RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread
Thanks all for the info in this thread..........I await my Fox Black Hawk......will be Stumax E-power.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
bbfly I would not try to do away with the cheaterhole. Those of us who have flown Byrons converted to E-power know this does not work. Install your choice of power and if you must do any work on the airframe then pay attention to the rear stab and fin. Also get rid of the rats nest of pushrods....install your aeliron servos in the wing.....then go fly.

RE: MIG MASTER- Updated w/maiden photos
Pantherman how did you attach your canopy? Since I am building an E-powered F-8 I will need to open the canopy to install recharged lipos many times . I don't want to use screws as this take time and the screw holes tend to enlarge after awhile. I have some of the BVM canopy hooks which I guess would be the way to go but is time consuming in setting them up right. This is a nice plane and I have a build site for the Electric version if anyone is interested. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1106023#post13036269

I see the planes doesn't have front ducting......can ducting be done or can the louvers on top of the fueslage be opened for air. I am doing an E-powered version.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
Hey Ghost good to see you are still kicking.....[;)] I did a little damage to My F-86 and sort of set it up for awhile. Took a look at it today and figured it was time to get off my ruff and get it in the air again. I am thinking about installing one of the XPS outrunners if they ever get them out for us to buy. I have been using the XPS batteries and they seem to be holding up well....good prices too. I have a JD Enterprises F-8 Cursauder kit which should be delivered this week......the comapany built it for EDF rather than gas. I will be using the Stumax in it althought the plane was setup for the Byron fan. Since JD Enterprises builds the plane for the customer I had them change it for the Stumax....I'm looking forward to the build. JD Enterirsise also has a nice F-16 fuselage and canopy which will replace the Byron setup....nice too. Well take care and I will get with you later.

11lbs! Wow...my F-86 came out @ 13lbs. I was told most times the F-86 came in @ 13lbs with the fuel setup on a full tank. I am still waiting on my wheels....F-86 is ready to maiden. Nice clean setup you have Ghost.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
BVM has a light weight set they just came out with.... especially for electrics....About the same price as others....less than some. I talked to Don Smith there @ BVM about the llight weight set for the F-86. I needed a front wheel no more than 2-1/4" and the mains can be 3". The pic they show has a standard off the shelf front wheel(plastic) and I didn't care for it, so Don said he would put together an alloy wheel which will fit and match the mains. I think I will invest in the set along with brakes for the mains. This size wheel/tire combination is one which I use on many planes and if I need a different size to mix and match BVM will be in business for some time I am sure. With the weights we are seeing on large scale EDFs we will need good wheels and tires. Soft tires and weak wheels just will not cut it...least not on my plane as I well found out. I had inserted the stiffeners in the Robart tires but the side walls are too soft and @ speed the tires will seperate from the two wheel rims. Here is the site: http://www.bvmjets.com/Pages/V-Lite_Wheels.htm

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
Sorry you are still feeling ill. I just got over some type of crud myself. I don't catch crap like that very often and my wife says I am hell to live with if I must stay in bed for any length of time. Bummer!...as they used to say. No fun at all when you must tavel so far to fly. All this time I thought you had the whole outback in which to point your planes and fly. We are lucky here as we have very active clubs and 7 fields to fly in. I have a feeling we will lose some of them as the area builds up with housing.

Hey Ghost is your Esc coming by foot runner? If you guys keep procastinating you will force me to be the first to fly the Turbo.[:D] I need to quit building for awhile and break out my Sukohi for some flying so as to limber up my fingers on the Tx before I do the maiden on the Sabre. Besides my A-123 pack(in the Sukohi)needs to be used. I haven't flown anything except for a foamie in the past few months but the weather should warm up in a couple days(before it drops back to freezing again....global warming you know).

RE: Iron Bay Model Company
I never had a problem on orders from Iron Bay. I have e-mail John a few times reguarding the use of the Hacker Turbo electric motor which a few of us are testing in the Byron jets. Results so far have been excellent with high numbers for rpm and thrust far exceeding the fuel burning Byrons. Test seem to indicate thrust @ 16-17lbs which beats the 11lbs the fuel engined planes put out. We have four planes being converted as of now...three F-16s and one F-86. So far two planes have been runup one here in the U.S. and one in Australia and test flight will be ongoing in a few weeks. E-power can bring back the Byron jet fleet as well as the Miller planes. The results we are getting from the Hacker Turbo far exceeded our expections. Did I say that also we are getting those high numbers @ 64-65 amps. This means we could have a very good flying plane(which now sounds like a jet)and also have a long flight time.

RE: Banana hobbie's new f18
Good conversion for someone buying the kit version of this plane. Someone should give them a try. They could be mounted on a piece of plywood gorilla glued down in the foam. Would do away with three servos.....so a bulider would need only 4 servos for flight surfaces. For example the three Hitec hs65 servos needed would cost about $20 each including shipping.....so would not be that much more to purchase these gear. They look good.....if someone tries them and they work I will buy a pair. Right now I must fly with my LG down as I had one of my servos go out.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
Much easier than using a scale huh? I think Skyhawk told me about the formula. I had taken a hiateous from flying about the time the Byron , Miller and Cook planes were flying( had gotten into racing and sales of r/c cars at the time). I meant to ask you if you knew your rpm reading so you could check out the formula compared to your digital scale readings. Sure does make it easier to calibrate thrust in the Byron fans. I will be installing my retracts today as well as doing a couple odds and ends on the plane. I still need to hook up the pushrods to the flying surfaces . Won't be too long before the maiden.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
I had no idea the formular exsisted either as I was using a scale (which didn't work well). Someone told me about the formular on one of the threads. I guess the thrust was close enough in each plane to use the formular. Of course if the formular depended on rpm then it would not matter which power unit you used. At any rate I will use the formular once I figure I have the correct rpm. I'm not going to post any more results until I am sure they are right.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
I will need to do the run up again Ghost. It would be misleading if I posted any other numbers. First of all I am waiting on my Flightpower packs...should be in this week. I just do not have any good packs right now to do the test right. Second, I will paint the white strips and tach the motor that way as it is more accurate. I had read how you ran up your motor and maybe that is why your got better numbers....damned if I know as I have never did tests for thrust before. Once you know the rpm of the byron fan you can use the Byron formula to calculate the thrust and really don't need a scale. First you find out the rpm and then divide the rpm by 1,625...this will give you the thrust. Byron figured out this formula years ago. You may know this already but maybe others could use the info.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
Ghost, I ran up the motor to full speed for some length of time when I used the A-123s and the motor didn't get hot. If it were to run hot it should have done so then....but I will watch the JB Weld. I don't believe it will soften as this expoxy has been used on full sized car motors to replace threads in metal engine block. If this motor /fan works well maybe someone will come out with a new shroud to fit it. I have informed Iron Bay about the test maybe it will perk their interest. I still want to do the tach again but with different prop settting for the tach menu. I wish I had an auto tach but that would be hard to tach anyways as the motor is back in the fuselage ....guess I could beam it throught the wheel wells as I haven't installed the wheel well covers yet. I guess I was surprised @ the results from my tach test yesterday and want to be sure my numbers are close. I do believe they are because they fall in line with your 17 lbs. Ghost hope your health improves.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
I would like to tach the motor using an auto tach, but I don't know anyone who has one. I think the run up today was pretty damned close as it came within one pound of your run. As for fitting the Hacker to the shroud....took me about fifteen minutes to rout out the shroud using my Dremel tool....then mixed up some JB Weld epoxy and was done. 16 lbs is quite a big deal considering it is about a 30% gain in thrust. I am going to run the motor up again tomorrow using different setting on my tach and also check out teh Amps with my watt meter. I think the Amp draw will be low.

RE: Electric Byron F-16 Build
Ghost I just did the run up to tach the Turbo. I got 26,400 or about 16.24 lbs thrust @ 64 amps. I did the run up using 14s2p A-123s @ 50 volts. I believe I will get even closer to your 17lbs once I hook up my new 12s Flightpowers. Hell this plane would fly on 10s.

RE: Banana hobbie's new f18
My servos died in a very strange manner. The nose servo quit working along with one of the main servos after take off...only one main gear retracted. I went ahead and flew and pushed the retract swith and the one main gear came down and locked with the other two LG. When I landed the one good servo stripped its gears......so three servos out in one flight. This is not good....as much as Banana charges for this plane there should be good servos from the beginning. This is bad business as I only had maybe 8-9 flights on the plane. If I had it to do over I would want the plane/motor/esc setup. I would find my own servos and landing gear(air up-spring down).

RE: Banana hobbie's new f18
Well I spoke too soon.....lost three servos today....all the LG servos went out. One servo stripped gears and the other two just quit working....I replaced them with some JR servos and used a servo reverser on the mains. The best way to buy this plane..........just purchase the plane bare.......... The motor/controller seems to work o.k. It is a fun plane to fly and looks good too, but when you must replace new gear it makes people mad. Seems to me it would be better to put better servos and have less trouble...more customers.

So far my servos have done o.k. but this type of servo is easy to break for sure. BH doesn't answer his E-mails either. This will probably be the only plane I will own from that "business". Well I must get back to my large EDF build ....hope you guys have fun with this plane.
