Another great race. Awesome to see the Cali racers as well as the Chino and Tucson guys. I dont think I have ever seen so many break outs... you guys need to slow down. :) It just shows how well everyone is racing and hitting the poles. Looking forward to another one.

RE: need cg help
Took another 1/4 oz off tail, reduced throws and it flew much better. I would never race it as it isnt 130 ish, yet flies good for this beginner just thinking of racing. We had to shim the L/G forward to accept the reduce aft CG. Then it seemed fine. i got 4 more set up flights on it today. Turns like a lead sled (heavy model). It is now flying with 1 1/2 oz of less tail weight. Cant believe it even flew with all that originally on it. Thx for the input guys.

Well the race is just a couple days away. I am certain you guys will have a blast and do well. Go SUPRA!!! I have commitments here in Utah so will be absent but I did get a chance to take my Stiletto out today in Honor of the Chino Race, and had a ball. A couple of the elderly pilots were commenting behind me, "where is it", "can you see it", "thats just too fast". What a wonderful day!

RE: RCPRO Club 40, bubbless tanks after 2012, etc
I agree Don, most races are won by those nasty required turns, :) It really comes down to setting up right, even the tank. If it is not filled properly it benefits nothing. Even if it is filled right and the main needle is allowing air in, it wont yiled a thing. There are lots of "little" things that yield the advantage. Talent and knowledge of what to do is most vital. I often say I need a faster plane just so I can keep up. :) I have, like many here, been around various types of racing and have accumulated many good and some great ideas to help. Again the line needs to be drawn (or not), on what is or isnt allowed. I hate stock clunk tanks from some ARF's. I love Sullivan tanks and even can tolerate Dubro. Other than that I would replace most stock tanks on a racer. Since I am going to replace them my choice would be a bubbless. [;)]

RE: RCPRO Club 40, bubbless tanks after 2012, etc
I understand that and the point really was that the advantage to a bubbless set up isnt the straight speed, unless one knows to set it up properly and get the extra 100 or more rpm out of it on the ground vs the clunkers, the true benefit seems to me to be in the corners where g forces play against the clunk system. Most of the pylon races will be won in the turns, whether you fly a sky raider or a Q500. So many of the points made in this post are valid. -certainly flying skills are vital, knowing when to release, and how to head straight to a pylon and avoid the speed killing effects of control surface input - small things, that when added up, make a big enough difference to yield a benefit -these things would be, not drilling the baffles, colder plugs, bubbles tanks, head shims, boca bearings, fuel line around needle, taped hinge areas, and breaking a motor in properly and using good synthetic oils to treat the parts to better lube them. - add to this better and more precise linkages, servos and Tx's. - lighter soinners to avoid excess vibration to out of balanced cranks.... When enough things are added they WILL make a difference. Of course many will argue for or against each and every item I listed as it has been their experience vs yours. I tested each of these items and came to my own conclusions. The post is for the area of bubbless tanks. IMO they alone make a little difference, but a difference non the less. But with many of the other little tweaks that can be done, well there does seem to be a clear advantage. I guess the point will be, where do you draw the line on that list of enough little differnces?

RE: RCPRO Club 40, bubbless tanks after 2012, etc
Just an observation on the original post in regards to clunk or bubbless tanks: No straight speed increase, Is arguable- but through the corners there is a definate advantage. I race a viper and have the jett tank set up. When and if I win, it is by the turn, not the straights. I can set my plane closer to the peak RPM' with the Jett tank where others need to be 300-400 off. That is a slight advantage for me of about 100-200 rpms. But it is in the corners where my plane slingshots out of the turn. It is quite obvious too. These are just my observations

RE: Another WM P-51 GS Build Thread
Barry, I would be real interested abd super appreciative in seeing some close ups certain critical areas: - the wing bays and how well reinforced they are or arent. If some sheeting and total glassing would work it may be a good plane for me to try and incorporate in a bigger engine size - Tail structure (horz and vert) - Fire wall reinforcement - Landing gear structure at mount areas.

Don, I think that engine size is the right call for that airframe. This will give many an opportunity to experience the bigger perspective of pylon racing while yet on a small enough budget. Great job!

RE: P-51 Giant Scale Racing class - Proposed
The USRA warbird class wants all stock warbirds and not reno type racers. So if your plane had the stock configuration set up and meets the minimum 82" wing span for this year (possibly 80" revised for next year) it will work, it can be covered how ever you want. I just told the wife, I am getting a WM Rockwell. She said' Im fine with that". yea baby!! Id like to stuff a DA50 in that thing, just happen to have one! [:D]

Racing Over seas
I stumbled across a video on ***tube and it was a racing video. You guys gotta check this out. If this video was from the states I probably wouldnt post it for fear that negative publicity to American racing is not needed. But it appears to be over seas some where and you can watch and figure that out for yourself. What made me laugh, with tongue in cheek cause some of the happenings are so bizzare, was when: The street (thats right a road was their runway) was loaded with guys flying anything from Miss Marie to Shrike with no real order to what they were doing. The guys are lined up in front of each other, all on the road, engines running waiting to take off. One goe loses control of his P51 and runs to catch it. Another cant seem to get the jet straight and has to abort the take off only to jump back in line when I am sure another plane was readying to launch. Then a car who is on that road, drives right thru there little gathering place. The car I am sure is not part of the organized group, but just its way to get some groceries or something from the local market. It then appears they all get airborne, and by all I mean like 7-10 planes. Notice, no set backs, no hard hats no nothing. Just a "run what ya brung" type event. Then another car passes thru, from the pilots station, yes it seems they stood on west bound lane and raced over the east bound lane. Just makes me so glad for our safety minded events. All I can say is wow!! But in their defense I do believe they had a traffic spotter, not a pilot spotter but a guy designated to make sure the pilots, all 10 of them dont get run over. Crazy. Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TQhNr8ewF4&feature=related

RE: P-51 Giant Scale Racing class - Proposed
Don, It would be a benefit to all if we could combine these planes to be versatile for sure. I applaud you for efforts and open mindedness on this. It takes a lot of work to develope a class with rules that are practical and keep the intent of the class in sight. When we started the 50cc warbird class it was for the pilot that had one of these already in his/her hanger that thought, "I'd like to try racing this on a course". You are right , they are big and require certain logistics that a 40 size doesnt . When I got into the USRA, I was fortunate enough to have many things I could use to haul these around. But my first gasser airplane was a F1GT. So I jumped in over my head. Your approach will help people ease into this w/o creating too big of a jump for their first step. Excellent job!

RE: P-51 Giant Scale Racing class - Proposed
Hey guys, I like this class. In some ways I wish you had gone to the 55cc size just so we could enjoy racing the same planes in different venue styles like RCPRO and the USRA. But I understand the costs by going larger. I think the average cost of the planes in the USRA were around $1500. That depends what all you had in your inventory already. The EVO58 was a good engine choice. The DA60 would be screaming fast. Last year at Rabbit dry lake bed was the first race featuring the new 50cc (45-65) class. I was hoping for 150 MPH but believe they looked more like the Sundowner Class speeds of 130 MPH. I am certain after time guys will get these things closer to 140 - maybe. The problem is the airfoil on the wings are more sport friendly than race friendly and the stock engine limits holds these things to a very moderate speed. I am hearing there will be a few more at this years season opener in KS in June. So we will see what improvements have been made or other choices that may yield more speeds. The reason we opened it up to such a variety is so if one manufacturer decides to end a certain plane we have many more to turn to and arent at the mercy of the distributors. Something to think about even for this class. I hope you guys get this class off the ground. It offers "Bigger" w/o breaking the bank.

I have a Kelly F1D with a OS 50 and stock pipe. Even though this is not a legal airframe, it is similar in engine size and cleaness of frame. I am quite confident the Kelly would easily break out in Bronze. I say, come down. It would be worth it to you as the races are awesome. Myself and a couple others went to Ogden a few years back to race Q500's and had a blast. The truth is almost all races are worth the trip. Good people and great times.

To give you an idea: A Phoenix Strega with a TT 46 and a pipe is competitive in the bronze class. The Tucano is a much cleaner plane. Maybe Terry and Bert can chime in on it's legality. I took a brief look at the rules and it appears it is legal. As long as it meets the minimum 400 sq in.
