RE: Williams Bros 1/3 Scale wheels
I think most people are assuming the Williams Fokker wheel will be the 760 X 100mm version. The Fokker DrI is the only common German fighter that used the smaller 700 X 100mm wheels, to the best of my knowledge. A true 1/3 scale 700 X 100mm will will be 233 X 33mm. Herbie wheels are the only other commercial ones I am aware of, and the 220 X 30 are the closest unless you look at custom versions. http://www.herbiewheels.de/index3.htm Martin

RE: Williams Bros 1/3 Scale wheels
Re N.28 wheels - I've seen drawings indicating 650X80mm wheels, but I think that may have been just the early production. I think the usual size was 700X100mm but the hub should be equally dished on both sides, not mainly on the outside as the British Palmer. Hmmmm... can we get Daniel to do a French wheel?[:D] Martin

RE: Rib stitch and tape over Koverall
I used Koveral on my Aviatik DI build - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9945319/anchors_10279933/mpage_2/key_/anchor/tm.htm#10279933 and then Solartex for rib tapes. (The last 3 or four pages have some finished pictures.) The Solartex rips in nice straight strips - just notch the end and you can rip six foot long 1/4" strips! Then I used white glue applied with a glue syringe, (I think SiIG carries them among others. You can look at the finished pictures to decide if the results are what you are looking to achieve. Other than for a clear doped wing, it is the way to go for me. It doesn't take that long and adds so much to the finished plane. Martin

Do you have the plans? I have the old Hanson plans and if they are the ones you are looking at, they are pretty a basic, old design - not too scale. Martin

RE: EIII Restoration
Ahh... I think you have it - too rearward a cg for a small stab. As painful as it is to add, perhaps more noseweight is in order. As Teo noted, a +3 degree wing stab decalage is probably too much. Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
Laddie, I went with a proper canister exhaust after seeing Keith Zimmerley's DH-4 several years ago and being impressed with the sound. There is enough electric flier in me to NOT want the loud bark of so many gas "mufflers". Larry, I traded in my BUSA certificate for a DrI, but I may try a more conveniently sized 1/4 scale model first - I like building this size. I also have a set of Teus' turnbuckles and I'd like to use them next. Thanks Teus. I think I have it figured out now. I am pleased with how well all the detail has stayed with the plane. Nothing has shaken loose. In fact all the rigging is still solid. I was sure I would forget something as this is my first gas plane, but so far nothing has let go. I still have to open up the radio compartment but have my fingers crossed. I'm sure that the ZDZ90 has something to do with this as it is a very smooth running engine. That is much of the reason I chose it. Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
Gosh darn, Teus, how did you do that? I tried using YouTube's embed feature and all I got was the url and picture specifics, (ie a line of text), when I tried to post it here. Curious as to your inability to make the link work, (it works for me), as well as your ability to find it on YouTube! I couldn't. Don, it was the wife of a club member who was videoing. Hopefully I'll be getting some better video and still soon. As for photo ops - I have a ton of still from this build so that's not may orientation so much - sorry! The landing was every bit as good as the take off which is why Rolly always gets my "more complicated" test flights. Martin

http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&video_id=OHqNdWELZoc Thanks Teus. Yes, just using exponential would allow full deflection for ground handling purposes. By the way, the ground handling is very good - short, wide gear fairly far forward. Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
SUCCESS!!! I did a test flight this evening and everything went well. We did a couple of power run-ups, range check, slight radio programming adjustments and then I handed the box over to Rolly Siemensen, a club member who has been flying since the 60s. Rolly does this for a lot of our club - test flights are no place for egos. I have a couple of videos, but only one is worth downloading. (I am loading it on YouTube tonight.) You will see that the tail lifts quite easily with the application of power. This was reassuring as it confirmed that the CG must be close. Takeoff was straightforward and climb out at 1/2 throttle was good. A little up trim was needed but other than that, it flew fine. I got the transmitter a couple of minutes into the flight and found that it was very neutral laterally - it needed opposite aileron and rudder to come out of turns. The elevator is very powerful and only a very small amount was needed. It is a draggy plane that needs more power than I had thought, (I still have lots of reserve) The landing approach started WAY out, (I will have to do some "perceptual adjusting" for this size of plane), but touched down smoothly. Thanks Roll! Overall, I felt a little like I was "balancing on a ball", but never like I was going to "fall off". The elevator sensitivity was surprising. While it is quite large, it is on a long tail moment which usually smooths things out, (think about pattern planes) . Normally, I would suspect a CG too far aft, but it's at 25% of MAC, and it's easy to lift the tail taxiing. I think it will get some expo to soften it around neutral and I'll dial down the throws. I think I'll also increase the aileron differential and see if that improves the roll rate. I checked the head temp on landing. Now, it had been at low throttle during the approach and landing, and it took about a minute for me to get a reading. however, it read 188C with suggests that I'm right in the middle of the ZDZ recommended 180-210C. After winning the "Spirit of Rhinebeck" award last weekend, (and a 1/3 scale Balsa USA Fokker DrI now in the basement), this caps off a great week. Martin

P-47 Thunderbolt or A6M Zero - if you want to go "heavy metal". Both these fly patterns pretty well for scale airplanes. Martin

RE: 1/4 scale Morane Saulnier Type N French Scout
Nice progress Bri. I agree that the designing is half the fun. Have you done a strength test on your screw eyelets? The reason I ask is that Tony Clark has steel threaded eyes on P.126 of his catalogue. http://www.toni-clark.com/ftp/cat_11_2008_april_1_2010_en.pdf I doubt there is any weight difference but the steel will be much stronger. (And I've found ordering from Germany to be no problem.) Regarding power, as an FYI, a friend has a 23lb 26.5% SE5A with a Saito FG36 running a 18X8 at 7400. He uses full throttle only for takeoff and aerobatics, 1/2 throttle the rest of the time. Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
Thanks, Teus. I got an optical kill switch from another company and it works the same way. I'm VERY particular about safety. We'll see how it goes. A heavy duty slide switch is also installed. Well, it's ready to go at 43lb, of which 12lb is lead, (somewhere a church roof is leaking......). We've had cross winds all this past weekend, and I mean 90degrees to the runway. Today it poured rain! I ran it up with all the cowlings on and no details shook loose. Actually, I'm impressed with the smoothness of the engine. I will have to add baffles to force air through the cylinder fins but I doubt I'll need more than 1/2 throttle at any point. I must look at moving the throttle curve to give more weight to the bottom end of the throttle stick. Now, if only the weather would co-operate! Oh well, Rhinebeck this weekend. Martin

RE: 26.5% SE5A video
It's scratch built. Yes, Thayer, it has been in the works a while. Many years ago, Brian's boss decided that he should learn AutoCad, but wasn't going to do anything so sensible as send him to a class or anything - "Just do it when you have spare time"(!) So he figured he might as well design something useful and started on the SE5A. Work progressed over the years and the baby who was yet to be born, is now in his 3rd year of engineering! It was test flown last year but the engine wasn't getting more than about 6100rpm and it was a little tail heavy. The engine was sent off to Horizon, (sticky valve as it turns out), and Brian added some nose weight and a little side thrust. Last week he got in two new test flights in calmer weather and made a number of picture perfect landings. Naturally, there was no video camera to record it. We went out this morning and I made my first videoing attempt, followed by my first Youtube upload. (Do the uploads always take over an hour?) Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
First engine run-up today! I mounted the ZDZ 90 upright initially, coz that was how the DL50 had been mounted. Then, when I got the manifold tubing, it was obvious that I'd have half the manifold out in the breeze if I didn't do something. So it was re-mounted, (3rd engine mounting!), at about 20 degrees off vertical which brought the manifold inside the cowling. The stainless steel manifold parts silver soldered together with no difficulty. This was my first experience silver soldering, (40 years I've been avoiding the necessity!), and was pleased with how easy it was. I got the flux coated silver solder from KS along with the canister and manifold parts. The can is attached with a slick shock absorbing system - nice and solid, but isolated from some of the vibration. I fiddled and farted around with where to put the ignition and battery. Again, taking far too long but wanting it just right I ended up with the set-up in the photos. The ignition gets some cooling but is secure and the battery is still accessible once the front cowl is removed, (2 bolts). The radio and ignition switch were just temporary mounts. What are people's thoughts about ignition switches? I've been told to steer clear of toggle switches because they fail with the vibration. There are a number of slide switches available, (priced outrageously for what they are), but I'm a little suspicious. Too bad we can't get the old Noble switches - I think they were about 4 or 5 pole. I'm considering using a pair of Deans plugs as a switch. The ZDZ started right up. Ignition on and choke closed until the engine pops, then open the choke and two flips later it's running. Once it warmed up a bit, I got the throttle down to 1300rpm but it really shook that low. About 1700 smoothed it out a lot. Then we applied power [X(] At 5800rpm, Brian wasn't sure how well he he could hang on! The engine should go to about 6500 with the 28 X 10 prop, but I suspect I'll be taking off at about 1/4 throttle. Lots of semi-secured turnbuckles let go so now I am going over them, locktighting the threads and safety wiring everything. I think I'm on track for test flying in the next week or so. Martin

RE: Aviatik DI build
You'll see it Tom, and the airframe will be done. But, even if I were to get the radio in and working smoothly, I'm not optimistic about getting in enough flights in to want to cavort about in the skies over Rhinebeck. Weight is now looking like 40lb but the CG is well forward. That still puts the cube loading at 5.6 or halfway between glider and trainer! Martin

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
I think you could used Koverall as a base. Once it's doped, there really isn't any difference between it and doped tissue. Once the Koverall is sealed, the silk could be applied with the thin wallpaper paste. You wouldn't need to use the tabs to adhere it - you could cut it flush with the TE. A couple of coats of dope would be sufficient to finish it off. Martin
