It's looking good. Can you fit most of that exhaust stack under the cowl or will it require some major surgery?

Oh, the poor old 421 that is hanging in my garage? *sigh* I really need to get that bad boy down and get the bugs ironed out. THEN I will get some video of it. It needs some work before it will fly again, but as long as this thread stays alive I'll stay inspired. When it's up and running, I'll make sure and get some HD video of it and post to YouTube or RCU. I've been distracted by my big Giles 202: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8OBwumkrBE I will get some video of the 421 as soon as I get it going again. -Pat

It's looking good Leo. Any chance you'll be shooting video for the maiden flight? I'm unpleasantly surprised to hear about your experience with Easy Tiger Models. I had heard that they took quality control and customer satisfaction seriously. Sounds like they may be slipping... I haven't flown my 421 in awhile, so I really need to get a receiver plugged into it, iron out the bugs with the retracts, and go for it. When I do, I'll have someone shoot some high def video. Maybe I'll sneak in some low inverted passes over the runway for the camera... -Pat

My canopy was broken when it arrived as well, but they sent me a new one within a week. I know that Nitroplanes used to have a LOT of customer service issues, but my most recent experiences have been really positive. I also know that the guy that does their support here on RCU tries really hard to keep people happy. That being said, I'm sorry your experience has not been positive so far. I think the manufacturer needs to work a little harder on making the canopies for this plane a little more robust and then at least packaging them a little more carefully. -Pat

RE: Which Plane?
I have two Giles 202's, and both of them harrier very, very well. I have flown all of the airplanes you mentioned. In fact, several versions of each. It depends more on the specific model and manufacturer. I have had people tell me that a Giles is a snappy, poorly designed plane. I have video proof that is not always the case...

The hardware mine came with was pretty good, so we must have had different versions. One thing about SD is that they were always making little improvements. I don't know if that tradition will continue with the new name, but we'll see.

RE: TT TOC 33% Yak or Extra 260
I used to have the SD 33% Yak 54 and I flew the heck out of that plane. Hanging from the rafters in my garage is a nearly new 33% Extra 260. I've flown both, and here are my thoughts: For 3D, flips, and wild flight with decent stability and absolutely no roll-out in tight elevator maneuvers, the Yak excels over the 260. For precision flight, the Extra takes the cake. I found the Extra easier to hover and torque roll, but all other 3D maneuvers were more difficult. The Yak also knife-edges much better and has a lot more rudder authority. The Extra can and will roll out of tight loops and tight elevator maneuvers. So, since you are looking at IMAC type flying, I think the Extra is your best bet. If you were wanting to do 3D flying, well, the Yak could do rolling harrier circles around the Extra. Since I like a mix of both, the Extra just did not cut it. Especially with that snap/roll-out tendency. I am now flying a Wildhare Giles 202 that has absolutely no roll-out in tight maneuvers AND it presents exceptionally well during precision flight. If only I could find a home for the Extra... -Pat

If you ever have anyone tell you that the Giles is a snappy plane with that swept back wing, they are so, so wrong. This plane won't roll out of the tightest loops, and the profile looks sleek and presents well in IMAC flying. 3D flying is awesome. I think it was Tired Old Man that recommended this plane, and he was spot on. -Pat

Dave, you must have gotten a slightly different version that some of the rest of us. Mine came with heavy duty ball link hardware that really held up well. If you did not get that same stuff, I recommend you replace it with some good quality gear. With the way you fly, there is no room for second-rate hardware! No more hesitating, just get the good stuff!! -Pat

Hey, you can use two slightly different engines if you want, but about the same power is probably best. You can use .40-.55 2-strokes or .56-.70 4-strokes. It's a neat plane, you'll like it. -Pat
ORIGINAL: MIXMASTER I got my only 3W used and I only have about 30 flights on it, I've tuned the low end in a bit(started over at factory settings)and got it running pretty good with 24X12 Xoar, still it doesnt rev up quite as fast as my DA50's. The DA's(3) are running perfect for me. I still havent taken the high end needle in all the way, that could make some difference. I will keep trying to get it at best setting, its still good enough right now, just a little different timing is all.
I still say send it in to Aircraft International and see if they can get it running better. Have you taken apart the carb to check the diaphragm? I wonder if it is brittle and/or cracked. That can make your mid-range very difficult to tune, although I would expect it to run lean and not burbling rich. -Pat

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
ORIGINAL: MIXMASTER Its strange to me, after reading up on the tilotson carb, I thought maybe 3W engines would be better than DA w/ Walbro as far as transition anyway, but I like my DA's super clean and immediate response over the 3W, no problems with gurgling, running rich here. You do have to tune after break in and change from breakin prop to the best one for transition. I found out you do have to try several props before you get throttle response and high end peak. The Vess props are so different than most, you cant go by the standard pitch numbers and 8=A, B=10, C=12 doesnt really work either. Props can vary a lot in airfoil thickness, cord, and taper at the tips, huge differences.
On the contrary, the 3W's are known for a slightly better transition than the DA's, possibly because of the Tillotson carb; whereas the DA's usually have a slightly better top-end. If your 3W is not transitioning correctly, and no amount of tuning is fixing the problem, you need to send it in to Aircraft International, (I never recommend Cactus Aviation, as a general rule). Chances are you have a cracked diaphragm, warped reed, carbon build-up, or one of a few other issues that are beyond simple tuning. 3W's are well-known as having excellent low-end torque compared to the DA's. DA's are known for being substantially lighter and developing more RPM's at the top-end. Like I said before, they are both great, and I would not hesitate to buy either, it just depends on what you are looking for. Then we can throw the ZDZ's into the mix, with the great consistency of the rotary valve, etc. Regardless, your 3W has an issue and needs to be serviced.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
I've found that to be really common with the DA's. My 3W85xi weighs considerably more than the DA85, but it does not have that mid-range gurgle and the low-end torque is a lot better. It's all a trade off, and there are strengths and weaknesses in both designs. I would not hesitate to buy a DA if I had the money, but for now I'm all about the 3W's. ZDZ's are nice too, but I'm not a fan of their rotary valve design. Again, it's all about personal preference.

RE: Lanier Yak
ORIGINAL: maxun do not gamble, this airplanes need a 100cc no less do not use a DA85 the vibration is big, lots of power with big price tag but lots of vibrations. The ticket with this lanier 33% is a 100CC ZDZ, DA or DL you can go wrong. You will be the king of the field.
This is an old quote, but no one responded. There were two similar series of airplanes from Lanier, one was a 50-80cc and the other was a 100cc, which was the 33% version. The one this thread deals with is the 87" version, (about 30% scale). For the 30% version, an 85cc engine would be a very powerful combination and I would probably recommend it. A 50cc can do great things here as well. It was a versatile airframe in that respect. The DA 85 and 3W 85 are not really that big on vibration. Some of it depends on the condition of the engine, the prop and spinner, etc. My 3W85 started to shake quite a bit and I sent it in for service. It turns out there was a lot of carbon build-up inside the cylinder which made it a lot less smooth than it used to be. -Pat

RE: Gyro Placement in Plane & Gyro for Tail Wheel, Rudder or both?
Thanks for posting your findings! I have a 33% Extra 260 that I'm pondering putting a gyro into, just to assist during some 3D maneuvers. I don't think I could, or would ever want to, get into the habit of not using the rudder at all during these maneuvers, so I was thinking that a moderate to high gain in rate mode would be the way to go. I wonder if any of the big names are secretly using gyros. Are there rules against using gyros in competitions?

I wonder if it would help for hovering and torque-rolling in rate mode... I may have to give it a try and find out. I have a GY401 wanna-be that does only okay in helicopters, but you don't need that kind of precision in an airplane, so what the heck? I should try it out and see...

RE: Gyro Placement in Plane & Gyro for Tail Wheel, Rudder or both?
ORIGINAL: fadi81 I don't think you will get your hands full, we helicopter pilots do use rudder and aileron and elevator, we do use throttle control and we do much more aerobatic moves than any airplane can. All this is done in both gyro's modes. Maybe on airplanes it is different, but I am not that convinced. In the end, it is just a matter of getting used to this setting, it is obvious that your reflexes are currently built in a certain way (for classical airplane flying)... You will quickly change that :)
Okay, don't use HH/AVCS/etc. mode in airplanes, and I'll tell you why: that mode is designed for use in a helicopter. Notice that in HH mode when you input and hold a small amount of rudder, the control surface will keep on going until it gets to the limit. That is bad news in an airplane, which does not normally pirouhette from a small amount of rudder input. However, a helicopter in that mode will just slowly piro. From what I can tell, it's designed to help keep your helicopter spinning evenly no matter what the conditions. Airplanes just don't use rudder in quite the same manner. If you're an airplane pilot who normally coordinates your turns, you could inadvertently end up in a nasty spin. In rate mode, you input a small amount of rudder, and that is what you get. -Pat

It's a work in progress, but overall it flies pretty nice. It has a much faster roll rate than my Yak and carries speed better. It also seems easier to hover and torque roll

That is true, they don't come with the tail wheel or tail gear assembly. I'm not sure why they don't, but I would recommend the Haigh tail gear assembly. I have one on my 33% TOC Yak, and it has held up to numerous harrier landings. The Sullivan tail gear assembly did not fare as well. -Pat

TT TOC 33% Extra 260
I just purchased this plane from Chief Aircrat yesterday, and UPS delivered it today. Right now they have it on sale for $595.00 with free shipping on certain color schemes, (guess which I chose, just guess!). The airplane was well-packaged and had very few wrinkles in the covering when I opened it today. I've cleared off one of my two work benches, and I'm ready to start taking components off my trusty old SD 33% Yak 54 to put on this plane. I've run into a problem in that there does not appear to be a manual dedicated to this plane. The manuals for the 30% and 35% are available on the web, and that will help me get through the build. However, I can only guess about the appropriate CG. Anyone out there with this plane have a recommendation for the CG or anything else I should do during the build? -Pat
