RE: Fusca 40 conversion.
I decided to install in this plane the APM (ardu pilot mega), it will be usefull in the future, when I plan to setup a FPV gear. Basically this is a IMU unit that is conected between the servos and receiver, and you can program it im many ways, making your RC model a complete and operational DRONE (UAV), or it can simply provide OSD data to the video signal and help you with navigation and orientation. [image]http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/879/img4956u.jpg[/image] The original two little holes that made the path trough the firewall to the fuel lines in the original GLOW setup were connected together to make room for the electric wires. [image]http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/2789/img4957p.jpg[/image] This is the radio TX and RX. I forgot to mention that I'm also using a FrSky Rx/Tx due to it's awesome failsafe features. It will help a lot in the future FPV flights.

Fusca 40 conversion.
At first, I would ask my sincere apologies about my english. As a portuguese speaking Brazilian, I don't like reading poor written text and I'm sure my words in english are far from the best I could choose but I'll take this thread as a step further in my english trials. The Fusca 40 is one of those planes that deserve a special place in your memories, being always remebered as "my first and only trainer" or "the best trainer that I have ever flown". It's a 100% balsa classic built, designed by Asao Takeno who despite the name (Japanese Inmigrant) is a Brazilian old style RC model airplane designer. By the way, Fusca is the brazilian name for the volkswagen car named as Beetle in the USA. [image]http://www.icn.com.br/tasmod/new_fusca40_1.JPG[/image] I'm not sure about the release date, but the original design was made somewhere between 1980 and 1990, maybe in the end of the 70's. Several kit companies sold the basic kit to build the Fusca, and there was a load of ways to get plans of this plane, in 1992 the HobbyLink magazine published the original plans from Takeno, and Takeno himself also used to sell the plans. The kit also contained a detailed two sheet plan and it was possible to buy it as a part of the model. The plans spread in such a way that was easier to find models built from the plans than from a Kit. This model was never released in ARF or RTF variants. [image]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ggIQ70u637E/S-Gyj0suDTI/AAAAAAAAARY/847dzuVLxtw/s1600/plan_fusca40.JPG[/image] The flight characteristics are those you expect from a good trainer PLUS a decent sports flying behavior. Generally this model is very light built and for those who doesn't choose the conservative power to weight ratio and use a engine (or motor) a little on the overpowered side, it's possible to have a lot of fun flying this guy from weekend to weekend for a long time. The model I have I bought from a friend in 2002. At first his plane was covered by a orange/red Monokote scheme and by the time he decided to sell it, the covering was ruined by two or three years of bad habits on maintenance and after flight cleaning so he decided to strip everything out, dry the balsa, sand and re-cover with Oracover. I received the plane covered with a full white scheme, in order to apply "decoration" as I would like to. What happened next is that I joined highschool on a very demanding course, than I engaged, graduated, started to work, and had a daugther, what a combo huh? Now TEN years later I got back to hobby. I decided to convert it to electrics because this was why I got back to RC model flying. Nowadays I live on a apartment, with little space to maintain my fleet, and the flying fields are like 20 miles away from my home, so it was tempting to buy one of this little depron stick stile 4 channel electric and fly every time I could on the park next to my home. I learned "all" about electric setups and realized that the performance os electric fly is superb. Well, this "blablabla" is needless to say here, but that was why I choose to do the conversion. From now on, the process will be much more like a picture comented album than a text supported subject. The modification was really easy, and I believe every one in this hobby should be able to do such kind of re-design.

RE: RX battery for Escapade 60?
If the battery pack is in "brand new" condition, it can stand A LOT of flights, like 20-30 15min flights, which is "impossible" to do in a single day. But it is important to check if isn´t there any servo stalling, or being under stress all the time. This drains a lot of charge from the battery.

RE: Appropriate engine for a restored Piper Cub
In this situation, I would do my best to remove that dead weight set in the nose, by pushing everything as forward as I could. Move the servo tray, battery pack, fuel tank and even the receiver to the most forward place possible. Remember that moment is a magnitude that takes ARM and WEIGHT, so moving the heavier parts to the farthest spots is more effective. By this, I mean you should take at first, probably the battery pack (the heavyer unit) to the most forward point (most times, next to the firewall, aside of the fuel tank), maybe using an extension. Than the servo tray, this move may be painful, you might need to re-do or modify the pushrods, and so on. In my humble opinion, adding dead weight to any aircraft is heresy. It raises the weight (obviously), but also the dinamic moment. Heavy crafts tend to fly much more "on th engine" than "on the wings", because them need a lot of thrust to overcome the big drag generated by a "diving" wing, and this seems to be you case, when you tell you must be at almost full throttle, on a OS 46FX, installed on a 1,8m wingspam cub. Another simple but effective tip is to change the tailwheel. Saving 10g on the back may save 50g on the front and by doing this you just saved 60g total.

RE: How much do you pay to fly at your club?
Yeah, most airplanes are glow or gas, but there is no restriction (yet) to electric powered crafts. I see that we spend a lot of money in infra-structure that you guys in USA just don´t care about (or it looks like). Our club is equiped with a full operational kitchen, freezers and stuff, bathrooms (gentleman and ladyes), living room, TWO very long termac runways, ambient sound system for events or simply calling a buddy, security guard 24/7... It is important to remark that we fly all seasons, as we do not have weather problems. It seems to me that you guys have a much more purist/simple approach to the facilities needed. A decent runway and room to park your car, period. And to tell you the truth, I would be happy with this too.

RE: A question about ASP 52a and OS 46fx mufflers
ORIGINAL: ATVAlliance You know...I have an ASP 52 2s that doesnt run well on the low end/idle. And now that you bring this post up I may now know why. My other ASP engine runes and tunes just fine. The stock ASP muffler has a baffle inside which creates about an inch or more of the overall length of the muffler. The plane I installed it in would not allow me to keep the baffle in without much modification of the firewall (as the muffler would actually be inside the fuse and exit from its side). So, I just removed the baffle and it fit better by being at least an inch shorter. However, I have not been able to get a good tune on this engine either on the low end. So, now your post has me intriqued to say the least. I'll have to take the engine off and bench test it with and without the baffle to see the results. Doubt I'll do it any time soon as I have put this plane on the back burner for now...but just thought I would add this to the topic.
Removing the baffle substantially changes the backpressure (make it lower), and this is more noticeable in the idle tuning, because all the blablabla (fuel feeding in idle by pressurized fuel tank due to low venturi effect in this condition). The baffle may also have some fine tune effect related to the pressure waves trough the muffler, but I believe that, if ASP had tuned their mufflers, it was tuned for high revs. Thus, removing the baffle would not make difference in the idle due to the pressure waves bad tuning. I have a Magnum GP .15 engine that runs the stock muffler without the baffle, and I added a 5" silicon tube to "guide" the castor oil out of my plane AND try to keep the backpressure similar to the original...

RE: A question about ASP 52a and OS 46fx mufflers
I would not say you could HARM your engines, but definitely the performance, in many aspects, is affected. Basicaly, different RPM ranges sets up different muffler "lenght", thus, generally the muffler "lenght" is designed to work well on a RPM range. You might also be having problem with too low or too high backpressure generated in the muffle, which drastically changes the idle set up due to the fuel feed variation in this situation, where the venturi effect on the carb is quite weak. PS.: I assume you have already spent some time working on your idle needle valve after the muffler swap...

the hard about gassers is that, when "they want", they will risk your plane. Maybe I´m just a bored, but, think about how many big scale planes you have seen crashing , and , think about how many times it happened because of something related to the engine. It is all the time, interference, bad spark timing set, acel. failure, too much heat, vibration, etc...
