RE: Sig Kavalier Build
Chris, Looks really nice, By any chance are you going to try and maiden the plane this weekend. Looking to make a stop at Tom's on my way home tomorrow. Still looking at some options. P-40 or the Sea Fury Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Looks like we are going to be building in this area. First snow was on the ground this morning. I suspect there will be a couple of opportune days left but they are definitely numbered. Going to start a Top FLight P40 I believe in two weeks. Z

RE: How many times do you crash?
Well in 18 months in this hobby I have totaled one plane trying to fly inverted for the first time 20 ft off of the ground. Lets just say that it was a very nice punt. Had to dig the engine out of the ground. And a couple of week ago I stalled on take off and broke the wing in half. It was repairable and flew again last week. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Drube, Went flying yesterday and just had to add some aileron trim for the wing rebuild and two clicks nose down trim. No problems with the extra fiberglass and epoxy I used. Took off and landed very nice. I would not worry about the extra weight. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Drube, I wondered that myself. I always intended on fiberglass reinforcing most of the cowl. Didn't do it initially. Even though with a .46 my CG came out right on. I have ended up laying fiberglass in almost the whole cowling you should be able to see in one of the pictures. At a minimum Fiberglass the seam where the two ABS pieces meet and where the muffler cutout is. In a summer of flying one stall and a couple of nose scuffs these were the problem areas. Even if you never put the plane on its nose I believe the block mounts alone will leave you with cracks eventually. I do not believe it has added too much weight. The larger wheels I have been using with Robart covers add alot more than .5 oz of epoxy and probally .5 oz of glass has. Others may disagree but I do not have any worries at the moment. The aftermarket glass cowling would weigh more than the reinforcing has. Just my opinion. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
JM, I will try and explain this as best I can. The dowl mounting of the blocks is not in the manual-"another builders experience shared with me." 1. So you align the blocks per the instruction. 2. Prior to expoxying them *temporarily* adhere the block to the firewall where it is desired to sit . Then drill a hole the diameter of the dowl to be used. I believe my diameter dowl was right around 1/8". 3. Once the holes are drilled remove the blocks fromt the firewall and expoxy the dowls into the block you want almost a 3/8" of dowl out of the back of the mounting block. That may seem like alot it could be a little shorter. The purpose is to provide more bonding to the firewall so you want the dowl to go all the way through the firewall. 4. Once the dowl epoxy is dry then mount the blocks to the firewall with more 30 min epoxy. Make sure the block are expoxied entirely to fuel proof them. Hope this helps. If not let me know. Z

The Pilot Says there is not much to see from the cockpit.[:D] But I took one from that viewpoint and one from the front this should give you some help. If not let me know. I had a heck of a time finding a pilot. FYI this one I got from the Hobby People http://www.hobbypeople.net for $10. Painted it and had to form a Balsa Torso to get him to sit up a little. It comes prepainted but I wanted the Tropical Uniform colors of that era in the Pacific. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Z

Drube, I have not flown the corsair on G4.5 but this one flies like the sportster I believe it is. Two more pics of the wing covered. And to give credit where due my buddy was the one who covered for me. He is much better at it than I.

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Well for anyone wondering about the wing rekit- (Not many I am sure) [:D] I have some pics. Basically all I have to do is cover a panel or two on the wing again and tommorow she flies. I do have a picture of the cowling work I did. It really took a beating when the plane stalled. But it was starting to crack and fail before that. I am not sure how it is going to hold up but I fiberglassed the whole area where the cowl flaps are and below where my pitts muffler cut out is. I recommend to beef this area up the vibration alone was causing stress fractures in certain areas. I stop drilled holes on the fractures to prevent more migration. A builder I fly with recommended if there is room to coat the top of the mounting block with RTV. Right now it feels stout and beefy and I believe it will hold up well. Here is a picture or two and you can judge for yourself. Notice the one area that is white. This whole piece broke off. For future reference possibly I repaired by forming the fiberglass to work as a patch then filled with 30min epoxy and Micro Balloons. I think it turned out rather well. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Ski, I have the .46 AX in this and it is a screamer. There is more than enough power on demand. I know some pilots have put Saito 4 strokes in this plane but I am not sure what size and how it went for them. I suppose you could put a larger engine in this just fine but I personally feel that it would be a waste of power and extra expense for the larger size. If those are not an object then why not. This is a strong bird so I do not think there would be a problem with the plane's integrity. The Firewall might be my only concern. There is a picture on the crash and rebuild forum that of a Hanger 9 Corsair that was way overpowered and basically twisted off of the firewall here is the link http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=8935554. I do not think that is a problem with this plane. I probally would not put anything bigger than a .60 in this. Just 2 cents from the cheap seats. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Ski, You should really like this build. The instructions are almost right on the money. This was my first build ever and I made plenty of rookie mistakes but was able to overcome them with good advice from a experienced builder. Take care towards the later stages they stop holding your hand towards the end. This plane flies great, fast , no bad habits and will allow you to make small mistakes on landing and takeoff. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
drube, At the hole and moving toward the far end of the Block remove in small amounts widen the hole area the reason is room needs to be made for the bend of the gear wire so it will lay flat along the rest of the block. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
jm and Drube, On sheeting trust the instructions they are right on. I did not follow them closely and ran short on balsa sheeting and had to purchase 2 couple extra along the way. They maximize the sheets so no extra is really available. My mistake was I just keep working off of one sheet till I could not use it anymore. TRUST THE INSTRUCTIONS on this build it will save a trip or two to the LHS. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Hey Drube, I think I figured out where the sheeting is used. It is when you stall your plane in takeoff in a stiff crosswind and decide to compromise the wing.[:@] Nordicz

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
I have gotten to thinking one thing I would do over is the cowling. CRJDriver suggested that I go with a Fiberglass cowling vs the provided ABS. The company he refered me to is....http://www.aerofibertech.com/products.html. They have a after market cowling that in my opinion would stand up better than the provided ABS. I did not want to spend the money outright. But the my corsair now has over 25 flights on it and I have repaired the cowling 5 times ( all near the pitts muffler the weakest link in the cowling due to this is where the two pieces come together) and the mounting blocks 3 times. The blocks are a direct result of not keeping it off of it's chin-my fault. A second thing you may want to consider is dowl mounting the blocks this was a CRJDriver suggestion that I am glad I took. I have provided a couple of pictures. Z

RE: GP F4U Corsair .40
Hi Jm, I finished this build (my first) in May. I did not have to add any weight to the front end with a .46 OS AX as my powerplant. This thing will scream especially with a .55. She flies straight and true. I did have one lesson learned on this build that seemed significant. When you get to the building and shaping of the turtle deck and tail section. Steps D3-D8 Page 28 of the online manual. They have you remove the horizontal Stab. Later when it came to mounting the stab we found there was no way to accomplish this with the elevator joiner wire out of the assembly. We ended up having to cut an access in the tail section to add the joiner. I did not think ahead on this step and I believe you would want the horizontal stab in place when you build up the stab block. You may get away with just having the joiner wire in place but I am not sure. I would suggest playing with it prior to that step. I cringed after all the sanding and shaping to having to take my saw and cut that access. One other lesson learned. The 2 3/4" wheels are rather small. Probally close to scale but every landing has a tendency to nose over. Might be my young skills but larger wheels really helped grease landings. Here are a couple of pics of the finished plane.

Deadeye, My mistake the field you are looking at is our second field in the area. I did not recognize it because the capture is older than the crosswind runway the club put in. I maidened my winter build there in May. Go just a little more South West and that is the site. Nordicz

Thanks Fizzmaster, I didn't take them but by the smile on my face I can say I felt really good that day. But I really have to hand it to my instructor and all the help he gave me. My first attempt on the buddy box I thought this is going to not be good. Some sim time and a couple more attempts and I was off and running. The field can be seen from Google Earth it is SouthWest of Owatonna MN, The nearest intersection I believe is 48th st. and Lemond or CR7. Tim Johnson owns the field and it is the Southeast Minnesota Model Aircraft Club. Here is the web site addresss. www.smmac.com Nordicz
