RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
I've completed the firewall. I epoxied a piece of 1/4" to 1/8" birch ply to make a firewall 3/8" thick. I then carefully measured the dimensions (about 20 times I think) at the new firewall lines I drew on the plans for the placement of the firewall, both on the side view and the top view to come up with my the firewall size. I measured, marked and cut out the firewall. Since the nose section is tapered I measured the angle and found it was 5 degrees. I used my belt/disk sander and set the table to the 5 degrees and then sanded the taper in being careful not to take off too much material and thus make the firewall too narrow. It turns out that the stock F2 is at the back of where new new firewall will be so it was nice to be able to use it to trace the curve on the top of the firewall. I cut it out on the bandsaw and smoothed it up on the belt sander. I've marked my firewall and drilled my initial pilot holes for the engine standoffs. The firewall was alot of measuring and remeasuring but I'm glad its done. Post of the actual firewall coming soon. Shortening the front balsa nose piece this much won't leave much room to attach the cowl. I'm planning on leaving the ply nose pieces full length and making some doublers forward of the firewall to make sure there is plenty of length to attach the cowl to. I hadn't considered it but I'm going to stick with the DLE30, both because I already have it and dont want to buy another engine, and because I think its a good exercise and learning experience in building for me to do the modifications to make the DLE work.

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
Modifying the front end so I can use the DLE-30. I'll have to move the firewall back. I cut out the front section from the other set of plans and taped it over the main side view of the Cub (just because its more clear to see when I build the piece). I then measured the length of the DLE from the prop hub to the back of the standoffs and subtracted about 3mm for the prop hub to stick out in front the cowl. I took that measurement and transferred it to the plans parallel to the firewall on the plans to keep the small amount of downthrust that is built in per plans. I'm using a Pitts type muffler that would interfere if I made the firewall full length so I"ll have to stop it just above the muffler and add another piece of ply at and angle to allow for clearance. Pic 1: plans Pic 2: line for new firewall placement drawn on plans (the line the pencil is pointing to is the front of the firewall) Pic 3: the angled piece I'll have to add at the bottom of the firewall to allow room for the muffler Pic 4: the DLE30 and muffler laid on top of plans

The connectors are definately slick. I'll definately think about using a wing tube for my future builds. Being my first build in 6 years I'm trying to learn the most I can but not get in too much over my head.

I like the idea of a wing tube but I don't trust my building skills enough to get the holes in the ribs for the tube in correct alignment. If the wings had no dihedral I'd be fine just stacking the ribs and drilling them all together at once.

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build
My plans are to build the center wing section onto the cabin as 1 piece similarly to SunDevilPilots super cub build. I'd like to use 2 screws into each wing from the inside to secure the wing to the fuse. My issue is that the J3 like I'm building has a smaller window than the super cub and if I build the center section between the fuse wing rib pieces with the stock plan I won't be able to get a screw into the forward part of the wing. The stock plans call for a pretty deep ply box from the top of the wing down into the fuse that would preclude being able to install a bolt. I'm thinking if I shorten the box I might still be able to sheet the top and have the smaller window and still use a screw in the forward part of the wing. I traced the plans to make a template which includes the central wing rib shape and the cabin top piece into 1 component. I then laminated pieces of birch ply to match the fuse tickness of 7/16" and on the forward bottom of the cabin top piece left an overlap to fit the front window brace properly. Pic 1: the laser cut center rib piece from the kit that won't be used on the build but I did use it to check the template I traced for the proper shape/size of the wing Pic 2: the template I made Pic 3: The newly laminated center wing pieces Pic 4: another view Pic 5: the center spar pieces in place

Well, I ended up finding some scrap 1/16" birch ply pieces (some 1" wide; some 1.25" wide - which is what I would have preferred they all be), so after a boring afternoon at the bandsaw and with the sander I now have gussets, albeit in 2 different sizes.

Pic 1: the fuse stick and truss framing with the lite ply fuse sides installed. I cut out the door from the ply before I glued it to the stick framing. I will have to cut the framing out of the door opening and attach it to the door and add framing around the door and door opening Pic 2: A pic of formers F5, F6, and F7 with balsa former F8-11. I built these before I had planned my fuse modification (similar to cubman's website). F5 is modified by being narrower to account for the way I'll build the top of the cabin. I've further modified it (cut the top of the former from the side legs at the bottom of the upper square and tacked it back for the time being with CA for fuse assembly. The legs/bottom will be taken out after the fuse is assembled. F6 will be omitted (I had modified it from stock plans but going with cubmans' style fuse mod it won't be needed at all). F7 is assembled as stock at this point. (hoping I can get the pics attached)

I've embarked on my own Sig 1/4 scale cub build. I'm planning on keeping it the stock full wing version. I've done quite a bit of research and I will be modifying the fuse quite a bit. I will give credit to SunDevilPilot, VincentJ, and Cubman who have all been very helpful in their posts and whose building techniques I will borrow from. Mods planned thus far: -center wing section build onto fuse with removable wings like SunDevilPilot's build -Robart gear -Cabin modification similar to cubman's plans with opening right side door/window -Fiberglass specialites cowl (without molded in engines) -Scale Continental engines from TopNotch to install into cowl for more scale look -moving firewall back to allow for power with a DLE-30 I'm sure there will be more but thats all I can think of for now

RE: 1/4 Sig cub: need help with firewall movement for engine
I'm planning to build in the opening door/window. I've looked at your site and gotten some great ideas. I'm doing a "built on" center section like SunDevelPilot did in his build so I've built up 7/16" laminated birch ply wing roots in the center section that include the stick that does atop the cabin formers. It should be plenty strong not to need the music wire down the length of the cabin so I'm planning on drilling it into the ply and inch or so and then having the wire go down the front window support. I'm trying to figure out what to do at the bottom of the window support. I know the DLE30 may overpower this plane a bit but its what I have and I don't want to buy another engine right now. This is my 3rd build - the last 2 were beginner kits (Sig LT-40 and Sig SSE) that I did about 6 years ago. I'm looking at this build as a learning experience - I want it to turn out nice but it doesn't have to be exactly scale. I think doing some of these modifications will be very helpful for the future.

I'm building this one as a full wing J3 so I don't think I'll go with flaps on this one. I've got a Super Cub on my short list for future builds so I'll definately do flaps when that one gets built.
ORIGINAL: kork From what I recall, I just cut out the existing fire wall and made a new one  farther back but measured from the existing. was not that big of a deal. I also used wood dowels through the side of the fuse into the firewall and of course triangle stock to beef it up. The airplane fly's fantastic and comes in at a whopping 14.5 pounds.
I like how you cut out the original firewall ply to keep for a former. Hadn't thought of that - I'll definately be doing that on my build.

RE: 1/4 Sig cub: need help with firewall movement for engine
ORIGINAL: VincentJ  Moving the firewall back isn't as hard as you might think especially during the building process and not as an afterthought. Make sure that you use a piece of ply of adaquate thickness 1/4'' at the bare minimumm and not more than 1/2''. Be sure to use a good quality Birch ply and to use epoxy for the adhesive. In addition to the epoxy it would be wise to pin the sides of the firewall with wood dowels. I used 4 or 5 on each side on mine. As for the right thrust putting 1 1/2-2 degrees right thrust wouldn't hurt anything. It may help offset the thrust of the engine on takeoff to minimize the input of right rudder.   I had to move mine back as well, I used a  DLE-20 on mine (wished I had used the DLE30).  Hope this helps and good luck.
I was thinking about a Zenoah G26 so I wouldn't have to do as much modification but with the width of that motor I think I'd have to cut holes in the cowl for it to fit which I don't want to do. My local hobby shop has regular lite ply but I didn't birch when I was there last. Since I'll have to move the firewall so far back (somewhere around 1.5") I guess I'll have to leave the lite ply pieces as cheeks and put doublers on them so I'll still have the length in the nose to attach the cowl to. Do you happen to have any more pics of the music wire you used down your "a pillars" to reinforce the forward cabin?

1/4 Sig cub: need help with firewall movement for engine
I'm in the early stages of a sig 1/4 scale cub build. I've planned on using a DLE 30 with a Pitts muffler. Since the dle has a rear carb I'll have to move the firewall back quite a bit to keep the prop hub in the correct position, over an inch. Has anyone done this with this kit that happens to have pics or can walk me through what they did? Also, per the Plans there is 1.5 deg of down thrust and no right thrust. If I'm moving the firewall anyway would it benefit me to build in a couple degrees of right thrust?

Engine suggestion for 1/4 Cub
I'm starting to build a Sig 1/4 scale cub. I'd like to make it my first gasser. I was looking at a DLE 30 for it but since the carb is rear and the standoffs are pretty long I'll have to do some modification to the firewall to make it fit correctly. Would the be too much engine for the cub? I'm planning on building a GP Stinson Reliant next which I think a DLE30 might be a good fit for so if there is a better choice for the cub I'm not opposed to changing.

First Advanced kit build, recommendations on tool purchases recommended
I just got a Sig 1/4 scale J-3 Cub kit which will be my 3rd kit but the first real kit requiring more advanced building skills. I got out the plans and the instructions and looked through the "box of sticks" and it looks like it will be alot of fun but I did run into my first question. Several of the fuse parts are just printed on large piece of 5/16" balsa. I don't want to tackle cutting these out with hand tools as I'm sure I won't get the edges square and 5/16" is a fairly big gap if it isn't square. Ideally I'd love to buy both a power scroll saw and a tabletop disc sander to get these cut out and shaped. Eventually I will by them both but don't want to put that investment now if I don't have to. For now I'm thinking i can get by with the disk sander and just use hand tools to get the rough shapes apart. It'll make more balsa dust but I think i can deal with that. Any other opinions? Any other powertools I should put on my wish list for the future? Any suggestions about disc sanders or scroll saws?

Does anyone know of any links to a build thread modifiying the sig kit for a 2-piece wing. I want to build a standard J-3 with the full wing and I think carring the 105" one piece wing would be a pain the rear. I'm a relatively novice builder having only built the sig LT-40 (which I learned to fly with) and a Sig Somethin Extra. I'd love a step-by-step for the wing modification.

help deciding which 1/4 cub kit
I'm planning on building a 1/4 J-3 Cub kit as my next build. I've been looking at the BUSA and Sig kits. I like the sig kit except for the wing. I'd like a wing similar to the BUSA kit where the center section stay attached tot he fuse and the 2 wings are attached to that. Can anyone point me to any build threads for 1/4 sig kits with the wing attachments modified or should I just go with the BUSA kit? I've tried searching on here but for some reason I almsot always end up with 0 matching thread despite trying alot of different word combos for the search.

It ended up that the LSN was all gunked up. I opened it all the way and could see crud on the tip of the needle. A little fuel soak and it was clean. I used the blow through the carb with some fuel tubing method and reset the LSN and to my amazement when I cranked it back up last night it ran perfectly. A few tweaks to the HSN were all I needed. It idled nicely and had quick smooth transition from idle to WOT. I was surprised I didn't need to do any tweaking to the LSN.
