RE: smallest Gas engines
I had a buddy put an NGH 17cc on a 40 sized Space Walker. It was a BRICK. It did fly but did not look like fun. The plane had to have an excesive amount of weight added tothe tail to ballance. My sujestion would be to increase the size of the planes and engines you are looking at unless it is a larger trainer. You will not be happy with the performance of a 9cc-17cc on a 40 size aerobatic/sport plane. 20-26cc on 60 size planes seem to be the blending point where some airframes are still not suitable for the gas conversion but others are.

I think your right. I have had good luck finding the needle valve you have in the past. I may even have one at home. Look up "Hayes Hobbies" In Fayetteville NC and ask them if they have one. I have purchaced one like yours there before. Ask for Alan and tell him Phil sent you[:D]

Your .70 FS will be adiquate to fly the plane. It won't be a power house by any means but I tend to over power everything. Yours should be pretty scale.
I was looking at this as well. I fear they just moved the power band to the upper range meaning even more "spool up" to get into it. This type of power is great for speed planes but not 3D and general sport flying.

It's hard to tell from the picture but with that and your flight description I would venture to guess that the tail was coming apart shortly after take off. EDIT// What engine did you have installed on the Supe Box Fly? It is probably repairable. You would be suprised how many parts are available for even older engines.

Dial in some more Expo ~50-60%. I max the throw on most of my control surfaces and never use the manual's "sujested" throws. I then tune in my expo to get the desired "feel". Too twitchy is not fun but sluggish is not desired either for me.

RE: First R/C airplane flight and crash
ORIGINAL: Mister Mulligan You are right. Some Buddy Box training would be a good idea. I don't know anyone with R/C airplane experience. I could join a club. What bums me out, is that on this last flight, I had removed the aileron servo because it's servo arm was bumping against the servos in the fuselage. I think I could have gotten the airplane to turn with the ailerons. By the way, I checked after the accident and they were still locked in neutral. And you are right about ''a trainer''. I didn't realize how ''hot'' this ship was. I think something with a .15 or .19 engine would have been better. Yes, I know a 25FP is mediocre compared to a lot of other R/C planes. Now that I think about it, the R/C flying that I did years ago, that plane had a Fox .19 or something like that.
Mr Mulligan, I live about two hours south of you. I'm in Afghanistan right now but will be back in November. I instruct at my club and would be happy to help you out if you so choose. Might even be able to help you out with an airframe if you don't replace yours first. What you will find is a bigger plane is easier to learn on. If your interested, let me know and I will shoot you my cell number in a private message so you can contact me in November.

DLE 55-RA
I thought I knew what engine I was going to buy until I found this. http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/dle_engines/dleg0455.html What do you guys think? I was going to get a DA-60 but this rear exhaust has peaked my interest. I have one DLE product (20cc) and am happy with it so far. And this 55 even comes with an angle plug and a pitts muffler. If the stand offs are the right length that would just be another bonus. I could not ask for a less expensive way to get my 50cc Ultimate together and still get good performance and light weight. EDIT// Just noticed that both are advertised to have 5.5 HP with the original 55 @ 7500 RPM and the 55-RA @ 8500 RPM. Not sure just moving the power band up in the RPM spectrum is what I want for 3D. Lower end grunt is more the ticket.

RE: House of Balsa - Chea Pass - Stick
I was just looking at this kit the other day. I have an OS .20, an OS .15 CV-A and a modified OS .15 CV-X (Essentially the Ducted Fan OS .15) I want a truely fast plane so I was thinking I would use my CV-X mod engine. I was also thinking of milling down the wing thickness a milimetter or two for less frontal drag. Landing gear may also be excluded. Your post just sold another Chea-Pass (gotta love that name) kit! Did you install the diheadral brace upside down for anheadral or is that an optical illusion in the pictures?

RE: Alpha Trainer Problems
An oily plane is the norm with glow power so you are most likely safe. Never try to tune it so you do not get oil out of the exhaust. You will be buying a new engine shortly there after. You can lean it a click or two at a time. Unfortunately it is a slow process. Once you get the hang of it and learn the engines you will be able to tune it on the ground. As stated, it is complex to describe it in words and is best done in person. If you needed to tune the "low end" it would have to be done in person as it is far more sensitive. Do not try to get peak RPM out of it. Just lean it a bit and run the throttle up on it. Repeat the process untill you get a reasonable transition from idle to full throttle. After you get a few engines in your squadron then you can learn to peak an engine.

RE: Alpha Trainer Problems
It is very likely a tunning issue. Unfortunately we can't tell which way you need to go with what you've said. If it's to lean (not enough fuel), the engine will start to get too hot and do what you describe and if it's to rich (too much fuel) it will do what you describe. At a safe altidude and location that you can perform a dead stick landing from when the engine is lagging, smoothly yet somewhat quickly advance the throttle to full. Observe your exhaust. If you get a more than normal amount of smoke and probably a sputter... it's to rich (turn your needle in, clockwise, two clicks and retest). If it dies without any smoke, it's likely to lean (turn your needle out, counter clockwise 2 clicks and retest). Aditionally, what does your plane look like after you land. Is it absolutely covered in oil? Is it as dry as a bone in the desert? Do you have a constant yet faint smoke trail behind your plane when flying at higher to full throttle settings? At mid throttle, it is hard to see the smoke.
