RE: Model Fly Beaver with Floats
I reviewed this plane a while back and I don't remember running into that problem. Just place the cowl on without the engine and measure how far the firewall is from the front of the cowl. Review

Just rip them out and glue them where they should be - it's intrenal, so no one will ever see it.

RE: Hangar 9 Blue Nose P-51 ARF
Well, the verdict is in - It's a keeper! Unlike many of Horizon's P-51s, this one is NOT a sport plane that LOOKS like a P-51. It feels heavy like a warbird should. I like!

RE: Winter Project .60 Plane?
Yea, the problem with trike gear in many planes is that there is no room under the tank for the gear to fold into.

RE: Colors?
In a nutshell, military colors ARE difficult to see - after all, they were intentionally chosen so the enemy can't easily spot them One trick is to add the invasion stripes that were used for D-Day. That helps quite a bit.

RE: Winter Project .60 Plane?
Get these: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN242011 I just used these on the H-9 P-51 Blue Nose and they are fantastic. The down side is, they each require their own retract servo, (and they are on backorder right now) But they are insanely cheap for what you are getting. I would expect to pay $100 - $200 for a set of retracts this good but they are only $36

RE: C.G. Question
If you can't get the plane to "balance" - that is, to stay on the balancer without teetering to one side or the other, it's no big deal. If you place it on the balancer and hold it level and it will drop to one side consistantly (Nose or tail) add weight to the other side until it will drop to either side equally. In other words, let's say you place it on the balancer, level it and it drops to the tail, now level it again, but tip it slightly nose-down and it tips toward the nose, you are close enough. Remember that the balance point is not necessarily an EXACT point. Adding fuel will change it, getting dirt and oil on the plane will change it, etc. So getting it close is close enough. This is why we usually tell people to err on the nose-heavy side. This way, if there are any minor changes, you have a built-in safety margin.

RE: covering question - yet another
The shape of the wingtip has a lot to do with it. If the top and bottom color is the same and jagged edge is not nearly as noticeable (One reason I like red wingtips on top and bottom!) Usually, you can cut off any excess close and seal down the edge with an iron.

RE: Retracts - Mechanical or Pneumatic?
ORIGINAL: makmov Often easier said than done.
Not at all. My rule for retracts is: 1, if it's a Taildragger = Mechanicals 2, if it has a Nosewheel = Pnumatics 3, Avoid a nose wheel :D

RE: servo question
It's usually no need for concern. Try this... Find the servo that's buzzing and tap it's control surface in each direction. If the buzzing stops, don't sweat it, the engine vibrations will do the same thing as the tapping you did. Not to mention the fact that if any control surface has any trim applied to it, the air moving over it will also place a load on the servo - but then the engine is running and it's up in the air so you never hear it.

RE: TowerHobbies discounts - Current and Thanksgiving tim
The 7c is an item that is in high demand, you won't see too many big discounts on it. And if you wait till the holidays, you run a real risk of having it back ordered.

RE: How to avoid the rubber ring on the spinner
The bottom line is - That ring is caused by friction when the starter is spinning but the prop is not. The only way to avoid it is: Before applying the starter, rotate the prop CLOCKWISE until you reach the compression on the back side. Now, push the starter against the spinner FIRMLY - Then, turn it on. The prop will spin freely for about 1 1/4 turns until it hits the compression, which gives it a "running start". It will now spin through the compression easily. If you don't give it that running start, the prop can stop when it hits compression and if you're not holding the starter firmly enough against the spinner, it will slip and rub that nasty ring into it.

RE: Restoration Project: UltraSport 40
It wouldn't hurt to heat it. It also might help to turn it over so gravity will help the oil come out.

RE: Winter Project .60 Plane?
I really prefer Mechanicals. They may be a little more difficult to set up, but they don't require the constant re-filling of pnumatics (not to mention you don't have to worry about air leaks) As for putting them in an Ultra Sport... Definately! One of the tricky things about ANY retracts is that the rails they mount to must be parallel. The best way I have found to do this is:
