it best to have a standard or pusher prop setup? 2. If pusher is better, would at rear of plane or in middle (with center of wing cutout) be optimal for flight characteristics? 3. What is the best overall setup for control surfaces (split elevons, standard elevons, etc...)[sm=confused_smile.gif] 4. Any well known airfoils to stick with or avoid? 5. Any thing that should definitely be avoided? Any comments, suggestions, concerns, knowledge, hints, tips, crazy ideas, and cruel analysing of my thoughts are ALL WELCOME! [:D]
ORIGINAL: gws_003 double capacity is what you want for longer flight times,,,double voltage and it should scream till it burns out,,might try that,,,,stock motor 10 bucks [:D][:D][:D]
Won't double voltage also fry the ESC? Also is there any chance that the burning might cause an actual fire in flight? Or will it just fry and stop working?

RE: Official Hobby Zone
Well, I got the first real damage to my Cub tonight...I was flying at dusk and misjudged the height of a 4' berm in front of the parking lot where I land at a sports complex. Needless to say my landing gear torqued backward and pulled itself and the battery door off and the Cub came to a skid 20' later. no wing damage luckily...just belly rash and bent-up gear. Now seems like a good time to upgrade to more heavy-duty LG! I just got my two new batteries, and am testing tomorrow...if i want to connect them to have longer run times do I connect in series or parallel? I ordered a parallel adapter, but I have a haunting suspicion I chose the wrong one....[sm=71_71.gif]

Need opinions on material for flying wing
I am new to the fiberglass, CF, etc.... (modern composites) concept in R/C so I don't know too much about it besides what I have researched so far. Here is my problem. I am making a foam core, brushless powered, flying wing (approx 60" wingspan) for a competition with some buddies and I don't know what material to cover with, how thick, what method, etc... I have a few requirements too: 1) Needs to be paintable (or coverable w/ monokote or similar material) 2) Needs to be extremely light weight 3) Needs to hold most of the rigidity of a 30" span (I am making it so the wings will separate and will be held together by a CF rod in the middle 2') 4) Needs to be under $100 and fairly easy to apply. If anyone has suggestions, tips or things to avoid, please let me know. I'd like to get it covered this month if possible. (competition is in September) Thanks!

Cool, I just got my Deans on, I have two batteries and an onboard volt/current meter on the way and a fuselage mod I thought might help along with a new landing gear setup. My cub is going to be a heavy one, but its gonna be sweet. Current weight is 810 grams, final weight will be around 950 grams or just over 2 lbs. I may have to start finding ways to lose a bit of that weight...I'll post pics next week after I get the goodies on. I've had 15-25mph gusts for the past 2 days and it looks like the same for a few more...no flying for a while. Btw CJG...I read up more on the batteries, so I think I'm understanding it now. Thanks for the help.

Ok, CJG still trying to understand this....so a 1500mah, 10c battery is too powerful for the Cub, but a 1500, 15C or 20C would be much better...right? Or should the draw be purposely less than the output so it doesn't end up with "negative pressure" so to speak? So then how and when do the bursts in increased amperage effect the esc?
