RE: The Electric vs. Nitro thing...
I first got started in this hobby in 1983 with an Associated RC 500, them moved to a Serpent Excell in 1988. It was a 1/8 scale on road gas car. (we called it gas back then, not nitro). Electrics..., from what I said in my initial post about running my Losi nitro truck against the electrics is this. You see, when we were all running nitro trucks I usually waited to be one of the last guys to start up

The Electric vs. Nitro thing...
that do both. I just do Nitro. But I did find out just how equal they really are in performance. Sure... as a many of those drivers have moved up to 1/8 4WD nitro, that's why we mix the electric and nitro in 1/10 2WD. And I'm one of the Nitro 1/10 drivers. So a few weeks ago when my Nitro truck (Losi... torque curves than nitro engines. Anyway I had good racing with it and the car didn't seem much

RE: Transmission trouble on my Losi XXX-NT AD2...
ORIGINAL: MCSRacing i just replaced the cases in my drake, broke them at the output bearing carriers lol ......  i run the rrp aluminum diff gear and the delrin compund gear, ya must have a weak link to fail if something goes wrong .... the aluminum compound gears dont seem to last and better and they definately destroy ur trans when they go out
I found out the problem finally. I was pretty disgusted so I didn't work on it for a while. The recess that supports the differential bearing on the left side was out of round so the bearing was loose. It was dropping the diff. away from the idler a little bit and not making full tooth contact so the the teeth stripped away. But I don't know how the transmission case got that way. It was a new case that I used when I rebuilt the transmission last Dec.. I replaced the case, the idler and the input gear/shaft during that rebuild. So I fixed it last week and had a race this past Sat. and it worked great. I mean the whole truck was great, the engine and the chassis was in tune as it hooked up really well too.

RE: Baja pictures and the place I run it at....
ORIGINAL: cheezer1222 I actually just purchased the 5t roof guard for the same reason. Did you end up bolting the front of the roof guard to the metal plate underneath, or did you just leave the front loose?
Yes, I bolted it in the front too. It comes with all the hardware for it. (longer bolts). I had checked out the 5T instruction at the HPI website to see how it installs before I bought it. The 5T has the same plate there only with holes cut into it.

Baja pictures and the place I run it at....
I just added that Roof Guard from the 5T to my 5b. It looks kind of funny but it protects the spark plug and makes a great carry handle too. Here's a few shots. The first one I took from my "driver's stand" at a full 12x zoom. These two I just went up close. You can see the Baja in the first two shots to give you a sense of size of the area too. I also just put on new Proline Badlands as my Hostile mini MX's were worn down and the car was tail sliding all over the place. You can see the worn out tires. I took these pictures the day before I put on the Badlands. Well with the Badlands on it the car was really "hooked up". I mean I could spin the car around too easily but I got really good tail slides. I was able to drive the car very agressively doing really hot laps. The terrain is perfectly to the scale of the Baja. The bumps and dips aren't too big. There are place when I hit certain bumps just right the car will catch a little air and keep on going. My "main straight" must be about 200 ft long and I can easily make WOT passes. There are two ditches dug out there that I run my course around in an "L" spaped figure 8. Here is a wide angle view. It is five photos stitched together from left to right. I actually twisted 90 deg from left to right to take the shots. And below the wide angle are the individual shots so you can get a better idea what the place looks like. The pictures are taken from my "driver's stand" which is roughtly 8 to 10 ft off the lower level. Sound is contained behind the "wall" on the right. I'm pretty close to new houses and have rarely even had anyone look to see what the noise is about. Its walking distance from my house too. The individual pictures: That incline on the right leads to the upper level where I do my pitting. Easy to enter/exit.

RE: What was your first real RC car?
I hope I didn't previously answer this post, there are a lot of pages to look through so I'll answer it "again" maybe. My first serious R/C car was the Associated RC 500 1/8 scale on road gas car in 1983. We called it "gas" back then, not "nitro". I raced it in the 80's. Here's a link to someone's page about the car. Its not mine as I don't even have any old photos of it. I dyed all my nylon parts black. http://home.comcast.net/~davesipes/rc500after.htm

RE: Transmission trouble on my Losi XXX-NT AD2...
ORIGINAL: All The Way Check the case where the bearings go for the compound gear, I’ve broken several there and the end result is the compound gear destroying and taking the monster gear with it. Also make sure there are no plastic remains left in the top gear, some times they get jammed in.
When I rebuit it I cleaned all the teeth from the alum. gears, put it all back together and it all worked nice an smoothly. It all fit together quite well. It spun nice and free. But the idler gear is just too week a material. Perhaps they are using an inferior grade of nylon now.

Transmission trouble on my Losi XXX-NT AD2...
The idler gear from the P/N set A2927 keeps stripping. My original gear last about 2 full seasons. Then it stripped. So I replaced it. The next time I ran it the new gear stripped before I finished a full tank of fuel. Maybe 3/4 tank. So I thought maybe it was defective. So I put in another one. This time I got about 5 tanks of fuel through it before it stripped. I didn't even make it to the first heat race. It stripped during morning practice. Because this is rediculous having this gear constantly stripping out. The stock input gear (P/N A9931 is alum. I replaced the differential gear (P/N A2925) with the Robinson Racing alum gear when I first built it. Only the idler is Nylon and it keeps stripping now. So does anyone make an aftermarket idler gear out of metal?

What paddle tires/rims to run on the back of a XL ??
I was wondering those of you running sand paddles on the rear of your Savage XL what size and brand tire/rim you are using ? The stock tires are very tall so going to a smaller diameter paddletire in the rear will change the gear ratio between front/rear. Any tall paddles out there that fit the bill along with a suitable rim ?? If you are not smelling nitro fumes and listening to the sweet song

RE: First Kit.
If you like to tinker with things and you're mechanically inclined it shoulbe be no trouble at all. The instructions are very clear. For me I have have a lot of experience and I've only done kits. I just hate the idea of an RTR. But you can see just how well detailed and clear the instruction are. Just got gto the link to see a .pdf of them here: http://www.hpiracing.com/instructions/#Kits Its at the top in the middle for the Baja 5B SS kit.

RE: Anyone try this dual rear shock setup for the Baja?
ORIGINAL: sheograth I still feel like the rear could be stiffer on the baja platform sometimes. When under power you often get no decent steering.
You can just put on stiffer springs and/or heavier shock oil to do that.

RE: HOW ARE YOU COPING WITH THE ECONOMY?
By spending as little as possible because I will be unemployed starting on April 1st. I've been job searching since the begining of Feb. I got a few nibbles, no live interviews yet. Finding a new job means relocating and selling my house. I'm a manufacturing engineer at Cessna which went from boom to bust in no time flat. Who was that moron that said people shouldn't use business jets? He put thousands of people out of work. I've been laid off every job I ever had. Don't be an engineer unless its civil engineering. Anything involved with manufacturing a product is a guaranteed layoff.
