Enjoy this discussion so I can learn. The IMAC guys use gas but not the F3A guys, ok. Here is a Pattern Plane on Yahoo Japan Auctions with a Saito FG-36. Chuck

I would like to get one also. I like that it looks like a Pattern Plane, not a 3D plane. There are videos on youtube of the Primus 90 and Primus 50, and they can do F3A and 3D. I preference is more toward Pattern over 3D. Here are some pics. Chuck

RE: FG F1 Ferrari & Lauterbacher Super Cross
Here are pics of a large F1 car I found today on Yahoo Japan Auctions for 200,000 yen or about $2,040. The English in the auction text states "FG 1/5 F1" and "G260R". I had heard of the Serpent F180 car, but not the FG car. I suppose the FG is much larger? I did a Google search and found the FG web site http://www.fg-modellsport-gmbh.de/hauptseiten-bereiche/hauptseiten-layout/base03-formel1.html I like your FG F1 car! I'd like to see a pic one the FG F1 car next to a Serpent F180 car, to see the size difference. I like this youtube vid of Serpent F180 racing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IO40vv-MFE and this youtube vid of FG F1 cars racing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuSaaJI1anE Chuck

RE: MODE
Hello, Thanks for posting the Mode 2 Mode 1 question. I learned RC in Okinawa Japan back in 1980 and Japan as well as most of Asia is Mode 1. I learned with the Okinawa RC Club, not the American RC Club, so I learned using Mode 1. Over the years, my main excuse for not changing to Mode 2 is that I have Mode 1 stick instincts, such as if I must chop the throttle, etc. Mode 1 Pattern Plane flying, you have the tail of the plane on one stick, but I am not a good enough pilot to really know if that makes a difference. Mode 1 had been a royal pain for me as everyone else at the RC field can't test fly my plane or test hover my heli. There has been tons of advice and help, but no one can fly my stuff. It's the same as if you would show up at the field with a Single Stick transmitter. Simulators were the saving grace, Aerochopper and now RealFlight. In the 80's I remember tying a RC heli to a small step-ladder with a lazy susan if you can believe it. I actually had to purchase a separate transmitter (mode 2) and buddy cord for test flying purposes when the aircraft was expensive. Sure it would have been easier to just change to Mode 2, but I am hard headed. I have to admit that my refusal to change to the USA standard of Mode 2 has kept me from really improving my flying skills. Mode 1 is crazy for Heli 3D as I am now learning. The cyclic is on two seperate sticks. I am used to that an can fly all around and do nose in, but that is about it. I am trying to learn 3D now but all I can do for now is the basics like simple flips. Use RealFlight and watch a Instruction flight of Piro Flip with a Mode 1 transmitter displayed, it's crazy stick movements. Now, in 2008-2009, with the Spectrum Bind feature, someone else can fly my plane or heli no problem and also I can purchase a cheap electric heli from China with a Mode 1 cheap transmitter RTF. These heli's still need to be looked over and tweaked for proper setup. Also, I can finally ask a good pilot at the RC field if he would like to fly my plane. I used to have that out, "I wish you could fly my plane, but......" It was a thrill for me at the 2001 IRCHA Jamboreee just after the F3C World Championships concluded, that a member of the Japan F3C team and the F3C Pilot from New Zealand Aaron Williams flew my heli, both pilots fly using Mode 1. One of those moments where you see your aircraft doing flying you have never seen before! You say "So that is how it's supposed to be done!" On a side note, Congrats to Japan Mode 1 RC Heli Pilot Hiroki Ito on winning the 2009 F3C World Championship. He is one of the best in the world at 3D and now also a F3C World Champion, just like Curtis Youngblood did some years back. Videos of his flights and others at the F3C Worlds, as well as Videos of Ito's 3D flying are at http://www.runryder.com/ Click on the rrTV link for videos of helicopter 3D and F3C flying. There are some Youtube videos of Mode 1 3D where you can see the stick movements. Thanks, Chuck

RE: Okinawa 1985-1990 Rc Flying?
Hello, and thanks for this thread, I just found your thread today. I learned RC Flying at Okinawa back in 1980, when I was 22. I was stationed at Kadena AB twice (USAF Enlisted Aircraft Mechanic), 1980-1982 CIRF F-100 and J79 engines maint and overhaul squadon and 1990-1994 AF Special Operations C-130 and MH-53J. I was a member of the Okinawa club, I didn't fly in the American club. That is why I fly using Mode 1 still to this day. This is because I used to go to Miyazato Model Shop near Kadena AB, and ride with Mr Miyazato in his Toyota van to the old WW2 runway across from Torii Station. I can relate to the others who have posted on this thread about the runway, adjusting your landing due to cars or mounds of dirt. I crashed into the sugar cane many times. I look at Google maps of the area now and that old runway has a road running down the middle of it like a highway. I still remember going to a club meeting of the American club at the USO, and that is the day I first learned about Mode 1 and Mode 2. Over the years I never decided to change to Mode 2, as I have Mode 1 stick instincts since 1980. Okinawa is still my most favorite place to be stationed. I had so much fun flying RC, and I became quite the Pachinko player. I saw SR-71 takeoffs so many times. I think there is still a Miyazato working or owning a RC store in Okinawa: http://www.japanupdate.com/?id=7683 Okinawa RC Store site, but I can't understand the site, seems to be only RC cars: http://xhobby.ti-da.net/ I need to round up the photos and put them on this thread or in my gallery. One of them is in my Gallery now. Chuck

Scale or Not Scale Battleship and Carrier in Japan
I found this RC Battleship and RC Aircraft Carrier on Yahoo Japan Auctions. From a distance it looks like these are very highly detailed scale (like from a kit), where you would not see how the parts are put together. In the auction photos, you can see they are just a bunch of parts screwed together. Someone took a lot of time to put these together, like they are scratch built scale. On the close-up photos in the auctions, you can see the small scale details like ropes, ladders, and small aircraft and a small boat on the Carrier, and also the normal sized screws holding the model together. They each look awesome though! Scale but not Scale? I don't know if they have metal hulls, so I wonder if they would float. Each auction has plenty of photos, up close as well, so you can see the hulls are plates screwed together. On the auctions, there is no info on the RC gear used. Perhaps they are not even RC, but simply models. They were listed in the RC Boats category of Yahoo Japan Auctions. The Battleship auction states 145cm long (57 inch) and 300,000 yen ($3,1080). The Aircraft Carrier auction states 180cm (71 inch) and 300,000 yen ($3,1080). RE: What is it?
Hello, I saw your plane and I thought I would show you a photo of a Corsair Acro Knight 60 I was flying back in 1980 in Okinawa Japan. I started out on the IM Model Products Cessna 177 Cardinal in the photo. Eventually I was able to fly this Pattern Plane before I left Okinawa. Also in the photo is my instructor Mr Miyazato's Zero plane. The Corsair Acro Knight had an Enya 60x, and the fuselage was broken behind the wing and repaired. You can see it in the photo. The Acro Knight was destroyed while I was stationed at Edwards AFB CA. Edited this to upload a photo of the original Corsair, with it's designer Isao Matsui at a F3A championship in the late 70's, he later started IM Model Products, "IM" for Isao Matsui. This might be the Corsair Mk2, I don't know the difference between the Mk2 and the Acro Knight. Chuck

Hello Ryan, I have a CCRC club membership form sitting on my coffee table right now. I have always been interested in Pattern planes. I've liked to fly pattern planes, but I never flew in competition. I never did all the practice required. I never learned to build planes or Heli's either. I was flying the novice and sportsman class maneuvers, but never flying them correctly. Then for numerous reasons, I dropped out of RC for years and years, but flying Heli's or planes every once in a while. Chuck High Point, NC
