RE: New S.F. Bay Area Club
Hey Mike and Dan! I am in Vacaville and I just sent Dan an email expressing my interest in joining the club. We have been toying with the idea of soliciting the City of Vacaville for similar reasons and our initial phone calls have come up dry. Dan knows how small the landing strip my "club" has been using and conned me into checking you guys out. I think your site will suffice[;)]. Regards, -Todd (a.k.a. Wannabe on RCgroups)

RE: Transall C-160
John, I am with you on the landing gear. I agonized over that exact same issue for the exact same reasons. You can read about my obsession with the LG earlier in thei sthread. I have learned that there are two diffent Chineese sweat shops that produce the C-160. One is CMP and the other is a no name. I have the no name version and it have dorky looking landing gear. The CMP one seems to be a little more reasonable. I ended up lowering my plane by about an inch. Look at the pictures I posted in posts #61, 68, 86, 118 earlier in this thread to see how mine turned out. I actually cut the plates for the main gear and re-epoxied them higher in the fuse. I set out to make retracts but settled for a lowrider with stock wheels. The plane just started getting heavy so I figured I would make it look as nice as I could without overloading it. -Todd

Hey guys, I have been away from this thread for awhile. I just thought I would share a couple of nice photos of my AK C-160. I have about 50 minutes on her now. A pucker every second[sm=stupid.gif]. Hey Edd, I saw you over on my OV-10 build thread. Thanks for stopping by and reporting the mirage-o-meter reading. I hope you can see the radome on that thing by now.....[:)]

RE: Transall C-160
I use an AstroFlight 109. You need a charger with a digital readout to tell. At least I do. If there is a math formula to figure it out, I dont know it. I was told there would be no math in this hobby. On the astro 109, the digital readout climbs while charging and when it is complete the figure in the window is how many mAh the battery took. -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
My condolances, Al. Believe me, I know how you must feel. Ok, four blade propeller report: I put the 9x6 APC four blade props on first. I did some taxi testing and felt it was not going to give enough power for flight. It then put the 10x6 APC four blades on. I most definitely would have crashed on take off with the 9x6 props because the 10x6ers had to go full power to get off the ground. It was actually a beautiful scale take off angle however, I needed between 100% and about 95% throttle to keep the plane in the air. Anything below 95% and it would want to stall. Comparing this with the 11x5.5 two blade props I used for my first flight I had fully half of the stick travel to fly with. After an exactly 10 minute flight, the 10x6 four blade props sucked 6800 milliamps from the 8000 MaH pack. Compare this with the 11x5.5s in a 6 minute flight only took 2200 MaH from the pack. I was told by the owner of APC not to use the four blade props because they were too inefficient. He has discontinued them because everyone hated them. I still decided to see for myself. He was right, they do indeed suck. Conclusion is the 11x5.5s are the way to go with the AXI 2820/10 setup. Van, On "Transtall" #2 dont lower the fuse too much. The 11 inch props are just a little too close to the ground on my lowrider. And yes, I did say TranStall. Anyway, sucsessful flight number two for me today. Very gusty winds today but the 8 lb Tranny dose not care about such trivial things. I did some nice low slow (as possible without hitting the ground like a bag of wet cement) passes over the runway and got some applause form the decerning cowd. My Coast Guard paint scheme is a hit! It most definitely need flaps for landing though...... -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
Van, Maybe mine is not a CMP then. Come to think of it, I never saw any logo on the box at all. Mine is from AK Models also. It the same as your new one. It had blue leaing edges and red wing tips. Also the plug in horiz stab. You will see what I mean about the nacells. Although the glass has a very 'hand laid' look to it. Because of the variation, your nacells might fit. Or one will and others wont, etc. Sunday is next flight! I'm going to try 9x6 four blade props this time.

RE: Transall C-160
Yea, the quality of the CMP fiberglass was crap. The plywood motor mounts seem to be nice and perpendicular to the chord but the fiberglass nacells will drive you nuts trying to center them on the motors. I had to grind off so much of the flanged part on the bottom it left very little fiberglass left. My nacells are still not perfectly concentric but it only bothers me because no one else can notice. I too had a hairline crack just above and behind the horz stab on the port side. I did not notice it untiil it was time to glue the empenage. I spent a lot of time designing retracts before gluing anything to the fuse and I may have cracked it myself. My crack was just a hairline so thin CA took care of it. It is nearly invisible now. I am going to take mine to the glo field for the second flight. 600' of paved runway will make landing this BUFF rocket easier. Maybe I can find a cameraman who isnt stoned there too. -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
Al I have a digital video camera so I can simply plug it in to a USB port (I'm sure your Sony can do the same) and Windows XP automatically starts the Microsoft Movie Maker preogram which comes on all Windows XP versions. After that its all about reading the help file[;)] Basically, you drag clips of video that are automaticaly separated based on when you pushed Record button (the red one) and when you stopped recording. You drag these clips onto a 'timeline' where you can cut and edit the video to your liking. The you use the good ol' File - Save As function just like any other software has and it walks you through the rest. Next you have to find a web hosting place like the one Van uses or the one I like which is RCpics. It took me months to figure it out on my own. Hopefully this will get you started. We wanna see that thing fly!

RE: Transall C-160
I followed Van's example and linked my elevators in the middle and use a single servo. My rudder control comes through the top in a new hole I made about 3.5" to the rear of where the stock opening would be. IMO this is where the stock hole should have been. In my video, I tried using flaperons but the plane dove when I engaged them. This is not the fault of the plane! I copied a program from another airplane's program in my radio memory. In that program, I had down elevator mixed in with the flaperons and that is why my Transall dove strait down when I engageed the flaperons. While it was the perfect mix for the other plane (a Dragon 40) it was way too much down elevaotor mixed in for the Transall. Something I neglected to check before launch. I have since reprogrammed the flaperons for the Transall and intend to try that a couple more times to see if it will slow the landings. I have considered cutting inboard flaps too but that is just more weight. Van, did you ever fly with the flaperons? -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
Thanks Larry, I use four 3S1P 2000mAh packs in paralell. One output assures the same voltage output to each motor. I am using the Eflight 40A ESCs. I printed the Coast Guard insignia, Port of Call numbers, and large Coast guard on the fusealage on to Testors water transfer decal paper from my conputer. I got the image of the insignia from RCGroups scale planes forum. The water transfer decals were kind of an experiment for me because they are much bigger than the tiny ones you get in plastic kits. They worked out great and I will be using them more in the future. OK. Next project!

RE: Transall C-160
I finaly got a chance to maiden my Transall and with great sucsess! I had a very droopy nose just like Van's first bird. It took all of the up trim I had to keep it level. Once in flight, it was as smooth as a baby's butt. Still flew a little fast but very smooth. I used the 11x5.5 two blade props and because I lowered my LG, the props were a little close to the ground and buzzed the matt on take off roll. My first landing was horrible but actually did not damage a thing!! . The video makes the landing sound like a crash but I assure you, the video is worsr than the landing. Anyway, a great day for me. This made up for last Sunday[:D] -Todd [link=http://www.rcpics.net/media/C-160_TRANSALL_MAIDEN_FLIGHT.wmv]Transall Video[/link]

RE: Transall C-160
Well there you have it [:)] So I finally got around to painting the chevron on the side. I used TopFlight Missile Red Luster Cote for the chevron and Monocote trim for the other red parts. The skinny blue chevron will be Pactra pinstripe. Also here is a photo of the gaping cargo ramp opening. This extra hole actually helped during the build as it gave me more access to the 'bay'. -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
Thanks for the report Van. Let's not start counting dollars now.....[;)] I am using the eflight 40s. I know that Al had a problem with one but I had these just laying around. On all bench and taxi testing, the eflight ESCs and AXIs start and spool perfectly in sync. I bolt my center wing section down to a bench and hold WOT for just under a minute and while things warm up a bit, everything seems smooth. A note about my amps: in an earlier post, I stated that I was only getting 25ish amps with a 10x6 four blade prop. I was testing with a low pack. A fully charged flight pack (4 each 3s1p 2000mah in paralell) gives me more realistic amp readings at 38.5 at WOT. I may do an exhibition flght with the four blades but will likely fly mostly with the 9x6s. Van is that what you had on there? -Todd

Hey Al, You will not be able to use a single brushless ESC with two brushless motors. I have been there, tried that on a different project. (See pics) You will see the first time you fire them up. It will appear that the motors are fighting themselves to get spinning. I don't know the technical electronic reason, but it just wont work! -Todd

RE: Transall C-160
Hey Al, T.G.I.F. You absolutely must grind flats on the shafts if you are using set-screw type adapters. Collet adapters are my favorite because they tend to run perfectly true and dont need flats. If you are using the AXI motors, the AXI mounting kit creates a 6mm output shaft and allows you to use standard spinners. I plan on wearing either my Monster Garage ball cap or a large viking helmet during my maiden if anyone cares. I have finished my lowering of the LG and it looks good. I might have some trouble with 'taint-scrape on landings though. Because of my anal retention, I decided to remove the red wingtips and blue leading edge covering. This was probably a bad idea because I have no idea how to cover wing tips. This also set my build schedule back a day. I did some initial taxi testing with just the center wing section and it darn near got airborn even with a small wing! I have weghed individual parts of the plane and it looks like it is going to come in at about 8 lbs even. -Todd
