RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Huh, imagine that. I always thought it was a fan like the FW-190; even the "blades" looked like they have pitch on them. Thanks for the correction guys. Now that you all have stated so, I see in a couple of Google pictures where the vents are fully closed. I should have clued in because it was only in August when I was a local airshow and there were 2 Nangchang CJ-6s on display which have the same cowl vents. Good to know that Gene's spinner will cover in most of the cowl. Cheers, Peter

Also, I see a few who installed the false radial engine inserts in their La-7, but has anyone attempted the engine coolingl fan as found in the real La-7? Cheers, Peter
ORIGINAL: Kiwi Bandit Hi guys.. I have a robart tail retract in my LA_7 IF Anyone is interested I can post some photos of the install. I made a few mods to the system to make it move thru more range of travel. I have a video of it in operation on utube if you care to see it. Just look up nzkiwibandit It's great to see all the good ideas coming thru for this model. once it is flying you will be very satisfied.
Absolutely!

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
The Sierra/Lado setup is definitely not cheap; a little over my budget. I will probably will wait for the ESM Ver 3 retracts also. I just ordered the same spinner from Gene Barton. He says it is 4.6" diameter and is a cut off of the ME335 nose cone. Like most in this thread, I will be ordering the cockpit from Tomas at VQ Warbirds. I really would like to do a retracting tail wheel setup. I was planning on using the same Robart retracting tailwheel setup I installed in my ESM Typhoon. However, I would like to see what others have installed. I'm really excited to start this project; hopefully the model arrives at the end of the week. I plan on going electric with a HK Rotomax 50cc brushless, a 180amp ESC, and 12S lipos, all spinning a 3 blade prop. Cheers, Peter

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
Hey Joe, Exactly what issues did you run into with the ESM retracts? I read through your build but I didn't see anything on those. I picked up a NIB LA-7 for $300 this week and I was planning on picking up a set of Gen 2 ESM electric retracts from VQ Warbirds. If there are issues with them please tell. BTW, sorry fo not being able to make it to your Warbird Funfly this year, but unfortunately, life got in the way and I have had no time for the hobby this summer. Things are squared away now and I'm hoping to get back to building some models including my ESM Hurricane I bought last year and the LA-7. Cheers, Peter

RE: ESM LA-7 From VQ Warbirds
ORIGINAL: Joespeeder Hey Guys, I painted the yellow band on the tail and the stars off the bottom using warbird colors RML blue. I like the miss matching of the blues on the bottom and once I get the German crosses on there it will look really good. I'm thinking I'll do the yellow wing tips on the bottom as shown on the paper model. When I look at the Luftwaffe Archives photo of this plane it looks like you can see a surface change on the bottom of the wing tips and it will help with visualizing what the LA-5 is doing in the air for me. I'm thinking I'll get both flat and satin clear coats from Lowes to highlight the various paint areas. Russian paint will be flat, German paint will be satin or a mix of satin and flat, and the silver exhaust area will be left the ESM texture. I'll paint in the exhaust with an airbrush and then flat over the exhaust. Here's the progress this far. Joe
Hey Joe, What's the staus on your LA-7 project? You haven't posted anything about it in some time. Cheers, Peter

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Here's my Seagull Models (E-Scale) Seafire that I electrified. It's a .90 size with a 64.6" wingspan weighing in at 11lbs. It is powered by an E-Flite Power 90, CC Phoenix ICE 75AMP ESC, and 8S lipos. It comes with British ensignia, but I customized mine in Royal Canadian Navy colours with decals purchased from Callie Graphics. Flight charactistics are great with no nasty surprises. The plane lands easy and even though it has flaps, they are not required. And a video of the Seafire in flight.... vimeo.com/27892478 Cheers, Peter
ORIGINAL: m_saraga If your dealer is wiling to us the USPS parcel service, the freight will be extremely low, and the customs service reasonable as well. Regards.
Unfortunately, the packages these models come in are over USPS's size restrictions for international shipping, that's why US dealers can/will only ship courier. Cheers, Peter

Interesting.... This sounds much like what happened to another model hobby; the real scale locomotive manufacturers were asking for outlandish licencing fees that it almost sank the model railroad industry. Peter

RE: Shipping problems
Daniel, I definitely feel your pain on this one. Last year I wanted to buy the ESM 73" Hawker Typhoon and 80" Hurricane from VQ Models out of Texas and ran into the same issues with shipping costs. I found out due to size restrictions, USPS will not ship internationally. I ended up getting them from Andrew at KMP for a fraction of the shipping price (around $50.00 each by Greyhound.) That's when Andrew was back into ESM Models which brings up my question; KMP is not carrying ESM anymore? This must be something relatively new?? I guess we Canadians are out of luck again on these wonderful models. For other large models I have ordered through the UK because they will ship Royal Mail (usually around $120.00CAD.) which is much more cheaper than courier. However, YT International who sells and distributes ESM over there is very expensive (ESM P-39 = $650.00CAD.) Courier from the States maybe your only option. Cheers, Peter

RE: Seagull NEW Supermarine Spitfire AKA Seafire!
ORIGINAL: nsv257 has anybody struggled to get c of g right using a 91 sized engine? seems way of 90 mm back of leading edge at wing root, at this set up it carries more lead than motor.
You are going to have to add weight to the nose. I figure a .91 size engine weighs anywhere from 20- 23 oz? The Power 90 with ESC weighs in approximately 19 - 20 oz. and the batteries weighing approxiately 1.5 -1.75 lbs which are where the fuel tank would be. On my maiden, I inadvertently had the CG at 100mm and the plane was way too tail heavy and almost impossible to fly. It was a tense 2 minutes trying to land the plane safely. I moved the servo tray forward to the next bulkhead in order to move the weight of the servos as far forward as possible, but I still had to add approximately 12 oz to the nose in order to hit the 90mm CG mark. The plane now weighs approx 11 lbs, but it flies great. Cheers, Peter

RE: NEW Seagull Dewoitine ARF ?
I would also agree that the DLE 20 would be a good fit for this model. I had been flying this model since last year using electric power ( a Power 90, CC ICE 100A ESC, using 8S lipos.) Ideally, I should have gone with a 110 or 120 size motor, but even with the Power 90, it flew nicely and scale like. Just recently ordered another airframe from the LHS. Video: http://vimeo.com/27894934 Cheers, Peter
ORIGINAL: Kostas1 Awesome Peter! Flimsy retracts;
Yes, flimsy retracts. 2 major problems with this particular set: 1. Even though the brackets are metal, the trunions inside are plastic and prone to cracking. 2. These have spring suspension struts, but they are thin walled and are only held in place by 3 small grub screws. One hard landing and they fold like tissue paper. Cheers, Peter

RE: Seagull NEW Supermarine Spitfire AKA Seafire!
I purchased this model from a hobby shop in the UK (unfortunately, it is not currently available in North America.) I eletrified my version using a Power 90, a CC ICE 75A ESC, 8S 5000mAh lipos, spinning a 15x10 prop. The model itself flies great with no apprarent bad habits. Although it has flaps, they are not required as the plane handles very well at slow speeds. My only gripe is about the crappy retracts that Seagull Models insists on using in their ARFs. They are absolute junk and I would recommend replacing them with an higher quality set. Yes, it is a standoff scale/sport scale model as all of Seagull's models are, but as mentioned, it has the basic lines of a Seafire and a little scale modding can turn into something a little more appealling. Currently, I am building a set of engine blisters and have applied Callie decals to make it look more like a Royal Canadian Navy Mk XV. Regardless, in the air the plane looks fantastic! I have attached some photos and a video below. RE: YT KMP Hawker Typhoon
Glenn, Great write up on your Typhoon and I'm glad to hear it flies extremely well. I was a little worried myself how this model would fly at such a weight. I purchased one , the all composite version, from KMP back in August and it will be my winter project and I plan on electrifying it. It will be running a brushless motor equivelant to a 160 size engine and using 10S lipos. I have purchase a Robart retractable tailwheel assembly to give it added scale looks, plus I will be ordering the cannon set also. Hopefully when finished, it will fly as well as yours. Kwik, Beautiful in flight pictures of your Typhoon. Love the working hardpoints under the wings; I may have to pick up a set for mine. Cheers, Peter
ORIGINAL: flytaildragger Just a minor announcement that KMP is distributing ESM products in Canada only again. It will all settle in the wash.
That is awesome news for us Canadians! Ordering these large warbirds from dealers in the US is cost prohibitive at best. Shipping is as much as the kits themselves. I was so excited to hear this news from Andrew that I put down a deposit with KMP for the LA-7 and will be doing so on the Hurricane also. (The wife is going to kill me.) Cheers, Peter
