RE: How to handle a difficult pilot!
16 pages, 392 posts! Wow!! Why? Let's say I'm the FCMG. I'm flying my airplane on 2.4 Ghz at this flying field in a city park which has rules posted, good, bad; or indifferent. The signs says I must have my AMA card. A person approaches me that I've talked to before at the park, asking if I have my AMA card. My natural instinct is to get out my wallet and show the guy my AMA card! Like someone else said, I'm there to fly! End of story! Why would I get mad and even if I felt ill treated, why would I threaten anybody?

I'm going to go with TFF on this. If the balance is right, the elevator should be o.k.!

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Sopwith Snipe build
I had assumed Abu was going to set his expo the way he likes it. I set the low rate conservative and high rate more aggressive, in case I find I need way more throw on a test flight. Being conservative might place you in a place with to little throw in both rates. I use expo to make the stick around neutral (where we fly most of the time) feel the same in both high and low rates.
ORIGINAL: khodges
ORIGINAL: Mode One Does the SPAD have lightening holes? SPAD used a pile of ribs in their wings! My guess is Balsa USA may have cut down on the amount of ribs used in the wing, also.
The fullscale wing has a top edge ''bow'' and a bottom... on the other for rigidity. The BUSA kit has a correct rib count. That's one of their advertising

RE: Heat Shrink Fabric?
There are many fabric type of coverings. As well as Coverite, mentioned by Cutaway, there is Solartex, which is probably the most popular brand now-a-days. On bigger airplanes Aircraft Spruce and Specialties sells a light Ceconite, the same only lighter material used to cover real "rag" covered airplanes. SIG manufacturing has Kover-All. I think both the Ceconite and Kover-All need an adhesive to be painted onto the frame to hold these materials on. There are likely many more fabric materials I do not know about.

RE: Changing an airfoil profile
ORIGINAL: abufletcher Of course to be a fair comparison, the two models would also have to have comparable wing loadings, wing (and elevator) areas, and moment arms. No fair comparing stall characteristics of a non-scale, long nosed Pup with a scale, short nosed one! Of course, it's obvious that a true scale model is going to be harder to fly than a sport scale model.
Dah

RE: Is there more to AMA than paying your money and flying your model airplane?
ORIGINAL: Navy_1 Maybe the thread should have read why I should join. I’m not a member ,It has the insurance but that’s really all I can see it offers. What benefits does it off. Will a person from the AMA come to help me set up my plane or heli and give me free instructions? Do I get discounts on parts and fuel? I went to an AMA section club and stopped flying due to the type of people that were there. The president told me I couldn’t bring my Son is this not were the bonding happens passing it from teh DAD to teh son, is that the kinda of people that are the AMA. I know nothing about the AMA except what I read on the forums and there web site and the little contact I have had with members at local flying fields so tell me why should i join?
It's to bad this was your first experience with an R/C Club. You are making a "Snap" judgment on what the AMA is about from your bad experience and information you might read here. Obviously the club you visited no longer needs any new members! Yes, the AMA provides secondary insurance and primary, if that is needed. It also provides insurance for the owner of the property the club flying field is located on, a very nice help for finding, procuring and keeping flying sites! Yes, R/Cers will help you set-up your airplane and help you learn to fly. My club is big into family values and although children (for safety sake) need to be controlled, are welcome, as it's easily understood that sometimes Dad can't get away, unless he can take the kids with. Promoting the hobby to the youth and getting them involved, is very important to this hobby! This and other AMA forums are not the right place to learn about the AMA, sorry to say! Most of the people I've met in this hobby are great people very interested in helping promote the hobby! Since I fly at an AMA Club and generally only meet people who are members of the AMA, my experiences with them are quite the opposite from what you have experienced. I am sure there are great people who are not members of the AMA, also. As in all walks of life there are good and not so good people. The people involved in R/C and the AMA are no different!

Abu, I would set your minimum throws on low Dual Rates and increase the throw in high Dual Rate 25-35%. Take off in Low Rates and if you need more you can always go to High Rate. I would guess you know this.

RE: Changing an airfoil profile
It sure would be interesting if someone who has flown both a Balsa USA type airfoil and a scale airfoil on the same airplane could give some input here. My question is: at 1/4th-1/3rd scale, do scale airfoils fly as good as flat bottomed airfoils? The ability to build an airplane without rigging wires (even though most probably are built with) ease of flight characteristics, simplicity of building and covering, who knows why? Whatever the reason, BUSA has found a niche, that has allowed them to be successful, at a time when kit manufacturers are struggling! By the way, Khodges, I found the SPAD XIII's real airfoil as plotted by the Germans in the Great War (obviously from a captured SPAD). They are shown in WW1 Aero No. 183, Feb. 2004. Email Tom Polapink, I think this issue is still available as original printing.

Personally, I would by-pass any radio that is not 2.4Ghz. However, if you want to get into the hobby dirt cheap, go to Ebay or here at RCUniverse and buy a used 72 Mhz system. They are selling for dirt cheap, as 2.4 stuff is taking over.

RE: Changing an airfoil profile
My 1/4th scale Balsa USA Neiuport 28 has an aileron wire passage hole, only in the lower wing. It's forward and high on the ribs. There are no "Lightening holes" in any of the ribs on this kit, if there are on the SPAD, I can't say. I wouldn't have worried about cutting undercamber into my existing ribs on the N-28, even if the line of the cut away portion went through the holes in the bottom wing ribs, as the cap strips would bridge this gap. Does the SPAD have lightening holes? SPAD used a pile of ribs in their wings! My guess is Balsa USA may have cut down on the amount of ribs used in the wing, also.
ORIGINAL: combatpigg I will say though that getting involved in some form of competition will speed up the learning rate many times, too.
I agree, I sail competitively and always tell people I learn more in 3 days of racing my sailboat then I do, sailing it the rest of the year! However, I really have no interest in competing in R/C, I do this for fun and have found I don't feel R/C competition is fun. I have done some competitive sailplane flying (duration for RES type sailplanes) so, know from where I speak. This is for myself, of course! I am not bad mouthing competition! I know that competition pushes product development, makes products better, drives down prices, etc. Life is plenty competitive as it is, so it's not like I'm turning away from competition, I just feel some aspects of my life can do without it!

RE: Pull Pull servo placement
ORIGINAL: lnewqban My response to your questions is yes. Both must be in line and symmetry; rotated positions around that line are non-critical. Check this out: http://members.cox.net/bdfelice/Ackerman/ackerman.htm
What a great post, full of information, Thank you for making this information available! I had never heard of the term "Ackerman" before and I'm sure most of the Ackerman's of the world have never heard their names being used like this either! The Author states in the beginning that the term being used here, is a misnomer! When discussing this information previously (servo geometry and control surface throw) I've always heard this to be described as differential. Trax540 you do not want any "Ackerman" or differential in your system, as far as the geometry of pull-pulls are concerned.

RE: Pull Pull servo placement
I disagree with kit builder. If the servo arm is smaller, you simply wont get as much throw as you would if the arm was the same or bigger. There is mechanical advantage (more leverage) to a smaller servo arm, which is a good thing, if you end up with the amount of throw you need. Having the elevator servo upright is o.k.

RE: Dynaflite SE5A / S.E. 5A / SE-5 / SE-5A / Build
I did modify my landing gear to allow some springiness. I cut what was the two axel ends in the middle of the landing gear assembly and used a brass tube and solder to join them together in the middle, making a spreader bar. Then I made an axle from another piece of piano wire. This is bungyed to the landing gear, similar to the real airplane. I also made a small axel wing, which is shown in the photo. The modification was really easy to do and I should think is doable to an existing, finished airplane.
