RE: 1/2a Biplane
ORIGINAL: GaryHarris Herr Pitts Special? Heck I dont know, I'm new to the 1/2A forum. Been lurking and today ordered a Herr Cloud Ranger. I saw a cool video of one once. [:)]
If it was my "Bud Light" Cloud Ranger on Youtube you can find some more info on it here in the 1/2a forums to include AUW with an OS .10LA. I just flew that plane last weekend and it still draws attention and surprise at how fast it is. PM me if you want some tips as to what I would do different if I were to build it again.

RE: DA 50-R wont rev...
I gave in and sent the engine to DA today. They should have it by next Friday via FedEx. Does anyone know what DA's turn around time is on average?

RE: 4 star 120 and zenoah g20
I will have to agree that the G20 will likely not be enough for the Four Star 120... It would fly but you would have to fly it on the wing as that engine wont get you out of trouble. That being said, it could be a great training tool as many of us are so used to overpowered planes we forget how to fly more than just the engine. I have a 4 Star 120 with an evolution 26-GT and it flies very well. while it does not have unlimited virtical it is a very spirited flier.

RE: DARE HOBBY KITS
I built the Dare Oreole as a 4 Channel RC. It was the first kit I eve built. I powered it with a AP Wasp .061 from Tower and put Hitech HS 81's in it and micro reciever with a 250 mah 4.8v battery pack. I could have easilly gotten away with smaller servos (HS 55) and it would have been easier if I had. I have another one of these kits new in the box I intend to build later now that I have a few builds under my belt so I can do it properly.

RE: Pitts or Ultimate
ORIGINAL: ChuckW If you want an Ultimate, look at the World Models .40 size. It is a great flying airplane, all usable hardware, good support from the distributor, etc. www.airborne-models.com While the covering scheme may be similar, it is not the same plane as sold by Nitro Planes.
I will second this motion. The World Models version is a lot better. It was my first bipe a few years back. The only negative I have on it is as with all World Models... Toughlon Covering is horrible stuff. But every WM plane I ever bought flew very well... I cannot say the same for the other manufacturer (I mean distributor).

I have the Evolution 35 GT in mine and it has great virtical performance. It does not blast out of a hover mind you. If you opted for the Evolution 40GX that actually weighs less than the 35GT you might be where you want to be. Or you couyld buy my 35 GT and I will spend your money on a 40 GX for myself[:D]

RE: DA 50-R wont rev...
I do not know how old the engine is as I am not the original owner. I've had it for about a year in the plane I bought it in and have flown it twice before I decided I needed to get this running correctly. Funny thing is it came on very suddenly. My first flight was fine... the second was a dead stick. It does have the WT-201 carb. I may just give in and let DA figure it out. I just want it running right.

RE: DA 50-R wont rev...
ORIGINAL: Ed It's not the ignition. Be careful that it's not too lean, and that you are not going thru the peak. The low end sounds correct. Try your high out to about 2 1/8 turns, and see if it does the same thing. If this fixes it, gradually turn it in until it peaks, and then back off about 300. Not all Carbs are created equal. [:D] Ed
Thanks, but I have been from 4 turns out to 1.5 turns out and everywhere inbetween with limited change in performance. The Tech at DA said that the high speed does not even open up untill you get to 3/4 open on the butterfly valve... since I cant get it that far open without it cutting out it makes it hard to tune the high end at all.

RE: DA 50-R wont rev...
ORIGINAL: Truckracer On the DA ignition, be sure your sensor cable is correctly plugged into the pigtail from the ignition box! If plugged backwards, the engine will run just fine but will cut off as you describe over a certain RPM level.
The tech at DA had me check that as well and it is plugged in correctly. He very quickly concluded that I needed to send it in to him. I am just hoping someone here will be able to recognize this problem and know how to fix it so I can get this plane flying.

RE: DA 50-R wont rev...
ORIGINAL: Tony Hallo Possibly overheating? Is the 23x8 too much prop?
It does it when it's cold or warmed up the same. The prop is right in the middle of DA's recomended range so I believe the prop should be fine. Infact when going from idle to the point it still runs there is no hesitation or slow spooling. It just falls off sharp when I get past about 6000 RPM. I also went ahead and took the carb back off and checked the screen... It's clean. I reset the needles to 1-7/8 and 1-5/8, I also put a 6.0v battery on the ignition and I still have the same problem. I wish I had a new ignition modual to try.

DA 50-R wont rev...
Help me figure this out please. I am new to DA's and this is a used engine. I have a DA50-R in an Aeroworks Extra 260 with a Mejzlik 23x8 prop. I have a problem keeping it running at full throttle. I can idle all day long and run in the mid range and get to about 6000 RPM then RPM decreases and eventually it dies if I advance the throttle beyond that. I figured it was a fuel problem so I reworked all the plumbing replacing all the fuel lines in and out of the tank. I got a carb rebuild kit that matched the numbers on the carb and thouroughly cleaned and reassembled the carb. I put everything back together and with a fully charged 4.8v NmHi 1500 mah ignition pack went to run it. I still have the same problem and there is little difference when I adjust the needle settings. I observed after I ran the engine today that the piece of fuel line that runs between the carb and the reed cage housing/carb spacer is completely full of fuel (is this normal? I thought it was a vent tube). I also wonder if I have enough voltage for the ignition. The side of the ignition says to use 4.8-6.0v with a 1200 mah minnimum. Should I be ussing a 6v instead? Is my ignition just broken all together? Additionally, what is a good starting point for the needle settings? Thank you for any help you can provide.

RE: eflite apprentic 15e 1st catastrophe
While I am unfamiliar with this paricular aircraft and I'm sure someone will chime in with your repair concerns, I will adress your other concern. The fact you are doing this with your son is wonderful. get the plane fixed and keep it up. It will be a memory he will cherish for a lifetime and dues paid by you that will come back 100 fold. These model planes... all of them will crash. More so when you are new at the game and a little less as you go. If you and your son are not members of a local club, concider joining one as there are many people who will give you face to face help and happily do so. The rewards of becoming a member typically make the nominal fee for membership unimportant. With that said, I downloaded the manual for the E-Flight Apprentice and see that it is a foam construction aircraft. Most if those planse use a silicone gel like material to keep the servos in place. this is the same as the clear RTV gasket sealer you can get at your local auto parts store. If the existing servos look like they are held in by a rubbery material then go to your local auto parts store and ask for clear RTV gasket sealer and get that kid flying again... and yourself too. Welcome to RCU.

RE: c.g. phoenix super decathlon
Do not confuse tail heavy with unstable. The Decathlons need to be flown a bit faster than your average trainer. If they get slow they will snap and fall out of the sky in a hurry. I just offer this up as a possibility since you stated your CG was at 85mm. I fly mine with an OS 55ax and an 11x7 3 blade MAS. This is my second Decathlon. My first died a horible death about 3 years ago as my second plane. I thought it was the most ill mannered plane on the planet. Now I fly a wide variety of planes so I decided to get another Decathlon as to not allow it to kick my six[;)]

RE: Battery gets very hot.
Well, I got a higher C rated battery. The XPower DualSky 1700 mah 35C. My battery did not even warm up but I was unable to take it to full throttle. The motor stopped as soon as I got to full throttle. So I replaced the ESC with a larger capacity one ~34-45A Castle Creations I had laying around (I wish they would mark those things). Anyway it did not make a difference. The motor ran the same and quit at full throttle. I can tell I need to ballance my rotating mass as there is a high frequency vibration at peek RPM now and it is spinning noticably higher RPM.

Well I just swapped the ESC and battery. I installed another Castle Creations ESC that I am not sure what the Amp rating is but its bigger[:D] Must be better right? The battery is an XPower DualSky 1700 mah 35C/2C The prop spun noticably faster but at full throttle the motor quit. I back down to the bottom and I can run it again but if I go to full it just quits. I guess I am pushing to much through the motor now...Attached are pictures of the plane I am talking about.

RE: Need plane suggestions
I recently got a Carl Goldberg 60.5 in Ultimate (just smaller than the GP one you are lokking at) and installed a 35cc gasser on it. It's a great combo so your ZDZ 40 on the GP should be fun. My wing loading is about 25oz/sqft which is 3oz higher than Goldbergs advertized weight and it still flies great.

RE: Electric pro?
This plane has already hit ~110-120mph but it is running on a dangerous edge for the electronics and the airframe at that time (that is when the wings folded) I think I have the airframe set up to take it, now I want to get the electronics up to snuff. Remember it takes a lot less to get a 1 lb to go fast than a large turbine plane.
