RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
I clicked onto Tower about a half hour ago looking for maybe a new arf and found the new Shoestring. I start breathing heavy and drooling!! "IT'S BACK"!! Then I see it's a 40 size plane :-( I lost my 60 size to a mid-air a few years ago and have been waiting a long time for the same plane. Sadly for me this is not it. Don't have anything against 40 size planes but I really wish Tower had come back with th 60. Woe is me!!!!

I know for all practical purposes this thread is dead but I lost my Shoestring about a couple of years ago due to a midair. Hey, some times it just happens. I still miss that plane!! Wish Great Planes do another mfg run of the Shoestring. Was a great all around fun airplane.[:o]

This works for me. 12 or 24 volts. Sullivan starter. I was in RC for 20 yrs before I bought an electric starter. Seemed about half had some kind of problems that really put me off starters until I saw this on RCU. It may be over kill but it flat works on all my engines. Also good for toneing the biceps!!! RE: OS 1.08fsr?
I have the OS 108 on my Mayhem 60. I run 15 percent and a APC 17x4w prop. Vertical out of sight. I don't run a pump and it runs fine. It's a real sweet engine and runs great with no problems. Try the Apc 16x6 also and see which one works best. You're going to like this engine!!

RE: Starters
For 30 years I refused to get an electric starter because I saw to many whimpy starters and batteries. Seem the only thing that seemed to work well required garden tractor battery that weighed a ton added to all the other things in an already heavy flight box. I now have a starter after I saw this setup in RCU. Maybe a little over kill but by god I don't want for more power!!! This box is capable of 12 or 24 volts and my Sullivan Dynatron starter fits inside the case between the batteries. The SOUND!!! If it looks scale I need a 4 stroke in it. If it looks generic it gets a 2 stroke. Either one runs well if set up correctly.

RE: OS 120 III leaking fuel at regulator WHAT GIVES??!
When I got my OS 120 III I rotated the carb 180 degrees and installed it in the airplane. When I first ran it it leaked fuel from the regularor or so I thought!!! Turned out the fuel tubing was cracked and was spraying fuel on the regulator. Sure looked like a regulator leak!! Check the fuel tubing. If that's not it YOU got a problem!!

The best plane I ever stuck an OS91fs in was a Great Planes Shoestring. Fast, smooth and aerobatic to a point. Not like an Edge 540 but still a lot of fun. It died in a midair last fall[:o]. I will have another one before summer is over!!!

RE: Engine Quits After Take Off
Neil, I will assume you have installed a NEW glow plug. The reason I mention this is this is classic results of a worn out glow plug. Had this happen to me a lot in my control line days and a few times in RC. Nearest as I can surmise is the engine stays hot enough under load when not flying but after lift off the I believe the engine cools down because of less load on the engine and the fire goes out. 2-3 seconds after take off. If the engine runs longer say 30 seconds or so it's probably a fuel delivery problem. Anyway when ever I have a problem with an otherwise good running engine I change the glow plug first. If that doesn't work I do all the other stuff the previous replies said. Good luck, Tom

RE: OS-FS70S choke
I had the OS 70fs on a 40 size Laser 200 built from plans about 15 years ago. The 70 was on the plane 12-14 years. I finally retired the plane this year. The OS is now in a Pacific Aeromodels 540T 40 size. I switch to an APC 13x6 for a little more pulling power. It seems to be a good combo and flies well so I leave well enough alone. It's been a good engine. Changed the bearings once or twice but that's it!!

Some how I don't see 4 strokes and electrics flying together. Best to have engine power at a new field and the electrics at the old. More harmony that way.

RE: Futaba or JR, give me your thoughts.
It's hard to give someone an opinion because both radios are stone axe reliable. You will just have to decide which you like best and buy it. Just remember which ever brand you buy is probably what you will stay with the rest of your flying career.Look to the future when you decide to move up to a radio with more features.Which brand will you want then. I have always used Futaba radios and I stay with Futaba because all my equipment is Futaba compatible. I'm very happy with Futaba. You will probably be happy with what ever you buy.

RE: Noise Issues
Doesn't look good. #1 you could try to cut the noise level. That could hold them off for awhile. #2 would be a good neighbor. Hold a club picnic some evening or Saturday and personally invite the neighbors. Go to their houses and hand out fliers. We do a Veterans day fly-in. We get the local Veterans facility to bring out the veterans for the day for a picnic. Again, invite the neighbors.Heck, we even give out several fruit baskets to our nearest neighbors for Christmas. If you can't afford that send cards. We put on three fly-ins a year and always invite the neighbors. The thing is to let them se names and face of the people in their community. Become part of their neighborhood. If you fly seven days a week sun up to sunset you might want to give them some quiet time It has gotten so we know all the neighbors and they know us. We even had one call the cops on teenagers doing donuts on our field. He even blocked the drive way until the cops got there!!! I think you get the point. Be a good neighbor. It goes a long way. If you don't think that will work take the city offer of a new field NOW!! Get it now and start getting ready for the move!!

RE: Acceptable Loss's At Airshows
Roby, I'll add this one. Flying at a different field tends to disrupt your usual routine in setting up your planes and and mental check list. This leads to mistakes even before take off. The rest of the story we know. Even at a fly-in at your home field can lead to a crash. Flyers you don'i normally fly with ,spectators, hambugers and a lot of hanger flying with old friends. We had a charity fly-in for military veterans yesterday and lost 6 airplanes. One was due to a couple of flyers trying to fly formation with 60 size warbirds. They tangled and crashed. Another two were lost to pilot error. The last one was different. Only five plane at a time were allowed to fly at a time. All had spotters. I waited for my turn and took off, climbed out and got into the left hand pattern. Half way around a 30 percent Extra cuts half the right wing off my GP Shoestring with his prop. I crash and the Extra continues on a couple of hundred yards and hits a 60 size Corsair. The Corsair crashes and the Extra lands with it's canopy gone and a little gash in the right wing. The flyer with the Corsair packed up and went home. For me the Shoestring WAS a real nice plane but not having lost an airplane in five years I consider myself very fortunate. I can get another Shoestring In the meantime I have several other planes to fly. We put on three fun flys a year and had not had any mid-airs in several years. Crashes and mid-airs happen even when you do the right things. Some times they come in bunches. Could be what happened at that field where 18 were lost on that weekend.. If you can't afford to lose an airplane your in the wrong hobby. If your going to have a hissy fit, GO HOME!!!

RE: Blue Bird Servos
Got burned on some FMA servos once!! They were a victim of really bad quality controll. Looks like Blue Bird has the same problem!! I'll stick with HiTec. I'm really happy with them and haven't had a bad one yet. Glad some people have a sense of adventure. Saves the rest of use a lot of grief. Thanks for letting the rest of us know. After hearing about that many bad servos in this short thread you will NEVER see a Blue Bird servo in my planes. It only takes one unreliable servo to waste a good airplane!!

Schu,I've had my 9C for over 5 yrs and I still do not have the need for another Tx. Spred the extra money for the 9C over 5 yrs or more and it doesn't seem so much for the Tx you really want or probably ever need. If at all possible get the 9C. Five years down the road you'll be glad you did!!

RE: Which Radio? 9C or xp9303
Both radios are very reliable so there is no reason to change unless the JR has a feature you can't live without. I have a 9CAP and am very happy with it. All my flight packs are Futaba compatable. Haven't had a glitch in the last five years. If I were just getting into RC I would pick one brand or the other and stick with it. For me there is no reason to change now. RC radio gear is excellent and you only need to buy a radio for the features you need.

RE: Prop nut & Spinner Saito FA-72
ORIGINAL: William Robison Another error I see is the Du-Bro spinner. The Du-Bro spinners are excellent with a two stroke engine, but the plastic back plate will not allow a proper tightening of the prop nuts on a 4s engine. If you don't want to spend the money for a metal spinner, at least get a plastic cone spinner with a metal back plate. Or go with no spinner at all. Bill.
Well, I guess I'm doing it wrong again!!! I've been using Du-Bro spinners on all my 4strokes for years and haven't lost a spinner or prop in all that time. What am I doing wrong!!! bbellfly, you never run an engine at max rpm by leaning out the engine to absolute peak. You can destroy an engine in a short amount of time. You should lean out the engine to max rpm and then richen the neeedle to 300 to 400 rpm lower to get a good mixture. I would never run a Saito more than 10,000 rpm. Any rpm higher than that will shorten the life of the engine. If you want more pulling power go to a larger diameter prop with less pitch. Like a 13x5 or 13x6. Enjoy

RE: Bad Glow Plug-Heres a "new one."
Before the start of every flying season I remove every glowplug from my engines and look at them. If the element is nice and shiny it goes back in the engine. If the element looks like cast aluminum I throw it away and put in a new glowplug in that engine. No dead sticks in the last 4 years of flying! A flame out on take off can cost you an airplane. If the engine ran good and then starts to run like crap, change the glowplug first. If that doesn't solve the problem look else where. Glow plugs are cheap compared to the loss of a good airplane. ALWAYS carry extra glowplugs in your flight box!!!
