RE: katana snaps with minimal elevator input
If I'm reading your first post correctly the elevator pushrod is a single wooden dowel with the metal rods in a Y to the individual elevator halves. Have a Modeltech Sukhoi that was set up the same (keyword - was). The dowel was not guided or restrained and under load it would always snap to one side increasing the throw on one elevator half and decreasing it on the other. Loads of fun. Trashed the pushrod, put two servo's in the tail, no more problems. Mike

If you like the SE because it's 3 piece check out a Hard Bet (I think the plans are free at HSRCM?). It's kind of like a SE with a major attitude. Mike

Kevin; Actually just the opposite. SE's got a much smaller leading edge radius. Wing thickness is about the same but the thickest point is further back on the SE. Mike

RE: Hard Bet Build
I've got the Hard Bet and the SE and fly them both all the time. If I were switching wings I'd put the Hard Bets on the SE. The Hard Bets wing does everything better especially slow high alpha. Mike

RE: OS .46 vs Super Tigre .51 in 3D Profile Plane
I've got both and although I really like the ST51 I prefer the OS46. You need to put an OS or Tower muffler on the ST51 to get rid of some weight and the carb's murder on throttle servo's and low speed positioning. It's got way too much resistance. The OS46 will work with an HS55, the ST51 will stall it. I usually stick a standard servo on the ST51. If you want to get the most bang for your buck get a K&B 61 (Twister) same weight as the OS46 and you can get it for $80 with a junk trade. Mike

Futaba 3004's with long arms (AER), Hitec HS55 (T), 750mah nimh (AAA) battery. Mine's just over 4 1/2 lbs.

RE: *Rossi .45 for 3D*
Great engine but I got rid of mine, its got a big case (heavy, uses a 60 size mount) and it makes its power too high (doesn't have a lot of low end grunt). Better choices would be ST51 (Tower muffler), OS50, MVVS 49, Irvine53, K&B 60 (Twist). Mike

RE: Every wish you could just fly and avoid all the politcal BS?
Really cracks me up. Alot of the whining in here is from people who've been told they're breaking AMA or Club rules. And the poor baby's are being yelled at, my, my, how rude, they'll of course be able to get it on the ground before anybody else notices or gets hurt. These people have a lot of nerve expecting you to follow the rules you've agreed to abide by by joining these orginizations, but you don't even know where to find them much less what they say, just a bunch of BS. It's OK for the other Club members to get yelled at by the cops or anybody else with a gripe after you've left. Don't sweat the flack that may cause us to lose the field, somebody else will handle it. This thread pretty much breaks down into two camps. One is the peolple who realize that being in this hobby requires acceptance of certain responsibilities. The other is those that "just want to fly". There isn't a flying field in the world being provided to anyone in the hobby by those in the second group. So what's your point? Mike

RE: What's a good radio for the Mini 3D?
The Berg-5*DSPII is the best in the state of the art performance to be found in a R/C receiver available today. Its small, lightweight size is due to the surface mount technology used throughout. The Transmitter Signal Recognition (TSR) of the receiver learns the characteristics, or the signature of the transmitter, and this makes it compatible with all brands of FM transmitters. The first four of the five output channels are fixed, and the fifth output port is programmable to be either channel 5 or channel 6 with two jumpers. This small, lightweight receiver is a full-range, no compromise, super narrow band receiver using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in the servo pulse decoder for optimum performance in even the worst RF environments. By itself, this receiver weighs only 10.0 grams. It is packaged in a strong, lightweight, fuel-proof, case (3.5 grams).

RE: Every wish you could just fly and avoid all the politcal BS?
Just took over as president of a club. We've got 68 members that just "want to fly". I got the job because nobody else would step up. Our clean ups and fun fly's may or may not have food and drinks as getting someone to volunteer to pick the stuff up is like pulling teeth. We provide training for new members and the club owns 3 trainer planes. The planes reside at a lockbox at the field (outside storage makes a mess out of planes and electronics over the winter) because nobody will volunteer to keep and maintain them. If someone uses one of the trainers and busts it up it usually gets snuck back in to the lockbox broken. Most of the members that were picked up over the past few years don't know what a pilot station is, much less where they're located and what they're for. And hovering a Raptor 2 feet in front of somebodys face is cool, what's wrong with that. I personally can't think of anybody in this hobby that doesn't "just want to fly". To keep our field open, useable and of minimal risk to all members requires an annual AMA Charter, annual proof of AMA insurance provided to the field owner, annual incorporation, annual dues collection to pay for the above, maintenance of a roster to confirm who paid, maintenance of a bank account to keep the club funds, procurement and issuance of membership cards, annual verification of AMA membership, maintenance and printing of Membership Applications, By Laws and Field Rules, a volunteer for Field Safety Officer, maintenance of the field itself and somebody to remember that all this stuff has to be done. That's just to keep the place open. Any other activity incurs additional work. The way I see it, everybody in this hobby has made a choice to fly RC. In this area that personal choice pretty much requires that you find an AMA chartered club. The AMA chartered part means no one uses the field without AMA membership and the field's use will be in accordance with AMA. The club part means that somebody's got to do the above mentioned stuff or nobody flies. If anybody can explain to me how "I just want to fly" can apply to every person in the club I'd love to hear it. Until then all I can say is that if "all you want to do is fly" you're in the wrong hobby, and if you "dont have the time" all I can say is people make the time to do the things they really want to do. One nice thing about this club is that there's no political BS. Nobody wants the jobs. Mike

Plane also needs an airfoil that can handle the low speeds with a light wing loading.

On something that size the thin airfoil will probably have a sharper stall break, not a great thing for 3D. Check the Capiche posts for a comparison of thick and thin airfoil characteristics. Mike

Servo failure mode?
Crashed a plane due to an aileron servo going hard over during flight. Reconnected everything on the ground and cannot duplicate the problem, everything works fine with no glitches. The only thing missing on the ground is the engine vibration. What component failure would cause 1 servo out of 5 to go hard over? Mike

RE: Easy Star: Need HELP!!!!!!!!
Flies great out of the box. The RTF flies well and the only change you might want to make eventually is to get a larger battery pack. The kit version I built to use as our club trainer has been flying fo over a year, with 8c 1800 nimh and 8c 1100 nicd. IMHO best electric trainer on the market. Mike

RE: what airfoil for 3d plane?
For something that small a flat plate's probably the best and easiest. I you insist on an airfoil, go super fat (18% at least) with a large leading edge radius, max thickness 20% or less and low AR like the Fun 15 (Mini 3D) Mike
