RE: DERIVATIVE, New 2X2
ORIGINAL: MTK Carbon veil application ensures a very stiff end product. Standard doping technique is used to cover the inside of the balsa skins. I use nitrate dope thinned 80%. I brush one coat on the bare balsa and let that dry for an hour or more. Then with the same dope I cover the inside surface with carbon veil. That's allowed to fully dry for a few hours before coming back with a second dope coat The amount of dope left in the skin is about 1-2 grams, just enough to fix the carbon to the skin and moderately seal the balsa. Total weight gain from the veil and dope is about 7.5-8 grams. Skin sealing is highly recommended..... less epoxy is used to install. This is a very light yet durable method to build foam wings. My wings last 1000's of flights
Matt, I'm curious about something.... when you line the inside of the skins with veil, it has a textured surface. How do you handle spreading the epoxy (used to glue skins to foam core) in a manner that is lightweight? I would imagine all of the nooks and crannys in the veil would hold more epoxy than normally sealed smooth balsa, where it's spread around in a thin layer with a trowel...

RE: DERIVATIVE, New 2X2
ORIGINAL: MTK
ORIGINAL: cmoulder A photo of it in situ would be nice. I can't quite picture it. From my very little experience with the ES pipe, it seems to me that the pipe tunnel separator/insulator doesn't require a very robust material as long as the airflow through the tunnel is adequate.
I'll take a couple snaps tonight and post. I think the foam will work out well for noise too. It's similar to 2mm depron without the paper, but sealed with the glass on the pipe side. Turns out this stuff is very resilient When completing my Aesthesis fuse, the pipe floor that was used (glassed balsa) weighed 3-4X as much (about 75 grams) as the glassed foam does (20 grams)
Uh, I'm having a brain freeze.... what is this 'fanfold' material you are using?

RE: Practicing F3A on AFPD
I'd like to see them develop this game for use on the new 3-d televisions now on the market.... IMHO, as much as I enjoy flying the sim, for me the challenge has been dealing with the lack of depth of field when flying pattern. for 3d or heli flying, they are sweet!

Thanks fellas... I took a look at it appears they are using 8oz glass on both side of these panels... I was actually looking for the nomex itself for a custom layup that's hopefully a bit lighter.... maybe I'm chasing windmills here?

RE: OS 1.60 for a 2x2
FWIW, I've an OS 160 that's available.... has a Boca SS rear bearing, the Perry pump and nipple installed on the backplate. Been bench run only 15 minutes max for break in purposes. It's probably not going to be used by myself as I've had to downsize my planes to 110 size max so if someone needs it, gimme a shout and we can work out a fair deal for both of us... Mark

RE: Recommended Firewall for Electric Outrunners
ORIGINAL: matt13 The firewall I mounted my AXI 5330 off on my Wind S Pro was made from 3mm plywood, which I laminated with two layers of carbon fibre on one side, and one layer on the other. Another modeller made the suggestion when I could not get my hands on some end grain balsa, it came out quite stiiff and not too heavy. The blind nuts were mounted on seperate dounuts rather than directly into the fire wall, I used carbon firbre tow in attaching it to the fueslarge for the fillet. 100 plus flights, and so far so good![;)]
Matt, with the cooling holes you currently have on the firewall, have you ever run into an over-temp situation with your motor?

RE: Recommended Firewall for Electric Outrunners
I'll try to get a photo of my attempt at a firewall for my build... It's a sandwich of carbon fiber and 3/16" end grain. I drilled several 3/4" holes in the thing to allow for cooling air from the nose over the motor and into the battery area, eventually out the bottom of the plane aft of where the TE of the wing is. I hope the holes don't weaken it too much [:o] great question, btw!

RE: Hindsight Build
ORIGINAL: randy10926 It looks like I will have lots of time to work on the Hindsight if the gov shutdown happens. Looking at the plans and parts kit it is going to be like building an Insight. The only differences are that the wood kit should be a lot easier to put together and the foam parts are a different shape. Keeping the fuse straight should be a lot easier. The rounded foam parts will probably be a little harder to skin. Now getting the foam parts will be interesting. I was going to try cutting them myself. I have not been able to find a good source of foam yet. The local hardware stores do not have large enough blocks. Any suggestions.
www.foambymail.com They have 1 pound density virgin foam for sale.... shipping charges are very reasonable too.

RE: Rx battery
ORIGINAL: jgg215 After losing two planes due to unexplained power failures(all components still functional at the crash site) I switched to using a dual Tech-Aero dual lipo system, similar to Arch. The weight of the dual power system using 350mah 2s lipos is only 100 grams and that includes two switchs. for an electric power system you can drop the second battery and connect to two cells of the main battery through the balance connector as the primary source. If you choose the regulator voltages appropriately, you will not have to charge the backup receiver battery, just check it every few flights. The dual switches allow you to confirm that each power path is functional prior to each flight. This  power setup is only 72 grams with full redundancy. I also had Ed put in JST connectors for the regulator battery connection. This eliminates any wire splicing(failure point) and will prevent you from ever plugging in a lipo directly to the receiver(Murphy issue). John
John, what about if my ESC has a BEC built in... can I plug one side of the rx battery setup into there vs. going through the balancing port? Actually, now that I think about it, your method does have one less failure point... always the risk of the esc getting zapped and losing bec capability... What brand 2S 350 lipo's you guys happy with?

Battery Balancer suggestions

Does it matter that much if it's a balancer that you charge through the unit vs. something that discharges the cells with higher voltage (like an Astro blinky)?

battery suggestions: 8S with A50-16L
Need some suggestions for 4s x 2 packs to power my 110 sized setup...Hacker A50-16L, 18-10 prop to start...the plane has a fatter fuse than say a Wind 110, if that matters.
