Without help, which usually comes from a club, a new modelers chance of failure is very high. Which also means thay will probably walk away from the hobby never to return.

RE: OUTLAW no more...
The effort to protect the rights of RC enthusiasts is an often overlooked but vitally important function of the AMA. I hear the phrase "the AMA has done nothing for me lately..." I believe that is a misguided attitude. I'm sure if an agency like the TSA sought to put restrictions on our hobby due to some percieved "threat," the AMA would be involved very quickly. Also if someone decides they would prefer not to be a member, that's their personal choice and I'm sure they have their reasons. We need to respect that...

RE: OUTLAW no more...
ORIGINAL: Campgems
ORIGINAL: carrellh
ORIGINAL: flaminheli So in order for the AMA insurance to cover something you do not have to be flying at an AMA sanctioned field.
Correct. You only have to abide by the safety code. It loosely describes a safe flying area but it does not say you have to fly at a specific location.
I think you need to look at the AMA insurance again. I think you are wrong about it covering you anywhere. Otherwise they wouldn't have instagated the Park Flyer membership, a big mistake in my view. I believe the basic AMA membership only applies to flying at Chartered fields. Am I wrong?? I know that at our field that the AMA insurance/membership is mandatory. If we allow non AMA memberst, full membership, not Park Flyers membership, to fly, we are violating or agreement with our landlord. Don
But does that pertain to the clubs agreement with the landlord or between the club and the AMA..? I'm thinking the owner of the property would require the club to carry insurance before anyone was allowed to fly there. In that case would the AMA insurance suffice..? I don't know the answer. I don't know what the AMA insurance policy actually states in regards to where you can fly. BUT, it does state that no one shall operate a model aircraft in a careless or reckless manner, which may allow the insurance company to weasel out of any payment if you're not flying at a chartered club field or event... Just food for thought.
ORIGINAL: flaminheli
ORIGINAL: LSF2298 The AMA doesn't tell you where to fly!
So in order for the AMA insurance to cover something you do not have to be flying at an AMA sanctioned field.
I "think" you'll still be covered... The safety code only refers to a "flying site" which is not really defined in the document. But really guys, an AMA membership is cheap. Five dollars a month to help protect you and your fellow hobbyists is a really good deal.

RE: OUTLAW no more...
I personally find the AMA dues fairly reasonable. I get insurance and my club gets guidance from a national organization with a fairly large membership. If we're all on the same page when it comes issues of safety, noise, etc... , the better off we'll be in the long run.

RE: why are kits so damn expensive?
At this point I'm just happy there are still kits out there being produced, but I'm afraid that won't be the case in the future. I can see kit building as a more "specialized" area of the R/C hobby. I have a suspicion that the "short kit" from the small kit cutting companies are going to pick up the slack for us kit builders in the future, and although I haven't purchased from one yet, I have heard the quality is very good. I don't really see kit building going away, but it will change. I remember when I got back into the hobby I was floored when I couldn't find a kit availabe for an Ugly Stick... [X(]

RE: What do you want to see at a LHS?
It drives me nuts when all the basic R/C hardware is behind the counter. You have to ask for help from the staff (Who, like previously mentioned, are all crowded around some kids buggy...), explain what it is you need (What it looks like, color of package, etc... since they don't know what a clevice or spinner is...), and then you get the stare as you ponder whether the item will work for you. A five minute visit ends up taking 20... Just my .02... [8D]
