RE: Goldberg Extra 300
ORIGINAL: Twin_Flyer Recently got one of these planes framed up but unfinished. Was planning a DLE 20 in it, but I also have an OS 120 Surpass with pump and a YS 120 looking for a home. leaning to the gasser as it will less expensive to fly later. What are you guys putting the CG? where is called for? What about Air/Elev throws? What about the stock landing gear? Use it or go with an aftermarket one, if one is still made today. Not keen on that balsa glued to the skinny wires look... Thanks, Bill S.
Bill, Either of those engines would be great in this Extra. I set the CG and throws per the plans. TnT makes an after market landing gear that fits and works great, i recommend the 3/16" version http://www.tntlandinggear.com/Product_List_Gear.htm

RE: Gas mix for a 35cc Quadra
Yours is a gasoline engine. The picture is the fuel mixture for a glow engine. There are many discussions regarding types of oils and ratios. Personally i would go with a mid grade gasoline and Red Line oil at 40:1, that is 3.2 ounces of oil for every gallon of gasoline. However, any good oil at 32:1 to 40:1 will be fine. For example Lawn Boy or Stihl, etc. Do not add any other oils or nitro.

RE: Great Planes Extra 330L Build
No, the bolt does not go all the way through. The hard wood block and the tube are both tapped. I will use some thread lock or a small amount of CA when assembling at the field for added insurance. Initially i had the bolt going in from the top and the wood that carried the bolt is still there that is what you may be seeing that makes you think the bolt goes all the way through.

Wing bolts now from the bottom. It was a simple change, i will buy some socket head cap screws to replace these slotted machine screws, they are all i have that are long enough for the moment.

RE: Great Planes Extra 330L Build
Looks great. You have made a lot of progress. I had the small gap too and the rear of the stabs, i sanded the root rib with a large sanding block to eliminate the gap. I plan to glue the rear stabs in place once the covering is complete. Also taking a quick step back on the wing panels to bring the attachment bolts from the bottom of the wing. It will be a bit more of a hassle at the field but i think it will look better in the end. I discussed with my son (2 times Scale Nationals winner) last weekend when he visited for the Scale Masters contest. He agreed that would be a good change. I will post some pictures soon, one wing panel is nearly complete. In the instruction manual there is a mention of the wing panels gapping to the fuse, mine do too. However, the outer fuse sheeting will eliminate the need to make any changes to that. The weather has been very good here lately so work on the 330 is progressing slowly.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
I saw one of these fly at a Scale Masters event several years ago with two O.S. 1.08's for power, it flew great and if i recall correctly they were totally concealed within the cowlings. This is a beautiful subject but the gassers sticking out the bottom of the cowls take away some of that..... just IMHO.

Will do my best and PM the contact information. To me, the attraction is the character this plane has, it has a lot of character and it is unique from a modeling perspective because not many build this one.

RE: Don Smith HENSCHEL 129B
I have seen one fly. I am relatively sure it was the 111" version, it has been a few years ago. It flew great. It appeared to be a gentle flyer with no bad habits. I may be able to contact the builder (i have not seen him for a couple of years) and get you two connected. Let me know if you like me to give that a try.

I vote for 2 also. Not only adds some additional insurance it also snugs up the fuse on both sides helping to any gaps that may exist.

I am not a gasoline engine expert by any means but we have never had return springs on our glow engines so why do we really need it on a gasoline engine?

RE: Great Planes Extra 330L Build
After weighing the frame up today, then allowing 2 pounds for covering (may be a bit too much) and 3 pounds for radio equipment, sounds a bit heavy too but it will have a smoke system and 4 battery packs. The frame up with the DLE-111 comes in at 21 pounds 14 ounces. So, the estimated total weight is ~27 pounds. Did start covering one of the elevators today.

RE: Servo size?
Will you will be fine with your servos especially at 6.0 volts. We tend to go overboard with servo torque requirements these days. The old rule of thumb is one ounce of torque per one square inch of control surface. For sport flying that rule of thumb is a good guideline.

No, i haven't made any attempts to balance it just yet. It is fully ready to cover but since we have had some decent flying weather i have not started. Based on the weather forecast for our area this weekend though, it looks like it may be a chance to get started.

I have 6 of these great engines, 2 are still new in the box and hope to keep them there for a few years yet. I agree, any good 2 cycle fuel is fine. I run Wildcat 15% 2/4 cycle in mine with a 16 X 6 wood prop.

RE: Whats up with kits?
IMHO if the arf's continue to go up in cost there seems to be more and more folks interested in returning to or getting started in kit building. If this trend continues, I suspect some of the smaller kit manufacturers may take another shot at the market over the next year or two. It is up to all of the flyers to help keep them in business. This is merely speculation, there are no crystal balls. [:)] ARF's have their place but there is nothing more satisfying to see your own kit or scratch built plane take to the air.

RE: Looking for my 1st build.
I agree with the Sig Kadet as a starter for building and flying. Great kit and good flying plane. Actually that is what i soloed with in the 1979. It is hard to beat O.S. quality especially in a 2 stroke glow engine. In my opinion, you are in the most fun part of the hobby, starting out, a lot to learn both building and flying. I am not sure where you are located from Columbus, IN but there is a big bird there this Saturday, August 11th. In the past it has been well attended, it would give you an opportunity to talk to a lot of folks and see some great planes.
