RE: Extreme Flight 88" Yak - Build and Fly
Wow Chris! Awesome to hear about your direction in exercise and health. And after a long hiatus, it's good to see the 88" Yak thread still going stong. (As if I ever had any doubt.) To my fellow RC and online friends, I'm sorry to have left without much word. As some of you know, I underwent a bone marrow transplant for leukemia 3 years ago. While successful, various issues popped up over the following months and couple years... the worst was my eyes/sight. 1.5 years ago my eyes began to get severely dry and little by little I became sensitive to bright light. Turns out my tear glands quit producing tears entirely... and the resulting damage to the corneas caused a lot of pain and terrible sensitivity to light. For the past 1.5 years I have jumped all the hoops with doctors to fins some remedy... and nothign has helped. Even with 2 pairsa pf sunglasses on, I can only veture outside for a short period of time and th ewindows all have dark drapes covering the sunlight. (No I wasn't bitten by some Vampire... lol but I have to keep away from the light about as much as they do). Even looking too long at the white computer screens and straining to see the letters is quite painful. The good news is that I will soon be traveling to Boston for a special scleral lens that traps a pool of tears between the eye and lens, as well as only touches the non-sensative white part of the eyeball. According to what I have gathered, this MAY alleviate any and all symptoms liek flupping a light switch. Instant relief and full function. Anywho... thought this was the quickest way to reach many of the old RC friends I have made over the past several years... thanks to those that have contac6ted me via PM, e-mail or smail mail... I'm sorry if I wasn't able to respond. TY for the kind concerns and look forward to becoming somewhat active again in RC. Now tell me again... the left stick does what? :)

RE: Extreme Flight 87" Yak 54 - Build & Fly
You don't need the CF dowels pins for the canopy front... you could just use appropriate sized hardwood dowel just fine. Same on tail hatch cover... just cut a balsa plate to fit, cover it with scraps from the wingslots, stab servo arm openings, etc... I think I may have an etxra control horn... were they the same size on ails/elevators? I think so... Wingbolts are standard 1/4-20 thread nylon bolts... You can pick 'em up most anywhere hobby shop or Lowes... hex head or slotted For the nice tabbed ones that comes with... Chris may some extra...

RE: Extreme Flight 88" Yak - Build and Fly
Spectre... If you go 4S... you will need a BEC to power the receiver as the Torque esc doesn't provide BEC for 4S (just 2S and 3S) Alternately you can use one of the newer ESC's with Switching BEC (Like a Hacker SB-40Pro) that does 4S and BEC... EF sells FlightPower EVO packs with their combos... (not on their site yet) and you can get the 4S 2500's from them direct and save shipping...

RE: Extreme Flight 88" Yak - Build and Fly
Guys... Horizon does offer a special unit that prevents the voltage from dropping too low... it's basically a capacitor I think... I just plugs into an open port 9or "Y" I suppose) It's always better to have a strong electrical system from the get go... but this should prevent the reset (not that any of htese were related to the reset) I am soon going to be doign some tests on the A123 packs which supposed lay out to 6.8 volts or so unregged... so they might be a great choice.... The prob with unregge'd receivers is the servos... some servos are VERY jiiter and unstable on 7.2+ volts (8 volts fresh charge) and though the 5955's can do it ... HiTec doe not recommend it... for whatever reason. The issue is the throttle servo as most grab up a "cheaper" servo and again most of them act odd on higher voltage... just a heads up... http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SPM1600 [image]http://www.horizonhobby.com/ProdInfo/SPM/250/SPM1600-250.jpg[/image]

RE: Extreme Flight 88" Yak - Build and Fly
Chip... what can I say but awe man... really sorry to hear it... I'm going to have to join the anti MPI guys... the new MPI regs are the "old" PowerFlite regs and are certainly better than the shrink wrapped type (same still used on the miracle switch) but they are still somewhat limited... especaillyw ith their single RC connector for power. (3-3.5amp before voltage drop) The switch is always a suspect too... which is why I won't use anything but a failsafe option where the mechanical switch only acts as a shunt... if it fails, it fails open and the reg remains on. I doubt seriously that with dual lipos on a battshare that you had power issues... but pass the reg or switch a distinct possibility. They may work perfectly fine now even... but a switch that didn't "click" all the way over could have vibrated back to off... or the reg dropped under draw... It's even possible that the battshare "contributed" to the issue by switching to the higher pack at the same time the draw was great... dunno... but it's new tech and may or not play well with other solutions. It's possible it contributed to a hard reset of the receiver... Again... MAJOR sorry for the loss...

RE: Ultra RC 87" Yak Build and Fly
I have pretty much strayed away from using metal screws and blindnuts anymore on cowls... even with the grommets... After fist drilling pilot holes with a GP dead center guage and using overlapping tabs... I cover the hole locations inthe cowl with CA hinge material... re-install the cowl and then re-drill for 8/32 nylon screws. I tap the wood tabs with a netal 8/32 screw... CA harden.... and then re-tap... I've never had a screw back out using this method.

Kochj... Those prop entender options are usually used by "long nosed" warbird guys who need to stick the prop out further from the cylinder head due to concealment... (especially planes with nacels) While these work pretty decent... they don't can create CG issues and are harder on the bearings in the engine.

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
Adam... There is another area of some do... some dont... It is done all the time... but Smart-Fly and Fromeco will tell you that two regulators connected to the same receiver will not "play" well together... somthing about the way they sense and distribute voltage... and that they need to be very clsoely matched... If you haven't purchased a regulator (a LOT of people DO insist that MPI regs may not be of adeqyate quality) I would urge you to look at the Smart-Fly and Fromeco failsafe regs... SPecifically if you want to run redundant 2600 packs... the SuperReg features a battery share device good quality regulator and a failsafe switch... http://www.smart-fly.com/Products/Regulator/3.htm Or the Wolverine switch which does the same thing: http://www.fromeco.org/awolverine.htm ALl good stuff for exactly whay you want to do...

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
T-Man It should be up in a week or less... still editing video... On the battery/amp issue... again it's all personal preference and I just want to make sure online resources ahve all the data out there so people can be comfortable wth what they will... With reg/battery/switches like the SuperReg/Wolverine offering redundancy and elimiating as many of the "risk points" it's not a bad idea to just be SURE you're there. It also includes 2 or 3 RC leads to supply power to teh receiver so you are increasing overall amp capacity. The Wolverine switch is only $18 more than a single MPI Miracle Switch and an extra 2600 battery is but $29 more... So for about $47 more and about 3.5 more weight... you have twice the capacity, failsafe switch, redundant batteries and peace of mind. Especially on this plane where it is phenominally powered with a DA50... those extra oz will never be felt.

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
BTW... I'm not purporting that anyone use any specific setup... just sharing pertinent data... it's pretty easy to stay within the specifications of the equipment we use... and just as easy to stray outside of them. The sky isn't falling... but information is a good thing... and allows people to make educated decisions. Just like many are using unregulated lion/lipo/A123 on the 5955 servos with great success... though HiTec states unequivocally this is not recommended. Just because something works... doesn't mean it's advisable... the RC industry has a tendency to"overrate" everything like HP on engines... the elctronics industry often "underrates" their products... I find it unusual for a battery pack "assembler" to be able to "re-rate" the packs that the manufacturer themselves rate lower. That opens the dorr to a great deal of personal liability. Actually I don't see them doing that... in looking at Fromeco's site they rate the Relion 5200mAh at 8 amps and the 2600 at 4 amps... Contrary to what you stated... Troybuilt states on their website that they use LG Chem cells... good quality cells... and rated the same as E-One cells. I also see that TBM states there is no warranty on thier Lion Batteries (Fromeco states about the same thing that they will be free from manufacturing defect)... probably a good idea if one recommends using them outside the manufacturers specifications. I see lots of awesome extrme sports moves... but I've also seen many 'nads crushed too... pushing the limits of technology/capability has it's risks and benefits. My $2000-$6,000 planes don't need to be pushing the envelope over $25 more investment and 3 extra oz...

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
According to E-One Moli's data sheets: Maximum Discharge 4.0 A Maximum Charge 2.4 A But hey... what do they know... they only make the batteries... http://www.molienergy.com/specs/ICR-18650.H.pdf I spoke with Quique at length about what transpired with the Python... Running 7 8711's and a single RC connector caused the REGULATED volatge to drop below 3.3 volts or some such causing a receiver reset. It appears the 8711's are asking for up to 3X the amperage as the 8611's. Just jiggling the sticks on the ground asked for up to 9 amps. Voltage drop was attributed to the limitations of the connectors. This was all verified by testing equipment and the Horizon Team. Very nice build thread T-Man on the FlyCirk site... BTW...

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
According to some others (Dick Hanson in particular) the A123's do not need regulators... as theyquickly dump off the overcharge and are running just under 7 volts... (I think that's the report) Then barely show a reduction in voltage until near the end of capacity The upsaide is the ability to charge these VERY quickly... like the new CellPro 4S that will charge at 4amp... you coudl charge a fully rained pack in about 20 minutes... while 10 minutes will be the norm for a 1/2 depleted pack... They can be charged at a MUCH higher rate... but unless you have a big dog charger to do 6-8 amp... this is PLENTY fine. Yarom... the one reason I do like the larger capacities (4800-5200 lion) is that you don't have to charge at the field... and the more you charge a pack the less life it has... (all about cycles) and the greater the risks of overcharging and other mis-maintenance issues. All the chemistries offer features and benefoits... as well as drawbacks and compromises... The real issue these days is amperage capacity... as it applies to connectivity to receivers, switches and these amp hungry servos. Hmmm.. back on an off topic... Glad to hear of your maiden flights... I banged the daylights out of mine without a hint of covering coming loose... and I did go over the seams pretty well prior to assembly... I think you've got a couple great planes to enjoy this summer....and beyond.

RE: Quique 86" Yak - Review Sneak Preview
The 2600 mah packs (actually 2550 mah capacity) are rated as follows: Capacity Nominal : 2600 mAh (by standard charge and discharge) Minimum : 2550 mAh Nominal Voltage : Average 3.7 V Max. Charge Current : 2600 mA Max. Discharge Current : 5200 mA (for continuous discharge) Weight : Approx. 46.5 g You'll see that the Max Discharge Current is 5.2 amp (approximately 2C) I've seen the discharge rate listed as high as 2.5c which would be 6.5 amp... A 2S pack (like the pack you mentioned) is good then for 6.5 amp continuous... The 2S2P pack (4 cell 5200 pack) is good for 13 amp... so maybe that's where the 15 is coming from. The reason Lipos might be a better choice for current delivery is that they are rated for higher current draw... 10, 12, 15 and 20c continuous... so a 2 cell 2100 pack rated for 15C allows for 31.5 amps of current... clearly sufficient. The Fromeco switches are nice BUT the battery sharing devices built in do not "parallel" the packs and thus do not increase the current capacity... just the storage capacity. In other words 2 2600 packs on a Wolverine will offer 5200 mah of capacity, but because it is only drawing from one battery at any one time it can only sustain the "C" rating of a single 2600 pack (6.5 amp max) While these packs WILL perform under higher current draw (many have done so) realize that you are "riding them hard and putting them up wet" meaning one of the most critical components of your electronic system is being abused pretty badly. Doing so is like running your car 2 quarts low on oil... yeah... the engine will run... but how long... The new A123 batteries are heavier, but allow for a HUGE current capacity (something like 70 amp I think) and I am going to do some testing on them inthe near future... some report that there is no need for regulators because they are a "little" lower in voltage than lions... sounds promising. But for now... I personally will not fly 50cc planes and up on a 2 cell, 2600 mah lion pack... it's just to minimal for the purpose and for $25/3 oz more I get the confidence of a more suitable pack with built in redundancy... (2s2p...lif one cell shorts/dies... you still ahve a "pair" runnign at 2600 mah) and you will find out the problem on next charge... This is just a statement of facts... again guys have used your setup without issue in the past... but were they using 5 5955's and such... I don't know... For me... mimnimum 4 cell lion (4600-5200), 2 cell lipoly or 5 cell quality nimh/nicad is a must...
