RE: BS903-109 vs BS903-110
109 is the input driven by the driveshaft. 110 is the output which drives the dogbones/axles, 2 per diff. See detail at the top right: http://www.redcatracing.com/site/partsbypicture/backdraft8E.html

RE: Earthquake 8E new combo
One of these days I'm going to have to figure something out with my Backdraft. The motor I bought has a slightly larger diameter can and interferes with the drive shaft/spur gear carrier. I can't adjust it far enough to get a good mesh and I've been going through a pinion about once every other battery. I bought the thing used with no ESC. I put a 150a Hobby King ESC on it and the original motor fried.

RE: Volcano EXP Pro vs. Caldera 10E
Well, we all came to the same conclusion. :) The occasional puddle isn't going to kill a Volcano, just don't soak it. And you're right, all bashers are going to break parts. Buy extras whenever you order parts and you should be happy.

RE: Volcano EXP Pro vs. Caldera 10E
OT, but I had to share. :) My Backdraft has been in pieces for a few months (been WAY too busy with work). I put a set of street tires and a taller pinion on it and had it running up and down the street. The tires made it oversteer like crazy the way it was set up. The last time down, it was heading toward the side of the street but I didn't want to over correct and spin in to the mailbox, so I turned REALLY gently. Too gently, apparently. The rear tire just caught my mailbox at 50mph+ and tore the whole thing in half. I still haven't inspected very well, but it looks like the 4 screws that hold the rear diff on were sheared and everything else is fine. And nitro hit it on the head, it was the rear c-hubs that broke on both Volcanos. My dad also shredded a pinion at some point.

RE: Volcano EXP Pro vs. Caldera 10E
I can't offer any direct experience as I don't have either, but what I DO have a Backdraft 8E, which shares most parts with the Caldera, and my dad and neighbor both have Volcanos. I've been looking at 1/10 buggies and wondering the same thing as you. The Backdraft is much heavier duty than the Volcano. In some ways this is a good thing (tougher dogbones and axle stubs, etc) but the extra weight (which is quite a bit) means it still breaks just as much anyway. The Caldera is surely a bit lighter than that but heavier than a Volcano. The Volcano seems more fragile while the Backdraft seems more overweight. Despite the fragile nature, though, the Volcanos and my Lightning can stand up to an awful lot, and my Lightning seems almost bulletproof. If I had it to do over I would probably have ordered a Caldera instead of the Backdraft. But it would have been close.

RE: Volcano EPX tires for pavement.
I've been using these on my Lightning. They still don't last that long, but they're dirt cheap. Unfortunately they're out of stock right now, no idea when they'll get more. http://www.hobbypartz.com/51c00-02020-white.html

RE: Exhaust Bolts on the Volcano S30?
I'd definitely just take it in to a hardware store or email someone at Redcat asking specifically about that bolt. They'll almost definitely have some, even if they aren't for sale on the site.

RE: je$us....now main spur gear gone - Caldera 10E
FWIW on my dual 2S Backdraft I haven't had any trouble with the spur, which should be the same part. I've gone through pinions like crazy though, both spur and brass. I've eaten up one spur which was probably because of the bad pinions. The Tacon motor I'm using has a larger diameter can and I can't get a good mesh with it. Might want to check and make sure you ARE getting a good mesh when you put the new spur gear in.

RE: je$us....now main spur gear gone - Caldera 10E
Not sure what any good aftermarket spurs are. I thought the Caldera had a steel spur gear? You can adjust the brake force with a programmer card. I'd get one and try setting it to 25%.

RE: Bullet Connectors stuck together.
They shouldn't be melted together unless there was some solder on one side or the other. If the heat were to get that high, you'd see the ends becoming desoldered from the wires way before the ends would fuse together. I say get a couple pairs of pliers and try pulling them apart with some mechanical advantage.

RE: sh .18 vs. vx .18.....
Increasing the bore of a cylinder generally has the effect of raising peak HP while stroke raise lower rpm torque. The VX may make more peak HP but the SH probably as a fatter torque curve and performs better overall.

RE: Caldera 10E - Help w/Installation of new Frnt dogbones, Frnt Cups and Servo
Ok, I got it now. #1 Yeah, the screw should self tap in that hole just fine. If it's a bit too tight try drilling it out just a bit. Obviously make sure you don't overtighten. #2 The servo I bought came with a handful of different horns. The one I ended up using was an X like yours. I cut off the parts that interfered with the chassis. If the horn you have doesn't work for some reason, any hobby shop will sell them. You should be able to find something that works.

RE: Caldera 10E - Help w/Installation of new Frnt dogbones, Frnt Cups and Servo
You can use any horn that will fit your servo. On mine the shaft was a bit different size so I couldn't reuse the original horn, but if you can that's probably your best bet. So you're saying the screw that holds the horn to the shaft won't fit through the horn itself, right? The horn is relatively soft plastic, just make it fit. Either just run the screw through it (the threads should cut through easily) or drill it out. Since you're only passing the screw through it's not very critical. On the other end of the horn, the screw I had for the steering linkage was bigger. I just turned the screw till it took.

RE: quick fix?
You're probably missing a dogbone from one side or the other. Should be pretty quick and easy to fix. I'd buy a handful of them as that won't be the last one you replace.

RE: Caldera 10E - Help w/Installation of new Frnt dogbones, Frnt Cups and Servo
Glad you appreciated it. :) And when I saw your name I apparently completely forgot you had a question.. So here's my 2 cents: If you didn't already, next time you order parts I'd get a few extra dogbones and axles. If you can find someplace cheap, I'd pick up a bunch of different sized screws (either in a kit or just a whole bunch of Redcat's packs). I also like to keep a differential housing or 3 around because I like to run in to mailboxes. As far as preventative maintenance on the car, I wouldn't really bother with anything until it comes up except periodically tightening screws and checking the gear mesh. I think I crash more than most people but I'm working on my cars so much that pretty much every part is going to be removed every 5th time or so I drive it. And now you've got me thinking.. I've been planning on converting my extra Backdraft to, 1/6 scale, but I think converting it to a Caldera would make more sense.

RE: Caldera 10E - Help w/Installation of new Frnt dogbones, Frnt Cups and Servo
The Caldera will sometimes become Broken, even though it has Strength Beyond Strength. If you just spend 5 Minutes Alone with it you'll get it fixed. Sometimes you'll feel like the buggy has been Slaughtered and you're in the Throes of Rejection. It won't take 25 Years to fix if you Use Your Third Arm. Waka waka.

RE: Sumo RC issues
I wouldn't say I've seen an issue but out of 8 or so Sumos I've seen it happen a handful of times. Mine stripped because I over tightened the motor mount screws, bored out the holes and couldn't keep a good mesh. The neighbor kid likes to run in to things and keep pulling on the throttle. Grass particularly seems to like to strip them out.

RE: Any hobbyshops around city of industry that will fix redcat 1/5 slace
Agreed. These things really are simple to work on, the most complicated thing probably being tuning the engine which you'll need to do every time you drive the thing. Things are going to break, bend and wear out. You should plan on a repair of some sort practically every time you drive it.

RE: new backdraft 3.5 problems
The transmission isn't sealed, you'll just want to make sure the gears are greased. You're running 20% nitro, you want to see what the oil %age is. The more oil the hotter its going to need to be to burn and the more susceptible it's going to be to fouling plugs. I think 10% oil is about what you want.

RE: new backdraft 3.5 problems
Make sure you aren't running a fuel with too much oil. We tried a 18% mix and I couldnt get my 3.5 to run for crap. For the transmission, you'll have to take the whole thing apart. There's a set screw on the side of one of the gears that tensions a spring against a centrifugally actuated lever. You'll want to turn it out a bit. Unfortunately it's a whole lot of tearing apart and putting back together over and over again to test.

RE: Volcano EXP PRO
The springs aren't stiff enough to return to fully extended. If you think about a real car, your springs are going to be partially compressed all the time. Your Volcano is the same way. If you ever watch people who race RCs make suspension adjustments, they'll always drop the car on the table to get it to sit at the height it will actually drive at. So, uh.. in short, sounds normal. :)

RE: Volcano Sandrail
I wouldn't think there'd be any issue with mounting the engine sideways, as long as you can find a way to drive the transmission. And since you're building your own chassis it would be easy to add some protection to your pipe however you decide to mount it. I'm starting to feel like I should do something like this. I'm honestly more in to tinkering with my RCs than actually driving them. What kind of solder are you using?

RE: Volcano Sandrail
The diffs will hold oil. Since you're going 2wd I'd think you would probably want a pretty heavy weight oil in there, maybe even locking it. Before the 1/6 scale cars came out I was thinking about cutting a longer chassis for my 1/8 Backdraft from aluminum and replacing the front driveshaft with one from a Volcano. I know they're different but I can't remember what exactly. It seems like the pins are smaller on the Volcano than the Backdraft. I think you would be able to use a 1/10 driveshaft with a 1/8 diff, but maybe not the other way around.
