The Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB is a must see. Those of you who attend the D.O.G.S. Rally each year know how awesome it is. Too much to list here but check out the website: http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
I just remembered another mod I made.......When the plane is resting on my Midwest Aerostand, the bottom of the fuse just ahead of the wing is resting on the cradle. This is the area of the oval plastic exhaust details. The area is very weak and was compressing under the weight of the plane. I was able to pop out the oval plastic piece and glue in several stringers that ran front to back between the bulkheads there. The main center one was a hefty 1/4"X 1/2" bass piece. The plastic piece is then glued back in place. No cutting or patching of the covering is required. The fuse is very strong there now and resting in the cradle or lifting from that area is not a problem. I wish I had taken pictures before I closed it up. Dom

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
23 three flights now as of today. The Corsair is a real stable platform and a great aerobatic Warbird. I think I have the landings figured out. Aprox 1/2 throttle on final, 1/4 throttle on short final and then 1/8 throttle just above the numbers and all the way to touch down which is not a wheel landing but not quite a 3 point either. When she is down you can pull all the power off. I have used this technique the last several landings with little to no bounce at all. The only frustrating thing has been that damn dummy radial. It is made of paper thin plastic and has required me to pull the cowl off after every flying session to repair it. I have used some glass cloth were applicable and now have the entire inside coated with a thin layer of goop which should hold everything together while providing some dampening to the vibration. I also swapped out the tail wheel with a 2" Dubro solid rubber aluminum hub tail wheel. I drilled holes around the hub ti lighten it up but mostly to improve it's appearance. It is painted white and looks much better and does not go flat like the stock one.

I have 23 flights on mine now.....full throttle most of the time[:D] and zero rudder issues. It is a sloppy design for sure but so far it is working out OK. Dom

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
I test flew the Corsair today! It came home in one piece with a total of 8 flights on it. The DLE 55 ran great. I had it on the rich side but the Corsair still pulled through large loops and performed nice verticals from ground level and over the top into nice immelmans...rolling out on the 45 degree down line. The corsair handled all maneuvers well such as slow rolls, four point rolls and so on. A very stable plane that handles very sharp considering its size and weight. Slow flight is comfortable and there is no trim needed at 1/2 or full flap (3/4" and 1.5" respectively). Overall, the plane felt very neutral in the air with little elevator needed while inverted. I would say the C.G. is just right for my taste. Approach to landing is made at about 3/4 power with a reduction to 1/2 on final and about 1/4 over the numbers. The Corsair will float but dont let it get too slow. Although there is no sign of stalling, it will result in a bouncy landing. My first landing was amazing....a smooth wheel landing with a nice roll out followed by the tail settling to the runway. The rest of the landings were not as picture perfect...there was some of that bounce I had mentioned. I need to figure out what I did on that first landing cause it was awesome. The gear and the doors worked flawlessly and add a lot of realism and scale appeal to the model. The covering was sagging in the sun so I need to get after those wrinkles before the nest trip out. We have a couple events over the next couple of weeks and I am hoping to showcase the Corsair at each.
ORIGINAL: John Taylor Dom, Scott did a great job. If i did not know better I'd say you did the work. Looking forward to seeing it fly. John T.
Yep....it looks a lot like one of my installs. This is the first time I have ever had anyone build something for me (I was out of time and ambition having spent all winter building the F-4 and Hawk) and Scott did an amazing job. He is only one of maybe 2-3 people I would trust to build for me. Thanks Scott!!

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
Thanks Guys. The servo arms are Futaba aluminum. When using a clevis like the Sullivan's that we used, you need to file off about 10 thousands or the clevis will not lock (arms are too thick). If you are just bolting on a 4-40 ball link, then they are fine as is. I lost a bran new Turbine Jet earlier this year due to a Dubro HD servo arm failing....now its all aluminum for me!!

Engine, ignition, ignition battery installation. No additional weight was needed to balance the model. Scott reports that the model balanced midway in the recommended range. I also have two 3000 mah batteries in the fuel tank compartment. Scott put everything as far forward as possible so we did not have to add dead weight.

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
Now a look at the mains. The gear has been painted white along with the wheels and wheel wells. The doors are operated by a pair of BVM air cylinders in each wing. The gear is actuated by a BVM High Flow air valve and the doors are operated via a separate air valve. Sequencing is handled by an RCBEE electronic sequencer. The have the delay set a 3 seconds from when the gear is retracted till the doors close. Same for extending the gear...the doors will open then three seconds later the gear drops. Scott has included Robart air line restricters and has the gear and doors operating at a very scale like speed.

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
The model features retractable landing gear with fully functional gear doors. Here is the tail wheel. The gear had been painted white along with the wheel well. Also note that the gear has been extended to improve it's appearance and functionality. Look at how the gear doors are actuated. Scott made up the linkages from 2-56 ball links and fashioned some brackets that he attached to the tail gear. Note that the tail wheel will just peak out of the doors when closed. This is close to how the real thing is. The tail wheel does not fully disappear into the well on real Corsair.

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
Next we get a look at the cockpit. It has the usually full cockpit that comes in the kit. I purchased two Aces Of Iron Pilots...one for my P-47 and one for the Corsair. This pilot is really not appropriate for the Corsair but Scott was able to dress it up complete with a MayWest! The attention to detail Scott put into painting this pilot is unreal! Look at that flying helmet...looks like real leather. The shading on the clothing looks sweet. Many small details like the headset cords and goggles have to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Scott created the "Glass" for the goggles with epoxy glue!

RE: Maj. Woody's Top Flight Giant Corsair ARF
The model will only go this season and maybe next with the Monokote and then I will strip it and glass it and give it a proper scale paint job complete with panel lines, rivets and weathering. I am actually in the middle of that process now with my Top Flight Giant P-47. Anyway, with that in mind, I did not want any exposed switches or accessories. Scott built a hatch in the fuse that holds my two receiver switches, Ignition switch, fuel dot and air fill valve. It is hinged with gear door hinges and stays closed with two magnets. Scott made the door from a fiberglass layup he did over the existing fuse. Just amazing craftsmanship on his part!!
