RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
That's great. Glad you have had good luck. My "FrankenVader" has done pretty well. Call it that bc of the ASC Tranny/Ball Diff. It's been a hoot on lipo. I hope you got my message on the dogbone spring pins. Mine worked out great. Wish DTX would get their supply line straight though. I guess the workers in China are getting tired of being used for slave labor so we can run our RC toys!. Regards NTR
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob check and tighten all screws.....open tranny (and diff) and add grease, they never put in enough....dump the shock fluid and put in 35wt.....get new tires and wheels if you're going off road....oh, and make DANG sure the bottom cap on the plastic shocks (where the shaft comes out) is tight, use blue loctite if you have to. If that sucker comes loose, it'll break the threads off and then you need new shocks. NTR - Way back up there somewhere, you asked how my tranny was holding up....it's doing great! It's sort of a bastard child, not stock, but not full BL either. I converted the slipper to an Associated-type, but I'm using the stock EXT2 top shaft/gear. And I installed the BL metal diff. My other Evader tranny is still bone stock, tho I'm waiting on a metal diff for it. Ordered it in FEBRUARY and STILL WAITING!!!
The good part is, EXT, EXT2 and BL parts are interchangeable for the most part. My EXT is at BL specs right now. I did order the Red/White and Blue EXT shell. The pins that go into the end of the dogbones. I got to searching bc mine were roached from a year of brushless abuse. I looked in my parts bin and I had one dogbone, but its pins were roached too. So I order from Tower, only to find the bones were backordered until late August.. <yikes> So I started looking. They were too long, but a dremel tool took care of that. RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
That is kind of what I figured. With a spring pin, you obviously have play so it compresses. But with a solid roll of wire there is none compression. When I was thinking about this as a solution, I thought back to my motocross days as a kid, when I replaced main bearings in my scoot. You had to heat up the center cases and freeze the bearings. When both parts were warm/cold enough, the bearing dropped into the aluminum case with a "snick" sound. They would come out again with the help of 10 ton press. Totally irrelevant. But if you are into wrenching, pretty cool nonetheless . . . .and proof that science IS cool. BTW - I went to my local hardware store here in Richmond Va, Pleasants Hardware which is in the ACE hardware lines, and found some tension springs for the dogbones. They were like 1.00 for 4 of them. That's pretty handy since the 'bones I ordered are on the Duratrax boat from ChengDu or where ever they make this stuff. Thanks NTR
ORIGINAL: cumquat slightly loose is ok because the channels in the wheel are closed at the ends. i used brass wire (.032 or something like that) folded over on my ext and they worked pretty well. I scored the whole DTX tranny on EBAY. The ASC tranny I have in mine has been great, but it's going to need a bit of work. Got the DTX tranny bc I would like to go back to stock tranny mounts etc. But I really have mixed emotions with DTX QC issues and all. We'll see. Thanks NTR
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob Harlow - Wow, you got the tire off the DTX wheels w/o destroying the wheel? Good on you! My buddy tried it and melted the wheel. NTR - No I haven't upgraded to the actual BL tranny from the BL Evader, but I HAVE installed the metal diff from the BL in ONE of my cars. Still waiting on DTX's Slow Boat From China for #2. It's really odd: when we first got these cars, stock brushed mind you, we were stripping top gears like crazy. Of course, THEY were in short supply too. Now that we've upgraded to BL systems, we haven't stripped one top gear yet! It's like, for a while, DTX's manufacturer lost the recipe for good hard metal and were putting out crap, but then they fixed it? I dunno. Now it's just the plastic diff cases that strip. The metal diff solves that problem. Will a nitro evader top shaft work in the electric? You'd have to check the specs. Dimentions, etc. RCLUGNUT10 may have info on that. EXT2Rob, Did you update to brushless tranny?? If so how is it holding up? EXT2Rob I'm glad that you got in contact with them, and they were helpful. There is a part of me that wants to see DTX do well. I guess I just root for the underdog. When I got my kid's vader in 2008, the fella at the LHS was trying to sell me anything but. We ran his vader out and promptly got one on Ebay. The only RC's we had had before were Tyco Turbo Bandits and Radio Shack stuff. So these were a big jump. In the end, LHS guy was right. We had a lot of days where my boy's would break or mine would break. And some days both would break! So, being an old motocrosser and a frusterated mechanical engineer, I sought to bulletproof our trucks. Now they fly and don't break. I have friend that saw our vaders' at Christmas this year. He was impressed with mine at the time. Wheelies, roost, probably about . . . 3/4 HP . He wanted one, but I did not recommend DTX. I said, for the money I spent on this, get an Associated / HPI /Traxxas . . . whatever. I did not want to see a friend of mine get this vehicle and get really pi$$ed with it . . and me for recommending it. Their QC and customer service issues have hurt them. You get enough owners saying stuff like that, and you won't be selling many Evaders. We still have ours. I recenlty went brushless on my kids. (TACON 3200 KV / EZRUN 35A) . . . Associated gear diff. We'll see how bulletproof it is now :) He's a maniac with it. We'll hold on to them bc they are a LOT of fun. But seeing what I've seen, I'm a "Friends don't let Friends drive Duratrax guy". Most people don't want to do what I've done. They want an RC truck that they can take out and RUN. If I was in the 1/8 scale market, i would not touch their new buggy either. I will say one thing though. The EXT shells are getting real beat up. I do like the graphics on the BL's. May have to get one. Best of luck with yours. NTR
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob I actually made contact with a rep at DuraTrax! In fact he CALLED me! Nice guy. We talked for about a half hour. He told me that he an a couple guys from R&D sat down with two tranny cases old and new and old & new tranny parts. They were able to assemble the new parts in the old tranny case no problem. He did say that a few months ago, they had a bad batch of tranny cases that were warped. And that they have gotten top gears that were not right. They will replace any such part. We talked about grease. He uses TrakPower grease himself. (was I right or was I right?) He asked if I had any othert issues with the car. Said that he's seen a lot of rear hub carrier issues, people breaking them. I've never had issues with them. Hobbico just bought Axial and Armra. They worked for two years on the new BL Vader. They even had some R&D guys running the new metal diff in a NITRO car, trying to destroy it. About the top gear being wider, he said, yep it is but it should fit the old case. He suggested EGbasher send his top gear and tranny case that he couldn't get to fit back to them for examination and that they'd send him a new one. He really was trying to be helpful. He appoligized for not answering all the questions in a recent email we spoke about. Admitting he dropped the ball on that. "From Christmas till about February we're absolutly slammed around here. No one gets a day off till after February." I can't remember all the stuff we talked about. But my opinion of DTX has gone up a few ticks.
RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
Good suggestion EXT2. Perhaps if they would spend a little time focusing on the consumer and QC and less time up with ways to make a snazzy "D" logo, there would be fewer disappointed people. They are really dumb if they don't have anyone looking at this board. There has been more R&D here than they have done on the evader.
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob Here is what I posted to DuraTrax's Suggestion Box, the only way I could find to contact them. ************************************** Dear DuraTrax/Hobbico, I am 53 yrs old. I have two Evaders. Love them. Learned a lot about the hobby. I've made upgrades to the cars over the last year, converted to LiPo & brushless and I'm having a blast with them. BUT, whenever I've had questions, I get more, useful, information from message boards than I do from YOU guys! I don't know who is answering your emails for you, but they're bloody lazy, and obviously don't really care about your customers. Both my buddy & I have sent questions to you, usually several questions in one email, and the replies we get only answer the first question and ignore the rest. And the Answer is usually not helpful or very informative, much less friendly and concerned. Do you not know about building relationships and making your customers feeling appreciated for buying your products? Does anyone there ever peruse the message boards like at RC Universe? Did you know there is an "Evader Coalition" there where users share info on how to make the car better? And what it's weak points are? You could learn a lot! It seems like maybe you have, since you've come out with the Brushless Evader, and made some changes to the transmission. (Thank You for the all-metal diff!) But do you guys know that you apparently have a Quality Control issue with whoever makes your gears? When my car was stock, I was tearing up Top Gears. Now, even tho I've gone brushless, no Top Gear issues. But we were stripping the plastic diff gear. A metal diff solved that, but based on what I've experienced and read on the boards, I think whoever makes the gears doesn't know how to alloy metal consistently. And speaking of Top Gears, why is the new one 3mm wider than the old one? It doesn't fit in the old case, and the new case has the same part number as the old one! W.T.F? These are the kinds of questions we have, yet, no one there seems interested enough to answer them. That apparent attitude is rather off-putting to the RC community. In this economy, I would think you'd be a little more motivated to cultivate new customers and build relationships with current ones. *********************************** We'll see what kind, if any, response I get, and if I do, I'll post the reply. Screw the "do not post this email" admonision in their emails. Customers have a right to know!
Had forgotten that hobbico owned AE. I thought that slipper looked pretty AEish. I figured they had patents on stuff like that. Duratrax probably came to the party late with that crappy slipper that they used to use. But if Hobbico owns AE and DTX then they can use whatever they want out of the AE inventory. As far as tranny gears, the AE plastic seems to thrive in a brushless envt, at least for what they put in the RC01's (3300kv motors) Shoot maybe they'll build Evaders that can use some of the cool aftermarket stuff that they sell for RC10's
ORIGINAL: cumquat it just occurred to me, hobbyco becomes the US dealer for thunder tiger, the owner of AE, and duratrax releases a new evader with the AE slipper. makes me wonder, will the evader get yet another revamp utilizing more AE derived parts, particularly the trans? only time will tell but i'm betting if they do, it will be announced at ihobby this year. W.T.F. DTX?? - I though about getting those CV's, but apparenlty they are the same pot metal that they make their other "metal" stuff with . . . . LOSI has CV's that look like they might fit, but I've had a couple of LOSIs before and they weren't anything to write home about either!
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob That idler gear looks very much like the top gears I've stripped in the past. Still makes me think that whoever DTX contracts to make these parts doesn't know how to formulate steel properly and consistently. Lack of quality control....... I'd write to DTX, but honestly, I don't think they give a crap. If they did, they'd have someone perusing these boards. I've written them in the past and I got the standard boiler-plate automated response. They could gather a S***load of good ideas, feedback and info just from this thread! NTR, My misunderstanding: I confused your comment about axles with the dogbones. I too, broke both my axles. Fortunately(?) I'd just gotten the DTX CV axles so I just installed them. However, last Friday when EGBasher came up for a race day, during a race, my car stopped after making the "I just broke a drive-pin" sound, only to find out it was the pin in the CV joint that broke!! I thought the car was out for the day, but I figured out that the body clips had the same diameter as the CV pin, so I was able to repair that one. Not much later, the other one gave out, and I fixed it the same way. Then yesterday, I had another pin in the CV fail. I also noted when I installed the CV axles that the dogbone end that fits into the diff drive cup just barely fits into the drive cup, like the axle shaft is 3-4mm too short. W.T.F DTX?? Now, EGBasher has had his CVs installed for 6mo, but he only runs about once a week. Still, his CVs have held up ok, but I managed to break mine in less than a week? TWICE? Sure I run a lot more than he does, but if you add up the hours put on his CVs vs hours on mine, his have lasted a lot longer. So again, is this due to quality control?
Honestly, I don't blame you. I would not recommend a BL evader to a friend. Mine only works BC I spent lots of time on it and well, around 250 bucks. The QC issue that DTX has is still a problem. I'm with EXT2Rob. DTX does not care. Enjoy your 4.1. You will be much happier.
ORIGINAL: cummins driver Well guys, im somewhat sad to report I sold my evader and its shipped out as of yesterday..... I like the truck itself extremely well. But at this point I dont trust the transmission. It looks like the new diff gear is a harder steel than the idler, which caused the idler to wear down and then wear down the top shaft while it was at it. I decided i wasnt spending $30 on the transmission to be a guinea pig for duratrax to let us down again, so its gone. On the other hand, my T4 which has a factory plastic diff gear and idler gear (steel top gear) is running pefect. The transmission is smooth as butter and I am running some much meatier tires on it than i was on the evader. It also has a ball differential and I have the same brushless in it that i had in my evader. It is running perfectly. I broke a carbon shock tower the previous owner installed, but an aluminum one was only $10 shipped and with a couple small upgrades this T4 should bash with the best of them. I am already confident that the transmission in it wont give me any trouble. Since the gears are a good nylon, they wont wear against each other and the thing is whisper quiet too. For anyone reading, Im going to highly reccomend to at least wait for some people to get some run time on a brushless evader before buying one. $250 is the same price at the brushless T4.1 which is already proven to be an awesome truck. Duratrax really needs to get in gear and fix the transmission on these trucks if they want to keep from dying off. The rest of the truck is already good, the transmission is mainly what needs fixing. Hopefully the issues JrockZ posted up with are because he didnt swap in all 3 new gears, but I also wouldnt be surprised if they havent upgraded the idler like they should have. My point though, is that no one knows how it'll work out yet. Just for kicks, here is my evaders replacement:
EXT2Rob you said " So do you suppose DTX gets "bad batches" of some of these parts that are sub-par" I have suspected this for a while based on my observations with axles. When I first went brushless, I snapped several like the pencils that they were. I was thinking "Great now the axles suck" . But then I got some that held up for a respectable amount of time. Looks like a QC issue to me. As for bad batches of spider gears, top shaft or whatever, who knows what DTX is thinking. All I can say is that they must take their products to a retirement home to test them out. They should just solicit a few peopl on this thread to be product testers. I'd do it for free.
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob
ORIGINAL: JRockZ well i ran about 8 packs at most through the evader with the new metal brushless gear and today i have stripping, have yet to take the trans apart but from close inspection it seems to be the spider gears inside the "new" metal diff i will post back when i get exact conformation!!
Oh dude, say it ain't so! I just put in my new BL diff and ran a couple packs in it. It was sweet! It even sounded better. And seemed smoother. I hope now that we all have gotten what we wanted (ALL metal diff) that the spyder gears don't turn out to be the weak link. Oddly enough, the old diff I took out felt pretty rough. I took it apart and it still had a good deal of grease, but I could see worn teeth. But I knew they were getting close to end of life anyway. I HOPE DTX has not screwed the pooch and let these new diffs be made out of some crap metal. Another observation: I haven't stripped a top gear in a long time. And when I inspected it again today, it was just fine. So do you suppose DTX gets "bad batches" of some of these parts that are sub-par? RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
Sorry to bug in on the thread . . . but wow . . . so you have the NEW metal tranny and you are still getting stripping?? That is lame. DTX could have anybody on this thread as a product designer/tester and gotten that right. I guess I'll be keeping the Associated trannys in my and my kid's vaders. Interestng point here is for $250, which is the MSRP on the Evader BL, and you could get a T4.1. No wonder the guy at my LHS pans DTX. We'll be keeping ours bc I probably have about 250 tied up in each one . . The are pretty bulletproof now. NTR
ORIGINAL: JRockZ well i ran about 8 packs at most through the evader with the new metal brushless gear and today i have stripping, have yet to take the trans apart but from close inspection it seems to be the spider gears inside the "new" metal diff i will post back when i get exact conformation!! RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
See my "grafting" desc on my prior post. I like the RPM revolvers with the Proline Calibers. (It's a pin tire)
ORIGINAL: EXT2Rob So what do you mean, exactly about "grafting" a B4 tranny onto the vader? I've read Lug's description of the project, but since I never saw pictures, I could never really visualise the details. The B4 doesnt use a gear diff, but a ball dif, right? There was something about Lug's description of the diff adjustment that put me off the idea of doing it myself. I have had very little issues with my tranny lately, even running a 5600kv SW, until I changed from Dirt Hawg IIs to Gladiators. Hoo boy! Did the Glads make the car controlable again! But it wasn't long before I stripped a gear INSIDE the diff! I fixed that, but I must;ve had the slipper too tight and I stripped the diff gear. I too would like to try the new metal-gear diff. The Gladiators are a superior tire for the vader if yer running in dirt and running fast. The Dirt Hawgs balooned-up too much and were too soft. The Glads are stiffer in the sidewalls and tread and don't balloon up like dragster slicks.
RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
I bought a T4/B4 ball diff off of ebay. For my job, I ditched the whole DTX tranny mount, got a piece of nylon from a cutting board and fabbed a new one. The reason I ditched the DTX mount was that there was nothing really to hook the associated tranny to. The new tranny mount hooks up exactly how the DTX mount hooked. The back mounts on the associated tranny are not a perfect match for the dtx motor plate, but some careful dremel work fixed that. Looks a little funny, but it's held up good. I've seen the pics of Pede's mods and they look pretty good too. When / if my solution fails I'd probably consider his. The gear diffs are sold bc they require less maint. than balls. The ball diff has worked fine for mine. Just have to tighten it every now and then. Don't know how it would hold up with a really powerful motor, but it's been fine with my 32KV Tacon. Pics of my mods are on Lug's site I believe .
ORIGINAL: pede_187 Hey Guys, how's it going. Long time no see.
I'm not sure if he did the same thing as I did, but a while back I put an RC10T4.1/B4.1/SC10 (which has a gear diff instead of the ball diff) trans in my Evader ST (which I have also been working on converting into a SCT for quite some time. It was fairly simple, All that was really needed was a little modification with the transmission mounts (at the bottom of the chassis as well as the trans mount attached to the shock tower). Check my pictures if you want to see what I did. http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii60/pede_kid/Evader%20Short%20Course%20Truck/Evader%20-%20%20RC10T4%20Transmission%20Mod/
RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
Heck - I figure for the money and time I put into my EXT I probably could have gotten a 4.1. The vader drives pretty good. It's got a lot of time on it now and it lacks theat "fresh feeling". I could probably replace some stuff and get that back. The shock eyes seem to get loose . . I've just been real impressed with Associated bc of that tranny I swapped into my vader. With a 32KV motor, I can run the slipper tight and do wheelies all day. No problems, not one rebuild yet. I was thinking that the rest of the truck would be real nice. NTR

RE: The Evader Coalition ~ T.E.C. Part 2.
CumminsDriver - Got a question to you and whomever else may want to chime in. I've worked most, if not all problems out on my EXT (2008 model) Tranny is bullet proof, I grafted an RC10B4 tranny into it . . . aluminum shocks, RPM wheels, proline tires, bearing, hi torque servo, brushless, lipo etc etc . . you get the pic . . . I've spent a lot of time and a few dollars on this truck. It has not broken on me for a while now, and it goes like a scalded cat. It's also my first hobby grade RC. I believe in one of your posts, you said you got an RC104.1. I have seen the rollers on Ebay. Brand new $138. I am intrigued. How much better is this truck REALLY than an EXT? I'm not unhappy with the EXT. The RC10 looks easier to work on (steering), looks more sexy. My guess is the shocks are better than what I have . . Thoughts? Thanks NTR
