RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I tested the Gens Ace packs as well and they are not as good. The Tenergy nano series is the best pack for the money. I used a Cellpro PowerLab 8 v2 to do the discharge testing. I have a new r/c product coming to the 1/5 scale market soon that I had to find quality packs for to put in the product kit, and I went through a lot of lithium packs in the testing to find the Tenergy nano as best bang for the buck. I will say that at low discharge rates, the Gens Ace are actually just as good. But that is the killer. At high discharge rates, packs' capacities change from rated 5000mAH, down to 4500, 4000mAH etc. This makes the cheaper packs more allowable in things like airplanes. In r/c off-road, discharge rates can be quite high, due to constant motor acceleration and motors with lower internal resistance than airplane motors, also just more drastic operating conditions on the motor. So if you have two packs that are both 5000mAH, one rated for 25C, the other rated for 50C, when both are used in r/c off-road, the 25C pack may end up providing 3500mAH, while the 50C pack may end up providing 4800mAH of capacity. This is where the higher C rating pays off, even though they are both rated as 5000mAH packs that look and weigh the same.

If you guys go to buy lipo batteries, go to hobbyking and look at the new Tenergy nano series. I have tested many of them on a wattmeter. They are good. As good as batts 3 times the price I have tested.

Servo control voltages
I am curious to know how servos are actually controlled by their 3 wires. Can someone explain how the voltages are applied over each wire to produce the servo rotation amount and direction? For instance, does the servo sit at full voltage on the red and black wires, and then the amount of potential on the white wire determines where the horn sits at in its rotation range? I'm trying

RE: Rock Racers?
Yeah I'm definitely going to get into crawlers, or at least try the wraith. Something about that darn xr10 that makes me want it though. Its function just looks awesome and I think I could have some fun at my property without always needing speed. Probably going to be a little delay for a few weeks on kits though, because I just bought a $2200 50cc 12hp engine for my Baja 5t today. Vroom

I guess I don't need that speed I stated. What I really want is something I could drive with me while I go on a hike. There are ruts and rocks, nothing too extreme, but it would be neat to take out on some of the trails. So what I would want more than anything would be ability to crawl, and hold a large battery pack. Maybe like a 2S 6000mah pack I'm guessing. What do you guys think

Rock Racers?
So I was looking at the Axial Wraith "rock racer" they recently released, and the video sort of inspired me to want one. I had always looked at rock crawlers and thought that I would not have much fun with them, because I like the vehicle to be able to move decently fast when it hits the open ground. Since a lot of crawlers are geared for crawl speed, I don't think I would have a lot of fun with that. But what's up with these rock racers? Are they something different, like a crawler geared for higher speed? I go on hikes on my property where I walk over a lot of clay washout ruts, rocks, roots, and giant hills, with dirtbike trails everywhere around me. I think it would be amazing to have an R/C vehicle that could travel beside me, but still reach adequate speeds on open ground. Can this be done with other vehicles besides the Axial Wraith? Can something the XR10 be geared for higher speeds? And when I say "higher speeds", I only mean like 25-30MPH. Thanks

1000-Lumen Quad-Emitter Baja Headlight!
To drive a big, fast R/C truck at night, you have to be able to see a large area in front of the vehicle for the path to remain predictable. Small accent LEDs just don't work for this because they cannot focus and throw the light far out ahead, or mainly put out enough light in general. I decided not too long ago that I was going to fix that problem. I began looking at the Baja 5T front bumper and coming up with some ideas. It wasn't long before I had a headlight setup in mind that made me quite anxious to build. I knew that the headlight needed achieve a lot of light output. So I choose to use four CREE XR-E emitters (that's roughly 250 lumens x4). These are unlike standard little LED lights you would see somewhere like Radioshack. The XR-E puts out far more light and draws far higher current, while also being externally focused with a reflector assembly. My main problem that I was concerned with was getting the whole assembly to mount and look good like the factory plastic light cups. I was afraid that the reflector assembly I was going to need to use for the lights was going to cause me to have to mount a few of the lights outside the center bumper tube, just due to the clearance I had available. When I tested one of the light heads I had and found that I could squeeze all four of them right in the center of the bumper, I was quite relieved. What I did to build it: Used a solid delrin plastic rectangular bar as the base to hold the lights together. Machined the bar down to length, and machined the side angles of the bar to match the factory Baja bumper tube angle. End milled 4 holes through the bar. Tapped the holes through with threads so that the light heads could screw in. Soldered 14ga lead wire to all four light head driver boards. Screwed in light heads to plastic bar. O-rings used to seal out water. Filled cavity on the backside around lead wires with black silicone to completely seal and support the power wires. Connected all four lights to same power wires . Notes: Deans ultra plug will be used between light and battery. Powered by 1S 5000mah small LiPo pack to run lights for roughly 1.5+ hours. The 4 holes on the factory bumper for the light pods will be used to mount this light bar. It will be a strong attachment. This first light is a working prototype so you can see how the light looks. I am going to change a few things to clean up and improve the design. RE: Dumas Miss Unlimited outboard powered
That is awesome! Mine is a model of an Unlimited class inboard hydro that has been modified to somewhat represent a kneeler. Yours is obviously correct scale and really has the right dimensions. Looks fast just sitting there! What will you use for a motor(including lower unit)? Wouldn't it be great if someone sold fast scale model outboards(not the slow ones that sell for thousands of dollars on auction sites), or at least top cowls that made them look more like the real thing? I had one of the K&B .45 outboards, and I built a Dumas Sorcerer that I modified for the outboard. Ran great, and nobody else had one, but I always wanted a more realistic look for the motor.

RE: Dumas Miss Unlimited outboard powered
Exactly! After seeing all the vintage kneeler hydros at the outboard meets, I thought I would try to make it into one. Not many outboard powered 3 point hydro models out there. The aquacraft outboard was the one that looked the most like a real outboard. The gears seem to hold up well so far, and even though prop size is limited due to clearance with the ventilation plate on the motor, it worked out fine with an Octura Y534. Now I need to make my spare top cowl look like a 1958 Mercury Mark 75, and find a scale size driver for it.

Dumas Miss Unlimited outboard powered
Just finishing up a boat that I started building years ago. Started as a Dumas Miss Unlimited 36" hydro kit that was probably a 20 year old kit when I bought it! Looked like it had been on a shelf for a long time! After making a few other nitro boats I had decided that electric would be more suitable for my small pond, due to swimmers and canoes etc.. It was going to be electric inboard, then after I joined the Antique Outboard Motor Club I decided it would be an outboard. The afterplane was cut down to give a hull length of 32". I used an Aquacraft EP-1 outbaord with a Feigao brushless motor, a Swordfish 120 esc, and LiPo batteries. Initial testing shsows it will be faster than I thought. The boat weighs about 6lbs ready to run, so I wasn't sure this outbaord would push it well. It does. With 7.4v battery it gets 32mph(gps) and with the 11.1 it is much faster. I haven't done gps tests with the larger battery because I need to secure the gps better in case I flip it. No video yet, but here are a few photos.

RE: Dumas Miss Unlimited Build Progression
Interesting thread, as I have recently finished a Miss Unlimited that I started building about 16 years ago. Had it 90% done, then decided to get away from nitro boats, and then let it sit and went on to other models. I joined the Antique Outboard Motor Club a few years ago, and that inspired me to finish this boat as an electric outboard kneel down hydro. Used an Aquacraft EP-1 outboard modified with a Feigao brushless motor, a Swordfish 120 esc and LiPo batteries. The prop that is working the best so far is an Octura Y534. The afterplane was shortened to give the hull a 32" overall length. With a 7.4v pack I am getting 32mph(gps), and with an 11.1 it is alot faster. I am surprised it goes that fast because I built as per the plans and it is rather heavy at just under 6 lbs with battery! No video yet, but here are some still photos.

Send a 1:10 scale body of your choice to anyone who does laser prototype scanning. Have them scan the entire untrimmed body and get a file that can be output to Solidworks. Now have a shop cut a CNC foam duplicate of the file at 80% size. Coat the foam with an anti-stick material, and vacuum bag the foam with your choice of material to produce a custom body for the Rally. Make many of them and profit well as you sell the only line of Rally bodies. OK, so I expect no one to actually follow those instructions. But it was just an idea. [;)]

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Aloha, This is an easy problem to fix. A motor runs coolest at its highest RPM under no load. If it's too hot, you can either increase cooling with a heat sink or fan, or reduce load by gearing shorter; putting less teeth on the pinion. The slower a motor turns, the longer its electrical impulses last, the more torque it produces, and the hotter it gets.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Next I am going to be working with the motor mount plate. It will need to be machined differently for a 50 tooth pinion to clear the mount. The motor will need to be moved up and slightly to the car's left side. This photo is showing the clearance issue. [image]http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2129/gearmountsideview.jpg[/image] madpco, Thank you for your comments. [;)] There will be a lot of testing before this vehicle is pushed hard, and at this point I have not yet decided to use a roll cage or not. Protection could become very important later on, so we will see about that once the vehicle is up to speed.
ORIGINAL: gforce2448 I've had both the HR and RPM knuckles on my Mini-Revo. After the stock knuckles wore out and had too much slop I bought a set of the HR ones. What a waste of money in my opinion. In a matter of time the plastic inserts wear out and they have just as much slop as the stock knuckles. Also the aluminum nut caps strip out very easily. I replaced them with RPM knuckles and haven't had a problem. They still have no slop. The HR knuckles were thrown in the garbage. But hey? They might work better for street. Just giving my 2 cents. Thanks!
Ah, darn it. That is too bad to hear about them. I had taken a look over them and they seemed to look like a good design. I was probably pursuaded by HR's machining and anodizing, which looks very nice to me. I will have to try them out and see if I run into any problems. Like you say, on-road driving may provide a different outcome. I am going to attempt to keep this vehicle planted firmly on the road without bringing it on any rough surfaces, so I think they'll do alright. RPM parts are some of the most durable plastic for r/c vehicles. I used their blue arms on my race LST2 from my profile photos, and that truck took a pounding without those arms breaking. I had it catch a fence post at about 20mph head on which stopped the truck right then and there, and the arm that hit was completely fine. It is good plastic for sure.

Spektrum TX and RX compatability
I believe the answer to this question is going to be a "no", but I don't have a means of testing at this very moment to be sure. Will a 3 channel Spektrum TX communicate with a 7 channel Spektrum airplane RX? What I mean is, is it possible to use just some of the channels on a RX that has more channels than the transmitter? I have a 7 channel spare AR7000 receiver. I was basically wondering if I could put it in an on-road car to control it instead of needing to purchase another receiver.
