RE: Living and Flying is the Seattle Area?
ORIGINAL: luckymacy OK, this is an old thread but I'm visiting Renton area next week.
I have an app for my iphone called RCMaps. Think RCGroups had it or at least that was where I heard about it. Not great for my area (east of the Cascades) but it shows Renton as having a flying field at Coulon Park. It also lists Seatac Park Flyer Park and Riverview Playfield. North in the Bellevue area it shows MaryMoore flying field. Northwest Bellevue shows Northwest electric Flyers field. It shows Gasworks slope flying field in Seattle. It shows Smith Cove Park as a field in the Queen Anne Hill area. There is a Barn Owls indoor flying field near Lake Washington. It also shows View Ridge Park and Dahl Park. In the Boeing area it shows West Seattle Reservoir. Between Auburn and Sumner it shows Mt Baker Middle School in the Algona and Pacific areas. The app says the Mt Baker site would not be good on weekends as the field is used for football and soccer). It lists Flaming Geysers Flyers flying site in teh Flaming Geysers state Park. I have no personal knowledge of any of these fields and this app seems very useful for that but again I do not know how complete or up to date it is. Hope that helps.

RE: Would appreciate advice for give-away plane
Many of the park flyers would fit your requirements. You might also consider a small foamie as there is not much too them. They are light and a profile foamie could be repaired quickly. That does not fit you balsa frame and maybe wing requirement but would get him in the air in the park quickly.

RE: Magnetic building system
All Electronics sells a cabinet latch magnet at: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/MAG-123/CABINET-LATCH-MAGNET/1.html that are 3 for a buck. They appear to be the same as the ones that Jeff mentioned (and Paul Johnson recommended in his Airfield models article) at www.magnetsource.com/airfieldmodels/ Also I just ran into welding magnets at Harbor Freight. They have a big one (4" or so) for about $4 or 5 but they also have some smaller ones in a 4 pack for about the same $5 range price. They are shaped like an arrow head so you can set them at several angles. Magnetic building boards are great for my needs.
ORIGINAL: catflyer One quick question, where are you guys ordering the magnets from?? I can't seem to find a supplier of anything other than fridge magnets no matter what I type into Google. RE: Re-building Casburn King Lucky Fly
Johny Casburn has some nice birds back then. I had a Fun Fly. Unfortunately it only made 2 flights and taht was 1975. Mine suffered from either vibration or ghosting/interference as it went full throttle and straight down and made a very big divit in the ground from about 300 feet! All I got out of it was a box of splinters! That was when I was trying to learn to fly. Needless to say, it really shook me up! I did like the plane though

RE: Windecker Eagle
Flying Models does seem to give good service. At least they have the 2 times I have bought plans from them recently. I did receive the Windecker Eagle plans from them today. I ordered them on Friday and they arrived today in a roll tube (except they are not round any more). When I unrolled them I was a bit upset as the Windecker fuselage plan was very blotchy and black in spots but the next sheet was a good copy of it so they had appearently had the first page bleed badly but included it at no extra cost. The wing and tail sheets were ok though so no extra there. When I called them late last Friday the gal told me that the reason they do not list all their plans is because some are not very popular and others like the L19 plan from the early 1960's are not available because the mylar deteriorated so they can not make a copy. They apparently have not gone digital yet.
ORIGINAL: TFF FlyingModels is still very mom and pop; I have had to use the phone.
Any idea how often MAN has their sales? I only know of a couple in the past but do not watch it very closely and usually only see it when I see a thread about it on here. Do they have a regular schedule for sales (like this was for 4th of July)?

RE: Ace Foam Wings
The Ace foam wings were a popular item. RCM used them in a lot of the plans from their magazine. I built a 1/2A AeroCommander from the RCM plans as well as a couple of other RCM plans in the mid 70's time frame. I still see several posts asking where they can be obtained now. There are a couple of suppliers but the Ace foam wings are a good all around wing and are quick to assemble.
ORIGINAL: fargophil While cleaning out the shop I came across 3 sets of Ace tapered chord wings and one set of straight wings. RE: Telemaster planes
The senior Telemaster is a great flying plane. I have had mine since right after the article appeared in RC Modeler magazine and Hobbie Lobby started offering the kit over 40 years ago. What what I have read on these forums, the smaller Telemasters are not as forgiving. I do not think you can go wrong with a Senior Telemaster As far as which type of motor to select, it is mostly up to your personal preference. Electrics offer a lot as you do not run into issues getting them to start and no noise issues and no issue in obtaining fuel but you will need multiple batteries and ways to charge them safely at home and on the field. I also gather that flight time is less than it would be with typical glow fuel tanks. Battery technology has greatly improved. I do not yet own any electrics but do want to start as they seem to have a lot to offer but some people prefer the smell of burnt glow fuel and the sound of a glow motor. In short, pick the type of motor that you like but be aware of the short comings of both types.

RE: Building Boards
ORIGINAL: turbo.gst I have been using an adjust-jig for over 20 years. I use it slightly different than designed. I took the wing jig apart ( I made two halves). I use two of the rib stations for each wing rib. It holds it perfectly square with no rubber bands. I build both left and right wing panels in the same jig. Build one with the wing LE on one side and the other with the wing TE on that same side. Every rib is absolutely perfect in relation to the other side. I can use those known points to help incidence( especially nice on a bipe). I think it works better than the original. You can join the wing halves using the jig. I also have the fuse jig kit. I have used it, but it is not the best fuse jig I have seen. RCM had a design that I prefer.
I have been using an adjust-jig for over 20 years. I use it slightly different than designed. Are you sure you do not mean 500mah or 1/2 Ah? .5mah sounds very very low for any battery since most nicads and nimh charge at 1/10C or 250 ma. (for a 2500mah pack) for normal charging. Fast charging would be differnt but they would need to be monitored to make sure they did not overheat during charging.
