RE: .60 size Pattern Tiporare Build
I dug the Hippo Tipo out of it's 25 year hiding place today and low and behold the G series radio equipment was still in it. I even found the Gold transmitter. So I snapped a few pictures of it in my studio. Too close in here but you get the idea. You can see where the paint is pealing off the fuselage. It's dirty and has cobwebs but it's structurally sound and the Rossi while sticky still turns over. Check it out.[image][/image]

RE: .60 size Pattern Tiporare Build
From 1974 to 1987 I went through a few pattern planes. A Vertigo with a ST blue head 60, Atlanta with an HP61 Gold Cup, Vega 40 size with an HP 40, A UFO with a Rossi 60, a couple Kaos 60s The Hippo Tipo I now still have, A Saturn with a Rossi all these were piped and there's a few more that I'd have to get the pictures out on to identify. There's a pattern meet coming up up here in Upstate Ny. I'm wondering if the Classic craze has hit the Syracuse area yet. There's also one at Blue Swan airport in Athens, Pa this summer or there used to be which isn't far from here. Looks like I need to show up at these memory makers. I'll bet it'll be as much fun or maybe more fun then it was back then. Used to be the highlight of my summers.

I don't know if you guys remember it or not but there was also a Hippo Tipo with a recess in the fuselage for the tuned pipe. I have a Hippo Tipo with a piped Rossi. It's a great flying plane and I'm going to restore it. It has some cracks in the paint and it needs a good cleaning anyway. Jay.

See now, your willing to toss all the guys under the bus that don't want to belong to ama or some other cbo. Maybe they just want to go out in their field an fly by their self.
I do not belong to AMA. Never have. I fly off my own private field as do my friends. We've been flying together for over 36 years. Never had so much as a radio problem or a midair. No matter what the government comes up with we will still be flying. Back when we started we needed a license for out transmitters. This will not stop us. We own the field and we have the right to fly in the airspace above it.

Field bench
Would any of you have a set of plans or pictures of a field bench? I've seen one in some pictures that looked sort of like a weight lifting bench in a T shape. Has uprights to hold the plane while you start the engine. Anything would be appreciated.[8D] Jay.

RE: Crashed my first flight
With a tail dragger if you have to force the tail to rise on takeoff you can bet the plane is tail heavy. A properly balanced plane will raise the tail about 1/3 way through it's takeoff roll. If it's tail heavy your elevator response will be very quick making the plane porpoise. When this happens chop the throttle and drop the nose to regain airspeed and set it up on short final and land. Re balance the plane per the plans or instructions. Usually 1/3 of the wing cord measured at the fuselage center will get you into the ball park.

Funny no one has mentioned the Spitfire as it is has good flight characteristics and is similar to that of the P-47. Both use a similar Eliptical wing and are very forgiving. Except the Spitfire has closer gear spacing so would be a little more difficult on landings.
I was going to say Spitfire. I wouldn't say easy but Pilot friendly is a better term. I bought a Sig Kadet Sr on eBay and got screwed. It was listed as NIB but when I got it, it had been started and the ribs and stringers for the right wing panel were missing. The plans had Sig Bond all over them. So I ordered a wing kit from Sig. I started to frame up the wing today and the die cutting on the ribs is terrible. Some are even split. The slots for the stringers are cut too big on some. I'm very disappointed.

Well, The very first time I had experience with a model plane was about 1964-65 when I got a Cox PT19 control line for my birthday. I started it in my bedroom and it got away from me and went under the bed and it tore my box springs to shreds. My Mom wasn't happy at all. I think I still have the motor from that plane somewhere in the attic.

This doesn't happen to me everyday. Unbelievably, a coworker gave me a new, never flown, never ran, Hobbico Superstar Mk II. Came with the radio, glow starter, even a gallon of fuel. Another coworker gave it to him because his wife said "it's too big, it needs to go!" so that guy never flew it. My EX wife gave me almost the same ORDERS. Got rid of the wife. Kept the planes!
ORIGINAL: tailskid Sig has to do what Sig has to do in order to survive! I wonder how the (CA) glue mfg. are doing...not a whole lot of building going on nowadays.
This is true. The development of ARF and RTFs has put a large damper on building. Once was a time not too long ago that if you wanted to fly you built a plane from scratch or built from a kit. Now the kids sit in front of their video games and computers and don't learn the basics of building an aircraft or the satisfaction of watching it take to the air for the first time when a few weeks before it was a pile of balsa in a cardboard box. Sad in a way. Companies like Sig made the dream of flight happen for a lot of us. The times they are a change'n.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
ORIGINAL: WacoNut Hi Guys, I have always been bad about looking for the next project before I finish what I have on the table and this time is no exception. I have always liked the Proctor Curtis Jenny. Now that I have the 1/4 and 1/3 Waco a 1/6 model just seems too small. I ordered a set of plans from Proctor a couple of months ago and after looking them over and cruntching the numbers I have scanned them in and printed them out at 200% to 33% scale. This gives the plane a 174.5'' span and a fuse length of 108''. The icing on the cake is I have exchanged e-mails with a gentleman who is restoring an original Jenny and he has sent me a copy of all the factory Curtis drawings for all the metal fittings on the Jenny. My nephew is putting them all into CAD and machining the fitting for me out of .030 brass sheet stock. By the time I have the Waco finished I will be ready to start my 1/3 Jenny reproduction, exact scale right down to the last nut and bolt. The only thing that won't be scale is the engine and radio. Off to sand on the Waco!! Anthony
I will be watching the Jenny build if you do it here. I live just 10 miles from the Glenn Curtis Museum in Hammondsport, Ny. The birthplace of the Jenny, Curtis Robin and the P-40. among others. Not many people know that Glenn Curtis started out building bicycles and racing motorcycles. He was once known as "The Fastest Man on Earth". The billboard in Hammondsport says so.

The very first time.
Everyone remembers their first time(flying R/C). Tell us about your first time at the sticks. I'll start. In 1974 a friend I haden't seen in a while dropped by and the usual conversation started "What you been up to"? He said he had been flying Radio control planes and he asked me to join him and a friend flying off a lake in upstste Ny. So we went to the lake. The temp was about 20 degrees that day but no wind. After watching him and his friend fly their planes the friend asked me if I'd like to try it. Reluctently I accepted his invitation to have a go at it. Back then there were no buddy boxes. He was flying a Swizzle Stik 40 with a Fox 40 and EK Logictrol single stick radio. He kept an eye on me and I was doing pretty good for a while then my friend Tom asked him a building question or something and that's when all went sour. He took his attention off me and the next thing I knew the Swizzle Stik was in a series of tight loops that I could not get it out of. I hollered HEY Al!! And before he could get to me I looped that Stik into a tree in front of a cottage. The sound was deffening. Like throwing pebbles into a spinning fan. Then silence. He looked at me and started laughing. I felt terrible. I offered to buy the mess right there. He said I didn't have to but just help him retrive the plane off the ice. The ice was thin close to shore there because of a creek that flowed into the lake but we walked over there and began picking up all the pieces. Now there arn't meny pieces to a Swizzle Stik but the servos and reciever were blown completely out of the box fuse. We started to retrive the radio components ahd that's when we found out just how thin that ice really was. Al went through the ice into about 5 feet of water. I grabbed his hand and pulled him out. Then Al says "Where's Tom"? We looked out over the ice and he was running for the opposit shore hell bent for election. We laughed our a**es off. The three of us are still friends and I fly with them both. Tom lives in Ny and Al lives in Alabama. I'm in Ny but visit Alabama as much as I can. I'm going there next week to see Al and fly with him. I bought the radio and motor and also the flight equipment from him that day for $175.00. I had to take the servos and reciever to Lon's R/C in Mattydale, Ny for repairs. That radio served me well for many years. So common guys tell your tales. It'll be fun. Jay.

I buy a lot of things from Sig so I'm used to their site. I just out of curiosity looked up a wing kit for a Kadet Sr and it took 8 clicks on the left product bar just to get to it. I didn't realise it before because I'm used to it. For beginners or impatient people that can be the difference between buying from Sig or buying elsewhere. Their products are second to none but their site needs revamping. Jay.

I'd go back to EK Logictrol or Kraft or MRC all single sticks if I could. I think it contributed to the untimely demise of my so called marrage.
