RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I have a Saito 450 radial in mine, yes it is quite the mess after a flight, but I would trade the mess anyday for that sound. It is definitely a showstopper. I radared my plane at a clear 100MPH on a high speed pass. That engine is a stump puller. My plane weighs all up 30lbs. and when I shove the throttle forward, the prop blast kicks up the tail and she is off like a jackrabbit with a 45 degree climbout. I have my eye on that Seidel/evolution radial in the same class for the next radial project, the 91" Japanese Zero that KMP is working on. Good stuff.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
If it were my engine, I would test the theory of inconsistent fuel flow. If the fuel pulls away from the carb in a opposite g-force scenario, the solution would be to install an external fuel pump to keep pressure to the carb in all flight maneuvers. Sometimes, some engines are pretty snicky when it comes to changing the way they are fed. Just sayin

Greetings, it has been a bit since anyone has posted about this P-40. I am going to maiden mine today, has anyone watching this thread flown theirs yet and what characteristics should I look out for? Pics will follow.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I also wish you luck on your maiden., The maiden flight is always the butterflies. I am facing tommorrow the maiden flight of the ESM P-40 Warhawk. I feel that power under the hood makes a lot of difference when it comes to flying these big birds. I have been flying my Corsair now for a year, and she never let's me down. I have the Saito 450 under the hood turning a 22" 3 bladed Solo prop. I showed pics earlier in this thread. I got to make a comparison lately with another make and model. The Ziroli Corsair with a 50cc engine in it. It also weighed 32 lbs. It was turning a 22x10 two bladed prop. The difference between the two birds was like night and day. This model had 1/2 the throws on the rudder and ailerons as did my Corsair, and when I took off, I couldn't turn it, as a matter of fact I held full right A and full right R to maintain level climbing flight as the power was insufficient to accelerate in a climbing attitude. It got better when the plane leveled off and speed increased, but it was the nightmare maiden with this Ziroli. When I got the plane leveled and trimmed, it took full throw on both controls to turn it. It is obvious that something wasn't right and the landing was not good. When the throttle was pulled back, the plane entered a stall like sink rate that the elevator could not hold, and I lost all lateral control. The landing wasn't good and the building is back to the drawing board with several modifications. My ESM, when I point it down the runway and hammer it, the throttle and right rudder is applied at once and the plane's prop blast kicks up the tail and I am off like a jackrabbit and it climbs out at a 45 degree angle. This plane is well behaved and predictable. The big difference is power, that 450 is a stump puller with about 6.5 HP turning that prop. I radared my plane at 95 miles per hr. in a slightly descending pass over the pitts. The 50cc power for 30 Plus weights in the plane will fly it of course, but, your flight p's and q's must be looked after a lot more closely. I prefer raw horsepower that makes the speed. The P-40 weighs much less and I hope the power ratio is to my likeing.

Ha ha, burning model aviation fuel has a pleasant smell associated with Andrenaline and mostly fun and challenge. My Saito 450 goes through almost a quart in a 10-15 minute flight, I can't keep my foot out of the throttle on this bird for some reason

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Well, if this is true then fuel will move to the front of the tank which it does not. The action of the thrust is pulling the tank from the fuel thereby shoving the fuel to the back of the tank. The same physics is being applied to the rest of the airframe, but because it is attached to the engine, it remains in position. The fuel, however, is not attached and is free to react to the thrust. The forces of gravity take effect when there are equal pressures around the aircraft. A flying plane under thrust forces in a dive exceeds gravitational pull. That is the best way I can explain it cause the clunk remains in the fuel most of the time in my experiences.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Engine quitting on a dive WHEN there is still fuel in the tank has never happened to me and I think this is why. Recall your Physics.. The speed of the mass of the aircraft in forward momentum I think is greater than the mass of the fuel. The only reason I think the fuel should flow to the front of the tank in a forward momentum is because you are putting on the brake and slowing down which also rarely happens in a dive. The propeller is continually applying thrust thereby pulling the airframe causing the fuel to remain in the back of the tank. Whenever I check the fuel level after the engines quits from starvation, I cannot remove any fuel from it. The best thing is to not run out of gas! Time your flight. Determine where your fuel expiration is. You can do this by flying full throttle say for 5 minutes. Land your plane and remove the fuel from the tank and determine approximately how much you had left. Time each flight until you have a full throttle flight envelope that does not exceed fuel expiration. Do allow for several landing passes and judge what is extra to spare. As for me, I will never run out of fuel again on these big birds, I installed a quart fuel tank and know by timer when it is time to land.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I did,, but for the reason to be able to fuel the tank and be able to drain the tank if needed. I have a dot fueler going to the 3rd position on the tank and for it to be effective, one must install a line and clunk like the feed line to the carb. I don't know why else you would need it otherwise. Adjusted the valves in my Saito 450 for the first time, wow, it made a large power difference. The engine no longer pulls down much in the loop and it definitely takes that 28 lb. airframe into vertical performance and does not slow down. Very nice and realistic. The large Corsair seems to set the ball for the other warbird pilots, They take to the air and try to form up, if they get to close, I throttle up and it just pulls away. A good match this engine combo if you want power and realistic sound of a radial engine.

RE: KMP T-28C
Well, if you look on their website, the T-28 video shows a perfect takeoff and landing.. what's more, the flight is impeccable. Once the plane is in the air, it handles great. I don't think there is a incidence problem, it is a trike gear with a heavy engine up front. The nosegear, (just guessing) contracts on takeoff in dealing with that weight changing the angle of attack to slightly negative. The plane flys great otherwise, the only reason I piped up was so the rest of you can be aware of this little quirp without experiencing it as a surprise. Both of the planes I seen were the earlier version as a one piece wing. One thing is for sure, it needs airspeed before liftoff. The successful flight I seen was great. The pilot even let me fly it. I kept waiting for the wings to get light, ran out of runway and so I pulled back hard and it jerked off the ground. Once I was aware, the next takeoff was uneventful because I knew the stab had to start flying to get it off.

RE: KMP T-28C
IF anyone is almost ready to maiden their plane, I have had the pleasure of observing two of these fly for the first time... They have a unique idiosyncracy. Even if the plane is level, it will not fly itself off of the runway, the pilot must rotate it. Also, the analysis of the flight suggests that if you are flying off of grass, the effect is worse than off of pavement. It seems that the nose dips a little while gaining speed on the runway causing a slight negative angle of attack. I attribute this to the additional drag on the nosegear. The pilot must use more elevator than expected to rotate the plane making it react quickly to the rotate and liftoff, the pilot must be ready for this and compensate or one might suffer the fate of the second maiden. He was going full out and yanked on the elevator in a slight panic (he was running out of runway) and caused the plane to rotate almost vertical thus losing his airspeed and subsequently crashed. The previous observation was the same only he recovered his plane and had a successful flight. Recommend using an experienced pilot on the first flight until you get used to this little quirp. The plane is too expensive to lose over a silly thing like this. Just FYI....

I have yet to do the gear doors and strut covers, I was most interested in trying to copy what you did on the strut covers and would you be kind enough to offer the length of the carbon fiber strut cover attachments you made? I think I would like to employ your design here if it is alright with you... Thanks

I would recommend you use a mild detergent and after you get it clean, spray the entire aircraft with a flat polyurathane clear that is water soluble. It seems the chemicals will compromise the paint if alchohol will do it.

[/quote] The Keleo exhaust is designed better than what Evo puts out. Remember, these engines are now made in India and for some reason the details get pushed aside or hurried up to get to market when it comes to the accessories. I even heard one of the designers advocates the Keleo exhaust over the stock anyday. You might want to rethink this.

RE: KMP T-28C
A friend of mine has this plane and he took a block about a half inch thick or so and carved out the shape of the tube sheath, went in through the wheel well and epoxied on the inside of rib three around the fiberglass tube and against rib 3. He cut the block in two so he could sandwich the sheath tube in between. Do this on both sides and even the stock tube can't possibly fail in flight.

I wanted to make sure the outer wing skin was contrubuting to the overall wing strength and it was easier to assemble. I can deal with a one piece wing that size. Sometimes I just don't trust the Chinese engineers.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Maybe I can help with this...I have installed a Saito 450 in my Corsair and I verified it had left thrust in the engine tube. What do you do but reengineer the firewall. I flushed up the firewall and started wrapping the mind around installation because with the mount the 450 had exactly the same problem. I elected to go to Kelvin at Keleo Creations for a scale exhaust. The picture and thread can be seen on an earlier page in this thread. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9758940/mpage_12/key_/tm.htm With the exhaust right up against the firewall and the exit tubes in the scale position, it wasn't any problem getting everything to fit. It was tight but the results were very desireable. As far as the muffler, I do custom pitts exhaust work as you would find on my website www.magnumrc.com. I believe I could make you a tighter fitting exhaust for your engine. You can call us or email if you like to explore the option. As far as that right and down thrust, it was interesting to discover,(cause I was worried about it) that it really didn't make any difference on that big airplane. I built only 1 degree right thrust and no down in the reconfig of the firewall and the plane flies great. That 450 has a lot of torque turning a 22" 3 bladed propeller, and it just rolls down the runway and I do not have to use any more rudder than any of my other warbirds in the takeoff. Just be a pilot.....

By the time one chooses to spend the money on a prop and engine like this, the pilot needs to be beyond nosing over on landings. I lucked out on the maiden considering it was a belly landing from a gear failure, it was genuinely a balancing act to not break anything.

Back in june when I ordered it, the retracts were air operated, but by the time I got it in December, they substituted electric retracts for the air. When I called them they said the air retracts were no longer available. My question is - has anyone out there used these electric retracts, and what do you think of them? My only obeservation with them is that they move extremely slow. Troy Built says they are working on a mod to increase the speed, but don't know when it will be available. Any opinions? Thank you Orion for clearing that up and I think Mr. Grumpy will be more than delighted he may even smile now.... This also means that a Lado retrofit, (what I do) will now fit this plane. It looks good, they REALLY opened it up from what they did before with the aluminum tube. I hope the wing is just as strong. I would be tempted to carbon fiber the spar thru there for additional insurance.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Hi Higharc, did you look carefully at Grumpys photos of the retrofit at D&L posted earlier? It is clear that the actuator sticks way out past the frame. Like I said before, I have the wing tube version of the plane and the air cylinder is inside the confines of the frame of the retract, the electric motor is not. The question still remains does the D&L retrofit fit inside the retract bay WITHOUT having to remove any spar material. This is an impossible scenario for the wing tube version in that the air cylinder butts right up against the ply framework that contains the aluminum wing spar and not a possiblilty that I can see for an electric actuator that sticks out will have any room.. If D&L made that statement, then I say have someone produce a photo with the wooden spar. It may fit but I doubt it because the statement their acutator fits inside the same space as the air cylinder in not correct as proven by Grumpy's photos.
