RE: Radios
Just recently switched to Spektrum DX-8.Bought it when it had the 3 receivers and telemetry with it.I still needed a few more receivers to swap all my planes over,so I bought the same DX8 deal and kept receivers and telemetry and sold the new DX8. I still have a Futaba 9CAP with a 72 mhz synthesized and Frsky 2.4 as my backup radio.

RE: Help!!!!! I have a DX6i problem that we cant figure out.
I use an arming switch instead of a regular slide switch. With my DX8 telemtry I can see the receiver voltage on the radio.if you have a voltmeter you need to see what the voltage is at the receiver without a load and with a load.If you have an old battery pack or bad servo, cut the plug off and plug that into the receiver and connect it to your voltmeter to read the voltage. With a JR HD switch and a Hobbico Life pack,I had almost a 1 volt drop. 6.6v to 5.6v by just operating the rudder and elevator on the bench.I installed an arming switch and could only induce a 0.2v drop while operating the elevator and rudder servos.I also pushed againt the control surface and loaded the servos without any further voltage drop.here is the arming switch I use. Also with this arming switch, the only way it can fail is for the arming plug to come out or a broken wire. Slide switches can wear and get to much resistance in them and cause a failure. Also the less connectors between the battery and receiver the better.I try to use deans connectors for any connections between battery and receiver or I will extend the wire by soldering in what i need to extend it. http://www.rcaccessory.com/AS1-K12.aspx

RE: Dx8 still has problems
I have found from doing some voltage testing from the battery pack to any receiver, you will have a certain amount of voltage drop due to connections and switches.I just setup a Wild hare Edge 540 50cc using Power HD 1501mg servos,DX8 and an AR8000 receiver with telemetry. Battery is a Hobbico Life 6.6v 2100 with 2 switches. One switch is a JR chargeswitch(JRPA004),the other is a switch I bought from the Perry r/c swapmeet for $10.00 that looks like a JR chargeswitch but is not.with the telemetry I can see what voltage is at the receiver from the DX8.It records min and max voltage automatically on screen. With just the $10.00 switch on my voltage was dropping to 3.9v from 6.6 while operating all servos. With just the JR switch on the voltage would drop to 5.6v from 6.6 while operating servos.with both switches on it would drop to 5.9v from 6.6 while operating servos. voltage drop is servo load and from resistance in cheap switch, you also have some resistance in all the connections between receiver and battery.keep connections to a minimum. Also use HD servo extensions with gold plated terminals for a very good connection. And try not to plug/unplug connections often.each time you plug/unplug,it expands the female side and eventually it will loose its tension. With a 4.8v pack with a bad connection or cheap switch it will be enough to make the receiver reboot/brownout whatever you want to call it. With a 6.0v pack with loose/dirty/ connections or a cheap switch it still can drop enough voltage also. I have setup all my planes that are on Spektrum using this way and never seen a problem, by checking to see what voltage is at the receiver,I know what is there. You can not put a 6.0v pack on a system and hope you get 6.0v there.you make sure you get the voltage there by testing it with a voltmeter at the receiver. People just hook everything up and say its got a 6.0v battery, should be good. May have 6.0v at battery, but by the time it gets to the receiver,it will be less. You just need to take the time and make sure you are getting as much as that 6.0v from the battery to the receiver while under load(moving servos) as possible through by CHECKING VOLTAGE AT THE RECEIVER NOT THE CHARGE JACK OR BATTERY. As far as my credentials on this, no I am not an electrical engineer but I am a GM Mastertech ASE Mastertech specialize in Electrical repairs I am constantly looking at problems on GM products pertaining to voltages/voltage drop within the GM high speed and low speed communications between computer modules.

Why is my plane whistling??
Couple years ago I was flying my Ultra Stick 60 and a piece of covering came loose and started making a whistling noise. Fellow flyer came over while I was still flying it and asked why it was whistling.well at this time while still flying it I had no idea what was causing it until I landed and looked it over,so I just said I guess because it does not know the words.[8|][:D] Got some laughs over that one at that time. Still flying the Ultra Stick 60 but had to replace engine.Had a Thunder Tiger 91 4 stroke on it.Flew it so much I wore the engine out.[:D] I now have a Saito 91 Gold Knight on it.picked it up in Perry from the same guy that asked me why my plane was whistling.[:D]

DX8 with 2 free receivers
If anyone is interested,Hobbytown in Augusta,GA still have the DX8 with 2 free receivers in stock.7-8 in stock I think. I bought one when they came out with it,then last week I needed at least 2 more receivers. So I bought another DX8 with 2 free receivers.I kept all three receivers, the telemetry module and hookups. Sold the DX8 NIB for $300.So I got 3 receivers and telemetry module with hookups for $129.99 plus tax. saved about $200.00 if I had bought everthing seperate and he saved $50 off of a new radio. I actually sold the radio just after I bought it to a fellow flyer that was at the store the same time I was there.

[quote]ORIGINAL: goirish I have a 52 gas engine from HK (1st mistake) that the shaft that holds the prop on was drilled off-centered. I cannot get any place with HK. What would that part be called. On the prop end it has a 10mm x 1.5 socket head bolt holding the prop on. The other end is bolted to the crankcase by 3 bolts. The unit itself is about 2 inches long. I don't know what it is called and don't know where I might buy one. Like I said, after many emails to HK it looks like I am going to end up with a paper weight that looks like a gas engine. You would have to use a reversing Y with the elevators.with a regular Y they would be like ailerons. Hitec digital servos can be reversed with a programmer and used with a regular Y. But if the radio supports split elevators I would use it providing you are not using all the channels already.

RE: plane dont respond to radio
If the servos have been sitting for 4-5 years in one position, you may have bad/dirty pots in the servos. unhook the linkages from the servo arm and see if the servos still are jittery or not smooth.if so,I would not trust them. After 4-5 years of sitting I would not trust the batteries either. I would replace batteries and servos if you are planning to keep flying. will cost less in the long run.

RE: Biggest Flop ARF?
For me it was the first design Seagull Edge 540 60-90 size. put it together and balanced it by the instructions.on maiden flight as soon as it took off, tail dropped and nose went straight up.VERY tail heavy, gave full power to the super tigre 90,gained altitude and finally got it to level out. took about 10 tries to land that thing.had to land it like a harrier but with some speed or it would snap out of it.Seagull was no help on balancing it,so I added around 6-8 ounces of weight to the nose.flew better but had to land hot. got rid of that thing.

RE: Range Check
From Futaba's website this is for Futaba radios on 72mhz check other manufactors if need be. Please note that different systems demonstrate different range checks, and the same system will range check differently in different conditions. Also, the receiver antenna's installation effects the range test—exiting the top of the model is ideal. Before you range test: equipment preparation and mounting 1. Pre-installation inspection: a. Be sure the receiver antenna is intact, with no scratches, tears, hard creases or other damage, and that it is securely attached to the receiver. b. Be sure the receiver crystal is fully seated in the receiver. c. Always pad the receiver, and cover the crystal location to ensure the crystal does not fall out should it become loose. d. Never install an aftermarket "whip" or shortened transmitter or antenna. These are not recommended by Futaba and may affect your overall range. 2. Receiver antenna routing recommendations: a. Keep the antenna as far as possible from servo wires, metal pushrods, ignitor wires, anything carbon fiber, or anything else that may conduct electricity. Be aware that truly metallic (metal-colored MonoKote is not) and carbon-fiber finishes can affect radio range as well. b. Exit the antenna above the aircraft, not close to the ground, if possible. This dramatically increases the accuracy of a ground range test. c. Remember: if this is a gasoline-powered model, EVERYTHING radio system related must be isolated by at least 12 inches. This includes the antenna. Don't be tempted to run the antenna forward up the fuse if your receiver is rear-mounted, or that isolation protection is lost. d. Ideally, have the antenna exit the fuse within inches of the receiver, and mount to the top of the vertical fin (run the antenna through 2 holes of a cutoff servo arm, then rubber band that servo arm to a t-pin out the top of the fin). e. NEVER cut, fold, twist, coil, or knot your receiver antenna wire. f. If you wish to run the antenna within the model, consider running it inside a plastic guide tube to minimize the chance of metal contact. In some installations, straight out the wing is a great choice! g. Strain relief is critical! Be sure to secure your receiver antenna with a cutoff clevis arm or other method to protect it in case someone steps on your antenna! 3. Gasoline powered model recommendations: a. All ignition equipment, including an electronic kill switch, must be mounted at least 12", and preferably 14", away from all radio equipment, including throttle servos, radio system power switch, receiver antenna, etc. b. Ignition kill switch should always be on opposite side of fuselage from your radio/receiver's on/off switch. c. All pushrods going to anything related to the engine must be non-conductive (just non-metal clevises is not sufficient. Use a nylon, plastic, or similar pushrod to the throttle servo, kill switches, etc).Transmitter antenna: Leave the transmitter's antenna retracted, and be sure both batteries are fully charged. (For the 9Z family of radios, you must pull the antenna fully out, then collapse the upper sections into the bottom segment. If the bottom segment is not locked in place, you will not have any range at all, as the case shields the antenna from having sufficient output.) 4. Position the aircraft away from wires, other transmitters, radio towers, etc. Test 1 - engine/motor off, minimum of 100 ft. range •Have a friend view the model but not hold it, engine off. •With your antenna completely collapsed, walk away from the model, holding the radio as if you were flying, and working all controls constantly. Stop when the servos jitter significantly (a jitter here and there is normal), control movement stops (PCM), or you lose control altogether. •Measure the distance. If greater than 100 feet, proceed to Test 2. Less than 100 feet of range check means you need more information to determine if your system is safe to fly. 1.Are both batteries fully charged? Peak batteries, check voltage, and repeat test to be sure. 2.What does your specific radio call for in its manual? Different models' manuals will provide you the accurate range for its particular performance. 3.Is the radio a 9Z, 12Z or 14MZ? If so, do you have antenna collapsed with only the base section of the antenna exposed? If not, you will not get an accurate range reading. 4.Are you using a genuine Futaba receiver? Small, park flyer receivers and some other non-Futaba receivers demonstrate different ranges of performance than Futaba's standard receivers. Please consult your receiver's documentation. 5.If you have previously range checked and flown this system in a similar location, similar weather, similar installation, etc, is the range you are now seeing less than 90% of what you have previously seen? If so, DO NOT FLY unless you are aware of specific differences in this set of circumstances that explain the change. 6.Ask a fellow modeler with a similar system to duplicate your range check to see if his range is similar to yours. 7.Repeat the range check with a different transmitter/same receiver and different receiver/same transmitter to try to isolate if either is not performing properly. •Repeat the test with your friend holding the model exactly as he will in test 2. If range testing a Heli, it is suggested that you either "stake down" the heli or use two long flat boards over the skids and weigh them down. Note that a person holding your model can provide a "grounding" affect and may increase or decrease the range demonstrated. Test 2 - engine/motor on •Repeat the test with the model's engine running. If a decrease of more than 10% is noted from test one, research and resolve the cause of interference prior to flying your model. ◦Check for significant vibration in the model, particularly loose engine or engine mount bolts. ◦If gasoline-powered, double-check all items listed above. Consider having the ignition, if any, tested. ◦Check that the receiver crystal is securely seated in the receiver. ◦Be sure the receiver antenna has a proper strain relief and is not being pulled out of the receiver when the engine is running. ◦If you are unable to find the cause of the problem, DO NOT FLY.
