IMAC RC Simulators
Does anyone know of a good RC simulator with which to practice IMAC? For me, this would be quite useful since bad weather is not uncommon in my neck of the woods. Moreover, a good simulator would be invaluable in practicing new IMAC sequences during winter (which tends to be quite long here up in the high north). The problem with the RC simulator I now use (Great Planes) is that it does not handle angles very well when flying maneouvres high up. So if anyone knows a about a useful and good IMAC/pattern-practice simulator, I would be very greatful to hear about it.
ORIGINAL: Ramstein44 Not really. Some material was removed from the wing skins to accommodate for the size in order to properly retract without binding, but nothing major had to be done. I don't remember exactly, but I think I removed 1/4 inch around the sheeting.
Thanks, Ram. I seem to be getting into trouble with the wheels hitting the inside of the leading edge beam. You probably have a slightly different angle on the mounting of the retracts. I centered the wheel axle in the center of the original wheel well opening. Alternatively, I could go with wheels slightly smaller than 5 1/4". Cheers

I like this better for all the reason I mentioned prior, I can place a larger wheel and I can get another retract unit for $109. I'll keep the other ESM gear, repair it and use it as a fixed gear for the second D9 if that time ever comes.
Ram I am working on installing the Sierra tail retracts now. RE: DLE55 & 3-Blade Prop
I have run several DLE55's with a 3-blade Mejzlik 21X12 and that works great provided you are using a canister for exhaust. This is what I use on my Composite ARF Yak55SP 2.1m with a DLE55. However, with an inverted wraparound muffler the engine is markedly less efficient, and you would be much better off for instance with a Mejzlik 2-blade 22X10. This is what I use on my TF GS P-47 with a DLE55. If you really want to go with a 3-blade, I would recommend a 21X12 or a 21X11.5N Mejzlik to a Biela. Bielas are quite heavy propellers.

RE: ESM FW D-9
In the end I went for a simple solution and modified the firewall to accomodate the JTEC inverted wraparound muffler. The piece that I cut out will be moved back 3cm and used as a rear wall in a box that will close the opening that resulted. I will also reinforce the rear of the firewall with alutech plates. In the end, it looked OK. Only very small modifications to the cowling are needed. I have decided to try 1.5 degrees of right thrust, and will see how that works.

RE: ESM FW D-9
ORIGINAL: n8622t Not a thing wrong with that P47[:)] I am going with a similar set up since yours looks so good. DA50 and a slimline. How is the firewall since you cut out the bottom section? You gonna need to reinforce in any way? What about the open fuse section...idea...take some thin balsa and wet one side so it will curve along the grain for you, then lay it in the opening from the firewall to the front of the fuse. Work it in and glue it. Piece the ends in then come back and trim it off...thin epoxy and paint it. It will help channel the heat away from the muffler and engine and keep hot air out of the fuse. Hope this helps since you already worked out how my engine is going on[:D]
The firewall is very sturdy and I do not think it actually needs reinforcement. I will, however, reinforce the rear of it with alutech plates. I have also coated the front of the firewall with epoxy to strengthen it, and coated the inside of the fuselage in front of the firewall, as well as about an inch of the front of the firewall along its periphery, with epoxy and fiberglass for extra strength. Thanks for the suggestion for closing the gap. I am still thinking about various alternatives for how to do it.
ORIGINAL: n8622t It looks to me like a Slimline muffler which I think has the best sound for the 50cc range...I have the Jtec equivalent and they dont have the deep sound of the Slimline.
You are right, it is a Slimline muffler, not a JTEC. I use a JTEC (larger) on my TF GS P-47. In that case, I need to trim a little bit off the engine box. As for the Dora, I will shorten the exhaust pipes a little. Will post a few pictures with the fuselage upright and cowling in place in a couple of days. It looks as though the appearance will be quite OK. I have not tried the Slimline muffler ona 50cc before, so I am currious about the sound.

RE: ESM FW D-9
A few pictures of the engine installation. I looks like it will a challenge to fit a muffler in here. I don't really want to use the original DLE, since the muffling is practically zero. I do have a JTEC compact inverted wraparound muffler, but this will require cutting away a sizeable portion of the firewall. Too bad they didn't pull the firewall a further 2" back and build en engine box onto it, that would have solved all problems. I may order a custom muffler from JTEC with the dimensions of the original DLE muffler.

I have finished installing the Sierra retracts that I received from VQ Warbirds now. A little bit of adjustment on the mountings in the wing (following Rams instructions), and they went in OK. Still waiting for the wheels. Ticketec, Ram, or someone else who has installed an IC engine driving a 2-blade 22X10 or so on this one: How much right thrust did you apply? I am trying to line everything up for the engine installation now (DLE55). I am thinking something like 1.5 degrees.

RE: Opinions on ESM P-47 or any ESM Warbird
jjkirby I have flown extensively (since 2009, still going strong) the ESM P-47 with Sierra Retracts and Evo 26 cc gas engine. A great flying airplane with extremely low stall speed, and no tendency to flicking on landing. And great value for the money. One suggestion: Make sure you strengthen the inside of the firewall with e.g. fiberglass cloth and epoxy, this will make it a lot more durable than if you don't. Good choice.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
DHC6, you mentioned earlier that you would go for a dle55 in this case. That would be a good choice. If you are looking for reliability, ease of maintenance and minimization of hassle, I would strongly recommend a gas engine compared to a glow engine for a plane of this size, for the reasons that JohnVH and other have given above. I completely agree with them.
ORIGINAL: ticketec I used 0.005" everygreen plastic, becuase my machine handles it fine, I have cut 0.010" with it but it was a little more work for it, and i've run out! It would be pretty hard to make good instrument bezels because they would need to be pretty thick to look convincing. and I don't know that most vinyl cutters would be able to handle the thickness required. Not saying it's not possible, but in my experiments it's easier to buy them and use the vinyl cutter to add details. As you can see in the pic's, I have added the luggauge compartment to the back of the cockpit and have painted it all up in the RLM66 and a lighten version to add some depth. Building the cockpit into a model that's already finished add an element of difficulty as well. all the bits need to go in and out from the top, and there is a fiar bit less room to work with.... Thanks dave
Nice! I am afraid you are bit more ambitious than I am with mine, but I will see what I can pull off..... Meanwhile, Hauptmann Wuebke has been reunited with his ship!
ORIGINAL: ticketec Here is another update on the cockpit painting. The white bits you see cut out are for the added details I'm putting on. The round item with the serations around the outside is for the artifical horizon. The Fw-190 had that very distictive look about them. What I did was to draw them up and them up on th computer and them sending them to my vinyl cutter. Seeing as my vinyl cutter handles the 0.005" plastic well, I just cut three of them, laminated them together and then attached them to the instrument. the other two items are for the cutout on the hood. The full size has two stiffening plates riveted to the cutouts. As for the painting. I have done the base RLM66 paintwork, and Have done the first past at highlights. I'll paint the various details next, and then gloss clear coat them so I can do a bit more weathering on them, before finally clearing them with a flat. Thanks dave
Nice! RE: ESM FW D-9
I got a little work done on the Dora over the weekend. I mounted the flaps and installed the links to the flying surfaces. Need to fine tune the flaps a bit, but that is a detail. I have (I guess needless to say) decided to drop the red plastic wheel wells. I have glassed the wheel wells and will paint them next. Does anyone know what colour the wells are supposed to be? I did a little bit of painting on the cockpit, too. Still a lot of details to be worked out, but one gets the idea. I probably have not been very accurate with the colours, but the walkaround literature I have a my disposal shows all sorts of colour schemes in the cockpit. As far as wheels are concerned, I think I will go with the Williams brothers 4 1/2". I did get a quote from Glennis. While their products are superb, the price made my stomach turn. Next up is installing the engine (DLE55) and the retracts.
