RE: aerocommander
Nice to see some activity on this thread again! Hope to get my Shrike kit on the building board sooner or later. Mine will have K&B 61's with counter rotating props. I already have the engines. The counter roting version was a lucky find. I don't have the retracts yet. Now I forget which retracts are shown on the plan. I think the front is a Dubro mechanical and mains are air operated. Robart I guess.
Can you take close up shots of the ring and post them here or send me high res at my email. I like to make this ring for my model if it's all possible. I will post dia of the cowls intake here to see how much urs is smaller then mine would be. Thanks Sam
I would send you a scan of the radiator shutter patterns from the Sig plan sheet but I can't find my plans at the moment. They are buried around here somewhere. You could enlarge those patterns to fit your cowl. I will look again tomorrow but don't get your hopes up. Maybe wjf2 has the patterns handy?

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
ORIGINAL: wjf2 I still haven't finished the enlarged Yak 18P I started several years ago, but - I have completed the cowl air flow ring - inst. panel - and three piece canopy. I blew the Sig plans up by 20% to get about 85'' wing. The ring is laser cut from 1/32'' G10 Glass as is the inst. panel. The ring frame is laser cut from .008 G10 glass. The glass is far stiffer than the plastic and holds up well. Have a great day.
Looking great! You are building an impressive model. The radiator shutter made from glass sounds good and strong. I might have to make mine that way. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more progress on your giant scale YAK 18.

RE: YAK 18 P or PM
Nice to see some new posts on this thread. They are called "Radiator Shutters" in the Sig instruction book. You will probably have to scratch build them or possibly adapt them from a currently available kit of a different airplane. The Sig version is simply made from sheet plastic and screwed to a plate behind the cowl. If possible please post pictures of your project. [:D]

Looks like fun carving the top pieces. These old Sig kits reqiure a little more cutting, fitting and sanding and don't have very many preshaped parts. Sig called them a Craftsman's kit. I like your homemade sanding block.

Bummer about the skid steer loader engine. Good luck with the rebuild. I had the same problem with some replacement batteries in my Sony Cyber-shot. Then I bought some Sony CycleEnergy batteries which hold a charge forever.

Awesome! Good to hear she flies great. The Super Chipmunk was a spectacular air show performer. The words with capital letters in my previous reply are song titles from The Who. The younger crowd probably didn't catch that.

Very impressive for someone that just learned to fly last April! I like your fuselage jig for painting. That's much better than hanging the fuse on a coat hanger. The Ultacoat sounds like good stuff. I'll have to try some on a future build. I've always used Monokote.

Here is the Phaeton instructions on pdf file. That's how someone sent them to me. They were missing from a kit I bought. I built a Phaeton back in the mid 80's I guess. I loved that plane. It flew great with a K&B 40 and floated in for landings.

RE: Sun Ray biplane
My Sun Ray should be tearing up the sky by now however I went on a hiatus from building. I've just been too busy with all kinds of other stuff but I'll get back to the Sun Ray soon as possible. It wont be much longer. MFK ask about saving weight other than making a lightweight lower spar. You could save some more weight by using contest balsa. That stuff is super light but cost more. Maybe cut out some circular lightening holes in the fuselage sides, stabilizer and fin etc. Anybody else begin building a Sun Ray biplane?

Cool story. I put Garfield in one of my aiplanes. He crashed. GI Joe was my best pilot but he eventually crashed. I'm still looking for a test pilot that doesn't crash my planes. Haha. The Hiperbipe is a neat biplane. I have the plans too. It's high on my list of must build airplanes. You should build a Sun Ray first and then the Hiperbipe. [:D]

RE: Need help with identification
Phil, I don't think you have a Hawk 460 fuselage. It certainly resembles the Hawk 460 but yours is bigger. Plus yours has wing fairings and the vertical fin is shaped different. The Hawk 460 is only 32" long and is for a .19 to .40 engine. Yours is 48" long which would use a 60 size engine. Mike
