RE: Want to rant
I don't have anything against different rc brands at all. Actually i like there being a big variety, gives you the chance once in a while to be somewhat different anyway. That said, you pretty much do get what you pay for most of the time. The problem with forums like this is you get a bunch of little kids on here who want to talk up their cars and talk down others,

9.5 pro all the way [:D] I race mine, though there isn't much competition in my area. Most of the drivers and wannabe racers on this forum wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference between an Ultra MBX and a 777 on the track. All about the finger skills.
ORIGINAL: RustlerJunkie
ORIGINAL: sl4ppinb4ss3r why would he regret it? the evader probably has more parts then anything else.... most of the people here have evaders lol..but i may be wrong im an onroad guy
He would regret it because the Evader is not very tuff. If hes gonna bash then he should buy a Rustler, cheap and takes loads of abuse (Loads more than the Evader). If he plans to race, then the Evader might be a better choice, though I would still not advise him to buy it because it's "crap". My brother bought the graphite version and on the first week he had already broken more parts on his vader than I have on my Rustler on 3 years. Because you say u want to go BL, then I think u are not gonna race, so go with the Rusty :), just buy an ally idle and ur set to go. Dan
Yes, do what he says! RE: Anyone here ever hand wound a motor?
You guys can also experiment with using different gages of wire. A lot of thin wire, a few turns of thick wire, lots of variables to play with here. To get a halfway decent understanding on how to build your own motors, find some threads online of people building cd-rom motors for their airplanes. The advantage to building your own is being able to taylor fit the motor to your needs, kind of like we do with gearing. Look at some of the double stator motors (and triples) to get a closer idea of how to rewind a car motor. The design between the cd-rom motors and car motors have some biiiiig differences (2 pole car, to 3 pole brushless airplane) but you can get some ideas of what different gage wires will do for you.

RE: L4 oval
Actually in many places, oval is where all the good racing is. Most of the time when i'm running on my local track, i'm just running by myself, not realy racing against anyone. In oval, you're neck and neck with someone most of the time, and that leads to some real fun and exciting all out racing.

If you have a super fried comm that is just absolutely gunked up, them maybe using a file to scrape through the carbon build up might possibly give you more power, but it still isn't truing the comm or doing anything other than getting some of the dirt off. You'll just put grooves in your comm or otherwise cut its life time by a factor of 10. Use a lathe guys.

RE: GP3300 Battery Question for VETS ie:speedmunkey
Speed can i eq my nimh cells to 0 volts? A guy at my track uses a 30amp discharger tray that takes each cell down to 0 volts, then he dead shorts them with a piece of solder (just in case there is any charge left, the solder will melt). The ONE time i equalized my cells, i did it on a trinity cell that took each cell down to .9 volts, and that was only with one of my packs, made a huge difference. That was almost a year ago [:-] think its time to do it again. Just want to make sure if i use a tray that takes them down to zero, they won't be toast.

RE: LRP Sphere & NEO ONE awesome!
Last sunday at the races there weren't enough electric trucks to make a class, so i ran with the 1/8th buggies (my choice). Still lapped the field with my T4. Oh yea, thats with a stock motor. Ok ok ok so i'm by far the best (most consistent) driver that races at my track, but still... I run all brushless and lipo set-ups in my electric airplanes and have really gotten addicted to their performance, would love a good set-up for my T4. I made a 4wd stampede-ish creation at my LHS and its powered by twin brushless motors with lipo's. Used e-flight park 400 inrunners, 3600kv i think, with thunderpower 2s2p 2100's. Pretty decent performance, lot of fun to drive it, can't remember the runtime but it was pretty long. I think you could easily run some of those smaller airplane motors on a car or truck if you set it up right. I'm pretty sure we used HPI micro gears on the motors since their spindles were an odd size, regular pinions won't work. I'm toying with the idea of setting one up in my T4. The huge advantage to running something like this as opposed to the car only brushless systems is you can really up the voltage. High voltage = less current draw. Keeps things cool and allows you to run less expensive lipo batteries (you don't need a huge pack to handle the amp draw). Down side is that in order to deal with the high voltage, you need to be able to gear down the crap out of your drive train to allow the motor to be spinning 35-40k rpms. Still, with a little creativity i don't think this would be much of an issue with some of you guys.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
ORIGINAL: tf2psycho i have over 100 flights with the yak and never broke the gearbox or prop you sound like you need more practice or a firebird 2 lol [>:]
Thanks for the good laugh [:)] Its not as if i nose dive my landings. In grass it almost always noses over, and even fairly gentle nose-overs bend the shaft for me. Lately i've tried comming in a little hot and forcing a roll-out and it actually has been working for me. Also switched over to an out-runner set-up. Park400 920kv with an e-flight 10x4.7, TP1320 3s. Vertical isn't half of what it is on the gearbox but all of my components are staying cooler, and its oh so silent under power. Plane seems to fly a little better now, maybe the small weight loss of removing the gearbox combined with less torque on a smaller prop did it.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
I've broken a gearbox everytime i've flown my plane (a whole two and a half times) and it has nothing to do with gear mesh. I bring it in for a slow 3-point landing in grass and all i ever get is a nose over, no biggy, but no matter how gentle it goes over, everytime the prop hits the ground the gearbox shaft gets bent. And no the prop isn't turning, heck the plane doesn't even have to have forward motion. Never mind the chunks of foam that come off this thing everytime it "flies", it would at least be nice to have the hardware intact. I can't really regret buying this plane, because it was pretty much free for me, but i'm sure glad i didn't pay for it. Its still fun to fly, but its just totally not what i expected. I'm hopeing this new foam craze blows over and balsa comes back into the small electric equation, and planes start flying on the wing again.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Ok cool, wasn't sure how to use it or what everything meant :) Looks like a smaller prop is in order, wish i had a 12x4.7, but the 3.8 is gonna go on there anyway. Flew it last night on the same set-up as before, with cooling holes added. Flight probably didn't last quite as long as the last one, with only a couple full power climbouts. Battery was barely warm, i think i temped it in the high 80's (it was 83 when i took off). Esc was in the low 90's. Motor was barabley hot, i temped it at 120. And the gearbox still rotated freely after landing! yay. Won't say if my holes are the cause of this success, or the short duration tamer flight. Anyway, i'll let you know what the 12x3.8 yiels, hopefully tonight. P.S., i'm using the celectra charger, and dont' like using car batteries so i made a 12v power supply using an old computer supply i had lying around. Was kind of fun to mess with it, and really easy to do! Been working great! I get a solid 11.75 volts out of it, its rated at 10amps but i don't have a meter to find out exactly what i can draw from it. Charges my TP1320 great at 1 amp, thats all i really care about [:)]

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Good advice guys... if anyone's curious, i used my LHS's watt meter on my gearbox set-up and the 12x6 looked like it was pulling 15 or 16 amps. Thing is, it instantly started slowly dropping. I think it went down to around 12 or 13 (still WOT) but it looked like it was still dropping, and this was after 10 seconds or so. Not sure if this is normal, or if i'm just not using the thing correctly. Possibly the battery (TP1320) is just getting worn out because my boss at the LHS likes to have "projects" that usually result in things getting severely abused :) Should be another nice flying night, i'll charge up the battery and try the 12x6 set-up again, this time with cooling holes to see if i can keep temps down enough to prevent the gearbox from binding. Might also try the 12x3.8 prop if the bugs don't drive me mad. Tempting to put the outrunner on there too with a 10x3.8. With the included prop adapter, which props are you guys using? And are you using a reamer or drill or what to get the hole to fit the adapter? Be a pain in the rear to have to order the apc props.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
I set the yak up that i built for my LHS as a demo with the 400 outrunner, nice and quiet. However i think the gearbox has just a tad more thrust. I just don't like how i would have to drill my props out to work with the outrunner. (My LHS stocks e-flight and gws props). I think the apc props are a good fit on the outrunners, right? For now i'll just stick with the gearbox and see if i can make it run cooler somehow. I wouldn't care about the heat so much if it didn't cause the gearbox to bind. As the motor heats up and warms up the plastic around it, the gear mesh gets thrown off and makes it harder to turn the prop. In flight this must make the motor even warmer, causing the mesh to get even tighter yet... like a never ending cycle. Not sure how to overcome this? Anyway, i'll keep messin around and see if i find something that works :) What props are you guys using on the 400 outrunner? The 11x4.7 the manual suggested seemed to heat things up a bit more (esc and battery). I was thinking about trying either a 10x4.7 or 11x3.8.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
I didn't time my flight or anything, but i think mostly i was just putting around at 1/3 or 1/2 throttle. A handfull of short attempts at hovering/harriers, and maybe half a dozen near full power/full power climbouts up maybe twice as tall as the trees. I don't think i was being excessive, i was just having fun, and i want my set-up to be able to handle what i'm doing now. I will try adding some more cooling vents, looking at it now i don't think there is any openings in front of the motor with the gearbox on, hopefully it will be as simple as that :) Thanks for the suggestions guys.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Flew the yak at home for the first time today. I'm lucky enough to have several pastures around my house since we have horses. Downside is the bugs are voratious and drove me inside this evening, nice and calm too! Plane is still fun to fly, i guess its just "battlescarred." I'm flying with the gearbox and the park370 motor, and i'm having some heat problems. Battery is slightly warm, same with esc, no problems there, but the motor is hot! Like, instant burn your fingers hot. I read in the e-flight manual from the motor that it can get up to 220 degrees, and yeah that'll burn your fingers quick, but what the heck, i thought these things were supposed to stay cool? I race r/c cars and my brushed motors (putting out loads more current) only get warm to the touch. I think the problem is the gearbox. Before i flew, it freely rotated on the ground, but after i landed it was only a fraction as free as it was before.not sure whats going on? Gear mesh still seems ok, i set it up with a slight amount of play between pinion and spur. Any ideas? Shaft isn't bent, its brand new because my crash tk'd my first one. I would'nt mind pulling it out and looking at it more but it is SUCH a pain in the rear to get the screws back in, i have a heck of a time getting it lined up. I have a park 400 920kv outrunner too that i might just in for the ease of installation... though that would require drilling all my props. With the gearbox i'm running the stock 12x6, and also have a 12x3.8 for kicks, but haven't tried it yet. I'd say it was over propped, but the gearbox seems to be the problem, not the prop.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
That it does :) Oh well. The fuse was really warped right out of the box too, off by a good inch and a half deflection to the left, and also slightly twisted. This made loops interesting to say the least. A loop usually resulted in a snapout at 90 degrees to the initial heading, kind of entertaining really.... hah hah. I'll keep flying this thing and enjoy it while it lasts, its fun having a plane with this kind of vertical performance. I think my next plane will be one of those balsa 3d buddies, they seem like they'd be a bit tougher in the hanger-rash department.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Had my maiden flight today... lasted all of 5 seconds. I'm going to be kicking myself for a while over this one... yeah totally neglected to check aileron deflection directions before my first flight [&o] Ended going straight in from about 15 feet up, made a really nice crunch sound. Went over to it to see the nose shattered and the motor esc, and battery scattered around the chunks of foam. Picked up every last piece i think. Brought it back into my LHS (i was working today) and glued it back together. I was pissed at myself and i just couldn't look at my brand new plane the same way, so i decided to go fly it again. Flew good i guess, not enough elevator or rudder. Before the crash my auw was 15oz with TP1320. After the crash i probably added another half ounce at least. It flies, but i just don't like it anymore all banged up like it is [:o]

Sounds good psycho... just not used to looking at the higher pitch props, all the out runner set-ups are using 3.8's and 4.7's, ect. I just thought the lower pitch would help me slow down and have more slow thrust. Who knows lol! Sounds like i'll be trying the 11x8 though, maybe an 11x6 just for kicks also.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Bodyworks it sounds like you're pretty heavy and alot of that is because of your servos. The hs80 you have an aileron's is probably ok if you were going to go dual anyway, but the two hs56's on rudder and elevator are adding a bit more weight that you don't really need. Also, from what i've been reading on forums lots of people's are comming out at your weight or around there, and most still like the performance. Maybe because of your altitude even that little extra weight is hampering your performance.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Got my yak and started building it today. So far i have hs55 servos on rudder and elevator, hs56 on aileron. I decided to try out the gearbox set-up so i picked up the 370 4100kv inrunner motor. I will try it with the included 12x6 prop first but i also got a 12x3.8 just for kicks, dunno if it will work ok or not. Will be running a TP1320 as soon as my LHS gets some more in, also will probably use the E-flight 20amp esc because thats what my LHS carries as well. If they had them i'd try the CC25. I'll probably get the celestra lipo charger even though its dc only :( Hmm what else... Ah yes... i have a hitec feather receiver, negative shift, with single conversion channel 30 crystals, also have a channel 30 crystel for the trans. I tried using it with my hitec focus 4 that usually runs on channel 30, (wouldn't you know?!) Trouble is when i plugged it all in and put a servo in the try it out, the transmitter did nothing and the servo just flipped out when i touched the antenna. If anyone has any ideas please let me know because i was hoping this feather receiver would work so i don't have to use my micro555 receiver that weighs almost 3 times as much :) I'm not sure if the single conversion has anything to do with it... Edit* As i was typing this i had a revelation, my original trans crystal is channel 30, so why switch the crystals with the new one?!? Haha so i plugged everything in again, using my original trans crystal, and everything worked great! Yay. Now i have to figure out if the 1000 foot range is going to mess with me at all....

Like he said, $275-$300 is more what you should be expecting to pay. Also, just because the plane can hover, doesn't mean you can [;)] Ok well hovering may not be hard, but doing it good is hard, and doing it in the confines of a house is really hard.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
A couple questions for setting up my own yak when i get it... Should i go with the e-flight park 400 outrunner, or try Esskay 400xt outrunner since its only $30 bucks? And for speed controls my choices are the e-flight 20amp or the phoenix 10amp. The phoenix is just so much smaller its tempting to use it, but when i flew the yak at the LHS with the park400 and 20amp esc, the esc was getting pretty darn warm which makes me think the phoenix won't be near enough. I do think using that 11x4.7 was overpropping it, even though it was the recommended set-up.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Completed the yak at the store today. It looked calm so i took it out for a spin. I haven't weighed it yet, i'll have to do that next time i see it. Flew good, faster than the tensor (obviously) and actually "flies", i love it. Need more throw on the elevator, especially UP, will have to adjust that next time i see it also. As soon as i was in the air the wind picked up and it was pretty squirly, especially for a new plane, i had my hands full for a minute or so then i got it under control :) After a few minutes of fairly tame flight, mostly 1/3 to 1/2 throttle with a few full power burnouts into the wild blue, i decided i was pushing my luck with the wind and i landed it. Motor was slightly warm, esc was borderline hot, lipo was slightly warm. Something isn't right. I'm using the exact recommended set-up in the manual too, i'm going to try it again with a 10x4.7 prop next and see if that helps things. Any suggestions? I'm new to the electric brushless/lipo power systems. Park 400 920kv E-flight 20amp esc TP 1320 lipo E-flight 11x4.7 prop

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
Thanks Tman i'll keep an eye on things the first couple flights. On the tensor i think i we were running a phoenix 10 or 20 (if they even make a 20) and one of the out runner motors... maybe it was the 370 i'll double check today. With a 2 cell TP lipo i was able to fly it with an 11x5 wood prop and nothing got warm. It has a 10x4.7 on it now and i really like the way it flies better with the smaller prop. Couldn't tell a big performance difference, but i like the way it slows down a little more when you throttle back.

RE: Horizon Hobby Yak 54F, anyone fly yet?
lol good story about the lipos, don't think i would be that brave... now if the stick was long enough.... heck i'd just shoot it [:D] I'm going to be getting a yak soon. Doing work at the LHS putting together the entire e-flight line-up and setting them up for flight. I've finished the ultimate and the tensor and i've flown both of them just to "test" them, you know :) The tensor is a blast to fly but its just so... fake. I don't like that it flies no matter what orientation it has to the ground, it just gets pulled around by the prop. I'm hoping the yak flies a little more traditionally. I haven't completed one for my LHS, just started it yesterday. It will be running a park 400 outrunner 920kv with an 11x4.7 prop, TP1320 lipo, e-flight 20 amp esc, and 3 HS-55's with a JR receiver. Should fly pretty good. When i get one for myself i was thinking about this set-up: park 400 920kv apc 11x4.7 TP1320 e-flight 20 amp 2 HS-55's and 1 HS-81 on aileron's (i've got 6 lying around, might as well use one and save some money on the 55's) hitec micro 555 receiver. Any thoughts on this set-up?

RE: ELECTRIC TRUCK
I'd pick up a T4. Like Ed, i enjoy running both my GT and my T4. Depends on what mood i'm in :) I race them both on race nights. Couple weeks ago i busted a tierod on my GT and didn't have spares, so i ran my T4 in the gas st class. I asked the other racers if it was ok first, and they all thought i was stupid and that it was gonna be really slow, jee sounds like a bunch of people on this forum [8|] Running a p2k2 stock motor geared 87/16 i easily lapped the field several times in a 4 minute heat. My electric motor never gets hot to the touch, i've never temped it at more than 118 degrees. Its all about proper gearing, if you guys are burning up motors, DROP SOME TEETH! i feel like saying "duh". I slap some masher 2k's on once in a while and slap on a 12 tooth pinion and have fun running over rocks and stuff around the house. I love my t4.
