RE: Aircraft switch on while charging Rx Battery
My sincere thanks to you both for your guidance and suggestions (and reassurance that flipping the switch will not blow the Rx pack). I pulled the Rx pack out of the aircraft last night, put it on the slow charger, and went to bed. This morning the pack produced 2.7V. I just unwrapped the pack; two cells looking great at 1.4V, the other two cells dead. I'm glad now that I was not able to go flying 10 days ago and fortunate that the pack died on the bench and not in the air.

Aircraft switch on while charging Rx Battery
Long day and/or lost my mind...have not made it to the flying field for a good while, but thought tomorrow morning looked good. I hooked up a Futaba charger to my aircraft and was about to plug in the transmitter, but then had doubts that I had the right transmitter for that aircraft. So, I turned the transmitter on (it still had a fairly good charge as both the aircraft and transmitter had been fully charged 10 days ago) and then reached over and turned on the aircraft switch in order to toggle the sticks to ensure that the controls were correct (forgetting momentarily to unplug the charger from the aircraft). I turned the aircraft switch back off, unplugged the charger, and then turned the aircraft switch back on to test the controls. The receiver battery went completely dead. Plugged in a volt meter and read nothing at all. Will turning on the aircraft switch while the charger is plugged in instantly kill a NiCad battery pack? I then plugged the Rx battery into my field charger and the charger immediately began to blink. That is the indication that a battery has completed charging. Pulled the battery off the charger and plugged in the voltmeter...no charge at all.

RE: Bigger Fuel Tank For Herr Little Extra.
A square 4oz Sullivan will fit just fine. If I remember correctly, I had to trim the former a bit first. That Lil Extra has a pretty good size fusilage, for a little plane.

I used 5 HS-81's and a 500mAh battery in mine. Works great. I don't see any problem with using your 350mAh battery, though. I have a 270mAh battery in my Stinger 10 and it will run 4 flights on a charge without any problems.

RE: Coming to grips with one's vision
I had to get a physical a couple of months ago so I could be a victim at my youngest son's cub scout camp...they need to know if you can see and breath before they shoot your eye out with a BB gun and then choke you to death inside a collapsed tent. My doctor asked when I had last seen an optometrist or ophthalmologist (pretty sad...my uncle was an ophthalmologist and I had to google to get the spelling right...). Anyhow, I provided my doctor with the delaying tactic response of "What?". She said, "you heard me". I said....1993 ish? She said, "can you see where you are going?". I said, "...mostly...", so she wrote that on my cub scout form. She also wrote "healthy" on the form, but her handwriting was decoded incorrectly and I was accused of being diagnosed as "hostile" by the camp nurse. I have the short arm reading problem, but do reasonably well otherwise. This thread is a good, healthy reminder though. I do struggle with my small planes at times. Thanks for the nudge. I've got to tell you, though, my vision improves everytime I go to the flying field. It actually improves while driving there. No, I'm not BS'ing. Must be a mental "hate the job, but love airplanes" thing.

RE: Herr lil-extra & Magnum .15
After work flight ops...the wife looked out the window after supper and said, "you know, there's not much wind this evening." My ears shot up like a pair of Vulcan's finest. I knew that was the skipper's signal to clear the deck for flight ops. Thanks sweetie, I'm off! Drove out to the flying field with my altered Little Extra, ready for her maiden flight. No one there but me...5 mph crosswind...good to go. Fuel, prime, two flips and shes running...backwards. Grabbed the spinner and she pops into a correct rotation. We're off down the taxiway. She drives nice for a little, tight geared, tail dragger. Onto the runway, onto the gas, onto the rudder, and away she goes. A bunch of down elevator trim, some left aileron, and she's cruising good at half throttle. NICE ROLLS! Brought her in for a touch and go; all's well. Brought her around to land and, you guys were not kidding, she floats a bit (desipite my brick-building tendencies). I'm impressed with everything except my fuel line. Crappy stuff, started to split and crumble when I disconnected it from the carb to refuel. I didn't have much time before darkness, so I packed her up and came home. Amazing how one rewarding 5 minute flight can make a day.

RE: Herr lil-extra & Magnum .15
That Magnum .15 XLS is a super little engine. I was in love at the first flip of the prop. I sawed the nose off my Little Extra, mounted the engine sideways, and built a new cowl. A great bunch of antenna routing tips. Thanks. I thought about it for a while, then took the Little Extra to the operating room last night and performed a surgical bypass and stint procedure...routed the antenna up through the cockpit, back down the inside of the turtle deck, out of the fusilage and up to the top of the stab, with about 5-6" dangling. She range checks good now. Then, I cranked it up at 1030 pm on the back porch and entertained the neighbors. Tried to get out to the flying field twice today, but got bamboozled by the weather.

RE: OS 10LA - props
Agreed, an 8x4 is generally way too much for a .10 motor (on nitro fuel). Most of my .10 props are 7x4's. But, there are plenty of times when less pitch is a big help with these motors. If that OS will turn a 7x4 in the low 13,000 range on the ground and run strong in the air, it should work good on the Herr Extra. I'd still give that 8x3 a shot, though.[;)]

RE: OS 10LA - props
I'd give Combatpigg's guidance a shot. If the motor is getting hot in flight and not performing, lower pitch will likely help with both. In addition to trying a 7x3 and winding the motor up a bit, I'd highly recommend that you also try a MAS 8x3. Your OS .10 should turn virtually the same RPM with a MAS 8x3 or a 7x4, but the 8x3 makes a world of difference in thrust. I've always leaned towards more pitch, cause I want the aircraft to perform more scale-like...I have beat myself silly at times in the quest to "make it work with a .10". My approach fails frequently when it involves .10 engines and aircraft of the dimensions that we are discussing. Like CP has stated, more pitch in this case does not equate to more performance and speed. I wish I could get that through my own head. I'd look at the glow plug, too. Is there any chance that your OS is running a full length idle-bar plug? If so, I'd try a short plug or a regular plug without the idle bar. Drop the compression a bit and see if that helps. My experience with OS style .10 engines is that there is not much of a margin between too rich and lean with the needle, when transitioning from bench/runway to flight. If it will climb off the runway in a slightly rich setting (skipping between 2 and 4 stroke) and unload after take-off, then that's probably the best place to be. It's a heck of a tradeoff with .10's, cause sometimes we need nearly all the .10 can give to make a comfortable launch, and slobering down the runway doesn't help. One last thing, I'd go as LEAN as possible with the air bleed idle screw, and then reset the needle. My opinion on .10 size prop types from best to worst performance: APC, Zinger Wood, TF Wood, Master Airscrew. However, I nearly always use a Master Airscrew prop until I'm comfortable with the plane (and it's landing habits), cause they are tough and cheap.

RE: Warning about Quick Tech Hobby
Just wanted to state that I have encountered the same situation with regards to Quick Tech. Placed an order for engine parts on 1 June 08. Received nothing. Sent numerous inquiries; no response from Quick Tech. I stumbled onto this thread recently and realized my error in dealing with this knucklehead. Today I received my credit card bill. Quick Tech made a charge, through a front operation called "Allied Wallet" to my credit card on 12 June 08 for the amount of the order. I contacted "Allied Wallet" and am in the process of reversing the charges. Quick Tech is clearly a fraudulent business. I'd like to thank all of you who took the time to post your experiences with Quick Tech. Hopefully those efforts will prevent others within our fine community from encountering similar difficulties. I'd suggest this thread be posted with a sticky on the forum. Now, it is time to seek prosecution of the proprietor of Quick Tech.

RE: Herr lil-extra & Magnum .15
Hey Mr. Mugen, How did you run your antenna in that thing? I just finished assembling mine and I'm having a real struggle getting a comfortable range check on the radio. I've run the antenna down the fusilage, out the back, up to the top of the stab, with about 8" flapping in the breeze. I've rerouted and shifted the wiring around in the radio compartment several times. Right now it seems to be O.K. with the antenna extended, but I can't get more than about 30 feet from the aircraft with the antenna retracted before it goes Borg on me...not very comfortable with that. I even swapped in a different radio, but that did not help. It's something in the wiring, servos, or antenna, but I have not figured it out yet.

Forgot to add...my Stinger is about ready to fly again. It doesn't look much like a Stinger anymore. I mounted the mighty .10 on its side, the way I like 'em, and gave her a radial cowl...made out of a large One-a-Day vitamin jar. She's ugly alright, but the little JB Welded motor is tuned up and ready to roll. 13,100 static, 3800 idle, with an 8x3 MAS prop.

RE: Ailerons on stinger 10
Sorry to hear about the demise of your Stinger. At least you didn't fly it into the runway like some folks...[8|]. Mine was still kicking after impact. That 4-channel AM receiver was laying on the runway, peeled from its foam roll, still attached to the mangled fuselage a few feet from the impact crater, continuing to issue commands like the Borg queen...still had elevator control, flopping away on the runway.

RE: Ailerons on stinger 10
I was gonna jump in and provide some prop recommendations, but Mr. Combatpigg already covered it all just perfect. Same thoughts on a break-in prop. My .15's are old Magnums and they recommended an 8x4 for break-in. I never understood that either. I used 7x4's in the past and recently an 8x3 for break-in, and have used 8x4's, 7x5's and 7x6's for flying, depending upon whether I was looking for climb or speed. Concur on that MAS 8x3; that is the prop that made a .10 work OK on the Stinger. I flew it several times with a 7x4, but the 8x3 really made a difference. I would have run an 8x4 on the .15 if my Stinger still...well, you know. Actually, my compressed Stinger's wing is repaired except for a little covering work and the fusilage is now framed out to the firewall (new firewall). She may be ugly, but she'll fly again some day.
