New battery charger and Nicd batteries
I just received my new Hitec X1 battery charger and some new batteries for my plane and want to make sure that I charge and maintain them correctly. I have read the owners manual for the charger and although I believe that I am of at least average intellegence I am struggling to set up my charger correctly based on the instructions included with the X1 and at all costs i don't want to revert to the wall wart. My batteries are a 5 cell flatpack Nicd 6.0v 2400ma Sanyo CP-2400scr Cell impedence is 4.5mOhms I could just go the auto charge route on the charger but I would like to properly "formation charge" these batteries. So I know that I need to charge at c/10 for approximately 14-16 hrs. With that being said does anyone know what some of the other input values should be for these batteries when setting up a custom charge program? I appreciate any and all responses. Thanks, Rad

I never met Mike but i feel like I knew him. He helped me many times through his thorough discussions and tutorials on everything RC. He will be sorely missed.

Quadra 52 kill-switch question
I have a magneto driven Quadra 52 and I am thinking that it should have a kill switch as an added safety feature. Can someone recommend a particular type? best installation? etc? thanks

RE: Battery question
Great information. Thanks. I agree that I need to upgrade my charger. Any recommendations? Would probably want to buy something that has flexibility as to what types of batteries could be charged etc. thanks

Battery question
Just purchased a top-flite at-6 texan second hand with a DLE 20 and it already has batteries mounted in the plane up near the rear of the firewall. I want to make sure that i properly charge these batteries. The batteries are JR extra 1800. There is not any other informatiion on the battery pack to identify what type of battery. They are a 4 cell square pack and the individual cells appear to be bigger than AA but smaller than C cells. I have gone to the JR site and i cannot find the battery anywhere so my question is: 1. what type of battery is it? NiCd? Nmh? Voltage? Can I charge it using the standard charger that came with my futaba 10c which is the standard transmitter receiver wall charger that came with it. Any other advice? Thanks in advance for your insight.

RE: Seagull 1.20 PT-19
I am impressed with your attention to detail. I too am finishing up my pt-19 from Hostetler plans. I recognize the full scale PT in your picture. It is here in Houston and a great flyer. I have been up in it several times. Great project...

Battery charging question
I am using a Jomar Ultimate Battery backer and am confused about charging. I have connected two receiver batteries to the backer. The first one is a 4.8v 600mah sanyo (standard issue with Futaba R6014hs receiver and a Hydramax 4.8v 2000mah. My plan is to connect this to the switch harness so that i have one charger receptacle. Can i use the standard futaba wall charger that came with the transmitter/reciever to charge these batteries at the same time? The wall charger outputs 4.8v at 100mah. Thanks, Rad

Covering help needed for PT-19
I am building a 1/4 scale pt-19 from Hostetler plans and am ready to start covering. I am using Coverite fabric and need some guidance on the best way to cover the fuselage. Seems to me one could cover lengthwise or widthwise. Each strategy appears to have its challenges. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Rad

RE: Hostetler PT-19 landing gear
Hi Ron, I had it laser cut by Precision Cut Kits. Full kit and I thought well done. However come to think of it, I wish they had included a way to do the wing fillets. The Hostetler plan are vague in that area though. I will have them do my next project when i finally finish this one. Rad

RE: Hostetler PT-19 landing gear
Hi Colin, Your post on the pt-19 you built is from some time ago but your comment on making the wing fillets is interesting to me as I am currently building my pt-19 and am trying to figure the best way to build up those wing fillets. How did you do yours? Thanks, Rad
ORIGINAL: Marcol Hi Ron , I built / have the PT 19 from Hostetler's plans. Mine has a ZDZ 60 engine in it. It weighs about 25lb. As for the landing gear, I have a lathe so i made my own based on the sierra giant scale oleo leg. The only part of the build that I did differently from the plan was to use built up elevators and rudder, instead of solid sheet. I also put a carbon tube spar in the horizontal stabiliser. And just for peace of mind I also used tail brace wires. If I remember the wing fillet was a bit of a pain as well. They were the ''down side''. On the upside ....................... It's a fantastic giant scale flyer If you need any more info just ask. Colin
hanks, Rad

Quadra Gasser questions
looking for some insight regarding this manufacturer. I am building a PT-19 from Hostetler plans and am ready to order the motor. Hostetler used a Quadra 50 in his original design back in 1988. I have been all over the internet researching and have found out that the 50 has been replaced with a new and improved 52. Also while doing my research it appears that Quadra (the Company) has struggled to keep their doors open over the last handful of years. Apparently there is a group in Canada that has restructured and is offering Quadra engines but i do not see the 52 in their lineup. I have also found a guy by the name of BennetBuilt which is supposedly the U.S. distributor of Quadra engines and DOES offer the 52. Can anyone give me the history of what is going on and from whom can i trust and buy an engine for my plane? Thanks,

RE: Adhesive Question
Hi Gray Beard, I was perusing the blogs this evening hoping to find some information about possible allergic reaction in our hobby. Much to my surprise it appears to be fairly common with CA. In your post you state that it gives you a cold. I have been suffering over the last few months from cold like symptoms just about every time I start up building. My symptoms are mostly a stuffy nose. just like a cold and it lasts for approximately 2-3 days. For a while I did not make the connection but am glad to know that CA does cause a bad reaction with some people and that I am not just a sickey. I like working with CA as it is fast and efficient. I wonder if some sort of mask or ventilator would work? I did use a cheap carpenter's mask the other night and it did not work. ( I have the cold like symptoms to prove it) Yours or anyone else's thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Covering tips and advice
I am building a pt-19 and have just about completed the tail feathers. They are shaped and sanded and slotted for the heavy duty Dubro hinges I am using. The plans call for Super Coverite so I will probably go with that. As I think about covering these tail feathers I have come to the realization that I could install the hinges now and cover later or cover now and install the hinges later. I think there are pros and cons to each. As a fairly new builder I could sure use some advice on how to approach this. thanks in advance.

RE: Servos
Great advice from all. Thanks. I have seen the computerized transmitters and I think that is the way I will go. Apparently the 2.4GHz are the future. Is there some kind of formula to determine which servos will work best or are strong enough for a particular model?

Setup for pt-19 from Hostetler plans
Can anyone share some insight on the best way to set up this model. The plans call for Airtronics servo 94510. I am told that they quit making them 15 years ago. Who makes the best servos these days for this type of application? Also the plans show two elevator servos, one rudder, one throttle mounted in th fuselage and two aileron servos mounted in the wing. Why are two servos required for the elevators? isn't one enough? What about the flaps? what is the best way to set those up? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Engine help Quadra 50 Quadra 52
I am building a pt-19 26% scale from Hostetler plans which were published in 1988 and call for a Quadra 50. Seems to me that there has been a lot of technological advances since 1988. Has anyone used the 50 or the newer 52? Also is there another brand that I should consider for this project? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Servos
I am building a Hostetler PT-19 26% scale and the plans call for Airtronics 94510 servos per the plans. As these plans were produced in 1988 I am wondering if Airtronics is the way to go or is there a better manufacturer to use? Any insight would be helpful. thanks

RE: 26% Scale Fairchild PT-19 Trainer Wendel Hostetler Plans Build
Hi Colin, I was perusing the site and was very interested in this thread started by dinointexas last year on his PT-19 build. As I was reading, it became apparent that you too have built the Hostetler PT-19. I have been trying to reach out to him but have not been able to make contact. Do you know what happened to him? I thought it peculiar that his posts abruptly stopped last August. Thanks for your help. Rad

Has anyone heard from dinointexas? I noticed he has not updated his post on the PT-19 since august of 2008. From reading his posts and looking at his pictures it looked like he was doing a great job.
