Airtronics M-12
I contacted Airtronics and they either had no information or didn't want to disclose it. Their response was "we do not have any details on the M-12". I was wondering when the new M-12 Surface Transmitter is going to be available. Anyone heard anylthing?

RE: MBX5R Help...
Well I'm really guessing at this point. As you can see the instructions are somewhat vague and since I built it about 4 years ago, I don't remember either way as to whether I put it in or not. I know when I took it apart there was just a faint remnant of something there that just crumbled in my fingers almost like build up of dirt or something. Certainly nothing as large or hard as the collet so if it was in, it disintegrated.

MBX5R Help...
This may seem like a dumb question or you may think I'm dumb for not knowing and maybe so, but I could use a little help. A few years ago I built a Mugen MBX5R buggy with an OS V-Spec .21 engine. Recently it developed some problems so I took it apart. It was quite worn. I decided rather than rebuild it, due to the extensive useage it had, that I'd just replace it with the same exact engine. I commenced to put in the new engine. I had a complete flywheel assembly that I had purchased some time ago and never used so I started to put that on the new engine. In the kit is a tapered cone part # C0702B. I didn't see that on the old engine, but second guessing myself I wondered if I put it together wrong in the first place so I went to the instructions which are quite vague. It only says: "Use C0702B when not attaching to the engine". Hmmm, what the heck does that mean? Does anyone have a clue on whether I should use this part or not? http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/685/mbx5rengineinstalationi.jpg/

RE: hpi savage xl or traxxas t-maxx/revo 3.3
Whoa guys. He said he is "new" to nitro and learning. You send him back to electric? He wants to step up a level. Then you send him to CEN???? OMG talk about problem prone, with lousy support and not user friendly! This may be a Savage site, but I have a CEN and an XL. Driven a REVO many times. For a beginner to nitro why not the XL? Yes there are some issues, but if you just want to bash and have a good time along with learning the hobby the XL is great. You can learn how they are built, there are many sites with parts and advice, and it's pretty rugged. As someone more experience hobbyists than I, told me a few years ago when I got my XL, don't be afraid of all the plastic. A lot of times plastic is more durable that metal. I've beat the crap out of my XL, did some cheap mods (thus you learn and improve at the same time), and it keeps running. I don't think it is particularly hard to tune either. So my vote is definitely the XL. Welcome and good luck.

RE: New to the hobby. buggy or truggy?
Well two schools of thought on the Kit or Built. I feel that if you are 1) a beginner and want to learn, 2) have the time to spend, and 3) want to understand the inner workings right down to each diff then building it yourself is the best way to get educated. On the other hand if you are impatient and just want to get out there running then having as much of it as possible already done is a better way to go. Personally I am so glad I built a kit, but I don't think an already built was an option back then. Either way I suggest that you take photos before it hits the ground and after each upgrade or mod. You'll like them to refer to later on. I actually took photos during the assembly. As for the engine I have had great luck with an OS V-Spec. Main thing is take care of it. Finally I'm sure all the advice here is good. You will find that a lot of opinions are based on that individuals experience with that particular item and they may all be correct to some extent. One thing for sure, it's a great hobby and you'll have lots of fun.

RE: New to the hobby. buggy or truggy?
Well I got to put my 2 cents in here. A few years back when I was getting into Nitro, this forum and the subscribers were immensely helpful. I had only old school electric experience and never even driven a nitro vehicle. Since then my experience has increased 1000%. Do all my own repairs and mods & can tune an engine well. I ended up with a Mugen MBX5R and couldn't be happier. I've driven the heck out of it and although I've had to do repairs, (not counting upgrades and mods) they've been warranted given the beating it's taken. In my area the LHS's suck. Pretty much don't have parts for anything worthwhile so I order on line and the reputable sites get you the parts quick and cheaply. My advice is read, learn, and do things yourself. O'Donnell has a good rep, Mugen is my favorite, and I agree with Jmaxey51 in that AE doesn’t seem to be a predominant player, but they have been around forever. While these guys may have more expertise than me, I've done quite a bit in the past few years and I don't think I'm steering you wrong. Good luck!

Yup...air leak around carb neck and pinch bolt. Also bad servo. Fixed it myself. Should have know better than to think CEN support/repair would solve it. Not impresed with them or their product. Thanks for your suggestion. Not sure why I didn't think of that myself and do the repair. Lazy I guess. Thanks again. Thinking about a Losi XXL or Revo 3.3.

CEN Genisis Engine Revs Out Of Control
Hope someone can help me. I purchased a used CEN Genisis truck last fall. My guess is that it is about 4 - 5 years old. I was told it had only been run 7 tanks, but I seriously doubt he told the truth. When I got it started it starts to idle and then goes into high revolutions. Blipping the throttle doesn't help. The slide is only open 1mm and even when it goes into high rev the slide is still almost closed. The linkage isn't moving but the engine is still revving. I sent it to CEN. Had to call them to get a status report. At first they couldn't find it, then they said it was on the way back. They charged me $55 (plus the shipping both ways) and said it was fixed. I started it up and it was like they never touched it. Called them back and they had no clue, no records, nothing. Useless support. Anyone have any suggestions other than wasting more money on it or throwing it in the trash bin?

RE: How to mount RC's on Rack/Wall?
Oh sorry. Didn't meant to be sarcastic. I thouight you were talking about a plain shelf. Yes I just got you picture. That may work well. You see the problem is that I have long stretch of cabinets on the back wall, them I am installing a radiant tube heater on the side wall that is also 10' long, then what is left is the access door to the house and the final wall for rakes, etc. So my 2 car garage is quickly getting smaller.

RE: How to mount RC's on Rack/Wall?
Gee why didn't I think of that? Really...I appreciate the quick response, but if it were just a shelf I was looking for, I wouldn’t have wasted the post. Let me be slightly clearer: I have limited "wall" space due to the amount of cabinetry that is "already" on the wall. You see I have tried to put together as complete a work space as possible so consequently I have a 10' run of both lower and "upper" cabinets that are to be used for both everyday tools (wood working & mechanical) and RC work. Couple that with a large rack filled with hand power tools and the other normal garage/yard tools, and "wall space" is pretty much used up on the back of this 2 car garage. Having said that what I meant to say was that I am looking for something more unique such as maybe a vertical rack with narrow shelves mounted at a 45 degree angle and a hook of some sort so the cars could stack up the rack and be lifted on and off easily when needed while using not more wall space than the width of a single car. Making something like that out of wood was my first idea, but I just thought that "maybe" with all the "experience" out there in the RC world and this being one of the best RC forums I’ve seen, that someone "just might" have a better idea other than a SHELF! DUH!

Get Rid Of Body Mounts Posts...
Has anyone come up with a way to, or found a company with a product to elminate body mounting posts on buggies? I've got an MBX5R and I've broken the nose off of three bodies. The hole for the body mount post is too close to the front of the car which makes the nose too weak and they break off. I thought of either moving the post back some how or trying to come up with another way to attach the next body. Any suggestions welcome.

Well this thread keeps popping up cause it's such a popular subject. I totally agree with DaveG55. Personal preference.! As others have said as well, you need to have your engine tuned. If not you'll be pulling or pressing the button forever. PS'ers getting blisters? Try wrapping your handle with some pipe insulating tape you can get at Home Depot. It is rubberized with peel off adhesive on one side and gives a soft feel. Savage 5.9 w/ PS, yup! I've got one on my XL. Worked well for quite a while, but just recently the cord is pulled out and not going back in so I guess I broke the spring. Maybe I'll fix it or maybe I'll put the Roto back on, or just maybe I'll mod the darn thing so I can use my bump box which I like best of all. Personal preferance will prevail.

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
Hey guys I wasn't being snooty when I mentioned my MBX5R, rather I meant that not having had any other nitro's before the Mugen, I was a little spoiled and didn't have a good range of vehicles to compare the XL to. I'm still new to nitro so every new vehicle is a learning experience. That's why I revised my opinion to an "A" after I had some time to work and play with the XL. You're right, it's target market is for those that can't afford to drop $1000 down without electronics on a vehicle. Mostly the point of my last comments were to express that having learned the XL's weaknesses, it was fun finding out how to fix them.
You just have to tweak the thing so it runs right. This could be HPI's engineers not being on the ball, or more so I think when you consider all the people that like the Savages, that HPI left these things undone to give us something to feel useful about.
Admittedly I was hasty in my judgment at first, but like I said I hadn't had enough to compare it to. It's really a good truck and I'd recommend it to anyone that wants to have fun and still wants to be able to customize it to their preferrence.

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
SAVAGEJIM, sounds like you've been into Savages for a while. I've not had the pleasure (or not) of tearing one apart yet. Yes my Mugen kit is quality and that was what made it hard to adjust to the XL, but the Mugen was quite a bit more expensive. But I had to put things in perspective, so that's why I also understand others that say I may have been a little harsh on the Savage. On the Diffs, if you have any tips on avoiding problems with the Savage feel free to post 'em. The brakes do need more help, but that mod I did on the throttle servo certainly gave it brakes, I mean you roll up fast and jam 'em too hard and you'll flip it over nose first. You have to be a little gentle, but what a difference. After you adjust to it you can do a whole more, now that there are real brakes. So you're right, dual brakes with the servo mod would round it off well. I have an Airtronics M11 with Spetrum 2.4 module so that's what I did, put a Spektrum receiver in and programmed it into the M11. I saw that some RTR truck (can't remember which one) comes with a multi-model programable radio, but for my money, make it a few bucks cheaper and let me use my own electronics. I'd just as soon be happy even having to get my own servos. Again I have to keep things in perspective. Some might welcome the radio included in the box if they are trying to get in without a lot of cost. I just wonder why HPI doesn't go the route that Associated does with some of their vehicles. Like the B4 buggy. You can get it RTR or beefed up kit form without electronics. You would also think with all the experience HPI has that they could fix that Half Tank Lean Issue. The mod I used was quick and easy, but all the other companies don't have that problem so I'm sure they could come up with a solution that's even better. Thanks for your thoughts.

No problem bud. We all do that from time to time. Imagine how upset I was when I first got the truck and...it didn't run for crap, no wheelies, wouldn't start, and then the suspension fell apart (no one told me you have zip tie the bumper arms together to keep the suspension pins from falling out), then the servo quit working. Bummer. Now that I've tweaked it all over the place it's really a good truck. BTW I put an Associated Fuel Primer Pump Bulb in the fuel line and changed out the Roto-Start for a Pull Starter. Took it out today (It's 30 Degrees here) and would believe it fired up on the first pull?

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
Ok here is the verdict. First of all
A new wrinkle...the steering servo is defective. While breaking it in I noticed the servo acting up. I plugged it into the throttle jack on the receiver and it is still the same servo acting wonky. It jitters and then moves to the full left. An email to HPI support gave a message not to expect an answer for several days. A call to them said it's better to leave a message which I did at 10:30 AM EST (they are PST). At 2PM I called and waited 10 minutes to speak to someone who was more concerned about warning me that if it got wet they wouldn't cover it. So I shipped to them an hour later.
HPI sent me a new servo, no questions asked. I broke in the XL and ran a few tanks through it and just decided that it wasn't what I expected nor did it perform as advertised so I was just going to keep it a year and pedal it. Then I started doing some investigating to see if anyone else was unhappy as well. To my surprize I found that it is true...RTR really means Ready To Rebuild! So for anyone new to Savages (at least the XL which I can speak on first hand) I have listed some complaints below and the Mods I found to fix the problem. The Verdict: A. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] You just have to tweak the thing so it runs right. This could be HPI's engineers not being on the ball, or more so I think when you consider all the people that like the Savages, that HPI left these things undone to give us something to feel useful about. Here we go (and I know some of you veterans may already be aware, but it's good to rehash sometimes anyway) 1. The Roll Bar/Engine Protector thingy that they fail to give instructions for. [sm=idea.gif] I used the extra body mount, wire tied it to the chasis, and used some body clips to position it. Works fine. 2. That silly Half Tank Lean Issue that evidently Savages have been plagued with for a few models. [sm=idea.gif] Open the fuel tank lid, stick a short piece of antenna tube in the hole on the bottom side of the tank lid, attach a piece of fuel line over that and run it to almost the bottom of the tank. Probem fixed. (Some have said that it doesn't always work, but given the night and day difference it made for me, I have to conclude that those who say it doesn't work just didn't install it correctly) 3. The Brakes "SUCK" and the throttle is difficult to adjust to get optimum power. I could never get it to do wheelies which really made me mad. After all that's half the reason I bought it. [sm=idea.gif] You take the throttle servo arm off, take it apart, use a Dremel tool to cut the metal ring half way down and 6-8mm long from the left side. That's it. Put it back together and it's fixed. First the brakes work great (like they are supposed to). You can almost flip it over nose first it you try. Second the throttle is now free to do what it is intended to do...make that truck scream. Now I'm doing wheelies all over the place and it's as fast as they said. And I never toucht the carb screws. Maybe some of you were able to get the performance out it you expected, but I just couldn't. This Mod is so cool, I recommend it to all Savage owners. 4. The Antenna keeps coming out of the hole in the radio box. A lot of people have complained about shearing them off. [sm=idea.gif] Buy an antenna mount kit from a Mugen MBX5 (or 6)R. It has a little spring mount that allows the antenna to bend over sideways without breaking. You have to drill a couple holes through the chasis bar and radio box. Then get some sort of plastic mount to attach it to the frame. (I used an extra piece from another kit that I didn't need that already had a couple holes in the side and a hole in the top to mount the spring) Then I drilled a small hole through the radio box and the side frame, ran the antenna wire through it and up the antenna tube, and I used Shoo Goo to seal the hole where the wire came through the radio box and the old antenna tube hole. Now the antenna tube is mounted outside the radio box and is not an issue when you take the radio box cover on and off. The antenna is free to bounce around from side to side. 5. The truck flips over easily on turns or sideways slides. [sm=idea.gif] Take a pair of scissors (body shears work great) and cut off one or two rows of knobbies all the way around on the outside of each tire. This allows the tires to roll on the sides a little and slide without so much grab. Hope these Mods are helpful to anyone new or unaware. For those who already knew about them, sorry for wasting your time, but I just thought it would be good to finish this thread on a positive note and and pass on some of the things I learned.

RE: A Traxxas Revo 3.3 or a Savage XL???
Guys, I'm not sure how I got to this thread. I was looking for info on upgrading the brakes on a Savage XL and then I began to read how you feel about, well a lot of things so I had to respond. I guess you'd say I'm new to nitro since I got my first buggy 2 years ago (Mugen MBX5R), but I've been in RC cars for 20 years. Had electric all that time. So here goes: 1. Doing Research; I wanted to buy a MT to bash so I posted "Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?" in Monster Trucks Forum with a poll on 6 trucks. (Sorry, I know there's a shortcut to get you there, but I hadn't figured out how to put it in.) As you will see the Losi LS2 and the Savage XL were almost equal. So I bought the Savage XL 2. Savage Good or Bad; My son has had an HPI Savage 25 and he loves it, but he just plays. He runs about a gallon a year through it. Based on that and my post/poll results I bought the Savage XL. BIG mistake. The radio is crap so I put in a Spectrum receiver and programmed it into my Airtronics M11. I’m already looking for brake replacements (any suggestions) because the originals suck. I have not run a gallon though it, how about only 8 tanks. First I noticed that the carb was adjusted so that when you gave it full throttle you got half throttle on the carb slide. So I couldn't figure out why it was so slow when everyone said it was supposed to be fast. Makes you wonder who is building these things. I fixed that and then steering servo started acting up. I called HPI and the guy spent more time telling me how good they were in determining if I'd run through water or not than giving me the process to send it in. Thankfully they sent me a new servo. Then the receiver battery wouldn't hold a charge so I just replaced it. We're talking about a new truck with only a few tanks run through it. I shutter to think what will break after I've run it, say 3 or 4 more days. From what your comments state, I can look forward to a lot of fixin’. I will say the guy who said “RTR means Ready To Rebuild was correct. I may be spoiled with my Mugen, but I've had it 2 years and yes things break, but I've run the crap out of it and repairs have been minimal. I guess I expected too much out of the XL, but it was partially my fault because you do get what you pay for. 3. Starting this post, etc.; In reading I see that some of you get frustrated with other's comments. I have to say that I appreciate all the comments and RC Universe is the best in my opinion. There's an old adage, "There is no such thing as a dumb question, just a dumb person for failing to ask it!". Of coarse people have their minds made up ahead of time. That's how they get to the point of asking, but the experienced ones like you are who they are seeking advice from to check themselves, so don't get upset when they ask. I had my mind made up. It was changed by my post results. I made a decision that I'm not entirely happy about, but just think what a mistake I would have made if I hadn't posted it at all. And guys, it’s not always the operator. After I got my XL I knew when I opened the box that it just looked cheap. You know what they say about the duck! 4. Finally, base your purchase on what you expect (if you can afford it) and remember you probably will never reach that goal. There is no free lunch. If you have to make a repair, you learn, but like I said, you get what you pay for. I do understand when you are on a limited budget and then someone says “if it breaks upgrade. That can be frustrating if you haven’t got the cash. Fortunately I could afford what I spent on my buggy. I should have used the same logic on the MT. Not everyone can do that. When I bought my buggy (and radio, servos, etc.) it was a kit. I believe now that a kit is the best way to go. I don't thing there are as many kits in Monster Trucks. I was under the delusion that I could get my buggy for around $500, hmmm, try $1800 by the time you get a bump box and all the other necessities. You know what? I love it so if your budget won't allow a high price you have to expect the repairs. (Wish I would have listened to that philosophy when I got this truck) on the other hand if you can by a Truck, Radio, Starter, etc. for around $500 you can't expect to get top of the line. In retrospect I think I should have gotten the REVO Platinum, but I was trying to avoid a second bump box since the Platinum has a special designed flywheel. Dumb. So I’ll leave you with this, if you made a bad purchase do what I do…sell it and try again cause the hobby is way too much fun to give up on.

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
Well like I said the jury is still out. At 8PM EST someone returned the call from my message so at least they got back to me the same day. We will see. Depending on how they handle the repair will make my final impression. As for the plastic, I can believe what you're saying. Like I said I just have to get used to it. And honestly I haven't had it running long enough to really judge. Thanks for the insight though. As for the wheelie bar, I have to tune it a little more and see if I can even get it to do one before I buy the wheelie bar. It's just too soon to tell yet.

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
I believe you are thinking of the Losi Mini LST2 which is 1/18th scale. Everything I read states the LS2 scale as "Monster Truck". I has 20mm wheel hexes so I assumed that was 1/8 scale stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong.

RE: Which Monster Truck Would You Buy?
I haven't been back to this thread in a while. I was in the process of breaking in my new Savage XL. Thanks to all for your comments, but the decision was ultimately mine and I'm only semi-sure I made the right one. A lot of you bragged up the HPI stuff and I suppose since all I wanted was a bash around truck the XL is ok. It has some nice features like the 3-speed transmission and the size. I got a pretty good price too, ($569 including shipping from Ultimate Hobbies), but I'm disappointed in the quality. Most of it is plastic. The radio is crap. I put in a Spektrum SR3001 DSM 3-Channel Pro Series Receiver right away and programmed it into my M11. You have to take the body off (or cut holes in it) to turn off the receiver so more tweaking is needed. Taking the radio box apart is a pain. They put the twisty closer underneath the air filter and the air filter is put on with a wire tie instead of a rubber O-Ring like my OS engine. With the body on you can't reach the roll bar with is a much better way to carry it since the plastic bumpers are so flimsy I'm afraid I'm going to break them. So to sum it up, yeah it's an ok toy and that's what I got it for. Maybe after changing a few things I'll like it better, but in retrospect I'm thinking I probably should have gone with the Revo Platinum. So I'll play for a while, but eventually an upgrade is probably coming. Having said that, I may be all wet and just haven't given it a chance since I've only run about 6 tanks through it. Time will tell. Either way, as usual I appreciate all your comments.
