RE: Need some carb help
Earl, Typically if the low end was too lean, the engine would die during transition from idle to high end. If it was rich, the engine would cough and hestitate till it catches up and burns off the residual fuel. Is it possible that you are going the wrong direction and the problem is that the engine is too rich on the low needle? I like to set my low end rich..get the high end needle set, then keep leaning on the low end needle till it has a snappy responce from idle to high speed (WOT). Remember that these are very basic carburetors with simple ways of controlling fuel on the low and high end..the midrange is going to be sloppy. Peter

rule proposals
Its that time again and there has been alot of conversation on questions surrounding the future of Event 424 I know that some of us don't check the AMA sight regularly so I figured I would post a couple of the ideas here. These are just ideas and input is appreciated. - Rule proposal RCR 11-_______ Event No. 424, Sport Quickie 1. Amend paragraph 16.3.2. a. 2) as follows: 16.3.2. Powerplant a. Engine 2) Configuration: Stock, commercially available, front-intake, sideexhaust. There shall be no substitution of any part of the engine, other than those parts specifically listed as allowable substitute parts under the definition of "engine" in section 2 of these rules ("Defined Terms"), regardless of whether the substitute parts are commercially available. Rule proposal RCR 11-_______ Event No. 424, Sport Quickie 1. Amend paragraph 16.3.3.b. and add a new 16.3.3.c. as follows: 16.3.3. Special Provisions: b. Rule variations permitted: The engine rules specified below CDs are encouraged to apply any additional engine restrictions that have been used successfully on a local basis to limit the cost or power output of engines used in this event. These and any other variations from the rules specified above should be noted in all pre-contest publicity. Note: any variation that results in the use of engines larger than 0.403 cu. in. displacement, tuned mufflers, or tuned pipes will result in the event being sanctioned as Quickie 500 (Event No. 428) rather than Sport Quickie. c. Claiming rule: In addition to either or both of the above approaches, a claiming rule allows any contestant to purchase any other contestants engine after the contest for a specified price. $100 is suggested. Any registered pilot may claim an engine used by another registered pilot who is flying in the event, using the following procedure: 1) The claiming pilot must make a claim directly to the CD accompanied by $100.00 cash. The claim must be made before the completion of the last heat of the contest for the engine being claimed. 2) The CD will not notify the pilot using the claimed engine until the completion of that pilot's last heat. At that time, the CD will notify the pilot of the claim, and the pilot must immediately remove the engine from the aircraft and hand it to the CD in exchange for the $100.00 cash. 3) If the pilot using the engine being claimed refuses to surrender the engine, he or she will be immediately disqualified from the contest and forfeit all awards, prizes, and applicable season points accrued at that contest. 4) This claiming rule is in addition to, and not a substitute for, other rule compliance methods specified under section 5 ("Challenges to Legality"). Entry at an AMA 424 Sport Quickie race implies automatic consent to this claiming rule.

RE: My F5D sized for Q40 project
Lee, you are correct on the rules as they stands for 422. In the AMA rules proposals, Q40 SPORT , (event425) ,doesnt require the aircraft to resemble any other racers or “prior approval of designs, as long as the overall dimensions of the airframe fit the square inch requirements. This opens the door to alot of airplanes designs that have never been built and allows people to be creative and even make bi-planes.

RE: My F5D sized for Q40 project
Hey Victor, that looks real neat. If the fuse is 3" wide, 5 " tall with the canopy and gives you a cross-sectional area of 12.5 square inches, that would be legal in Q40 sport. This is exactly the kind of "thinking outside the box" that we are looking for. Good luck and I hope it flies well.

RE: Prop for TT 45 on a Q40
Concider several factors in this equation, The airframe is very slick on a Q40 , completely different than a quickie. the wing is only 400" of area so less lift created in the turns you want a prop that gives good air speed but will continue to pull strong in a hard turn. The performance of a TT can NOT be compared to a Jett or Nelson, so trial and error will lead you to your results.

RE: Merlin 2016 GloBee Style Plugs
I have a relative question and Gosh I hope this doesn't sound too negative or be taken wrong. BUT.. I keep reading how a plug will give 300 more rpm, or changing a head shim will help out in another area. If the whole idea of Q25 or 424 racing is to bring new blood into the sport (hobby) , why are you messing with getting that extra little bit out of the engine? If a new racer comes out and looses ( and he will because of lack of experience ), and then over hears the more experienced pilot talking about head shimming and special plugs, isn't he going to feel like he is already loosing in an event that is supposed to be STOCK! Sorry if I have offended anyone , but if 300rpm is going to make or break your day,,maybe spending a few more dollars on another gallon of fuel and practicing would be better spent. I run my engines just as they came out of the box , STOCK. I don't remove or add head shims and use a KB1L. I don't use a tach ! I have NO idea of what kind of RPM my TT40 will turn, and it doesnt matter. It is STOCK ! If I loose a heat, I want to know it was because I was outflown or I had stupid thumbs, Not because my plug wasn't as good or my head shimming was off. C'mon guys..keep it simple . .

RE: Stinger Build Thread
Scott, you know where i stand on the subject. This is a sister event to 422 as 424 compares to 428. I have flown several of these with TT40's. I had a Proud Bird, and AJ and a stinger. All of them fly great with the TT40 and are cheaper to run than the faster versions. I would like to hear from some of the others out there, especially 424 pilots that might want to give it a try.

RE: Setup PROFI 40
Here is the link to the profi web site..there is "quick start" and "Q500 instructions" on these pages. http://www.flycontrolline.com/Profi%20Q500%206.5cc.htm <link Also from Jim Booker "The correct propeller for the Profi is the old 8.75x8.5 or 8.75x9W. The ground rpm will only be 16000 and it will not run at full throttle for more than 5 seconds so you have to hold the throttle at ½ until just before the launch. It stages on the pipe and goes very fast. Figure out the needle which you have to get close by flying the model and leaning until it hits properly on the launch. Too lean and it runs fine but not fast, too rich and it runs fine but not peaking on the pipe. "

I have 80+ flights on my Stinger and have been primarily using a APC 9X6 sport prop to keeping it in-line with the 424 rules. It accelerates well, has more speed than a Q500, Looks cool [sm=shades_smile.gif] and allows for easy take off from grass [sm=wink_smile.gif].

RE: AMA 424 Race Bloomington, IL June 20 & 21
All I can say is WOW, what a great race venue !!! The Bloomington guys did a wonderful job in preperation of the field. This was a grass field that was mowed down and rolled like a golf course! AMAZING Day 1 was HOT HOT HOT HOT and HUMID. Racing was fantastic with several lead changes in every heat all day long. I had my share of "bad engine blues" do to losing half of a piston on and OLD TT40. I got some parts from a friend and installed a new Piston and liner for day 2. Day 2 greeted us with rain in the morning that let up around 9:30 and we started racing at 10:00 am sharp. We flew 6 rounds before the rain came back with EVERY heat being so close that you could have thrown a blanket over all 3 planes at any point. BIG FUN. Thanks to all the course workers for sitting out in miserable heat on both days. Great racing and great fun on both days. I look forward to the second race in Bloomington later this year and hope more of you can show up. This was the first race ever for the SIRS club..I would have to say..second to none, great job! BIG thanks to Jett Engineering - Sport. 3D and Performance Engines Jett Engineering ( Dub Jett ) ,,, Darrol Cady ,.. Hobbyland in Bloomington ,,, Bob Smith Adhesives and Click here to visit the Hobbico.com website Hobbico for the awesome support and promotion of PYLON RACING and donation of some very cool prizes.

RE: AMA 424 Race Bloomington, IL June 20 & 21
The First Annual Bloomington 424 race is just over 1 week away. I talked to Mike Wilson who has told me that he has over 15 pre-registered for June 20th and 21st. They will be awarding Trophies for 1st thru 3rd place and fast times. Along with Trophies, he has received some generous gifts from some of our great race retailers, promoters and supporters that he will give out in a drawing at the end of the race. I was told that if you show up and race, your name will be put in the box for the drawings. This is the FIRST race that has taken place in Central Illinois for several years and we would like to see this become one of the Premier race events in the country.

To all of you that may not know it. The Bloomington area clubs have been doing alot of the club racing and are taking the big plunge into 3 pole AMA sanctioned racing. A few of the guys went to Muncie and now are hooked. We all have the question of "how do we promote racing?" Here it is !! This will be the first of two official AMA 424 sanctioned races this year in Central Illinois. It would be great to see the support and encouragement that we have all been talking about. This is a great club and are very enthusiastic about racing. Lets all show up and help put Bloomington on the map for annual races that we can talk about for years to come. Racing in Illinois is back!
