RE: ULTRA SPORT 1000
Thanks for the compliments on the covering. I enter'd it in Monocoats covering contest & got third place. Always draws a crowd while at the field, & then when they see the bottom from the ground. I will typically fly for around 10-12 minutes then land. With a 16 ounce tank on board, I have maybe 1/4 tank left when I land. I do not fly full throttle for the whole flight, but throttle up & down through out the whole flight.

BASHING AN EXTRA 300 KIT INTO AN SBACH
I have a Great Planes "Extra 300" kit & I think the size & shape will be just right to allow some bashing to take place & make it more of an "SBach" looking aircraft. I do not see any kits for an Sbach & I really do not want to spend 3-4 hundred on an arf. I have a DLE 20 which should be just right for it. I just need to find some good 3-views of an Sbach so I can start drawing out the differances on what I need to change. Anybody have any clue as to where I may find such drawings? I have looked everywhere I know of, but nothing so far. Thanks for any help anyone may give. Bill

RE: GP Extra 300S build
Hello ameyam, I too just got one of these kits last week & will be using the same engine in mine. I also want to do 3-d with it. From all I have read on this, it needs to loose some weight to do 3-d well. I am still investigating this. I can keep this thread up to date as I find out things if you'd like. I will subscribe to this thread to keep up with your build. good luck. I was just trying to upload a picture or 2 and things just are not working right now, I will try again later. Bill

RE: Kit talk...
When I lived in N.E, Ohio, I would build more in the winter than in the summer, but I flew & built all year round. Now I live in N.Carolina & fly more in the spring & fall, (due to heat) but still build all year long. I am probably 50/50 in loving the building just as much as the flying. In all 32 years, I have never done an A.R.F & have really only considered it only once. Kits, or scratch building has been the only way. There have been a few swap-shop type buys through out the years, but those are not true arfs in my book.

RE: Own-design pod n' boom sport planes: .45-.62
Years ago there was a plane called "the yard dart". It had a carbonfiber tube fuselage & a hard wood profile type center section to mount the engine & wing center ribs to. I loved that plane & have wanted to build another for many years now. Well, here is my attemp at it. This time i made it a 60 size & used an aluminum channel for the tail boom. I also added L.E.D. lights inside to allow me to fly at our night flys we have.

RE: ULTRA SPORT 1000
Built mine a year ago & love every minute flying it. Saito 1.80 with flaps, & retracts out 1 bay as Minn had said. Its not a 3-d plane, but sure is a great plane to fly.

RE: Any cool original designs out there? Lets see some pictures?
I had built this thing 2 years ago & it is still turning heads at the field. It was a "Sweepee" from Aug. 1989 Model Aviation. I built one back then & had a blast with it. I wanted to do one bigger, so I took the original size & added to it to come out with this at 88 inch wingspan. Flies great in no wind & with some wind, it is a blast. It is heavy & will not fly out of sight verticaly, but it is very fast straight out. It also slows down to a crawl & hovers nicly & even flys backwards with some wind.

RE: Greyhound shipped plane, LOST! , HELP!
WOW, WOW, & WOW!!!!!!! I have never used Greyhound for shipping, or pay-pal, & now after keeping up with this, I for sure NEVER WILL. I should feel lucky as I had taken greyhound from Cleveland Ohio to Athens Alabama & back again way back in 1985 & did not get lost or misplaced. My wife may not have put forth such efforts to find me as you have done Dennis, & $300.00 insurance money was probably worth more to my wife back then than I was. lol. Bill.

RE: Great Planes Ultimate 40 size
I do not want to bore any of you with too simple of building steps as I start building this Ultimate. I will try to highlight the things that are not so simple/normal in a kit build such as this. I have taken the parts out of all there sheets & have blown them up on paper to a size that will allow me to cut all that I need to build a larger Ultimate later. (Just about exactly the older 90-1.20 kit size.) This kit starts with the tail pieces built first, & some of these pieces are two 1/8" pieces glue'd together to have a 1/4" piece. I prefer to have a 1/4" piece of wood to make a 1/4" part, not two 1/8" pieces, but thats just me. A good amount of sanding is required to make these 1/8" sandwiched pieces flat, square & smooth on there edges for getting a good glue joint. Some of these reguired a small piece of wood to be glue'd onto its edge to bring it back to its proper size after sanding to get the edges cleaned up. At this stage of anything I build, I try to think ahead to what I might want to do for a covering scheme, as this will help determine how clean my glue joints must be if they might be seen through transparent covering. I always try to do a good glue joint, but there is good enough to hold & will not be seen, & then there is everyone will see it, so it must be the best it can be.

Great Planes Ultimate 40 size
I have had all I can take for now with the Ultra-Sport airplanes that I have built this past year. (4 built in 13 months) So now I am going to try one of these Ultimate bi-planes I have heard so much about. I should have the kit deliver'd Thursday by the "big brown kit delivery truck" I know the bigger 10-300 Ultimate has been discontinued, but I think I will take all the kit parts & plan's from this 40 size & "blow them up" so I will have a 90-120 size scratch kit to built for later. I have an extra O.S. 70 4-strk, & an .61 sf 2 strk not doing anything right now & a couple different 40-50ish 2 strks that would also work. I could do a build thread if there is enough interest. Bill

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Alex, the 1000 is the slowest of all of them, & easiest to fly as the flight is just smooth from start to finish. Its not lazy by any means, just slower & smoother. I think my sixty is the best in terms of which one I have the most fun with when I fly them. The forty is still being messed with as far as triming it out & adjusting the balance to get it how I want it. The smaller "25" scratch built one is the most craziest one as far as how fast it will fly & how quick the manuvers go. It is the one I fly the most often. Its a smoother version of an angry bee in a spin dryer. The twin I scratch built only has 1 flight on it due to engine problems, but it was nice while the flight lasted. I still need to work on getting the engines issues worked out before another flight takes place. hope this helps, Bill

Thank you A.T. that helps alot. I think I am ready to go maiden this radio tomorrow evening, Sat. evening for sure. 42 was also big help with a pm on the subject. I am finding that this is easy to understand as to setting up each model & its features. I have set the 4 receivers into some older planes & I really like it so far. Thanks again for the help, Bill

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Hello all. I bought an Aurora 9 in Nov. last year & it is just now that I'm playing with it. A couple surgery's & other things kept me from doing anything for a while. I have read the book & I even updated the transmitter, module, & all 4 receveirs that I have. Now, for what might seem like a stupid question, "How do I run the short (compaired to 72mhz receveirs) antena wire? & does it have to be outside the fuselage? or can it (should it) be inside the fuselage? Must the wire be straight? or can it be looped or curved from the rec. to the holder? I have the niffty little plasic holders that came with the radio & each receiver, but I found it a lot easier to drill a hole through a piece of balsa & fit the antena into that hole to hold it snug. Here are a few picture of how I did 2 of my planes, but if I did this wrong, then I do not want to continue till I find out which way is correct. Thanks for any help you might provide on this, Bill

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
I am almost done with the covering. I hope to fly it this weekend. I still need to set up the controls & balance it, but it is possible. Without the servos, battery, or receiver, she is 8lb, 5oz. I am hoping for under ten pounds all up ready to fly.

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
This is my first twin & I had thought about a servo in each engine nacell, but with as tight as things are in there, I opted for a single servo in the center & control cables out to each engine from there. I hope this picture explains it for you. I will let you know how well this is to set up for getting both engines carbs timed together.

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
It has been a while since I posted anything. I had computer problems & then work has really gotten in the way of me having enough good quality time with this hobby, but, I did get more covering done. I wanted something different from the normal type of design that is seen on planes today. Since this twin is being scratch built from a normaly single engine'd plane, I thought why not try to say that in the covering job. I went for the twin engines ripping the covering at the leading edge as they took form & the continued tearing of the old covering to show a second plane underneath. I still need to high light some shading on some spots, but I like the look so far. Bill

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
Ken & Craig, As this developed into shape, I too was not to keen on how that nose piece was looking. The trouble was I used too thin balsa for it & when sanding it to shape, I was sanding through all around when trying to get it round. The triangle stock in each corner held up well, but the top, sides, & bottom needed to be much thicker to still remain without sanding through. So I just left it as it was while I worked on other things. Now I am re-doing the nose with alot thicker balsa & it will be round, & a little shorter, I swear. I need to make it removable to get to the nose gear & linkage. Bill

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
I do not think I will get this in the air by April 1st as I had hoped. After assembling this thing a few times, it was tail heavy BIG TIME. Even using the .46 engines, & angling the landing gear back an inch more, it would not sit without the tail down. I had to relocate all the radio gear to the fuel tank area in the front of the fuselage. As many of you have commented on how quickly I build these things, this one is really taking me forever. I know a big part of the problem was knowing I had to clean my bench, floor, self's & room in general before I could attempt covering. I do build fast, but cleaning is NOT my strong suit. I have just spent a day & 1/2 cleaning & now I just need to sand the fuselage fairings & then blow all the dust off & then start covering.

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
More to update. I redid the nose cone & it does look alot better. But in these pictures, it still looks "sqaured off" but it is round as it can be. Sanded it with sand paper glued to inside of a funnel while changing the taper of the funnel. So it is round. Now it is just a matter of continuing to sand, sand, & sand & shape & smooth, then covering. I did notice with assembling it completly as I have, that this thing is REALLY tail heavy. I will have to put all the radio gear & battery in the fuel tank compartment forward of the wing & add some weight just to get the balance right.

RE: Beginning a twin powered Ultra-Sport 60
Not too much has gotten done that would show well in pictures. The plane is done as far as the basic build goes. Now is the worst part (for me anyway) which is to carve, cut, sand & shape everything to look like an Ultra-sport. I did take the wing to work & sand on it in the parkinglot at lunch, but that makes alot of balsa dust all over my self & the cars parked nearby. I have a few more dings & things to fill with wood filler & final sand, then it will be on to covering. I hope to begin that next week & possibly fly it by April 1st.

Craig, here is what I'm in the process of building right now. An Ultra-Sport sixty kit was used to make all the parts needed to build this one, while keeping the kit intact for later in life. This will be # 5 in my U.S. family & I really will need to take a break from building these things for a while.

RE: Its time to upgrade to 2.4
Well I went & did it. I finally bought a new radio & thanks to this & other threads, I got the Aurora 9 radio. My first thoughts are; WOW, thick manual to read. I thought my JR 347 book was thick when I got that one back in 1993. As it was, that radio is a breeze to work with & set up. I hope this Aurora will be similar to learn how it works. I bought this thing back in November of last year, but with some surgerys & other things getting in my way, I just yesterday was able to finally open the box & look at it. I'm sure I'll be linking to these threads frequently to help with the learning. Bill

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Well I did it. I jumped on to the 2.4 wagon & bought an Aurora 9 radio set. He is my question. I did the purchace on Nov. 30 2010. I took it home & was going to fool with it the next weekend as I had no time til then. Well, as it went, I had surgury for some arm troubles on Dec, 2nd, & it was just yesterday, (March 8th) that I even opened the box to the radio that I bought in Nov. In the box is an offer for a free 7 channel receiver, or one free one & a second at 1/2 price. (39.99) I went to Hitecs web site & now I see that an offer for the same things is on now, But the radio has to be bought between Jan & Apr 2011. So, does anyone know if I lost the ability to get this offer or not? I e-mailed Hitec & have not gotten a responce as of yet. I still have not had time to read much of the manual for this thing. I sure hope it is easy to understand. Bill
