RE: Magnum 108 Tuning for more Power
You can get more power by changing the timing on the exhaust and intake and run a tuned pipe, however, due to the poor metallurgy of magnum engines the life span will be short. I once changed the crank timing on a magnum engine with a no.11 exacto knife.
ORIGINAL: abacro Gentelmen, your obviously well read up on things so my question to you is this. Didn't iether of you ever see the hp ratings on the 40 FSR's when introduced? I QUOTE FROM OS " These 40's have more power and thrust then ANY 60 manufactured to date! And as long as i've had mine and flown them,i have NO doupt about that statement. Even to this very date,i haven't found very many 40's through 65's that have the same power! I'll keep flying them till they die,but i'm sure i'll probly pass on befor the 40's do. Keep flying till ya die!
Put an APC 10/6 on that 40 and you will see what we are trying to tell you. Let us know what your tach results are.

RE: Would this work in a plane?
Looking at the bore and stroke it looks like a k&b. Do yourself a favor and get a OS 15 la. It has more power than the K&B 18 and does not have the problems you are facing like the pull start and other problems. BTW an 18 is 3.0 not 2.85.

Looks like a winner. It will probably only fly about 200 mph. ( at half throttle). I have to see this one fly, the last one you had was scary fast.

You might go back and review some of your past post regarding the rpm you were getting with the 91 fx and the 12/8 prop. Have a nice holiday.

In addition, adding a header with the correct length will add rpm to the non piped engine.

Because the SS Jett 40 came with an SS muffler and a Nelson muffler was the only short muffler I had on hand. Worked fine.

RE: Advice for speed - Jett 40 Sport
The SS Jett 40 is a very strong engine. With a nelson Q 500 muffler it will out run the sport Jett 50 by over 1200 rpm. It will turn an 8x8 9.25 19400 on a good day. Strong engine considering it only a 40.

Nope. I do know that some Master Airscrew 11/7 props will turn about the same rpm as an APC 11/5. They must be marked wrong.

RE: Props-More Myths Busted
In general, thrust at static conditions seem to be only propeller dia. and rpm dependent. Pitch for what ever reason does not seem to provide any more thrust at any given rpm. As to to much thrust, on a 40 size fun fly the rudder was blown off in a flat spin. On a 25 size fun fly the servo gears stripped out in flight on the elevator. The modified OS 28 was putting out 6 1/2 lbs thrust with a 10/3 apc prop spinning 17000 rpm with a jett tuned muffler. The plane was a little over 2 1/2 lbs.

RE: Props-More Myths Busted
Your point about noise and safety are correct. My point about thrust and tip speed I believe are also correct. I have been testing different props and rpms for over a month trying to get something with good throttle response and good thrust. I found out the hard way you can have to much thrust. Still looking for the right combination.

If the price of model airplane engines kept up with inflation, yes they would quite expensive. My latest water bill was 110$. Could have bought an OS 46 ax for the price of my water bill!

Lets see. A 7.4 inch dia. prop used on a good Jet or Nelson unloaded to about 27000 in the air has a tip speed of about 600 mph. Sure don't look to be inefficient to me.
ORIGINAL: DarZeelon
ORIGINAL: MyWay The best thrust can be achieved by picking a prop with a tip speed of about 600 mph.
Wrong! That would give you the worst noise, as air-flow around the blades becomes trans-sonic and even supersonic at some points, over the blade-tips. Prop manufacturers limit their permitted RPM, so the limit of Mach 0.7, or 475 mph

Looks like opinions differ but no one has any facts to back up there opinions. I will make an effort to obtain wind velocities with different pitch props running the same rpm. Can't find any cheap airspeed indicators that will work over 100 mph. Anyone know of a good one that will read over 100 mph?
