RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Hi Lee, Stupid thing is... I set up dual rates on the elevators (never on any past plane) because of what I read on here. Then, like a dumb@ss, I took off and flew on full rates, which are about 45 degrees! Was fine at that though, and landed on that too. Felt normal to me in fairness.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Well... I maidened the Sukhoi today! Pretty par for the course. In line with what others have found, mine needed a little up-elevator trim. As far as side thrust went... perfect! Flew really nice, and precise! CG was a little far back compared to what others quote (about 1 inch behind centre of wing tube), but for me, this felt perfect! Still needed a very slight push of elevator when inverted. Flew on high rates, with maximum throws that the surfaces would allow, and she seemed real nice. Engine leaked fuel on test run, which on the last plane (WH Edge 540T v2) I thought was fuel spitting out of the carb. Anyway, the test run a couple of days ago revealed that the leak was on the crankcase (3W 56iB2 twin). So, yesterday, I pulled the engine out, stripped it, and reassembled with Anaerobic high strength gasket sealant... perfect now!!! I have the carb diaphragm housing vent mod done, whereby the atmospheric pressure vent is extended into the fuselage, with a 35mm film canister... But, neglected to cut out part of the covering film at the rear underside of the plane, so I guess the fuselage was pressurised, causing the engine to hunt a little in the midband. Engine is running on MTW RE2 tuned pipe (was on two canisters in the Edge), and I can't believe how smooth and quiet it runs on the pipe... absolute bliss!!! I expected the plane to slow down a lot for landing, but found she wanted to glide on just like any other??? Real nice though! In all... love it! Oh, had to modify the canopy screw-down blocks, as otherwise, it would have pulled the sides of the fuselage in too far when tightening the screws, and damaged something. Will get pics of this... easy fix!

Well... my Goal between Christmas Eve, and now, was not only to get my Sukhoi finished & maidened, but also to get a whole load of flying time in! I failed in almost every area!!! However, I have almost finished the plane as of today, and had a run out of the engine. Just a couple of final details to take care of, and hopefully, will maiden her on Tuesday :) Mike.

Hi Tired Old Man... The EF plane I have, is the Extra, not the Edge. I still feel the Sukhoi will be better than this though. Thanks for the advice about incidences, I'll check them all. Re problems with WH QC... I now feel compelled to comment that if someone has issues with I product (my three previous WH planes have been fine), they should go back to the supplier and get everything sorted, rather than slating the product in the public domain. If nothing gets done about it, then you can start bitchin' publicly.

RE: New Wild Hare Sukhoi ready to fly
Ok, I've spent many hours over the last two days reading this entire thread, and it seems that there are many engine combos being used with this plane. Now, I have a feeling/desire, that I don't hope to get talked out of... I am besotted (having yesterday heard one) with the 3W 112i B4 (flat four), and seeing that one gent on here has his built light with 3W 106, and weighing 25.5 lbs, I figure I can get this plane to weigh in at 27.3 ~ 27.5 lbs with the four cylinder engine. Now, I'm thinking backwards here, as I am looking for a plane to suit this engine, rather than vice-versa. The plane in question has already had the firewall modded (shortened) by the dealer, with this engine in mind. So, what do you guys reckon... if the plane weighs in at this, or perhaps slightly more, will it matter??? I am looking to use JR 8911's on all surfaces (one per aileron). Many thanks, Mike.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Thanks for the responses Pupmeister, and Chuck... just what I needed to hear, and will enable to save a little weight. I have given my Edge V2 to a fellow flyer (young, and very talented, but no money!), so he will resurrect it (new rudder, and repair LG mount again) and get her in the air again. The Edge, was my fourth WH (had two 84" Extras, killed both), and simply incredible, and incredibly tough... so the Sukhoi has some big expectations to live up to!!! [:D] If she doesn't, I will go out and buy another V2 Edge, as to date, it's simply the nicest plane I've flown! I also have an EF 88.5" Extra that will be finished soon, so i will be interesting how they compare. Some of my fellow flyers seem to think the EF one will be better, but frankly, I am hedging my bets on the Sukhoi, which is why I am now so desperate to get her airbourne! Hopefully, News Year's Day will be maiden day! [;)]

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Hi, @ Pupmeister... I think that the 8911 is just a metal cased version of the 8711? I only bought them as I thought they were top of the range, and had a friend in Japan visit in July, so he brought them with him. But, I agree that they are an overkill, and that 8425's all round would have been plenty. But, hey ho, thats the way it goes! ;) Chuck... I guess you mean a pack of two A123 batteries (6.6v)? Impressive that you can run everything from that!!! Reassuring too. As for the Sukhoi... I think this is just about the sexiest thing out there!!! I also have an EF 88.5" Extra in the garage that will be ready soon (also powered by 3W 56i B2 twin), but I much prefer the Sukhoi! I have to say that the Sukhoi has big boots to fill, as I absolutely loved my V2 Edge... simply amazing plane, and the only reason I crashed it so often, is that it was soooo much fun, and such a confidence builder that I kept pushing it too hard doing silly things!!! I am planning to maiden the Sukhoi by Thursday! As for the wing rock... High alpha (harrier) flight is my fave thing, and I am guessing that it will be ok, even with the rear stab position. Fingers crossed! ;) Mike.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Ok, have now read each and every page of this thread over the last couple of days, and almost feel like I know you guys! [:D] Anyway, have concluded that I will stick with the rearward stab location. I notice with great interest, the use of the A123 LiFe batteries... My question on this one, is I will be using an AR9100 receiver, along with JR DS8911 servos on ailerons & rudder, and probably DS8425's on the elevators. I believe these servos are for 4.8v use, but the Spektrum receivers need more voltage than this. Is it safe to use these A123 batteries without a regulator with these servos? I am hoping to have my plane built and ready to fly by Tuesday or Wednesday, using the 3W 56i twin from my Edge, but with a KS tuned pipe. It pulls 7400 on cans with 23x8 JXF prop, so should be an interesting combo. Thanks, Mike.

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!
Hi, I have pretty much killed my WH V2 Edge 1 1/2 weeks ago, but have a Sukhoi in the garage that I bought (mostly built) from the UK importer. He has built it with the rearward stab location, and I am wondering if I should change it to the forward location? My Edge was by far the best plane I have ever flown, of any size, and lasted me a miraculous 13 months!!! Upright high alpha flight was one thing that I particularly enjoyed with this plane, and I am wondering how the Sukhoi (with rear stab location) will compare to this, and what the pros & cons are between the two locations??? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

I've pretty much killed my V2 Edge :-( It has been the longest lasting plane I have ever had (13 months), and by far the best flyer I ever had, in any size!!! I dumba$$ed it the other day, ending up with ripped out U/C (done this many times), rudder smashed to pieces, and cowl former broken. Not much, I know, but I have a 50CC Sukhoi to get built, that I am itching to fly!!! If I am in any way disappointed with this one, I will fix the Edge up again. Fantastic plane!!! Mike.

RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
Glad to see this thread is on the move again! I now have the Graphtech LG, Wing tube, and Stab tube for mine. I've never upgraded these parts for any other plane before, but I like this one sooo much, that I just had to do it! I find the plane is fantastically stable at high alpha stuff, but my CG is probably a little rearward. Whether right way up, or inverted, she won't come down! If you come in for a low pass at idle, she will almost fly level, but even as she gets close to stall point, she will still start to go very slightly nose up. So, when I have to land, I have to push slightly down. However, I like high alpha landings so much (and our runway is very short) that I tend to just put her down in this manner all the time. This plane is simply incredible! Every flight is just more and more enjoyable! I have just about got the knack of locking her into hovers now, and bringing her up real close. This plane seems a lot more responsive that the Extra (current WH 50cc) that I had before. Rudder reaction seems particularly more lively, so I have had to adjust my use of the controls a little. Can't wait until my next flight! Mike.

RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
Hi Charrua, I think the engine and ignition weighs in at 4.04 lbs. It says 4.51 on the 3W site, but I am sure this is wrong. Obviously, the headers and cans add a little, but saying that, the headers are extremely thin walled and light, and the cans are very small and light too. I have no idea of the weight of the plane, but will weigh it in the next day or so since you have asked the question. I had all the same radio/engine in the 50cc Extra, with two 2400 Li-ion packs in the tail for ignition, and radio. In the Extra, it needed about 50 grams of lead attached to the underside of the rudder, but with the same placement in the V2 Edge, the CG is perhaps half an inch too far back? The plane climbs both ways up, and you have to push down to get it to land. So, I will move the ignition battery up front and see how things are then. I was in a kind of strange situation with this plane and engine... My feelings for the engine are nearly bad enough to make my Wife have me committed to an institution (not a flying club!). Part of me was set on another plane of another brand, but I was adamant that there was no way I would switch away from this engine for a single cylinder/single can combo that would have been necessary for that plane. Sure, I could have made up a new 2 into 1 header, but I figured the easier option was to give the Edge a shot... Boy, am I glad I did! I can't imagine being more impressed with a plane than this! I really like high-alpha (harrier) flight, and love getting really low, and really tight maneuvers, and given two brief flights, I am sure I will make huge progress with this plane. On the Extra, if you applied to much elevator, she would drop a wing. With the Edge, you can pull as hard as you like, and it still doesn't bite. But, do some degree, most planes have a point where they will drop a wing when you do this, but it seems the Edge just won't! With the Extra, I learn't to work around this, but sometimes, if you got into trouble and needed to pull hard, things could become very un-nerving. I hope to get some more video in the next few days once I feel more at ease having not flown for so long prior to yesterdays maiden. Will post it, and pics. Does anyone know where in the UK I can get the Graphtech landing gear, or can I buy it from your side of the water? Best, Mike.

RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
Well, have been checking this thread out since the very first day the thread started. I have had two of the WH 50cc 84" Extra's (latest model), the first of which I smashed up. The second one, I retired because of the V2 Edge, and needing to rob the engine and radio. Well, I have been away for the last month on business, and have come back to my new Edge, which my mate Maurice has very kindly built up for me. Up front is my much adored 3W 56iB2 twin, with two cans, Futaba radio, with S9351 digital servos. Will post pics, and video as soon as edited. I have to say though, that there were a few things I wasn't comfortable with regarding the Extra, but with the Edge, all I can say is... WOW!!!!! Only had two brief flights, but found the plane to be unbelievably faultless in my eyes!!! CG is a little far back, as climbs both ways up, and is between 5 3/4" and 6". Highlights at first glance... You can pull a wall, and the plane does it so sharply, that it virtually backflips! Harrier flight is probably better than the Extra, but I was particularly happy with the Extra in that respect. You can pull a loop, and no matter how hard you pull up on the way down, it simply won't drop a wing... and pull full up, she just flops straight over into high-alpha attitude... something the Extra just wouldn't seem to tolerate (perhaps a wing loading issue given my setup being heavier than DA derivatives?) Hovering seems good, but the plane seems more sensitive to inputs that the Extra, but I haven't flown for six weeks, so maybe it's just me. I need to setup up the throttle curve though, as the midband is pretty much all-or-nothing, and too rich. I'm confident I'll get to grips with this though. I quickly discovered that I can do really tight high-alpha turns with this, just like a Shocky! In fact, my favourite plane for 'throwing around' in this manner, is my little electric 47" EF Edge... but the WH seems even better!!! I never thought this could be possible!!!??? Sorry if I sound OTT with this, but in just two flights I am completely astounded by this plane!!! Mike. RE: Laser 150 four stroke glow results
150 isn't very thirsty, even the 240V twin will give long flights for a given amount of fuel. I think a Saito or YS will use a lot more. You have to be careful which Laser you use, as some of them have very good power to weight, but some are very heavy. The 70 is very light, as s the 150, and 240V. Others aren't so favourable. Best, Mike.

RE: Laser 150 four stroke glow results
Hi Glen, Laser only sell directly, as their manufaturing techniques/costs don't allow enough margin for retailers to be able to make anything. Lasers website is www.laserengines.com, and their phone numbers can be found there. I have a Laser 70, 150, and two 240V twins (one still new in box). They all seem to be very econimical! In respect of gas... for big planes, I don't think you can beat gas, but in smaller planes, I would go with Laser personally, as I love them! :) I have a 3W 56ib2 horizontally opposed twin gas engine in my Wildhare 50cc Extra, and love it to bits! RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
I would agree with 'hoss' (I think that means BS?). I have never once touched the needles on mine, not even on the first run. It will give me a 15 minute run in my WH Extra, and still have a third of a tank left, despite very heavy use of throttle for hovering, etc. Had about 6 gallons through it now, and the engine hasn't quite on me once. I think where the simplicity lies with this one, is that it has one carb shared between the two cylinders, so it's either right for both cylinders, or wrong for both. My four stroke Laser 240V twin cylinder glow engines are another story, and there is a knack to getting them right. Mike.

Firstly, Pat, sorry mate, I misread your name when I typed my last post aimed at you. Your comments about the Edge not snapping, is very inspiring to me! Gonna have to go this route now! Altavillan, Am curious about your two into one header, and pipe combo... would be very keen to see pics!? As for trying to get more power though... 56i gets 7400 rpm with 23 x 8 Mejzlik, after about 5 gallons of fuel, and to this date, I haven't touched the needles, not even on the first run! Two of the guys have the DA50 near me, and only get around 6700 - 6800 with the same prop. The difference in thrust is far more than the difference in weight, so I'm very happy. Am very intrigued though, as to what RPM you are getting on the tuned pipe? :) You've gone and confused matters now though, as will have to check out the Sukhoi!!! ;) Thanks, Mike.

RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
Hi Pat Boy... I agree that the 56i twin is heavier than need be, but the cans are much smaller that a single 50 size can, and also the headers are much smaller diameter, and very thin walled, so I think the exhaust system is very little heavier than a 50cc single. But, nonetheless, the setup is probably a pound heavier than a DA 50 setup. Anyway, next week, will most likely jump onto the 'Edge' bandwagon ;-) Am heavily inclined towards this plane! BTW... when you talk of tight maneuvors at 16.5 to 17 lbs, are you referring to the Edge, or the F-18? Mike.

RE: 50cc Edge V2 has landed
Hi Barry, Have been watching this thread for a while now with great interest! I have the new 84" WH Extra (my second, as smashed my first up), which is fitted with a 3W 56i B2 twin, with two canister mufflers. I really like what the plane does well, and it is great in high alpha flight (my fav), and also hovering. The plane is generally brilliant, but a little prone to dropping a wing is too much elevator is applied in tight turns/loops, etc. I have checked incidences, and lateral balance, etc, and figure that it is just a high speed wong stall, although it happens sometimes when you least expect it, and doesn't do it when you sometimes expect it to. Anyway, I figure that my engine silencer setup ends up with a plane that is maybe as much as a pound heavier than a DA 50, but I love the engine, and it's power, so won't change. Now, I figured that since the Edge has 90 inches more wing area, then perhaps it will be better in this respect than the Extra? If memory serves, you have flown both. So, do you think the Edge is a better plane? And, what do you think of my engine weight/wing load theory in respect of the Extra? Anyones thoughts on this would be most welcomed! Thanks, Mike.

Wow... surprised to see this had been dragged to the top! As sheer coincidence... I crashed the Giles last year. The firewall was broken and ripped out on one side, UC was ripped out, Rudder and vert stab also damaged. She has sat in my garage ever since. Then, a few weeks ago, I gave the plane to a mate of mine, and told him he could use the engine and radio until the plane no longer existed. Well, last week, I flew her again. My flying has come on a long way since I last flew this plane. Well... WOW! Absolutely loved every minute of the two flights I had! The plane is just so easy to fly, and so easy to do anything with. It hovers incredibly easy, harriers easy. Waterfalls and blenders are incredible even though slightly underpowered. With my flying improved, I now rate this plane extremely favourably against the planes in my current hangar! This has inspired me to get my finger out, and build my EF 74" Yak! Mike.

Well guys.. finally got my 2nd Wildhare Extra finished and maindened (smashe first one up in March) today. Seem to be dropping a wing slightly, but am using one new wing, and one old one, so may be a balance/incidence difference issue between the two wings. Will build up the new one tomorrow.
