RE: 150 meter rule.
How long is that runway? How wide is that runway? Looking at the vans in the parkinglot I'm guessing the runway is 30-40' wide? If so then I don't see how that red line is 525 feet away. Maybe 200-250.
ORIGINAL: MarkZ Hello: With all do respect to all, I wonder how Ed Kazmirski, Doc Brooke, Tom Brett, Jim Kirkland,Pappy Deboldt, Cliff Weirick, Doug Spreng, Joe Bridi, Jim Whitley, Ron Chidgey and 10s of others managed to be such good designers, builders and competition aerobatic pilots? Mind you they had engines that were not as powerful as those of today, radios of 4 or 5 channels with only trim functions, servos that were not that precise as those of today, used rubber bands to hold the wings on, used silk & dope finishes, etc.,etc. Maybe it is 'kind of like' target shooting, it is not the caliber, the amount of powder in the load but the man behind the trigger.
They didn't have them available, but if they did you can likely assume they'd use them.

RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
Wings and stabs are what fly through the air, the fuse is just along for the ride and to hold the wing and stab in the correct relationship to each other. The wing provides lift and the stab keeps the wing at the proper angle to climb , descend or fly level otherwise known as AOA (angle of attack) Your 6 and 6 is really zero-zero. I've had airplanes I've moved the wing and stab 3-4 degrees and the only change is how the fuse looks flying through the air, otherwise it flew exactly the same. BTW there is no airplane that flies at zero zero without some elev trim to keep the wing at a positive incidence. Tim

I'd think riding in the back of a pickup would pose far less danger to the airplane than at the field and the pilot flying it. Just sayin'................... Tim

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
Hi Tom, In the second half, as you pointed out, if the esc goes to "cut off" if the on-board battery goes dead this in itself is much safer than an IC powered plane. In the IC example the engine is taking the airplane directly to the crash site at possibly WOT. I'm of the mind to just leave it alone. I personally have mine set to go to cut off if either happens along with using the "Throttle Hold" switch to kill the power. Tim

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
I want to know just who is going to walk through the pits and enforce this rule? What is the penalty if we don't meet this silly rule? As written the only thing we'd need to do is tie the tail down while the model is sitting in the pits. Again a silly idea. I truly hope this idiocy gets voted down, at first I agreed is was a good idea, but after reading others opinion I believe this is a completely unnecessary rule. Maybe something like, "Pilot must demonstrate the eng/motor will instantly come to a zero RPM condition when the transmitter is turned off." Tim

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
ORIGINAL: TonyF I can't make heads or tails out of the survey results posted here. And I really can't understand or see this talk about ''What'' and ''How''. Something about that discussion is going right over my head I guess. It still looks to me that the NSRCA BOD decided that the majority of pattern fliers flying electric models are not responsible enough to operate them safely and they are dictating some process that I practically guarantee is not done at the majority of practice fields and will only cause difficulties if anyone attempts to enforce this Safety rule at an event. While I feel that the rest of the proposals are good, I really feel that this arming rule is going too far.
I thought it was just me, I agree Tony. Tim

RE: Lightning Build
First time I saw Jeff's new airplane at the field for the maiden flight I picked it up and I swear it didn't have any batteries in it. I don't think anyone can build as light as Jeff. His eye for detail and not accepting "Good enough" sets his airplanes apart from most anyone Else's. Tim

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
"Motor batteries shall not be connected until your told by the line director you're ready to fly and on the clock." This puts you on the same clock as the IC guys in the 3 minute rule. Any rule we come up with will never be 100% idiot proof. There will be accidents no matter what system we use. I've used the kill switch to disarm my for years now, even on my IC engines. Works well for me. Maybe adopt the rule used at Joe Nall, with engine running turn the transmitter off and the engine/motor must stop instantly. If it fails to do this you don't get to fly. So many ways to skin this cat. Tim

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
Thanks Scott, I know serving as an NSRCA rep is a thankless job. I applaud those that do. I hope your's and Don's post will allow more non-Nsrca members understand how they can vote in this poll. I wonder how the poll result would differ if one was placed here on RCU vs the one on NSRCA. I think most of the proposals will be fine, they're not what I wanted but they're close enough. These rules are only going to affect one contest a year anyway that most pattern fliers will never attend. I still believe that FAI-F3A shouldn't even be mentioned in the rule book as we have zero control over it yet we let it control us nearly 100%. Why we allow the FAI to dicate what we do in our pattern world is beyond me. Oh that's right, one contest for 3 guys every other year somewhere in the world. Tim

Thanks Don, I voted, then logged out of the site and the poll wasn't available any longer. As done I suspect you'll get only a few non-Nsrca members voting.

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
The arming plug outside the airplane is no more a point of failure than the same point of failure inside the airplane. The weight proposal doesn't go far enough. Just delete the weighing requirement. Advancement. As long as the word "Should" is in it the entire section is a moot point. Equipment, good proposal. I wonder why the NSRCA decided to place the voting on the NSRCA site limiting the voting only to NSRCA members. The poll is likely a useless endeavor anyway as the Dist reps are not bound to vote the wishes of their district anyway. Tim

RE: Pattern Rules Proposals
All this for one contest a year......... Good grief. It's this simple. Delete the requirement for weighing. All AMA Classes. Kick any mention of F3A-FAI out of the AMA rule book and out of the AMA pattern realm as we have zero control over it. It is NOT and never should have been even considered an AMA Class. If it is then it needs to be under our rules and a destination class. It isn't and never will be. Let FAI-F3A do what they want. Tim
