RE: Gas mix for a 35cc Quadra
Yes indeed, you won't have any issues if you run a decent weedeater/chainsaw mix in that engine. Most guys like that 30:1-40:1 range. I am a little more "aggressive" with my mixtures.. it has a lot to do with the fact that my pops has extensive small engine experience and after talking about a recommendation given to me by another modeler, who's opinions I respect immensely, we both decided that 100:1 Amsoil Sabre was what we would use.. I think all the info stated previously is all sound advice so you should be good!!

RE: Transmitter operated kill switch ( toks
A lot of fellas I know recommend using an Opti-kill. I don't.. but I DO advise in putting some kind of method of killing your ignition remotely in the event of a broken linkage or a servo freezing. I had this happen recently on a plane and had not yet set up an electrical kill that could be actuated from the transmitter. The plan was to wire in a micro switch and use a small servo to engage(close) and disengage(open) the switch. I simply wired the switch into series with the ground of the battery. I actually wired it in on a 6" extension so it didn't actually get cut into either the switch harness or the battery themselves. One other point is because I wired it in between the switch and battery, I have to make sure the switch is closed so that I can charge the battery.

RE: Mufflers for gas engines
ORIGINAL: opjose
ORIGINAL: acerc You could always do the steel wool up the pipe. I have one that way and it's quite as a mouse.
I've seen several people recommend this... I would like to try it but I have a nagging question for you..... Steel wool ignites VERY EASILY ( just take a match to it and see ), and it doesn't need high heat for ignition. A small spark is enough to get it going if it is heated. Given that the exhaust on a gas engine is basically a hot flame on the virge of going out, doesn't the steel wool ignite while in the muffler? Have you ever looked at it or removed it after use? Does it still feel and behave like Steel Wool after it has been removed, or has it turned into brittle oxidized metal? I'm afraid of the latter getting back into the cylinder head accidentally. If it does ignite I wonder if something thicker and less prone to ignite might work just as well, such as the heavier steel wire often used for drain traps? The stuff sold for catching lint coming out of clothes washer hoses may do an even better job.
I think he is leaving out a key piece of info here.. The steel wool that us as modelers are accustomed to using and seeing is mostly the very fine stuff used for buffing when weathering and things such as that.. At least that's my opinion about it. I used to use it alot as a kid but up until just now, totally forgot about the coarser grades of the steel wool. I THINK that is what he is refering to rather than the fine stuff that you may be thinking about. Otherwise, I agree with your concerns exactly.

Well that certainly beats my pocket sized digital camera.. One day I would like to get a nicer piece so I can do better photography on some of the available aircraft that I occasionally come across..

RE: site virus
I have been using AVG for several years and only recently had any problems. Those problems only lasted a couple weeks and now, I don't have any problems anywhere on this site.

RE: P-51 MUSTANG PHOTOS ONLY
Daggum Chris!! I wish they had let me get closer so I could get the detail shots I wanted on all the birds like that! I was there last fall around this time and had a day off from the work I was doing. I spent several hours there talking with just about anyone who wanted to share a story with me and met some impressive people.. Nice pictures!!

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I voted for Military schemes only but after some of the very good points made here in the last few days.. I honestly have had a change of heart.. there IS a lot of grey area and it should only be a warbird within reason to me.. some of the most heavily modified racers I would say fall the deepest into the grey areas.. but in the end.. if one showed up where I live or fly and the guy flew the piss out of it and did a nice job with the landings and take offs.. I would be willing to bet I wouldn't really give too much of a hoot!.. Good job illustrating your points fellas!

RE: rcu virus
As I understand it, it's the stringent nature of AVG Anti-virus. I am using it and in order to browse the marketplace, I have to turn it off temporarily.. its inconvenient but I would not use any other virus protection than AVG personally.. I really like the features it grants.

RE: Model Aviation and Dogs
That's all good stuff guys, thanks for sharing. I think that since we are working out a long term lease deal with the Corps of Engineers, it would be prudent to probably include some kind of leash rules or an outright ban on dogs on the site. Some of the membership are talking about putting on a fun fly and inviting the public.. I have seen what happens when the unknowing public bring their dogs out. I would rather stay home than try to fly with that sort of ruckus, nor would I want to have to go around and pick up the doo left behind by folks who are too ignorant or inconsiderate to pick it up themselves. Far be it from me to hope that people can act like good citizens. We will see what the contract says when it is all drawn up I guess

RE: MonoKote reds
I have some Missile Red and IF I had to put money on it, I would guess that it is the brightest of the three. My stuff seems to be rather bright compared to other reds that I have seen on other planes. I can't speak for the other two though.

Sounds like a winner to me Gary!.. I hope to see it in person one day.. all you guys and your gigantic planes..I feel like I am being left behind in the dust.. all I have is a partially built Meister P-47.. The Meisters looked like toys compared to that 12 foot monster Frank and Scott flew last year..

Model Aviation and Dogs
Hey guys, does anyone know if there are standing regulations or rules in regards to dogs at RC flying events?. I thought there was something about 100% leash control or something. Maybe it was just a club thing I picked up somewhere...

RE: Got my wings, what now?
after I successfully performed a solo while training, I was instructed to spend several flights doing nothing but flat turn figure 8s.. to learn how to manipulate the rudder and counter with ailerons.. it got me lots of good rudder experience that benefited me greatly when I started flying low wing stuff. landing in a strong crosswind with a light plane makes you use that rudder and counter ailerons to keep lined up for landing.. invaluable training experience for me. It also led to my and my dad doing side by side touch and goes with various aircraft.. the crowd loved those

RE: To all who recomended the 4*120 for my DLE20
Cripes.. a 16x8??.. I use that on my 60"-70" warbirds for a good balance between speed and climb performance if it were me, I would try a wood 17x6 or an 18x6 as they are lighter, and should free the engine up some compared to a composite prop of the same size... which could give you that nice strong vertical you are looking for. If it is too much prop.. stepping down to the 4 pitch may be the ticket.. I would save that 16x8 for something a little speedier that comes along down the road..

Indeed my friend. Big hurdles in my camp as well and so the RCing has been rather limited to foamy flights and I JUST got the final wrinkles sorted out with my Top Flite T-6 and will be going out and putting a few more flights on her tomorrow morning.. My 47 is sitting in the corner patiently awaiting the later fall when I can give her the attention she needs.
