RE: Installing a Bronze Bushing in a Saito 180 Rod?
Have you considered using a K&S metric brass tubing? I think that the wall thicknes is .5 mm and they probably have 9 mm OD so the ID will be 8 mm. I do not think that the brass will be inferior to the 6061T6 aluminum that most conrods are made from in terms of durability.

RE: Diesel starting fluid
ORIGINAL: franchi Hi Again: I looked up Davis prices for fuel divered to my home and this is what I found. Fuel $14.95 per qt. Shipping $10.00 Fuel shipping charge $6.00 Total $75.80 per gallon Tower Hobbies Fuel $12.49 per quart Shipping $12.50 Handling charge $12.50 Total $74.86 per gallon Is my math inaccurate? This seems to be very costly for fuel! Franchi Franchi Something appears to be wrong with your math. I just went on Tower's web site and tried to order 1 quart of Davis fuel. The cost was $12.45 for the fule + $9.95 shipping. Total was $22.40. That's it! I assume that like Earl and Martin said: if you buy 4 quarts you will pay less than $25 shipping. On top: if you buy $150 worth - they wave the shipping. For $150 you will get approx. 10 quarts which is 2 1/2 gallons. Just my 2c Joshua
RE: How do you know when your fuel is too old?
If your fuel was in a factory sealed metal can before you opened it for use - it can last for years and years. I have many gallons of DDD fuel that are over 15 years old and work flawlessly. If the can has been opened before and sat for awhile, do what the last poster suggested. It wll tell you quickly whether you still have adequate Ether, Kerosine, and Oil content.

RE: Zenoa Diesel Engine Conversion
Thanks for the description of the diesel glow plug. Your idea is intriguing. A possible way to try it may be to machine a standard glow head to increase compression and than try it as fixed CR diesel with diesel fuel of course. This can be done without sacrificing an expensive diesel head. From my experience, once a diesel engine is set properly, one seldom have to change the compression setting - you may only need to open the NV intially for the engine to start. If this is a shared experience, than having an optimized fixed CR diesel will still offer the substantial benefit of higher torque and reduced fuel consumption, espec ially on large engines for which diesel conversion heads are not readily available. I am thinking here of my MDS 2.18 and OPS Maxi 30 and 60 engines. This may work on some engines possibly with as little as no head shims.

RE: Zenoa Diesel Engine Conversion
The rectangular horizontal piece that is mounted on top of the cylinder is not part of the original engine. The top fin may have had to have a flat machined into it to accomodate that block. I have no idea what function the round part that is screwed into that block fulfils. The engine appears to be rather small, looks like the 26 cc. The seller stated that the intended airplane outgrew this engine so my guess would be that it was intended for a military drone.

RE: Zenoa Diesel Engine Conversion
That is indeed very intriguing. If it is a diesel than I suppose it is fixed compression which makes me wonder how it works, unless - they have increased the compression ratio. Where did you find it? Such experiments are typical of small companies who are in the drone engine business.

Fox 45 Large Case - I need a Diesel Head
Hi Guys I just bought a used Fox 45 large case and ran it in my shop today to get the hang of it. 8,400 rpm on a Top Flite 13X5 running slightly rich. The 13X5 is my benchmark propeller for CL flying. What a delightful American made jem of an engine. I never paid much attention to Fox engines in my youth, but now that I am older (but not neccessarily smarter) I am discovering and falling in love with them. Anyway - now I want to convert the engine to diesel (of course). Does anyone have a Davis head for sale by any chance? Joshua

RE: ST 4500 on Diesel
4,700 rpm with the Menz 24-12. That compares well to Mike Billington's finding when he tested the engine 20 years ago. He ran a Punctilio 24-12 at around 4900 rpm on 5% nitro. To my best knowledge, the Menz is a lot more substantial piece of lumber than the Punctilio. Joshua

RE: ST 4500 on Diesel
OK, with the original ST 4500 carb I recorded 7,700 rpm tops. It will run reliably at about 6500 but fuel consumption at WOT was way up. I would estimate abut 2 oz/min. I am going to reinstall the Menz 24-12 and test once more. Will be back shortly. Joshua

RE: ST 4500 on Diesel
bogbeagle I could idle the engine down to 1000 rpm and hold it there all day long. Transition to wide open is instantanous every time. Not even a hint of hesitation. Fuel consumption at WOT is about 1 1/2 oz/min. Earl, Dave I do not have a ST 2300 carb but found a ST 3000 carb in my collection which is the same size as the 4500 carb. Lucky me though - it has a OEM restrictor in it so I assume that it is more or less similar to the 2300 one :). Ran the engine again and recorded 6200 rpm. Next test is going to be with the original 4500 carb. Same Zinger 22-10 kept with all carbs for proper reference and comparison. Joshua

RE: ST 4500 on Diesel
Hi Fellas I am going to revive this subject, please don't get mad:) I finally ran my ST 4500 on diesel this morning and wanted to share the results. I broke the engine in as a glow on Super T fuel and 22-10 Zinger prop. At the end of the break in I ran it wide open (albeit slightly rich) and recorded 6000 rpm. Switched heads to DDD (brand new) and installed a ST 60 carb based on Dennis's experience. After three 6 oz. tanks, the best result I got was steady 5700 rpm with the Contra Piston open 2 1/8 turns from bottom, needle valve at 3 - 3 1/2 turns open. I also tried a Menz 24-12 and got 4000 rpm. To be honest - I am a little disappointed. Expected better than that. What do you guys think? Attached are a couple photos of the handsome beast. Joshua

RE: MDS 2.18
G'day Mike Thanks for your input. Pretty much supports what others said: mostly carb related issues which is nothing unheard off with other engines as well except perhaps OS and Super Tigre which have exceptionally user friendly carbs. Do you recall what kind of fuel was used? That seems to be the second most important issue with these engines. Joshua

RE: MDS 2.18
Martin I just got off RCGroups - engines thread after doing a search on MDS engines. I cannot say I was surprised with what I found, and one guy summed it up very well. I am quoting: "When I started flying a gentleman at our club flew nothing but MDS and had the same or better reliability than any other group of engines being used. IMHO there are two kinds of engine people. 1. Don't bother me with the details I wanna fly. 2. I want to understand when my engine is "talking" to me and enjoy the mechanical bent to the whole process. This is not meant as criticism IMHO one group is not better than the other they just have different needs. If you are in group one stick to the major name brands built for the "everyday" flier. If you are in the second group you shouldn't shy away from an MDS." I belong to group #2 and may be prejudiced, but - believe that most nay sayers have not tuned too many engines properly in their modelling career. That realization came pretty loud and clear going through the postings. It reminded me a guy who was lamenting his ST 4500 was going through 32 ozs. tank in 8 minutes. At the end he admitted that he runs 30% nitro and 20/20 fuel in a TF P-51 clocked at 125 mph. To me - that clearly demonstrates utter ignorance! I will bench test my MDS 2.18 and report the results. RE: MDS 2.18
Thank you so very much Dennis for the well informed and reasoned explanation. I truly appreciate it, and, it seems to re-enforce my opinion that the product was not as much at fault as the intended (mostly) no brain end users. It is probably one of the major reasons why electrics displace internal combustion almost entirely.

I have one and the metal sure does not look any different than any of my other engines. Pe - when you say you are not sure the matallurgy is up to the task of diesel conversion - do you have first hand knowledge or just guessing? To the best of my knowledge MDS is based in the Ukraine and is sort of a reincarnation of a well known former soviet engine maker. They sure have the know how given the soviets track record in sciense and engineering? Just my 2c. Joshua

Quick Question Fellas: I have a Davis Diesel head that is marked as fitting the OS 60FSR / OS 60FP. Do you know if it will also fit the 65LA? I believe all of these have 24 mm bore but do not know if the mounting holes for the head are on the same CD diameter. I also have a Webra Speed 61 head that is 24 mm bore but a different mounting diameter. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Best Regards Joshua
