RE: Ultra-Micro P-51 BNF by ParkZone
ORIGINAL: Wilson4824 The paint looks great!!!!! have you got any flights on it yet?? do you think the paint added a lot of weight?
I don't have a scale for weighing it with. While I am sure it added some weight, I can't feel it. I have only gotten two flights on it since the paint job, and those were with some decent wind. I think it is slightly tail heavy now as it seems to be ballooning more into a nose up attitude, particularly when turned into the wind. Inverted flight is much easier though. I will get it balanced again when the winds calm down. Flight times seem the same and performance has not diminished at all. I do want to ammend my color comment. Once I got it out in non-cloudy sunlight, the O.D. does look much better than I originally thought. So the decals are off slightly, but close enough for this little plane.
ORIGINAL: Wilson4824 Greg.. It looks like it was a great day. New Thought.. As anyone thought about changing the decals?..... I was thinking of using like a 1/48th scale plastic models water slide decals. I would just like to make mine a little differnt?
Here ya go! My repaint to the Passion Wagon scheme: First I pulled off the original stickers. Most took the paint with them, and on the vertical fin it seemed to take a bit of the foam also. What can you do though, onward and upward! Then I removed the exhaust stacks and masked of the canopy area. Next, feeling too lazy to pull out the airbrush and get testors paints, I used Tamiya TS-32 haze grey and TS-5 olive drab straight out of the rattle can, masking off the grey prior to putting on the OD. The tamiya O.D. seems to be more of a medium or dark green rather than a true O.D. but it looks O.K. on the plane. An airbrush and testors paints may be a better choice. Lastly, I contacted Callie Graphics, http://www.callie-graphics.com/ , and asked if she could make a set of decals for the small mustang. She said that some of the decals would have the green around them due to equipment constraints but she would try to get it close to the colors I was using. I asked for a set for Passion Wagon and for Shangri La (I may convert my second one to a C-Model). I think she did a great job for the little mustang, and frankly I think the OD on her decals is probably more accurate than the tamiya paint. (see above for paint comment). However, I sent her some pictures to show her the results, and she said she wanted them to be a closer match and will continue to try and get them closer for others. (I ordered a set of graphics for a large stearman from her at the same time, and they are great!). This was my first dealing with Callie, based on recommendations here and on RCU, and I have to say I have been very pleased with her work...I am sure you will be too. I haven't decided if I am going to bother with the spinner color or not yet. O.K., that is my first re-paint of the Micro Mustang, lets see YOURS!!!
ORIGINAL: littlecrankshaf Ok, just wondering about something. It is often said that AMA is a benefit to the modeling community beyond just the members of AMA. Since the members and clubs are our greatest visible assets to engage the community at large…what have you or your club done to benefit the rest of the modeling community…you know, other than the club or AMA members? Example; I helped a fellow to learn to fly at his house in his pasture or helped a guy trim out his model at the school yard or chipped in to buy an interested fellow a parkflyer… or our club worked with the city to allow model aviation in a park without the need of AMA memberships to fly there. You guys seem to be a fairly active bunch…Let’s here some your accounts.
Perhaps as the thread-starter, you could lead by example and list some of what you have done to get things rolling.

Who's to say that that fish is ok and survives after it's been dragged along like that for up to half an hour frantically trying to go the opposite way? Who decided that fish don't feel pain and stress when something it thinks is food all of a sudden starts pulling it by its jaw? Not to mention the commercial fishing boats. They look like packing equipment. Specifically they appear to be bins for holding those little foam packing peanuts that are then fed out the tubes at the bottom into whatever container they are going in. If you look carefully, you can see the shadow/level of the peanuts inside...I think.

RE: AMA and what does it do for you??
kf8kt (Mr. Wright), I don't think you will have stepped on any toes, and you also make a very good point. The members make the clubs, or at least some of the members that step up like you make the clubs. As a partially squeaky wheel (AMA member that doesn't agree with everything the organization does, but agrees with alot) I try to work at the club level in the same way you do. I served as Vice President and then President of one of my clubs, and am currently safety officer for another one my clubs. I volunteer as an instructor and am also a contest director and leader member. With that said, one of the constant issues at the local level is getting people to step and be active rather than being one of the "I just want to fly, is the field mowed yet" crowd. To bad your not in my area, I could teach you to fly and you could teach me to understand those dots and dashes...well I could teach you to fly anyway![:D] I hope your interest grows and that you continue to add your valuable insight here. Cheers
ORIGINAL: makmov It is actually within a State Park. So it's 58+60+60 = 178 a year.
Given the state listed under your "handle", would this happen to be the park on the other side of the river from Little Rock? If you really don't want to join the club associated with it, for whatever reason, I would definately check with the park officials about the requirements. If it is the same park, as I recall there are many athletic fields that folks use...and I doubt that membership to a private organization is required for their use.

RE: AMA and what does it do for you??
ORIGINAL: makmov
ORIGINAL: Woody218-RCU
ORIGINAL: mkranitz
ORIGINAL: combatpigg The simple truth [with no spin or word wars] is that if you want to join an AMA flying club, you are forced to join the AMA. To argue that point is being sophomoric.
Not true. If you want to compete in an AMA sanctioned contest you have to belong. Otherwise, if the club is a public club on public property you DO NOT have to be a member of the AMA to fly.
Our club is on public land, owned by the municipal Parks & Rec Dept. We are REQUIRED to have AMA membership in order to fly!
Same here, so that's not true.
Does the municipality rent the land to the club, or just allow them to fly there? If it is the latter, I would think that you could ask them why membership in AMA is required. If they cite insurance, politely ask if they will accept your HO primary insurance coverage instead of the AMA secondary coverage. If the insurance coverage cited is for the landowner, inquire about what insurance the baseball teams are required to present, etc. Be nice, and proffesional at all stages, and you may find that you don't have to be a member of AMA in order to fly on the publicly owned land you already pay taxes to support and that sports, which are more dangerous, use without membership in private organizations. Just a thought.

RE: Mini P-51D from Horizon/Parkzone
O.K. the problem with mine was solved! I returned the one with "stuck" controls last night and got a replacement (last one in the shop, it was their display). After they exchanged it for me, my pals at the LHS cut the stuck one open to investigate. Turns out that the sticky stuff holding the rx/servo board isn't quite sticky enough apparently. Instead of the elevator moving per control, the board had broken free and slid forward and starboard. This, in-turn, caused the rudder servo gearing to dig into the foam and jam the whole thing in that position...thus locking the control surfaces in position.

RE: Mini P-51D from Horizon/Parkzone
Well, I picked up a ready to fly version and a bind and fly version on Friday. I took the RTF out with me to the field Saturday and it flew great, for about 2 minutes. Then the rudder locked hard over to the right and the elevator full down. It went in straight down, hard. But, it bounced nicely and looks undamaged. The control surfaces won't budge from the locked positions. I even tried to rebind it, and no go, its control surfaces are still locked hard-over. I did bind the BNF version to the transmitter and flew one battery through it yesterday, and that one did just fine. I had the landing gear off for the flight in the backyard. It does multiple sustained loops with ease and rolls are nice. I didn't try any inverted flight yet (probably after work today though!). The only tendancy I noticed so far is the undercambered wing really makes it balloon through most of the speed range. They should have done the wing like the sukhois. But, I think a few clicks of trim will get to settle a bit. All in all, it is fun for the backyard so far, and much better than the cessna in both flight characteristics, and of course looks.
